I was 10 when this song came out (which means I'm pushing 50 now). It was the height of the cold war. This song was an absolute monster hit in the UK - 9 weeks at No.1, the longest reigning No.1 of the whole mighty 80s.
This video was too hot to handle at the time, and was banned as it depicts the leaders of the 2 superpowers (lookalikes of President Reagan and Chairman Chernenko of the USSR) duking it out in a sandpit instead of sending their soldiers to fight for them. It's basically about WWIII.
It amazes me that this is not more well-remembered...

There are 6 remixes of this song and were Annihilation, Carnage, We Don't Want To Die, Hibakusha, Cowboys & Indians and For The Victims of Ravishment.
The song is about the Cold War, the 2 fighting in the ring are supposed to be Ronald Reagan USA and Konstantin Chernenko USSR.
It focuses on the futility of MAD Mutually Assured Destruction and the underlying fear we all lived through. Some of the sampled voices are from the UKs Protect and Survive booklet and PSAs for if the Cold War suddenly got Hot.
Voice of actor Patrick Allen "Mine Is The Last Voice You Will Ever Hear " at the end of the Carnage remix is so haunting.
I'm afraid many people born after 1991 don't understand what the Cold War was and the living with the very good chance of Nuclear War and the aftermath.

However, after the second video was made the song was banned completely by the BBC, meaning that neither video was ever broadcast on any BBC music programmes.

I know it's not what was intended, but Britt's take is very relevant to now.. Back then, the clashing ideologies of politicians and their voters (er, in some cases) drove much of the old superpower animosity. Now it is arms dealers and tycoons of the military industrial complex driven by psychopathic lusts. Greed is just one, but it's shared by so many in government that they can simply bribe someone like Biden, or financially reward someone slightly less brazen like Lyndsey Graham in ways that are illegal but practically undetectable. Thus, with a bung of just a few million, 'big arma' can stoke the always simmering fire of legislative warmongering and reap billions in contracts.
As bad as as illegal corruption or legal lobbying and revolving doors between public office and private board membership are, and as much as I think they are the underlying reason why Britt misheard the above lyric as "When 2 tribes go to war, money's all that you can score", there's a group that is even worse than war profiteers, which is the subject of the rest of this post and is a somewhat off-topic tangential gripe!
The media is so spiritually rotten at this point that war propaganda has become like holy scripture to them. Meanwhile, war profiteering is now inherently good since it reassures those twisted old fruits that war is in good shape, a healthy force in the world still, full of beans and the promise of robust continuity. Such confidence is well-founded given the incredible talent of mainstream journalists - not least their ability to turn a blind eye to the collapse of their viewers and readers. MSM today has about as much hope of peddling mass propaganda as a gender-affirming surgery victim does of spreading venereal disease. They're impotent, figuratively speaking, and perhaps literally too if their sour and joyless faces are any indication. Most of them never venture into places where the real public interact, preferring to socialise and isolate in their Beltway bubble or among a dinner set like themselves. If they did go out and try to gauge the wider public's attitudes, they'd start to realise that their sabre-rattling is a major turn-off in a period where people in the English-speaking countries have for two decades been able to witness the plight of so many young men who are missing limbs or organs or have had their nerves irrevocably scrambled by unnecessary wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and so on which were also sold to us with a counterfeit bill of sale. MSM lost a chunk of the audience due to TDS, but they have haemorrhaged even more viewers in the last four years over disingenuous reporting on Russia and the war in Ukraine and America's own inexcusable part in it all, while the penchant of left-wing people to support the Palestinian cause and scorn the Israelis', which they have responded to with more impotence, has also affected their ratings.
Is it any wonder that the constant and unpleasant beating of plastic war drums by MSM has prompted progressives and moderate Democrats alike to turn a deaf ear on their former go-to news outlets?
    They won't be back.

In other words if two nuclear armed countries start, the only result possible is everyone loses.
This was late '80's, the two "combatants" here are Reagan & Yeltsin. There was genuine fear that the world was on the brink of nuclear war. You're correct about the money (represented here in people betting on the fight) because wars have nearly always been fought for profit. Some may have started over different ideological views (WW2 was started over the West rejecting fascism) but many of the world's "developed" nations economies now depend on the war machine to keep the cash flowing.
