    Di Gi Charat is one of my favorite bizarre anime franchises, and you touch on so many of the things I couldn't find anything about back when the books were originally published in the US. I'm suddenly reinvigorated to use my adult money and Internet access to find the items I was never able to, like DGC Fantasy. Very fun video, definitely gonna check out your other videos!

    I've seen your two NGE/Anno vids months ago, but I was re-watching one of them tonight. I then noticed this video. So it's pretty funny catching this, pretty recently.
    I saw most of the traditional cel series (main, summer/Xmas, etc) many years ago and had lots of fun with them. It's hard to describe why. It manages to balance the wackiness without it feeling too annoying or exhausting.
    Also, it's nice seeing the GBA music playing in the BG. I was listening to the OST while riding my electric bike around my local rural forest/farm area. Specifically sight-seeing in different neighborhoods. God I love the OST. Especially the main track that plays during store section.

    As one of those huge fans of Di Gi Charat (And a enjoyer of Garfield so whatever i guess) This is a great video on Di Gi Charat as a series i have been waiting on a video like this even had thoughts of making one myself, There was some points i would have wished to be talked about more like how Di Gi Charat Fantasy was actually the first attempt to break out the series to be multimedia and maybe a bit on more of the cameos like Dejiko appearing in the fucking Power Stone anime of all things but all around this video is great and i hope to see more like it!
    (Also mixed on the whole Dejiko is Japanese Garfield thing lol)
    9.5/10

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure if fantasy had any significance there or not I didn't see any sources on it so I wouldn't speculate
      Finding the cameos is a bit messy because most aren't labeled so I had to Brute force it through each serues, I think dejiko as Garfield is a good comparison in terms of franchising and maybe seo but I don't take it particularly seriously

    • @thebulbmin-CD
      @thebulbmin-CD Год назад

      @@Stevem Why i'm mixed with it is that i would say even Doraemon would be much closer to a “Japanese Garfield” at that she may be an icon but she is more of a mascot character with a multimedia franchise unlike how Garfield is, Garfield was made to make millions but we all know him as just a comic strip character most of the time even her first appearance in a 4koma i would say her anime series took it into high gear even Broccoli Books said but i agree with the marketing point but it can be said for Mario and Mickey Mouse Also with opposites may go there is a mascot character for another japanese store which is the complete opposite of Dejiko being a badass shonen protag with a cast of characters and even had a crossover with Dejiko in the second Di Gi Charat Drama CD due to them actually being owned by the same guys

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад +1

      @@thebulbmin-CD the problem with the assertion Garfield is known as a comic strip character is I don't think that's true for how most younger people know the character, my nephew who is 8 knows who Garfield is but has no idea of the comic when I was younger I never read the Garfield strips, I knew him exclusively from the Garfield and friends show and merch.
      And doremon has the popularity but it is not an advertisement tool first(it was also created before media mix became the central idea in japanese franchising), either way it's more so a silly title because di gi charat has so little pull on RUclips

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад +1

    I grew up with anime from wonky subbed bootleg DVDs. But Digi Charat felt very unique and introduced to peek moe style appeal that I grew to love! I’m sure I got the original set of episodes and it’s summer suffering sequel. Able to see the movie on another bootleg DVD, and the concert (both anime and IRL) are on these discs.
    It’s a fun surreal experience that I think is why today I enjoy the finer, smaller bits of moe pop culture, especially VTubers...
    Digi Charat did go through other places: One as a mecha vehicle on the final episode of Pastel Memories, and a huge in-game cameo with the OG songs on D4DJ, on all servers likely.
    Didn’t know Digiko shifted over time but I’m glad the anniversary gave her love... Even though now the anime episodes are cleaned off. I guess they want to make this idol princess cat maid special?
    Would be funny if I repeat the cycle and find a bootleg DVD set of the new anime for nostalgia, and the fact it’s non-accessible now and never (EN) subbed.

Otaku content is always elusive even though there’s a lot to learn from this subculture. Looking at it now it really does seem like something an AI creates way before AI. Everything is textbook. Like big eyes relative to faces. All the “Moe” traits is basically all the features said in the biology makes us want to take care of our children. Do they used green because human eyes see green better than any other spectrum? What if an actual AI designed a character? At what point a design is too much? Or Dejiko is truly “the peak”…
