Two Tribes was the A-side and a massive hit in England. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one on 10 June 1984, where it stayed for nine consecutive weeks, during which time the group's previous single "Relax" climbed back up the charts to number two

Great, had the pleasure of seeing them live along with Adam Ant and INXS as one show. Sometime in the 80’s in NY. All three band were just incredible. What a show. 👍🏻
Funny story about this version. This CD was one of my “go tos” for long road trips because I like the trance it put me in (perfect for driving). At 3AM I put the CD in while my then wife was sleeping. War followed by this version of Two Tribes caused her to have a nightmare. She woke up crying and screaming. She was convinced we were listening to the news and we had no home to go back to because a nuclear war had just started. Reagan was still president at the time and since his voice is impersonated in this extended mix, it was all just too real to her . Took about 30 minutes to calm her down but I was never allowed to play this CD in the car with her again! 😥
Loved them. Dancing round the room! ages since heard this. And I’m a prog rock fan. Don’t worry about the messages in the song. I’m old now and have lived always under the mushroom cloud with nuclear rods being carried past my door on the trains and saw them on roads from nuclear power stations to nuclear subs. We’ve just got to keep sending the message to our leaders ‘we’re not having it’. They hate that. Love is the answer.
Frankie always was a thought provoking band. Their lyrics can be shocking, but if one takes the time to understand the subject, then they become very plausible. Great reaction, L33. A big Thank You to the person requesting the video.
You're welcome Paul... I requested these songs. Hope you enjoyed the flashback as much as I did. I always appreciated the lyrics behind the catchy dance songs as well. ☮❤🎶
@robotronrichard Oh man, I really did. It's been more than thirty years since I heard them on the radio. Almost forgot that they existed at all. I was in Portugal back then and their songs were deemed as not radio friendly because of the lyrics, so they were banned.
FGTH live was the toughest concert I've ever been to. When the concert started, I was 11 rows away from the stage. At the end of the concert there were only 3 rows. The whole time, people were pulled out in front of the stage so they wouldn't be crushed. I was able to tighten my legs several times without any problems without falling. It was a mixture of fear and ectasy.
It's genuinely a great album. I bought it in 84 and have been listening ever since. Somehow I have not heard the mix that Richard requested and it's a BANGER! Thanks Richard, thanks Lee! I don't know if you picked up on it but the voice in Two Tribes is an impersonator doing Ronald Reagan. Side-story: I grew up in the east of England where there were a good number of US airbases during the cold war. Thus, we were a taget for the USSR missiles. At school, they told us if we heard the siren the best thing to do was get under our desks. Couple this with songs like Two Tribes and my school showing us a docu-drama called "Threads" - about a nuclear attack on the UK -most of us were terrified! If you really want to see something bleak then I recommend Threads :D Full movie on YT: ruclips.net/video/9686KxSiXJY/видео.html
Just when I’m on think you might like Roddy Frame. His band were called Aztec Camera. Scottish. He ended up going solo. Fantastic lyricist. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roddy_Frame
These are both 12" Dance Club Mixes. Very nice, but the core of the songs are strung out and lack unity like the songs themselves. That was also the age of the 12" Dance Mix.
Check out the full version of the track 'Welcome to the pleasure dome', it's an epic trip and we'll worth a listen. Frankie goes to Hollywood we're top draw.
In 'Two Tribes' the advice on disposal of dead bodies and to stay indoors in a nuclear attack is a direct lift from the British Government's publication and broadcast advice "Protect and Survive" (Published 1974-80). The actor voicing it here is the same one (Patrick Allen) who voiced the official version. Oddly enough the only practical advice: "Kiss your a$$ goodbye" did not feature. On a musical note I prefer the original shorter single version to this over extended noodling. If you want another take on "Protect and Survive" seek out the animation of Raymond Briggs' cartoon book "When the Wind Blows" which follows a couple (based on his parents) trying to manage following a nuclear attack, following the instructions to the letter.

Love of comrades fighting for the people, and love of people. Not an abstract people, but people one meets and works with. When Che Guevara taught of love being at the center of revolutionary endeavor, he meant both. For people like Che or George Jackson or Malcolm X, love was the prime mover of their struggle and love cost them their lives. Love coupled with a man's pride. @@bf99ls I heard the original unproduced version of this, and it has that same bass line...so it's defo Frankie's bassist's own work. The studio version sounds like a sequencer version of that same bass line, though.
Your Pink Floyd shirt makes me think you’ll dig the first side of the Frankie album - dark side of the mood - it’s prog pop, which never was a thing apart from 12” remixes
This Reagan-era middle-finger event-album was such a singular experience that it simply would not allow the band to succeed with anything new. Even MTV rejected the subsequent music. The band got pigeon-holed and couldn't break the mold.
Lee, more dance/electronica 🎉🎉? I love me a thumping bass. Try by “Open Up” byLeftfield with John Lydon. Massive bass and welrdly also timely. Also New Order “Blue Monday.” Legendary song. I went to many many muddy raves in muddy fields in the early 90s. Great times 🙃 🍄
Great as always - Thanks :D Check out this live version of Pleasuredome, Two Tribes and Relax (with Howe and Horn) ruclips.net/video/RbwNrG4MTlE/видео.html
In the midst of popular '80s era Reagan bashing I think it's worth mentioning that instead of fostering a nuclear exchange, Reagan's strategy directly contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union within short order of each other. This is an embarrassing note that many musical artists of that time conveniently choose to ignore today in retrospect.
War. What is it good for?
Absolutely NOTHING! Say it again! ☮❤🎶
Absolutely nothing!
They make a lot of money, thats why.
Depopulation
Destroying one's enemies.
Both amazing songs. Holly Johnson has a beautiful voice.

You and your family must take cover at once
Do not stay out of doors

You will here three bangs in short succession, like this
In some areas, the warning may be given
By means of three gongs, like this

All these three types of sounds

Wow, Richard. Thank you.
Good reflections, Lee.

Topical. I haven’t been this scared since 1984 when I first heard this amazing band.
It is very topical indeed… kinda freaky timing on my part. I hope we continue on like last time and everything cools down …

thanks for giving FGTH a real chance… and your personal experience ramblings after the songs are just fine…
