Rhythm Roulette: DJ Khalil | Mass Appeal

- For the latest episode of Rhythm Roulette, we met up with DJ Khalil. Khalil is behind some major tracks for superstars like 50 Cent ("I'll Still Kill") and Eminem ("Survival"), plus he has a long list of Billboard Hot 100-charting singles. His full discography stretches back almost two decades through his deep roots in the LA hip hop underground, and he's spent lots of time at to the console alongside Dr. Dre. And he's still putting out heat. Recently, Khalil produced the A$AP Ferg banger "East Coast," he has multiple credits on Joey Bada$$' 'All Amerikkkan Badass' (one of 2017's best albums so far), he did two tracks on Anderson.Paak's breakout 'Malibu.'
With that proven track record, we had to see what Khalil could do with the Rhythm Roulette challenge. At Artform Studios in Los Angeles, he picked out some darkside flower power with a Doors album, a Congregation record from the early '70s and a soul selection from Charles Wright to balance it all out. Because Khalil frequently works with rock samples, it seems like dude got the perfect ingredients.

when he passed on that piano that played first, i was like damn this dude is really stupid for not even playing with the sample.....ive watched the entire video and now i can confirm that i am indeed the stupid one.
Don Annix Boom Bap Beats bro, he's ONE OF THE BEST PRODUCERS OF ALL TIME. He had thousands of hits. You never heard of him lol??
But anyway, that piano sample has me searching for it now lol. That was amazing. But I felt he thought that one was TOO easy lol. Because that sample pretty much carries itself. So when he passed on it, I knew why. And then that made me want to see what he does with something less, because to pass on that, I knew he'd make something dope with a different sample, because you're supposed to show you're creativity on this series. And him being him...he never makes a bad beat. He again, surely didn't disappoint, and he surely delivered here.
Don Annix that comment is stupid. That's why you're you and he's him. We shouldn't all flip or hear the same thing in a record.

I've never gone from that disappointed to that impressed as dramatically as I just did watching this. First, I was pissed that he skipped quite possibly the best sample I've heard someone drop the needle on as the very first choice, then I really wasn't understanding why he picked the sample he did pick, and I was even more upset at how it was sounding at firstt, but godamn did that come together at the end. This man got vision. This is second only to Just Blaze's Rhythm Roulette, IMO. Now I just need Khalil to do tutorials on how he designs his synths. Sheesh.
