- In this video I am going to show How to Setup an FTP Server on Windows 10.
Building your own FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server can be one of the easiest and most convenient solutions to transfer file through a private or public network without limitations and restrictions typically found with most cloud storage services.
Having a FTP server on internal or external network is always easy and faster to share and access files over the network. Windows 10 , 8 and 8.1 come with built-in FTP server feature under Internet Information Service features which needs to be installed before use.

Restart PC after setting up if you can't access after setting FTP up. Thank you for the excellent instructions. I couldn't access FTP server until I restarted the PC I set it up on.
Excellent... excellent instruction. This was very helpful to me. At work the guys on the shop floor have a monitoring program on their fork-lift trucks that will monitor the movement of all the fork-left vehicles at any given time. The software will generate log files and those log files must be FTPed to a folder for analyzing purposes. I followed your instructions on my home personal computer for practice and it work absolutely great the very first time. Now I have to do this on my Windows Server at work. Thank you for the great instruction on this!
Perfect instructions. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!
I am a Japanese. Your explain was very helpful for me.
Thank you🥰
Excellent instructions. Clear and systematic.
This video was extremely well explained and ilustrated. May the gods of TCP watch over you kind sir!
Video is good, but do not turn off the Firewall. Instead of this go to Advanced settings of the Firewall -> Inbound rules -> New Rule. And add both TCP and UDP rules for your port (21 in my case).
Great exaplanation! And Great job! It help me as a newbie figure FTP out. Thanks
Well done this is the first video that made me feel confident enough to try it on my own, Excellent

Great video. It was a little finicky but I got it to work (after a PC restart). Remember to turn your Windows firewall back on once you get the FTP server to work!
finely i got this working again. apreciate it. thanks.
I tried this and it worked. Thanks!!!
Thanks bro for your precious time & Effort
Great video! thanks
It worked! But if you will use this ftp server to connect from another device (ex. cell phone) you will need to add svchoct.exe to Windwos' firewall expection and allow public and private connections in order to work. (C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe)
Thank you so much for this, after reading about 10 articles on how to do this, none of them mentioned this and remote access finally worked for me.

I have been watching videos for 2 days trying to get my FTP accessible from outside networks. i am still not there yet but this video helped the most. I now at the very least have the sign-in screen from my remote (outside) network where it wasn't there before. i can sign-in inside the network easily but not outside of it, yet. I gave you a like and sub because of all the videos I saw this one was the closest at getting what I actually needed thanks.
Thanks Sir

IT friends:
I am building an FTP server to be accessed outside the network for someone. I did a test build at my home on my router and got it working where I can access inside/outside the network without any hitches. Pretty straightforward process.
However, on the actual FTP server build, I can only access it inside the network and cannot via outside the network.
Copying my firewall rules over to this server which is just a windows 10 pro machine, nothing special. It's not a true server but configured as if it was one. Just a simple FTP setup using ISS.
I can log-on outside the network only through CMD, I cannot through, Explorer or a web browser. I couldn’t find much on how/what could be the issue if one can access the FTP outside the network through CMD but can’t view explorer/web browser. I need to be able to map this network location on the local client machines which is easy but I cannot gain the access correctly due to this unknown issue.
It could be a router issue but I do not believe so as I do have port forwarding setup on it with a static address of the server machine and ports 20, 21, 800 open I did port testing on the ports and those are showing green.
I feel like it is something inside windows firewall. However, It is an Xfinity LAN and they use those shitty all-in-one gateway home routers where NAT is controlled by the ISP and port forwarding is very very basic. It doesn’t allow the typical router interface and access UI one would expect to see inside a router config Interface with NAT/DMZ/App Forwarding/Port Forwarding.
My question is, what could it be at this point? The only thing I can do that I know would work is replacing the router but if Windows Firewall is the issue, changing routers would just be a big waste of time as that process usually requires me to be on the phone with the ISP to do a router switchout. That takes more time than I am willing to spend on this currently as I have already spent way too much time on this side project.
Just to recap. I can sign into the FTP remotely through CMD only, with the credentials. It's signing into it using Windows Explorer/IE that is causing my issue. This is the error message when I try to sign in.
Error message windows provides
An error occurred opening that folder on the ftp server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder
200 type set to a. (IP address of FTP)
Any suggestions???
2:50 for Windows 11 just search for "Windows tools" in your search bar. It is no longer called administrator tools
Great video for Windows 10. Although many things are similar, I cannot get it to work in Windows 11.
working in windows 11
Need to make sure you install IIS management console. You said you don't really need it but you do.
This will be very useful, but does it require windows 10 pro?
Thanks :)
Love it
Absolutely no brainer tutorial
Worked Perfectly and super easy.
Yeah man, honestly - just thanks.
