Hi Rachel
I really enjoyed this video of Robert’s process and detailed explanation of making dolls’ dresses! I wish he would make more of these instructional videos as I would love to learn more 😁 he’s truly inspiring and pretty impressive ❤️
Robert is amazing. I’m so glad you enjoyed this and we do hope to do more with him. He’s a genius!!
More videos please. I want to learn!
Joan Nereni book on dressing dolls is a must in your library
When he said “I have all this knowledge that no one wants to know” ...NOoooooOooo! WE WANT TO KNOW! An in-depth session like this is so good, so inspiring! Please ask him for more lessons like this for *all* of the virtual conventions?
I totally agree! We can't wait to do more videos with the great Robert Tonner!
How about a series on MasterClass? Then no waiting for a convention?
@@mala3isity If he did a series with MasterClass, that would be AMAZING! I would register immediately.
@@RachelHoffmanDolls Since he knows you, you should put a fly in his ear, mention it to him.
YES!! More PLEASE!!
I've learned more about draping and making a pattern for people from watching this video than I've learned watching pattern-making videos for people. Thank you!
That's fantastic to hear! Sometimes, observing skills in one context can offer fresh insights for another. I'm so glad the video provided you with valuable knowledge for pattern-making. Happy crafting! 😊🧵📏
I've followed Robert Tonner dolls for years, but have only owned some of his doll clothes, thus far. I AM NOW CRAZY ABOUT ROBERT TONNER. WHAT A DELIGHTFUL MAN! And, to share his knowledge so freely with we sewers is even more endearing. His kind nature and soft-spoken demeanor has made a forever fan out of me! Thank you to Rachel Hoffman for sharing this video to the RUclips world.
I sent this comment to Robert this morning and he said it was so sweet
I would buy a whole muslin wardrobe from him..so simple and elegant
❤❤❤
Hi( Bobby) Robert! From Indiana, a long time ago! I remember when we would ride the school bus home( a looong bus ride), you were my next door( down the gravel country road) neighbor & you would sketch doll dresses for me all the way home!!! You would make BEAUTIFUL dresses for your sister! I was so in awe of your talent, even then, & I loved those pictures so much! I knew you were so talented & would go far! So proud of your achievements then & now! ❤️
I don't know any of the context of any of this, I'm just an Internet nomad. But this is the single greatest learning tool I have ever found. I like dolls, I have a few different brands and various hobbyist creations. But I want to dress them myself. And here is a doll wizard casually producing a lecture for us proles. Wow! What a time to be alive!
So happy to see this comment! Can’t wait to hear about your creations.
I love watching people make doll patterns because I can use pretty much all the same knowledge scaled up to make my own clothes. It's just something about seeing it done on a smaller scale that makes the techniques click in my mind and help me to understand. Even more so seeing a professional at work!
The same thing happens when you scale down numbers in math.
It's literally "one cannot see the forest for all the trees." it's only once you get that upper/big picture that it all makes sense.
Muchas gracias a usted Rachel y a Robert, por mostrarnos todo el proceso.
Me gusta hacer ropa para mis muñecas y ha sido muy instructivo para mi el conocer este método para poder construir un patrón. ❤
It's amazing to see the person who created Tonner dolls being so humble and helpful at the same time. And he explains so perfectly !
nothing's better than learning from a pro! I sew a lot but I am soooooooooooo bad at making patterns . thank you Robert , thanks Rachel
We are so happy this was helpful!! XOXO
Same goes to me too.. why making pattern so hard.. ?
Thank God for this man!!! I've been looking for a simplified approach to making clothes and doll clothes. Beauty is simplistic and he is a master of it!
I so wish Robert would make a whole series on doll pattern design/making - I'd buy it for sure! Delving into all of this knowledge is amazing. I'd like to see how, once it has a satisfactory fir, how you transfer this to paper with lean lines and then digitalize it. I'd also like to know how to adapt this for the various-sized dolls available. Yes, I'm into doll pattern making, this is the best teaching I have found. I am hoping there will be more to follow - make it a paying teaching course, I'd be a student for sure! Thank you so much for this!
It would be a dream if he would! Hopefully someday!!
I just bought muslin, a doll clothes ironing board, French curve, and the McCall's sewing book. All thanks to Mr. Tonner! Now I just have to find the sewing machine.
What a treat to see and hear the talented Robert Tonner explain making a pattern. So glad to see this video.
We are so glad you enjoyed this, Robert Tonner is a dream!
That was amazing. I never thought much about how they make patterns for doll clothes. I just figured it was much simpler than "HUMAN" clothes. But the detail is so much the same. It seems very complicated. The people you see on YT, etc...that alter clothes, and patterns don't have the knowledge this man has. I think they just learned the HOW to make simple changes, but never learned the WHY. Which is always what I want o know. WHY WHY WHY...I just never stopped asking that. Dolls don't complain, so the market is easier.. LOL. THANK YOU, AND this lovely man for taking time to teach us. He is a real gem. 💎💓
I can’t get over how amazing this was. What I learned for this one video was priceless. I wish you could do a whole series on the process of doll making clothing, from pants to shirts.
Me too
Finally, i got an understanding how to create a sleeve, the dimensions behind it instead to shape.
Glad it was helpful!
The fact that he still uses a seam ripper after almost 60 years of sewing 😮 Thank you Robert Tonner, I feel so less of a failure now. Such a lovely insight Thank you both millions 😊
You’re so welcome. So glad you enjoyed this!
Thank you Robert and Rachel! What a great gift to doll makers!!
You are so welcome, thank you for watching and commenting!
👍🏻
How about making a mannequin for every doll type. Lol I love Tonner Dolls!!
Who wouldn't want to know all of his knowledge on this!! I do!! This is great!
I love this. No wonder my barbie clothes don't always fit right I learned so much
I gasped when he pulled out the sewing book! I just got that one from my aunts house!!!
Awesome! I love this video, thanks for watching!
My grandmother was a dressmaker and I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was little. It explains why I have so many dolls. ^^
Is this video even real? Thank you so much Mr Tonner, it's a privilege to watch you create such elegant lines. It's a dream, can't hardly believe my eyes.
Thank you Rachel, another heavenly video!
What a great teacher! His voice is so calming and pleasant, this whole process seems so approachable, even for an absolute beginner :)
He is the BEST! We’re so glad you enjoyed this.
What an amazing tutorial on making & fitting a doll pattern from scratch! Learned so much. Very inspiring. Thank you so much Ms. Hoffman & Mr. Tonner, for sharing your expertise & this video. PS: No lunch for that model tho (smile)
You are so welcome! I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for subscribing!
Many thanks to Robert Tonner!!!!!
He is the best!
I can't stop collecting!! He is a genius at his craft. The majority of his doll clothes are pieces of art, the style, the combination, and feelings that are brought upon when looking or just handling these tiny pieces
Is remarkable. Thank you Robert
I love this man! So much talent in such a kind soul. Generous with his knowledge and skills. I've been sewing on and off for 50 years. The most important lesson I've learned is that there's always more to learn. Every time I watch Robert, I always learn more. He continues to be my inspiration and reminds me why i love dolls so much. There are so many skills to incorporate with dolls. Clothes, hair, jewelry, props, stories, photography. The Power of Play times ten!!!!! Thank you Robert Tonner for the joy you've given me (and all your fans) all these wonderful years. And OMG for bringing back Ellowyne and introducing Neema!! Whoop!!!! Whoop!!!!!!!
I copied your wonderful Comment and just sent it to Robert Tonner to make sure he read it!! 💓💓💓
Wow where has this video been all my life ❤😮🎉
I've never owned a Robert Tonner doll but I will say ever since I was 5 years old I've had a love for dolls I think what really did it was seeing Child's Play/Chucky. Having a love for the character led me to dive deeper behind the scenes! How much work and designing the clothes making multiple head sculpts made me want to start customizing dolls myself. It's a shame for something so detailed and time-consuming it seems like the doll community is still very small in a way it's kinda cool to be the only person in the friend group that customizes dolls though. Anyway I love this tutorial I honestly want to meet Robert now 😂 he seems pretty cool
Robert is a wonderful person. Thank you for watching and good luck on your projects!!
This is an amazing tutorial for me as I am not good at math (I saw many other tutorials need calculation for making patterns). Mr. Robert Tonner is a talent!
Thank you for your kind words and watching!
Thank you so much for this. He’s a great teacher, which is a rare trait in itself!
We agree!
I really enjoyed watching you make the pattern . It put me in the mind set of my father who was a taylor who taught me and my sistersto see. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed this!
I’m not a doll dress maker but I am a dress maker and I want to make my own patterns. This video is excellent for learning pattern making for life size dolls😉. What a great teacher Mr Tonner is. I will be utilizing what I learned here in my dressmaking. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comment, we’re so glad this was helpful!
Rewatching this year or so after 1st viewing, and sooooo grateful for your generosity and patience, Robert, in taking time to do that masterful, detailed demo!
Sorry for the run-on sentence, though, but THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Oh my Goodness!! Thank you for posting this video! I've been bumbling around trying to make my own patterns for years, and this video helped me more than anything else that I've viewed. Thanks again Robert!
Glad it was helpful!
Same for me.
How generous of Mr. Tonner to share his knowledge! He is a gem!
Isn't Mr. Tonner just the best? His willingness to share his expertise adds so much value to our community. We're all richer for it! Thanks for recognizing his generosity and for being a shining star in our doll world! 😊✨
I'm a self-taught draper! I never knew that this was a real thing. This is fascinating to watch from the hand of Robert Tonner! It's just so surreal.
So glad you enjoyed this! Robert is a treasure!
Fascinating to watch Robert draft a pattern.
Thank you for watching!
The best sewing class ever!!!!
I've been sewing doll clothes for decades now and can draft a simple pattern just by look and measurements, but I do like the draping techniques he's using. For more complex patterns, it's much more accurate and gives greater control. He's also totally right about darts. XD They're more complex than many beginning sewers know, even though they are incredibly useful. When you don't feel like doing a princess seam, a dart is your friend. If you haven't ripped out a seam, or bled on the piece, you're not sewing. XD The number of times I've jabbed myself with a pin or a needle...
Careful BJ!
This is excellent information from a very skilled man!, thank you so much
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching.
Best video demonstration I've ever viewed and I've seen a lot! I was having difficulty measuring for a doll robe getting the extended width for to go over pajamas sleeves when resizing a doll 4 times the size! I am looking forward to viewing more! Thank you!
Industrial machines are great! This is so great to see Robert Tonner work!
Love this Erik & would like to see more.I
Hello, Robert. Too bad you're not releasing dolls now. I had a big collection before. At the moment, I'm collecting antique dolls. But your pupae are 'forever in my heart' like you. I've always liked 'watching videos of you. I think you're a very kind and talented man. Thank you! I am from Russia. You have a huge crowd of fans in this country.
Robert is releasing dolls. He is working on several projects right now, and we have an exciting release coming with the Virtual Doll Convention "Grace" doll. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I learned so much from Robert. I have been trying to sew dolls and their clothes. I always struggle and basically gets lost and confused to what I am trying to achieve. Robert made it looked so easy and the way he explained was easy to comprehend. I will defintely be using his technique. What a great artist! Thank you Rachel for this video. I hope there will be more like this from you and Robert Tonner. Thank you.

Oh my that book was released the year I was born 😹😹😹😹 but thanks this was interesting to watch it’s just shrinking down what I learned as a dressmaker from people size to doll size🙀😹
Feb. 2024... Thank you sew much for posting this video! I'm grateful & I've learned so much! I'm wanting to sew cloth dolls (with hair) & make dresses for the dolls out of my wedding dress material. I accidently stumbled on this video & find it amazingly helpful!! 🎉❤
The dolls will be for my 4 grand daughters.
You could apply these techniques for making a pattern for anything. One of the most informative videos I have ever seen. Thank you so much. So inspiring. :)
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your kind words!
Wow - hard enough to do for a real person - but on this scale - absolutely incredible skill!!!!
What a great video, I would pay good money for this type of tutorial as there are very few out there for drafting the patterns for dolls, so finding it here on RUclips is an absolute treat. Thankyou

@@RachelHoffmanDolls He is. In love with his way to convey the knowledge he has! Thank you for making this video happen...
Started learning how to do stuff like this since we got a 3D printer back in 2020 for face masks and I started using it to print dolls. Been making dolls of my characters and other people's characters. This was super helpful and I look forward to watching more stuff like this!
Robert and Rachel, Thank You sooooo much! This was fabulous! Thank you for sharing some of your wonderful knowledge with the Doll community! I can't wait to try this. Love it! Please can we have some more?!
I really learned a lot from this. Thank you to you for filming and to Robert for teaching me 😁

I'm so glad this came across my timeline, a year later, but still! What a treat! I want to make some special clothes for my dolls and this was extremely helpful!
This is my favorite video with Robert outside of the one where we see his doll collection. Glad you enjoyed this!
I would love to have a tools list, the doll ironing tool, and such. This was a wonderful video; in school, we never did this small of a scale however we did do doll size (American Girl Doll size) It is amazing to see professionals in this stage of work the artistry is amazing.
The best part of this entire process is the techniques here used can be transferred to a dress form to create the same ensemble. Well done 👏👏👏
Yes!! You can absolutely do that. Thank you for watching!
@@RachelHoffmanDolls, You're welcome and thank you for posting information some have paid for, but given free here and so simple to learn.
I think it would be infinitely more difficult to make clothes in miniature than being able to fit them on a full size person. What a wonderful demonstration!
Thank you for tuning in!
Thank you so much for sharing this! 'Delighted to be learning new tips and tricks from a master!

I love making doll dress and make my own patterns. Love your way. Very nice job Robert. I love your work. I'm a doll lover but don't have any name dolls. Maybe one day
God this was wonderful. Ive done fittings for Oxxford, Brioni...etc at the little shop I worked at in CS. But now I want to make doll clothes. Beginner in sewing really. A bit backwards..lol. But...this video was the best. Never really attempted to make any patterns. Now I will for my custom dolls.
