      I definitely agree with you! Gosh even a dress with some simple ruffles are hard!! 😠😡 sewing is so hard and trying to do it with a sewing machine is even harder. I leaned how to hand sew. So a sewing machine is super hard. Man I just want beautiful doll clothes and I keep ending up with disasters.

    Deconstructing a factory made outfit is the single most useful tip anyone has ever made on the topic of doll clothes. Your prosess somehow unlocked "how doll clothes works" for me. I found it so difficult to figure out how I could make what I wanted before. It is much easier now that I keep your videos in mind. Thanks for getting me started on sewing, gluing and customizing!

    As someone who's entire experience with sewing is all the mending they do, I wanted to let you know that this is a very easy to fallow tutorial. I live in rural town nowhere, so it's hard for me to find classes and such, and trying to teach myself how patterns work has been hard. This on the other hand, was very clear, and the editing makes it easy to fallow what pieces come from what, and how not to loose track.

    Something to note: When doing a glued hem, the teeny tiny clothes pins you find in the scrap booking area at the craft store REALLY help to keep it in place while the glue dries without having to use pins, which could deform the fabric while it's drying.

    I just used this tutorial to take apart the dress of the Clawdeen Wolf I'm doing my first custom on, and used the created pattern to make an adorable sweater dress!
    Making the pattern was long and tedious, but using the pattern to make the dress was ridiculously easy, even for someone who was hand sewing.
    Thank you so much for this tutorial, I never would have thought of that and I love your videos!

    This was so helpful! Especially the pattern copying bit. AND THE CAT IS SO CUUUUUUUTE!! Something else I learned while sewing monster high underpants, if you put the fabric you’re sewing over a piece of paper (newspaper, printer paper, any kind I guess!), and just sew through the paper and everything, it stabilizes it really well and completely stops your doll clothes from being eaten by the sewing machine!! Then you can slightly wet the paper, and it just comes off perfectly! It completely saved my doll underpinnings! Haha.
    Edit: needed to emphasize the cuteness of the cat.

    actually a cat can really help by choosing the best felt,cloth, or material by 1- separating all fabric by the texture or where it came from. 2- put the out into piles. 3- make sure to put the material on the floor in piles. 4- wait a few days for your cat or dog to sit or lie down on one of the piles of fabric. And that material will be the coziest/ softest of them all!!

    Another method I use sometimes is just to cut the factory clothes apart right at the stitching. then trace them using chalk onto new fabric. Instead of cutting out all the little pieces and then trying to sew them with an 1/8 in seam allowance (which can be tricky on tiny pieces that can get caught in the machine). The I sew directly over the chalk lines, and finally trim down the pieces. This has saved my sanity for sure!

    I definitely underestimated how difficult it is to sew in such a small scale, especially as someone who's been sewing at full scale for 20 years! Despite sewing for so long, I've never deconstructed a garment to make a pattern from it, so this was a really nice breakdown of how to do that! I've tried making sloper patterns for MH dolls, but they just never came out well for me, so I'll have to go buy some doll clothes to take apart and repurpose (most of my dolls are from lots on ebay xD)
    Your little pattern envelope drawings are so cute, too!

    • @Dollightful
      @Dollightful  7 лет назад

      Hello veteran seamstress! Yes, I have also found the tiny scale is about as hard as normal scale, but for different reasons, haha! Good luck with the deconstruction; I bet you'll do great!

    Great tutorial! And very cute outfits! This is very helpful to me. Can't wait for the next one!
    Something I've found helpful with sewing; when I have to rotate my piece, I put the needle down into it, then lift the foot. That way, there's no risk of shifting it too far, or accidentally pulling thread too far out of the machine.

    honestly id probably rather hand sew it. since that just seems like a pain to try to use a sewing machine. would take longer but would be a looooot easier to not screw up lol

    You can mix a shoe cleaning /caring spray with acrylic to paint on fabric .It makes it softer.But know that you should put just a little more acylic after so it becomes more visible.Yes,this works.And personally,I think this is better than watered down acrylic or normal acrylic.

    Excellent! Thank you. I am so impressed that your sewing machine sews over the pins =) I may try that with my less expensive work horse machine...I was of the generation that you never sewed over pins, but with these small dolls you almost have to, or hand baste, which is what i do. The way you do it is so much faster.

    As someone who sews, I can absolutely confirm that a cat is a necessary seamstress assistant. LOL! Even though I sew and have worked with complicated patterns and fabrics, it still blows my mind to see people sew up doll clothes. So tiny and precise. Hats off to you!

    Even thought Im sewing clothes for a doll I made myself, looking back to this video years after it was released has really helped me!! I looked back at some other doll clothes and really gave them a good examination and found how to sew the outfit I was looking to make! Thank you for this wonderful video, even though it was made quite a long time ago

    what a fantastic video. very helpful! as I go into my first custom, I plan to make sort of a flapper dress, one with lots of fringe and pearls. this video really helped put the process in my mind. I'm super thankful I can sew, but I see now it's going to be tougher than I thought! can't wait for part two.

    • @Dollightful
      @Dollightful  7 лет назад

      A flapper dress sounds like a great dress to start with. I bet you'll do a great job since you can already sew! My best advice is just to take it slow and use the hand crank a lot.

    Thank you so much for this video. I had purchased a pattern and to my dismay, it did not come with any instructions, other than how to lay out the pieces on the fabric. I struggled through to make a muslin, but thought there had to be an easier way to construct it, and you showed me how, so thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
