- For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, we linked with Gensu Dean.
Known by many as The Grand Incredible, Gensu Dean is currently one of hip hop's best kept secrets. Mello Music Group's very own stopped by LES' Good Records to be blindfolded, to select three records at random, and to give us an intimate look into his creative process by cranking out a few beats.
Currently based in Texas, Dean has become known for his vintage SP1200 as well as his massive 7000+ piece vinyl collection to go along with it. In this episode we see the producer taking us through his process, even having to work though a bit of country music.

This dude wasn't bullshittin, no daw, no plug ins or drumkits, just an mp a turntable and a few records and got to business. Literally made something dope from nothing.
Downn Syndrome the way it should be. On the 3000, no less.
This is the minimal raw shit for sure.
pretty much how we were taught
Right!
TRUTH!
Hey this guy didn't just walk over to the Soul and Jazz section of the store, then blind fold himself, pluck a record and act like it's "random". This guy went through store and was vulnerable to any genre. OLD SKOOL attitude, up for the challenge but he didn't rig himself to look good. Absolute props to this guy, MPC for life, YYYEAAAAAHHHHHHH BBBBBOOOOIIII!!!!!!!!!!
yeah, walking over to or close to the soul and jazz sections before the blindfold have forever been the loophole thats been exploited/used time and time again. yeah they didn't know what record they were gonna get in terms of the album or artist itself, but they knew which genre those records belonged to because soul and jazz in general are safe to sample for hip hop beatmakers/producers. they aren't up for stepping outside of that and ending up with shit like, i don't know, the residents or the stooges or mercyful fate or ryuichi sakamoto scores. just anything truly random and challenge themselves to sample from records outside of jazz/soul.
Facts but let’s be honest 9th wonders was still fire
But does it really matter if they choose a genre they feel comfortable with? Random is random no matter the genre. Air quoting as if choosing without looking in a preferred genre, is not random. Some would say going to soundtracks /scores is cheating. Some would say other genres. Whatever they want to pull from man.
OH MAN! If you thought that was crazy check out his album with 7eventhirty all the beats were from an sp1200
Absolutely immaculate! Love how he didn't complain about any of the records before he listened to em.. ANYTHING could have some flippable ish! He even made the point of saying "I'm not gonna call it whack, just wasn't for me" ..what a dude!
Shout to Gensu Dean and Mass Appeal. Always Dope
Mello Music Group shout to mellow music from new zealand yo
Hohepa Hape ayy reporting from Auckland!
Ayyyye cant wait for Oddisee's album
The best in the biz, Mellow Music!
Does anyone know the song in the intro!? I've been dying to know for a while
First off it seems to me that he's in the minority of producers that actually randomly walk through the store blindfolded instead of standing in front of a particular genre and THEN putting on the blindfold. Then he got in there and went to work like he had an hour block of studio time. Didn't appear to use pre-loaded samples, everything seemed to come from the selected vinyl. On top of that, he opted out of the easy route by using a simple sound from the funk album as opposed to using it as a foundation for either track. Love his creative process. This is the type of work that I can really appreciate. Not to talk down on other artists' methods of production, but this minimalist approach is still dope to me. No computer, just an MPC, amp, monitors, vinyl, and turntable. #Respect bro.
You know a OG is at work when he first putting his own drum set together.
DITC!. Nuff said 😌👏👏👏👏
Rip Big L
impossible I guess he was talking about Big L because he was part of DITC. 😎🤙
or when he started sniffing the records. lol
Plug & play, that's what it is!! The 3000 & a turntable, Low Budget style!! That's what created the boom bap we continue to push & make live on!! Nice work Gensu Dean!!
A 3000, turntable and vinyl aint exactly "low budget" lol --them mugs taxed! but I do agree w/ the point you're making haha.
LOL...Low budget an mpc3K is atleast 2K...
@@Lolife86 Yeah now lol it’s old as dirt
I always get amazed when I see people use an MPC the way he does. He got the technique down to a tee.
There's so may ways to approach making beats, but in my opinion this is the purest form done correctly! The second beat was hitting the hardest for me - dope!
OK Mass Appeal, this one instantly goes down as one of my favs!!! Straight old school, LOVED IT!!!
One of the best RRs I've seen. This guy does it right with the right attitude. Beats from scratch. Sees the gold where others may have thought it "whack." Masterful.
His energy was awesome. He must live a blessed life
Perfect motivation for a snow day in NYC
I'd love to see BATTLECAT doing one of those !!
I was just saying to myself a couple of hours ago that we haven't had a new RR in a minute and then..... NOTIFICATION GANG!
Easton Martin I said that this morning while I was brushing my teeth lol
SAME AHAHAHAH
Legend. Big L R.I.P had tracks by him so you know this going to be 🔥🔥🔥d.i.t.c I see you, salute!!!!
So blessed to find a Rhythm Roulette with NO CUSSING! I can show this video to my elementary school students! Bless this gentleman and thanks for this series!!!
That's how it's done, much respect. Enjoyed watching him work.
Epitome of what rhythm roulette should be. A sampler and some records. Fire track.
This was DOPE. More of these Vinyl and Hardware Prorducers. This is real Hip Hop!
It's always cool seeing folks chop on the old mpc's.
working a desk job these videos have saved my soul.
Big Fan of Gensu and to see him get it in was amazing and inspiring.
I love how he says his name, "I'm the Grand Incredible Gensu Dean."
you already know what school he represents by his style of cooking alone. Respect
Back to the essence. Bout damn time..Thank you.
Mello Music Group is killing it. L'Orange, Lando Chill, Mr Lif, Quelle Chris
yeah such a great label, but you forgot the biggest name: Apollo Brown :P
Apollo's super sick too, great roster
one of the best rhythm roulettes to date very good
More Roulettes like this please!
two of the greatest beats of the rhythmroulette series!!!
I always watch this episode at least once a month. This brother killed it
sampling and beat making has always fascinated md, taking something from a handful of records and making something completely new is just so amazing to witness. I've always secretly wanted to try and get into it but I wouldn't even know where to start haha.
Anthony Geonetta with a random record. You can make fire out of anything, trust me on that. If you've got soul in you, you can do this.
Anthony Geonetta a good start is these videos lol look at some of the techniques of sampling and what people make out of the simplest sounds
Anthony Geonetta watch most of these as commented..if you have music ability or played a instrument then already got good start..remember samples from recorded artists
is set in the traditional structure in a sense made in musical notation and melody..so you can be basic and just loop the sample or break it down and rebuild..just practice
Q-Tip on Rhythm Roulette . Make it happen
you got to love the producer that goes anywhere in the store versus straight to soul/funk
salute
Another dope rhythm roulette, *Thank you Mass Appeal!*
Going through Gensu's discography for the next 7 seasons of my life
everytime i see an old school producer on the mpc I just feel like they're my spirit uncle
diggin in the crates
That's how it's done. The first beat already was better than 90% of what i usually see on these kind of videos.2nd beat shows you this man has great sense for interlocking rhythm and hooks.Great stuff.
this guy is beast! didn't even know him 😱 he in my top 5 for sure
I've watched maybe 20 of these Rhythym Roulettes, maybe more, and I've been waiting for someone to SMELLLL the vinyls. I always smell the vinyls, that's how you can tell what era they are from!!!!! There is magic in that smell!
instantly liked. real producers, this what y'all should be showing all the time
Stik Figa & Chuuwee turned the second beat into a track called "Child's Play"
soundcloud.com/mellomusicgroup/stik-figa-childs-play-feat-chuuwee-prod-gensu-dean
Definitely dope when they crank out more than one beat.

UnisfeaRproductions it's the same thing ? Smh
retropickups2000 I'm guessing you meant to ask me " isn't it the same thing?" .. so my answer is yes. it is the same thing but it's borrrriinnggggg as hell
retropickups2000 It's actually better watching a producer just using his machine and turntable then watching someone just click the damn mouse.
It's not the tools you use it's what you build
ooooooooohf Gensu.... now this is a rhythm roulette episode!!!!
dean is a talented dude. big ups 2 mass appeal 4 shining the spotlight on mello music artists, public better not sleep on this roster!!!
lol here comes all the wannabe backpackers applauding a guy not using a computer like that is even a valid factor to criticize. 9.5 of 10 of yall dont even make music yaself.
Bet yall dont even support OGs like this when they put out music.
Finally some real sh!t
Holy fuck, he went in. No excuses, no bullshit, Gensu dropped the heat

That 3000 looks as good as new. Dope roulette!
big ups Gensu. glad to see some grown folk music on here again!
1:12
The look on his face... is priceless. Lol. He soldiered through it though.
It's a pleasure to watch him work!
This is one of my favorites that first beat came together real fast with just a turntable and MPC.
Can't vibe with Country music but I can DEFINITELY make some bangers with it.
Nashid77 word
Nashid77 Peace G. I think he was possibly being humble to obviousness of what we heard.
Ah, Good Records!!! Give a shout to my man, Jonny, the proprietor of the establishment. The record store lives up to its name, good records indeed! Dope beat, Gensu did his thing!!!

one of the few RR that had me freestlying in my head! that was dope. true hiphop inspiration.
Fyah those drums were hitting hard. Gensu Dean that's what's up.
This episode is slept on.
That record at 3:48 it never fails to amaze me how they go into a record store blind folded and pull out some noticeable shit like that
this dude is probably the realist dude so far (salute)
the best Rhythm Roulette I've seen. fantastic work. The second track is fire.
OMG that second beat tho!!!
Dam you can work that machine! Nice flow!
For the old heads
Peace to the God. This is a jeweler showing how the craft is done with minimal tools!
