Magnificent early season game between 2 deserving opponents. A slug fest. Wow. UT forced the 'Cuse to settle for too many field goals. Syracuse went on to bury UM the following week, and UT went on to win a Natty. Good times.
One of the more underrated great games in Vol history. The 2nd half of this game was crazy. And Tee's run was legendary. This Syracuse team was stacked on offense.
That defense in 98 was stout! I sure enjoyed that 98 season this for 1st game of year and few weeks later beating gators and watching goal posts come down to stourner fumble and bcs title great job by entire team
I was at this game as a Cuse fan, I remember how many Vols fans in attendance. Everyone I talked to was cool. I also remember seeing at least 10 people wearing “ spurrier swallows” t shirts. One of the funnest things was watching the Vols fans coming out the carrier dome entries and the air pressure which kept it up, was blowing them out the doors. They were all like “ wtf is that?!!”, then laughing about it. Great game that day
A horrific pass interference call on last drive gave the game to Tennessee. IF Syracuse won and followed up with their blowout at Michigan, a good chance Syracuse has a much different season. That call was criminal. It was 900 degrees in the Carrier Dome that day. Somehow the 4th down "pass interference" wasnt shown here...awful
Joel Anthony It was definitely pass interference upon second glance. First glance, I was about to agree with the Cuse fans, but it’s just very blatant on second viewing. He clearly hits Cedric Wilson before the ball gets there. And the refs would never call that PI if there was any doubt. In the context of this season, this was probably the second toughest game of the 13-0 campaign. Tennessee rolled through the SEC slate except for Florida, Auburn and Arkansas. Auburn was never in doubt for me, though, and the Vols absolutely dominated Florida in that game. Should’ve blown them out, honestly. Florida had like -6 yards rushing and 6 turnovers. The only reason they were in the game was a fluke TD pass to Travis McGriff where the Tennessee safety pulled his hamstring.
@Joel Anthony Uncatchable pass? Late flag for sure. Those combined to make it very questionable. Where Syracuse really got screwed was getting hit for multiple “equipment violation” penalties due to length of knee pads...or something. I’ve legit never heard that called any other time in my life, and it happened at least twice in this game. Ridiculous.
This was a very high-level college football game. That UT team was obviously great, but I think Syracuse underachieved that season, given the talent on the roster. It's amazing that without a very questionable pass interference call against Syracuse, UT probably doesn't win the national title that year.

Donovan McNabb was killing it
The first of many lucky breaks for Tennessee that season.
you meant to spell that "skilled actions"

I still get nervous watching that game. Go Vols!!
It was the start of a magical run!

Check out 9:17 into the video, that was the play that SU got screwed on. It was a SEC crew calling the game.
There was a celebration penalty on the ensuing kickoff too lol

@@justamaninTN They waited well after the play to throw the flag, that's what makes it questionable.
