I spoke to a surfer who was like 60 years old and I asked him what it was like surfing in the 70s and saying that “it must have been so cool”. He said when I’m 60, one day while surfing I’ll have a young fella asking what it was like surfing in the 2020s and that “it must have been so cool”. He said today’s much better because things like wetsuits, swell charts, ear plugs, and the community is so much better. In the 70s localism stopped a lot of people even trying to surf, and women weren’t allowed to surf in some places or at all. This is only a single context in the progression of time. But it makes me think young people will look into the 2020s with nostalgia. Just as much people from the 70s may looked upon the 50s. That’s when I’m kinda like “screw it let’s just have some fun with the time we are given”. Great video I do agree that if you are not involved with the modern era you’ll never be okay with it.
The longer time goes on, the more I internalise the importance of the lyrics to Iron Maidens "Wasted Years" "Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years...Realize you're living in the golden years" We get too lost in nostalgia of the past to even notice that you're in the middle of the days that you'll look back on fondly. It hits hardest when your parents go. All those days when they were around and nothing of particular importance happened, because everything was OK. It those days you long for the most during the hard times. So if today is 'just another day' for you, take a moment to appreciate it because these are the golden years.
I really like making music and if I were to live in a different time period I feel like I'd be missing out on all the cool and amazing instruments and effects we have nowadays. Plus it would be so much more expensive and difficult to record everything. I'm pretty happy with nowadays, you just gotta focus on your interests and what you like to do instead of all the crap going on.
Im just depressed as long as i can think but i would really appreciate life, in fact i do. Trying to heal and live fully. world is full of interesting stuff and lovely people
That's why I am a big fan of synthwave/outrun genre - the music sounds like 80s, but it's actually a 00s+ style. It provides a profound feeling of nostalgia towards a future that has never existed. And it's mostly positive.
The stuff from the past that you see pictures of was just the stuff that was judged as being worth taking a picture of. Just out of frame, some awful rubbish was almost certainly taking place. It's just as curated as someone's instagram feed today. P.S. I miss those bumbling 2 hour conversations too.
I like listening to your thoughts. I think there's a universal tendency to believe that whatever thing we liked as teenagers peaked when we were teenagers. Jason Scott once called it "chronological narcissm" - or "I'm so awesome that it's all downhill from me" - but I wonder if that's a little uncharitable. It was when we were that age that we were finding our place in the world, and of course it feels like a threat to our identities when those things change. I'm as prone to this as anyone. But I find a little comfort in asking "how is this change I don't like similar to changes from the past, which we survived just fine"? There's little new under the sun. Before the smartphone it wasn't like everyone was being sociable on the bus, because there were newspapers - and before loudcasting on the bus there were _boom boxes_, folks. Going up a meta-level, even that sense that things have changed and it's bad and we need to go back isn't new - you can find that in the Bible and with the ancient Greeks, so even that feeling isn't particularly special or unique to any particular generation alive today. Anyway, this age isn't so bad at all. Some things were better back in . Some things weren't really better but I like them anyway. But it's easier than it has ever been to enjoy the artifacts of the past. I can listen to the music from back then for free. I can watch videos of things back then for free for a nostalgia fix. I can get all the vintage stuff I could possibly want from eBay. My cars are 21, 38, and 61 years old because that is what I like - and it's easier to get parts for them than it has ever been to get parts for 21, 38 and 61 year old cars. And in the end, this age is the one I got, so I might as well make the most of it and not complain _too_ much. Cheers :)
I want to stop being on this app so much but you are seriously one of the greatest finds. I’ve watched so many of your videos the past couple of months. Can’t thank you enough for doing what you do.
Hello, fellow RUclips addict here, just found this guy this morning. He's good eh, I think we do need to go outside more though eh. Dare you to go for a walk and let me know how it goes
This post reminds me of that song by The Jam, The Modern World 🌎. And to younger people who are watching this video it wasn’t all peachy rainbows and unicorns in the 70s. There was a lot of shite going on then too. 🧘♀️
Jonny, have you read Jean Baudrillard- Simulacra and Simulation. About how everything is a representation of the past - everything is a simulation. Everything is either a sign or symbol. When you understand his message it’s frightening.
The thing about nostalgia is that it emphasizes the good parts and conveniently forgets the bad parts. Hearing "The Dark Side of the Moon" of the moon back then was pretty much a subculture thing, not mainstream and when you look at actual charts from the time and hear into the top 10 songs you get a fresh appreciation of Taylor Swift ;.-)
Modern technology allows us to explore the past as a treasure trove of interesting things we may never have heard of or were unable to access before. Go exploring.
👍 dude ☝️ we have to make of it what we can 👉 lot of lamenting about this next song... maybe too much lamenting ... this song is not a rebel song 😬 im serious
i'm a millenial but i'm anti-nostalgia too like Big Time anti-nostalgia. History is wonderful and interesting but should be left at that. The reason people think "the present sucks" is because they're all too obsessed with /nostalgia/ to make the present moment feel new & vibrant. so boring to see the same ideas & aesthetics constantly "revived" in increasingly uncreative ways. Sure there was some cool stuff happening in the 90s & early 2000's but was i happy then? Nope. i'm way happier now even if i don't relate much to the culture around me. I'm happy within the present moment Just doing my own thing Not really paying attention to the rest. Romanticize the present & everything that's at your fingertips Now, cus it'll all change again soon.
Born in 84, grew up in the 90s and I think it was way better than growing up now. Every Saturday, my mum would give me a fiver, I could get a cinema ticket, chocolate, and McDonalds after amd have change left over! No social media, just your small circle of friends and you working out what the world is about. Just look today, kids get mental health problems if they have to speak on the phone! There is little hope for kids these days in the UK at least.
The fake nostalgia thing is pretty indictive of the decadence going on really.i it ruins creative mediums too like tape or film photography or 16mm as an example .I shoot film photography, I as prefer the black and white look as a creative medium. However many seem to shoot film because it looks "nostalgic" rather than as a genuine medium And take film images for the sake of it rather than as a hobby. and I have noticed its getting a bit far with a few people with the nostalgia thing such as role playing/imagining themselves in the 70s or somthing which is a distraction ultimately from the real world. Don't get me wrong the past was easier but the nostalgia element is a distraction Feel like 70s uk architecture is rubbish and the cars were made of rust, however music was awesome .but that's just my take!
Idk, that just sounds gatekeep-y for the sake that someone isnt taking it as seriosuly as you, kids appreciating old stuff for the way it looked and how it shows its own vibe is a bad thing? I mean you're watching a guy that is likely using an old cam just for cool aesthetic factors. Sounds like a nothing-burger point
@samuelbanya it was better in 2013. Nostalgia, without that this place is all I got, and its very heartless and apathy. Nk one wants to talk to anyone to make a life. People are gourded and selfish. And there is tons if reason to explain why your better off on your own then with connecting. This, create depression and loneiness m. Its a horrible era. Its evil becouse it's ""kind"" and disconnected.
I think it's pretty awesome and exciting actually guys. Not to be a dick but I hope you find something cool that makes you think, ok maybe shit doesn't suck so bad. By the way I'm a total fuck up so don't think I'm coming from some high and mighty place. All the best guys, oh and I'm a millennial in think I'm 38, 39 in may.
as a Pole, the 70s aren't remembered as a positive period at all, more like a period of communist's oppression, so for us the modern era has pretty much only positive vibes so far with a few exceptions
I get what you mean, but lets be real off the bat: Ke$ha and Katy Perry suck, lol. The only thing that has changed, is that $$$ gets into more things, and thins out any real talent.
@@paulinercopoth Ah yes. Katy Perry. If Alanis Morissette and Demi Moore (and many others) had a baby, lol. Do you like being misled by People of Time and Money?

Man filming in 4:3 rants about not romanticizing the past ☺️ nice vid
It's actually just black bars he puts on the side of the screen, he's actually filming in 16:9
best part is watching it on a 4:3 screen on a rg406v. I have a problem

And then the present turns past and becomes better than the present too
was born in 1995 in Russian Siberia, have a nostalgia for USSR(never even experience it) and for 80s Miami. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I hate nostalgia, I miss the days when I was younger and never had to think about the past.
