I made my masters degree in the simulator motion platform control algorithms 30 years ago ;) And my PPL license 10 years ago. Combining this allows me to tell, that you probably need to work still a lot on the control variables of your platform. When executing coordinated turn, the combined force vector should be perpedicular to the cockpit floor, your seat should not be leaning towards the direction of the turn. You should not have the impression you will fall left or right from your seat. In real plane (very hard if not impossible to simulate in the motion platform) you should just feel the g force acting on you, pusing you into the seat. If you do steep turns this force can be surprisingly big if you are not used to it. More or less what the platform should do for the coordinated turn: 1. Initation of the shallow turn - plane banking left and starting changing direction. Platform bank: slowly to the left. Platform yaw: slowly to the left. 2. Steady turn: Plarform bank: very slowly returning to neutral, below you vestibular system sensory threshold - if the platform gearing is smooth you should be unable to sesne this motion. It can be additionaly masked by some overall turbilence noise. Platform yaw: returning to neutral under sensory threshold. Platform pitch: leaning a little back, under sensory threshold, to simulate increased g force in the turn (this will be rather crude simulation). 3. Going back to straight and leveo flight. Platform bank: to the right! Platform yaw: very gently the right to accentuate the end the aircraft yawing motion. Platform pitch: Return to neutral. 4. Steady straight and level. Platform all axes: Return to neutral below sensory threshold. The main tricks: Movements can be small the visual cues will increase the impresion of movements - our sensory system is only good at relative values not the absolute ones. Our sensory system has sensivity thresholds: movements of small velocity are not registered (especially if visual cues are suggesting that you are not moving). And final comment - as a student my duty was to clean the simulator cockpits after test pilots (with super sensitive sense of balance) vomited in response to mismatching visual and motion cues produced by our inmature control algorithms... Be careful, use gentle movements.
Yes I still have work to do on my settings, and my movements in the video were, by design, exagerated to highlight the range of motion available. The sensations created are very realistic, but I accept they will never match a real aircraft, the G forces in a real aircraft come not only through the banks and turns, but the forward motion. Other than heave and surge imitations this can't really be simulated.
Switching the roll setting from angle to rate mostly achieves this, although the return to centre function during a steady turn comes on much too fast with the way the SRS software currently implements it. I have an H3 with SFU gearboxes BTW.
I remember tearing around in military helicopters and, although sitting in the door with my feet on the skids and looking STRAIGHT at the ground during steep banking, I felt glued to the floor by the g-force. Indeed, I could (cautiously) take my hand off my rifle and it did not fall out of the chopper!
The motion on my NLR v3 with the profiles from a forums member ( Tellurico ) does something different. When rolling left, the seat rolls right. That way you feel what you feel in the airplane, namely the right side of the seat pushing into you. To me, this is the only realistic behavior in the presence of roll.
Congrats Mark. I've had my H3 for about 2 months now and love it. I can't fly without it. My first big step with MSFS was adding VR and now that I have the H3 I feel I'm truly as close to actually flying as is currently possible. Enjoy!
A very sensational feel is (at least in DCS) a catapult launch from a carrier. Likewise landing on a carrier with the hook catching a wire. Had mine for some months now and it’s really lacklustre to fly without it.
I originally thought that these are usually incorrect. Watching videos of these confirms my 'fear'. They are not correct. On his first turn out after take-off, you can see the plateforme tilt and again at 8:38. Unless the gentleman here was not coordinating his rudder with the turn/keeping the ball in the middle, these plateformes seems to simply take the roll angle from the sim data and replicating it on the plateforme, that is not correct. if the turn is coordinated, the plateforme should not tilt. The role of moving plateformes is to impart a simulated acceleration, not the actual tilt of the aircraft. Another example is when your start your take-off roll, you want the plateforme to simulate that you are pushed back in your seat. 3-DOF plateformes should tilt your chair back to simulate that effect. 6-DOF plateformes will translate swiftly forward and then swing the chair back and then while your acceleration eases, the plateforme should come back to its neutral position. Again, the plateforme' job is not to simply mimic the roll, pitch and yaw of the aircraft. it has to take the acceleration values from the sim and mimic that using the motors. These acceleration data are not related to the roll, pitch and yaw of the aircraft. Hate to be a Debbie Downer but I have yet to see consumer range plateformes do it the right way.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Motion Platforms Mark!!! Great to see you finally getting to try one, and your experience is very much in line with what I felt the first few times flying in one as well. One note I would make is that those SFU Gearbox Upgrades are almost essential if you are getting an H2/H3. I know you mention you wouldn't need them unless you are doing acrobatics but in my opinion I wouldn't buy one of these units without them! They fix an issue with the old gearboxes having "play" between the gears and it is a MUCH better experience with the SFU's like you have on your unit. Looking forward to more of your videos, congratulations!

I was watching and waiting to see if you'd do a Forward Slip (one of my favorite maneuvers IRL) and you did not disappoint! 😆 After VR, motion really is the missing link that ties it all together. I just finished building my PT-Actuator 6DOF (what a monster to assemble by myself!) and P-1X cockpit, which is primarily for DCS and MSFS. I got my PPL right around the time you soloed (25yrs ago). Nothing can compare to the real thing, but this comes about as close as we can get and I get to fly military fixed and rotary wing as well. Something I'll never get a chance to do IRL. 😂 Let's enjoy the ride! Expensive-yes. Cheaper than the real thing-heck yeah..LOL
I notice that in the turn, the seat banks too. In a turn, the forces are down into the seat with no sideways movement. The side-to-side movement would be in a straight roll.

I have the H3s rig and went with the GT Omega RS seats which are compatible and come with sliders. Also worth mentioning with the software, SRS, a good starting point is importing Jeff Weavers profiles for each game as a starting point as some default profiles are a bit too subtle on some of the axis. Happy flying
Yup. I just got an H2. WOW! Totally changes the experience for the better. I've heard that an H2 gives you 90% of the experience that an H3 can give (for flight simulation anyway). But I can always upgrade to an H3 in the future. I'm sure that the 3rd yaw motor is amazing for car racing.
The h3 yaw gives a very realistic sensation of rudder input during landing. I think it’s worth paying a bit extra purely for that. (I have an h3 and a ppl).
I am really excited that you have bought a DOF Reality motion seat! Your technical setup videos are the best! I have had the H6 for a few years and have upgraded to the better gearboxes…. Totally worth it! The issue that I have struggled with is MOTION COMPENSATION. I have not been able to get this working…. There are NO decent videos out there to help. Please, please, please Mark…. Can you do a detailed video on setting this up. I will be forever indebted 😊
If you have the h series do you really only get to use it 2 or 3 hours a day like they say on their website? Or is that just propaganda to get you upgrade to the p series? I may not use my everyday but when I do use it it's more than 3 hours is typically a all day thing
@@quintonwilliams4730 as I have mentioned, I have the H6. Interestingly, when I first bought it eagle at DOF Reality advised me not to bother with the P series. To begin with I had the original gear boxes, which I think comes standard on most rigs. However, last year I upgraded to the STU gear boxes, which are much smoother I frequently use the same for a lot more than three hours a day, and I’ve never had any problems at all. I think there may be a difference between motion in a flight, simulator and motion in a racing simulator. A car racing simulator is going to take much more of a hammering than the much more gentle motion involved in flight. That is just my personal opinion. The motion rig is extremely well engineered. Furthermore, the customer care and service that you will receive is second to none. Like Mark, I highly recommend this set up. In my humble opinion, it is worth every penny. The one thing I would say though, is that the motion simulator is really best with VR. If you just use a monitor, then it is not fantastic. I remember, when I first set my rig up, I tried it out with my desktop monitor, and was initially very disappointed. However, as soon as I put on the VR headset, the whole experience was brilliant. @@Drmerlin604 appreciate the response. I've looked at VR a few times. My concern is I had a neck injury a few years ago and too much weight on my head will be a problem. I currently use the Toby eye track. I wonder how that would play in. It might actually get rid of the delay that people are talking about in the headset, but then again it might not work at all. I appreciate the third response. It's definitely something I'm looking at grabbing sooner than later
@@quintonwilliams4730 I would think very carefully if you are not going down the VR route. The motion seat is part of the illusion but is definitely not the whole story. The range of motion of the rig is actually quite limited. It is the visual illusion in VR combined with the motion that gives you the full experience. I would advise you to try out a motion seat before you buy… as good as Tobi is, it is just not the same. What delay are performance ole reporting? I have never experienced any delay whatsoever! I am fortunate enough to have a pretty powerful PC so I don’t know if that makes any difference. Of course I cannot comment on your neck injury but can advise that there are some extremely lightweight headsets out there. Check out some of the reviews by Steve VR Flightsim Guy.

Im glad that you have had the opportunity to experience this relatively inexpensive motion platform. Ive had mine a few months now and find flying helicopters in it is so immersive with the slew axis. I for one will be very interested in your set-up and settings for the wit motion sensor. Thank you very much for your videos. I've had the H3 platform for a few days. What can I say... I'm thrilled. Full immersion with VR. I decided on the Nextlevel flight seat. Yes, you need to make an additional strut and re-drill the holes on the back of the platform. But the seat has proper flight belts. Greetings from Austria!
Can you post some pictures on that setup somewhere? I am considering to go the same route and buy the NLR flight seat but I'm a bit concerned on how to attach it properly.

Glad you enjoyed it Mark. I've had mine for a bit over a month with the new SFU upgrade. Its ok I guess, but, and yes I'm going to say it, the notchiness or "cogging" really ruins it for me. Especially in GA flight, I can dial it in a bit better in DCS though. Unless there is significant movement like heavy wind or turbulence, standard banking in a Cessna 152 is like, well, let's just say I'd rather turn it off. Thanks for the vid, I really enjoy watching them.
I just got my H3, and I have to say I feel the same way about the "cogging". I was surprised that the SFU upgrade wasn't better. As a real pilot, I have to say that the H3 is a bit of a letdown. I'll try to fiddle with the settings in SRS to improve things.
Looks amazing. You commented on banking that you felt like you were falling out the side of the cockpit. Apart from some gliding, it’s probably longer ago than your good self I last flew irl but my recollection is that the only time you feel any lateral g is when flying out of balance. In a properly coordinated turn I’d not expect the rig to lean at all. Do you know if this is something configurable in the software? Look forward to seeing how the motion compensation works 😁
That's the question I wanted to ask. An experienced pilot on one of the other channels called this correction of motion "washout" -- the rig slowly returns back to neutral for a normal 1G experience during a coordinated turn. The rig doesn't seem to do that. I contacted DOF about that and they said they're doing what the software is telling them to do, so if this is a problem, this is basically Microsoft's problem. The contact also was confused about my point saying that the software is FAA certified so he didn't understand how it could not be representing proper flight parameters. For me, I want the feeling to be accurate. If this is more of a gamey experience rather than a real one, I'm not interested. While it may feel "amazing", I have yet to hear from an experienced pilot if it feels *accurate*.
@@EmesiS It was a little ambiguous what he meant because I don't think he is a native speaker of english but I think he was saying FS2020 is FAA certified. I don't think he was making the claim that his equipment/software was FAA certified. I could be mistaken about that but that was the understanding I came away with.

And Prepar3d is done by Lockheed Martin, not a joke company "
The thing that puts me off the most about DOF products is the massive shipping costs, $925 US on top of the unit cost (H2 is $1700) to ship to Australia .

Hey Mark, welcome to the motion platform club :) Hope you are going to enjoy it as much I do with the P3 I got for a couple of months now. The motion compensation is a must though, without I was getting seasick and sometimes with my nose in the prop or sitting on the backseat or having my head sticking outside the window LOL. It is incredible immersive for sure. Enjoy ;)
Great video - just finished setting up my H3 and absolutely loving it. Have you experienced any of the stepping/judder that has been reported? I have a little, but it's mitigated with the haptic seat somewhat.
I don't have H3 but I do have a different motion system. It looks like the banking behavior is incorrect here. Unless you are out of coordination in your flight, you should not be falling out of the seat during a banked turn, hence the motion rig needs to understand when to roll you and in which direction, to simulate a lateral G effect of a turn. My rig doesn't use SRS studio, so I cannot comment if it is simply a setting that needs to be tweaked in that software or if it is just an inherent behavior.

I get notable stepping at low motion rates with my H3 too, even with the SFU upgrade, and it significantly detracts from smooth flying experiences. Had I have known about it I probably wouldn't have purchased TBH. I am hoping for a resolution of some form in the future, whether that be software or hardware.
@@jingle1161 was seriously considering one of these, but thank goodness for YT comments from you guys highlighting the stepping issue. As I'm sure you are aware, less is often more when it comes to immersion enhancers in VR (buttkicker/haptic seat/ffb controls) and it doesn't take much to break the immersion when something doesn't feel right or is intrusive. I would hate to go through the cost and effort of changing my rig to one of these only to find I wasn't completely satisfied and blown away.
Hi Mark got the p3 a couple of weeks ago,also went for the cyber cover. I bought a monstertech pilots chair, really nice it has a cutout for my virpil flight stick, it fitted perfectly and is on sliders. I didn't go for the hotas kit from dof, I wanted to be able to mount my virpil collective and my hotas on the left side, the monstertech mounts allowed this mounted directly to the seat. Really pleased with it although it takes a bit of time getting the software setup just right.
I did a ton of research before choosing the H2. You're the first person to say the yaw axis on the H3 makes an important difference for flight. Everyone seemed to indicate that the yaw axis was really designed for "traction loss" feeling in a car and wouldn't be felt in flight. I did see that axis move a couple of times during your video, though granted in very isolated circumstances. Can you comment more on what that axis adds in your experience and why someone with an H2 should or shouldn't bother with the upgrade to H3??
In a nutshell it creates a more realistic feel to the flight and just like in a real aircraft your rudder becomes an essential control surface. You may have noticed my Yaw axis was reversed, providing very accurate feedback to the pilot…bring on the cross winds 😀
This is just fantastic, I’ve just bought a force feedback yolk and then want to get force feedback petals in a couple of months, can you imagine that on top of this rig as well, I think that is really to get

Thank you Mark, that is a very encouraging review. I'm curious about how much the yaw-axis adds to the flying sensation though. Is it possible to deactivate your yaw movement and see if you notice any loss in sensation. I am trying to decide between the H2 and H3 myself and I can't tell if the yaw actually adds much to the flying experience. I appreciate yaw is critical for driving sims, and is possibly the most important feedback for racing as it gives you a feel for when the rear tyres are letting go, but given aircraft don't actually yaw all that much and that all we are interested in is the "rate of change" rather than the absolute yaw angle my thought is that it's not that significant. Definitely in the video the yaw movement appears minimal compared to the others. Could you try flying with the yaw minimised and let us know if it's noticeable. Thanks, and I love your work!
I have the H3. Yaw effects seem minor unless you are cranking on the rudder. The exception is turbulence, when yaw comes into play, and is quite accurately done with the H3.
Thanks Mark for the very nice and complete analysis if the H3. A couple of questions: 1. At touchdown, do you get the rig to simulate the thump on the tarmac, especially for not so soft landings? I couldn’t appreciate it from the video when you did a pretty hard touch n go at about minute 11 of the video 2. When you reduce power in flight, does the rig move forward to simulate deceleration? I’ve seen it does when you applied the breaks, but cant appreciate if it happens on flight deceleration 3. In rough weather, does the rig simulate the turbulence? Thanks for the info
£3200 including 20% VAT for H3 plus upgraded gearboxes etc including delivery. Not sure if customs duty would also be payable. Much as I'd like one, I'm not committed to VR and I wouldn't want to mount a 48 inch OLED on it and have it shaken about. Guess it would work if you only fly VR or have a dedicated room with maybe 3 x 65 inch plus screens. It does look amazing fun though, as, like you, it's 20 plus years since I flew solo IRL.
In a coordinated turn, proper aileron and rudder, you don't feel lean. You feel down force into the seat so the seat should be leaning back not sideways. I assume the DOF can do that with a config change.
Hi there, thanks for the video ! I'm very interested in those motion platform, but I have to say I'm a little worried when I see the plateform banking in a sustained turn, as the forces experienced by the pilot are only vertical in a sustained, symmetrical turn. Therefore the seat should be in the central position, unless the turn is not symmetrical ? It's not very obvious on your video since you fly very gentle maneuvers, but on other videos, the seat orientation seems to be the same as the seat in the simulated plane, i.e. banking right in a right turn, tilting up in a climb, etc, and that's not what I would expect from it. For instance, I'de expect the seat to tilt up in a take off roll as the aircraft accelerate, down when breaking on landing, or to bank right on a left turn on taxi. How much freedom do you have on the parameters software to set this up ? What about a video on it ? :) Thanks in advance.

Hi mark, thanks for your invaluable feedback, just a question, when you tell the range is 25 degrees it means for ex in pitch you have from 0 to + 25 or 25 is the full range, meaning you go from 0 to +-12,5?!?thks

Thanks for posting Mark. I opted for the standard motors on my H3 and lived to regret it. Even after finely tuning the gearboxes the movement is very notchy and unrealistic.
The backlash in the standard motor setup is and issue and fixed with better response with the SFU upgrade. If you are feeling the notchiness then I’m afraid the upgrade is unlikely to fix that IMO.
Thanks Mark for the DOF guides and reviews. My unit arrived the other day but I'm still stuck on w seat to compliment it. Are you still happy with the ERS1? I'm hung up on that or the "flight" seat that NLR offers.
@@SimHangerFS then I would say you are struck lucky because I have just upgraded to the FSU gearboxes and they looked the same as the ones you have do your gearboxes have a visible worm screw that moves forwards and backwards. I hope you do have the new gearboxes as trust me the old ones were very sub- power
Hello ! I found your channel a bit ago, after MUCH research and discussions I have ordered an H6. May I ask, when you are flying, do you find that a "lot" of motion is needed to enjoy the experience or sometimes "less" can work just as well ?

So ive looked at these to purchase for my P3. What i dont know is you have a different framework to house your Honeycomb flight yoke and Honeycomb Aeronautical Bravo Throttle Quadrant as it looks none standard. What do you look for to get the frame work to accommodate these please? Thanks

@SimHangerFS Thank you for your awesome videos mate! :) I have a question regarding potentially matching the DOF Reality H3 (incl the SFU gearbox upgrade ) with my current triple 42-inch monitor setup (and Brunner Yoke and Rudder Pedals) but I am worried that the immersion might feel a bit weird and/or awkward, as I won't be able to fix my 3 x 42-inch monitors directly onto the H3. My Brunner Yoke & Rudder Pedals + the Bravo Throttle quadrant will be installed on the H3 while my monitors will be in front but not fixed onto the H3 itself. After viewing your video, I am under the impression that the H3 is more suited for a full VR Flight SIM setup. Do you think I could still get a good experience even if I use the H3 in conjunction with my current fixed triple monitor setup? Would buying the H3 still be worth it even without VR in your opinion?
8:42 you're banking to the left, but your slip/skid indicator is centered - as it should be for coordinated flight. But since this is the case, there should be no lateral force on you at all, and hence no banking of the rig. Lots of youtubers have reviewed this product for flight sims and none of them seem to notice this. It's simply not realistic for the rig to move with bank angle. It needs to move in a way that simulates the net acceleration on the aircraft.
Did your first P3 have the SFU upgrade? i have a p3 but without the SFU upgrade. The new mechanisms look different to mine even without the SFUs and seem to have a screw type system.
@@patrikstrandquist1875Hi Patrik, you don't want to put the lighthouse on the rig... too much movement and your view will be shaking like you are in an earthquake. Just get that Witmotion Sensor that Mark talks about, it is super easy to install and works great.

Certainly an awesome piece of kit and would love to try one out maybe something to save up for as i have just recently upgraded my PC at last ,after dithering for so long 😂 Using the Pimax Crystal with...Rtx suprim 4090,Ryzen 7800x3d,32gb 6000mhz memory ..and after a few pimax crystal hiccups and tweaks it seems to be going ok. I did a short flight from Edinburgh to Inverness in the a2a Comanche with the Crystal and it was awesome! No such thing as Yaw vr....you prob mean yaw2 motion simulator and its a peice of junk at almost twice the price of the h3 which i have...my mate has the yaw2 and after 12mths still trying to get it to work
@@GunPilot Yes the yaw2 by yaw vr. On paper the yaw2 has more movement degrees and a faster speed though, so wanted to see a comparison of it against the h3. Havent seen such a comparison on yt yet.
I noticed that in the first part of your video where you show the underside of the protective cover, the motors with u-joints and shafts look completely different from the H2/H3 photos on the DOF website. Did they change the design?

Hey Mark - Long time viewer of your channel. Great work. I am considering a motion rig but have limited space. My question is how much room outside of the 3x5 base is needed to allow all the movement of the rig? Also, does running the rig affect FPS within the sim? I have a 3090/10700K system. Is this enough cpu power to run a rig?
Also as i watch the video of the H3 when i see the motors running through the cyber cover hole you can see what looks to me to be a screw that is rotating as the motor turns. My earlier P3 just has the standard gears.
dose your H3 when it is moving very slow can you feel it jerking like steps movement in both pitch and roll i have a jerking like step in my H2 with SFU gearboxes when moving slow control movements in flight

I made my masters degree in the simulator motion platform control algorithms 30 years ago ;) And my PPL license 10 years ago. Combining this allows me to tell, that you probably need to work still a lot on the control variables of your platform. When executing coordinated turn, the combined force vector should be perpedicular to the cockpit floor, your seat should not be leaning towards the direction of the turn. You should not have the impression you will fall left or right from your seat. In real plane (very hard if not impossible to simulate in the motion platform) you should just feel the g force acting on you, pusing you into the seat. If you do steep turns this force can be surprisingly big if you are not used to it.
More or less what the platform should do for the coordinated turn:
1. Initation of the shallow turn - plane banking left and starting changing direction.
Platform bank: slowly to the left.
Platform yaw: slowly to the left.
2. Steady turn:
Plarform bank: very slowly returning to neutral, below you vestibular system sensory threshold - if the platform gearing is smooth you should be unable to sesne this motion. It can be additionaly masked by some overall turbilence noise.
Platform yaw: returning to neutral under sensory threshold.
Platform pitch: leaning a little back, under sensory threshold, to simulate increased g force in the turn (this will be rather crude simulation).
3. Going back to straight and leveo flight.
Platform bank: to the right!
Platform yaw: very gently the right to accentuate the end the aircraft yawing motion.
Platform pitch: Return to neutral.
4. Steady straight and level.
Platform all axes: Return to neutral below sensory threshold.
The main tricks:
Movements can be small the visual cues will increase the impresion of movements - our sensory system is only good at relative values not the absolute ones.
Our sensory system has sensivity thresholds: movements of small velocity are not registered (especially if visual cues are suggesting that you are not moving).
And final comment - as a student my duty was to clean the simulator cockpits after test pilots (with super sensitive sense of balance) vomited in response to mismatching visual and motion cues produced by our inmature control algorithms... Be careful, use gentle movements.

Yes I still have work to do on my settings, and my movements in the video were, by design, exagerated to highlight the range of motion available. The sensations created are very realistic, but I accept they will never match a real aircraft, the G forces in a real aircraft come not only through the banks and turns, but the forward motion. Other than heave and surge imitations this can't really be simulated.
Switching the roll setting from angle to rate mostly achieves this, although the return to centre function during a steady turn comes on much too fast with the way the SRS software currently implements it. I have an H3 with SFU gearboxes BTW.
I remember tearing around in military helicopters and, although sitting in the door with my feet on the skids and looking STRAIGHT at the ground during steep banking, I felt glued to the floor by the g-force. Indeed, I could (cautiously) take my hand off my rifle and it did not fall out of the chopper!
The motion on my NLR v3 with the profiles from a forums member ( Tellurico ) does something different. When rolling left, the seat rolls right. That way you feel what you feel in the airplane, namely the right side of the seat pushing into you. To me, this is the only realistic behavior in the presence of roll.
I’ve owned the H6 since for a few years and recently upgraded to SFU gearboxes. No regrets and I use it everyday. Thanks for the content.
Congrats Mark. I've had my H3 for about 2 months now and love it. I can't fly without it. My first big step with MSFS was adding VR and now that I have the H3 I feel I'm truly as close to actually flying as is currently possible. Enjoy!
As a side note - I love how you turn to talk to the camera despite wearing the vr headset. It’s a small touch but appreciated.
I checked with DOF after a few comments below, and they have confirmed I do have the SFU gearbox upgrade and not the standard. I stand corrected.
A very sensational feel is (at least in DCS) a catapult launch from a carrier. Likewise landing on a carrier with the hook catching a wire. Had mine for some months now and it’s really lacklustre to fly without it.
That's something I'm looking forward to experiencing once I finish my setup!
I originally thought that these are usually incorrect. Watching videos of these confirms my 'fear'. They are not correct. On his first turn out after take-off, you can see the plateforme tilt and again at 8:38. Unless the gentleman here was not coordinating his rudder with the turn/keeping the ball in the middle, these plateformes seems to simply take the roll angle from the sim data and replicating it on the plateforme, that is not correct. if the turn is coordinated, the plateforme should not tilt.
The role of moving plateformes is to impart a simulated acceleration, not the actual tilt of the aircraft. Another example is when your start your take-off roll, you want the plateforme to simulate that you are pushed back in your seat. 3-DOF plateformes should tilt your chair back to simulate that effect. 6-DOF plateformes will translate swiftly forward and then swing the chair back and then while your acceleration eases, the plateforme should come back to its neutral position.
Again, the plateforme' job is not to simply mimic the roll, pitch and yaw of the aircraft. it has to take the acceleration values from the sim and mimic that using the motors. These acceleration data are not related to the roll, pitch and yaw of the aircraft.
Hate to be a Debbie Downer but I have yet to see consumer range plateformes do it the right way.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Motion Platforms Mark!!! Great to see you finally getting to try one, and your experience is very much in line with what I felt the first few times flying in one as well. One note I would make is that those SFU Gearbox Upgrades are almost essential if you are getting an H2/H3. I know you mention you wouldn't need them unless you are doing acrobatics but in my opinion I wouldn't buy one of these units without them! They fix an issue with the old gearboxes having "play" between the gears and it is a MUCH better experience with the SFU's like you have on your unit. Looking forward to more of your videos, congratulations!

I was watching and waiting to see if you'd do a Forward Slip (one of my favorite maneuvers IRL) and you did not disappoint! 😆 After VR, motion really is the missing link that ties it all together. I just finished building my PT-Actuator 6DOF (what a monster to assemble by myself!) and P-1X cockpit, which is primarily for DCS and MSFS. I got my PPL right around the time you soloed (25yrs ago). Nothing can compare to the real thing, but this comes about as close as we can get and I get to fly military fixed and rotary wing as well. Something I'll never get a chance to do IRL. 😂 Let's enjoy the ride! Expensive-yes. Cheaper than the real thing-heck yeah..LOL
I notice that in the turn, the seat banks too. In a turn, the forces are down into the seat with no sideways movement. The side-to-side movement would be in a straight roll.

I have the H3s rig and went with the GT Omega RS seats which are compatible and come with sliders. Also worth mentioning with the software, SRS, a good starting point is importing Jeff Weavers profiles for each game as a starting point as some default profiles are a bit too subtle on some of the axis. Yup. I just got an H2. WOW! Totally changes the experience for the better. I've heard that an H2 gives you 90% of the experience that an H3 can give (for flight simulation anyway). But I can always upgrade to an H3 in the future. I'm sure that the 3rd yaw motor is amazing for car racing.
The h3 yaw gives a very realistic sensation of rudder input during landing. I think it’s worth paying a bit extra purely for that. (I have an h3 and a ppl).

The issue that I have struggled with is MOTION COMPENSATION. I have not been able to get this working…. There are NO decent videos out there to help.

If you have the h series do you really only get to use it 2 or 3 hours a day like they say on their website? Or is that just propaganda to get you upgrade to the p series? I may not use my everyday but when I do use it it's more than 3 hours is typically a all day thing
@@quintonwilliams4730 as I have mentioned, I have the H6. Interestingly, when I first bought it eagle at DOF Reality advised me not to bother with the P series. To begin with I had the original gear boxes, which I think comes standard on most rigs. However, last year I upgraded to the STU gear boxes, which are much smoother I frequently use the same for a lot more than three hours a day, and I’ve never had any problems at all.
I think there may be a difference between motion in a flight, simulator and motion in a racing simulator. A car racing simulator is going to take much more of a hammering than the much more gentle motion involved in flight. That is just my personal opinion.
The motion rig is extremely well engineered. Furthermore, the customer care and service that you will receive is second to none.
Like Mark, I highly recommend this set up. In my humble opinion, it is worth every penny.
The one thing I would say though, is that the motion simulator is really best with VR. If you just use a monitor, then it is not fantastic.
I remember, when I first set my rig up, I tried it out with my desktop monitor, and was initially very disappointed. However, as soon as I put on the VR headset, the whole experience was brilliant.

@@Drmerlin604 appreciate the response. I've looked at VR a few times. My concern is I had a neck injury a few years ago and too much weight on my head will be a problem. I currently use the Toby eye track. I wonder how that would play in. It might actually get rid of the delay that people are talking about in the headset, but then again it might not work at all. I appreciate the third response. It's definitely something I'm looking at grabbing sooner than later
@@quintonwilliams4730 I would think very carefully if you are not going down the VR route. The motion seat is part of the illusion but is definitely not the whole story. The range of motion of the rig is actually quite limited. It is the visual illusion in VR combined with the motion that gives you the full experience.
I would advise you to try out a motion seat before you buy… as good as Tobi is, it is just not the same.
What delay are performance ole reporting? I have never experienced any delay whatsoever! I am fortunate enough to have a pretty powerful PC so I don’t know if that makes any difference.
Of course I cannot comment on your neck injury but can advise that there are some extremely lightweight headsets out there. Check out some of the reviews by Steve VR Flightsim Guy.

Im glad that you have had the opportunity to experience this relatively inexpensive motion platform. Ive had mine a few months now and find flying helicopters in it is so immersive with the slew axis. I for one will be very interested in your set-up and settings for the wit motion sensor. Yes, you need to make an additional strut and re-drill the holes on the back of the platform. But the seat has proper flight belts. Greetings from Austria!
Can you post some pictures on that setup somewhere? I am considering to go the same route and buy the NLR flight seat but I'm a bit concerned on how to attach it properly.

Glad you enjoyed it Mark. I've had mine for a bit over a month with the new SFU upgrade. Its ok I guess, but, and yes I'm going to say it, the notchiness or "cogging" really ruins it for me. Especially in GA flight, I can dial it in a bit better in DCS though. Unless there is significant movement like heavy wind or turbulence, standard banking in a Cessna 152 is like, well, let's just say I'd rather turn it off.

I just got my H3, and I have to say I feel the same way about the "cogging". I was surprised that the SFU upgrade wasn't better. As a real pilot, I have to say that the H3 is a bit of a letdown. I'll try to fiddle with the settings in SRS to improve things.

You commented on banking that you felt like you were falling out the side of the cockpit. Apart from some gliding, it’s probably longer ago than your good self I last flew irl but my recollection is that the only time you feel any lateral g is when flying out of balance. In a properly coordinated turn I’d not expect the rig to lean at all. Do you know if this is something configurable in the software?

That's the question I wanted to ask. An experienced pilot on one of the other channels called this correction of motion "washout" -- the rig slowly returns back to neutral for a normal 1G experience during a coordinated turn. The rig doesn't seem to do that. I contacted DOF about that and they said they're doing what the software is telling them to do, so if this is a problem, this is basically Microsoft's problem. The contact also was confused about my point saying that the software is FAA certified so he didn't understand how it could not be representing proper flight parameters.
For me, I want the feeling to be accurate. If this is more of a gamey experience rather than a real one, I'm not interested. While it may feel "amazing", I have yet to hear from an experienced pilot if it feels *accurate*.

I don't think he was making the claim that his equipment/software was FAA certified. I could be mistaken about that but that was the understanding I came away with.

The thing that puts me off the most about DOF products is the massive shipping costs, $925 US on top
of the unit cost (H2 is $1700) to ship to Australia .

Great video - just finished setting up my H3 and absolutely loving it. Have you experienced any of the stepping/judder that has been reported? I have a little, but it's mitigated with the haptic seat somewhat.
The stepping usually happens because your weight when sat in the seat isn't balanced over the universal joint under your seat.
Yes I have, its a balance issue I think more than anything else. More analysis needed.
I don't have H3 but I do have a different motion system. It looks like the banking behavior is incorrect here. Unless you are out of coordination in your flight, you should not be falling out of the seat during a banked turn, hence the motion rig needs to understand when to roll you and in which direction, to simulate a lateral G effect of a turn. My rig doesn't use SRS studio, so I cannot comment if it is simply a setting that needs to be tweaked in that software or if it is just an inherent behavior.
My comment was more aimed at highlighting the bank angle to viewers. More work on my settings are needed though.

Great video mark ❤. Can you please do a video on the SRS settings & the stepping issue. I’ve had my H3 for a couple of months & love it but am struggling with these issues
I get notable stepping at low motion rates with my H3 too, even with the SFU upgrade, and it significantly detracts from smooth flying experiences. Had I have known about it I probably wouldn't have purchased TBH. I am hoping for a resolution of some form in the future, whether that be software or hardware.
Same here, the steppy movements are very underwhelming to say the least. I don't get it why most people find it great.
@@jingle1161 was seriously considering one of these, but thank goodness for YT comments from you guys highlighting the stepping issue. As I'm sure you are aware, less is often more when it comes to immersion enhancers in VR (buttkicker/haptic seat/ffb controls) and it doesn't take much to break the immersion when something doesn't feel right or is intrusive. I would hate to go through the cost and effort of changing my rig to one of these only to find I wasn't completely satisfied and blown away.

Hi Mark got the p3 a couple of weeks ago,also went for the cyber cover. I bought a monstertech pilots chair, really nice it has a cutout for my virpil flight stick, it fitted perfectly and is on sliders. I didn't go for the hotas kit from dof, I wanted to be able to mount my virpil collective and my hotas on the left side, the monstertech mounts allowed this mounted directly to the seat. Really pleased with it although it takes a bit of time getting the software setup just right.

I did a ton of research before choosing the H2. You're the first person to say the yaw axis on the H3 makes an important difference for flight. Everyone seemed to indicate that the yaw axis was really designed for "traction loss" feeling in a car and wouldn't be felt in flight. I did see that axis move a couple of times during your video, though granted in very isolated circumstances. Can you comment more on what that axis adds in your experience and why someone with an H2 should or shouldn't bother with the upgrade to H3??

In a nutshell it creates a more realistic feel to the flight and just like in a real aircraft your rudder becomes an essential control surface. You may have noticed my Yaw axis was reversed, providing very accurate feedback to the pilot…bring on the cross winds 😀
This is just fantastic, I’ve just bought a force feedback yolk and then want to get force feedback petals in a couple of months, can you imagine that on top of this rig as well, I think that is really to get

I'm curious about how much the yaw-axis adds to the flying sensation though. Is it possible to deactivate your yaw movement and see if you notice any loss in sensation. I am trying to decide between the H2 and H3 myself and I can't tell if the yaw actually adds much to the flying experience.
I appreciate yaw is critical for driving sims, and is possibly the most important feedback for racing as it gives you a feel for when the rear tyres are letting go, but given aircraft don't actually yaw all that much and that all we are interested in is the "rate of change" rather than the absolute yaw angle my thought is that it's not that significant. Definitely in the video the yaw movement appears minimal compared to the others. Could you try flying with the yaw minimised and let us know if it's noticeable.

I think it's more interesting for racing. Imho, H2 is enough for flight sims, but I might be wrong.
I have the H3. Yaw effects seem minor unless you are cranking on the rudder. The exception is turbulence, when yaw comes into play, and is quite accurately done with the H3.
Yaw really helps with taildraggers, too! Flying the Spitfire was just awesome.
Thanks Mark for the very nice and complete analysis if the H3. A couple of questions:
1. At touchdown, do you get the rig to simulate the thump on the tarmac, especially for not so soft landings? I couldn’t appreciate it from the video when you did a pretty hard touch n go at about minute 11 of the video
2. When you reduce power in flight, does the rig move forward to simulate deceleration? I’ve seen it does when you applied the breaks, but cant appreciate if it happens on flight deceleration
3. In rough weather, does the rig simulate the turbulence?

£3200 including 20% VAT for H3 plus upgraded gearboxes etc including delivery. Not sure if customs duty would also be payable. Much as I'd like one, I'm not committed to VR and I wouldn't want to mount a 48 inch OLED on it and have it shaken about. Guess it would work if you only fly VR or have a dedicated room with maybe 3 x 65 inch plus screens. It does look amazing fun though, as, like you, it's 20 plus years since I flew solo IRL.

In a coordinated turn, proper aileron and rudder, you don't feel lean. You feel down force into the seat so the seat should be leaning back not sideways. I assume the DOF can do that with a config change.
Hi there, thanks for the video ! I'm very interested in those motion platform, but I have to say I'm a little worried when I see the plateform banking in a sustained turn, as the forces experienced by the pilot are only vertical in a sustained, symmetrical turn. Therefore the seat should be in the central position, unless the turn is not symmetrical ? It's not very obvious on your video since you fly very gentle maneuvers, but on other videos, the seat orientation seems to be the same as the seat in the simulated plane, i.e. banking right in a right turn, tilting up in a climb, etc, and that's not what I would expect from it. For instance, I'de expect the seat to tilt up in a take off roll as the aircraft accelerate, down when breaking on landing, or to bank right on a left turn on taxi. How much freedom do you have on the parameters software to set this up ? What about a video on it ? :) Thanks in advance.
You have a large range of options on all axis to configure amount of movement, smoothness etc.

Hi mark, thanks for your invaluable feedback, just a question, when you tell the range is 25 degrees it means for ex in pitch you have from 0 to + 25 or 25 is the full range, meaning you go from 0 to +-12,5?!?thks

Thanks for posting Mark. I opted for the standard motors on my H3 and lived to regret it. Even after finely tuning the gearboxes the movement is very notchy and unrealistic.
The backlash in the standard motor setup is and issue and fixed with better response with the SFU upgrade. If you are feeling the notchiness then I’m afraid the upgrade is unlikely to fix that IMO.

Thanks Mark for the DOF guides and reviews. My unit arrived the other day but I'm still stuck on w seat to compliment it. Are you still happy with the ERS1? I'm hung up on that or the "flight" seat that NLR offers.
My seat is great, but I had to mod the DOF cross rails to fit. Many people recommend the Monstertech chairs.

I did check with DOF, they confirmed my unit does not have the SFU gearbox upgrade.
@@SimHangerFS then I would say you are struck lucky because I have just upgraded to the FSU gearboxes and they looked the same as the ones you have do your gearboxes have a visible worm screw that moves forwards and backwards. I hope you do have the new gearboxes as trust me the old ones were very sub- power
They have just emailed me...your correct they changed the spec...I do have the SFU.

May I ask, when you are flying, do you find that a "lot" of motion is needed to enjoy the experience or sometimes "less" can work just as well ?
If in VR, often less is more immersive, odd I know, but true.

Racing guys normally use it with fixed monitors. Never tried the H6.
@@SimHangerFS Thanks, i'm a flight-sim guy mostly which is what is causing my confusion - it does seem most racers use fixed monitors but most pilots use VR - the fixed monitors in flight seems pretty rare and I can't decide why :)

@SimHangerFS Thank you for your awesome videos mate! :) I have a question regarding potentially matching the DOF Reality H3 (incl the SFU gearbox upgrade ) with my current triple 42-inch monitor setup (and Brunner Yoke and Rudder Pedals) but I am worried that the immersion might feel a bit weird and/or awkward, as I won't be able to fix my 3 x 42-inch monitors directly onto the H3. My Brunner Yoke & Rudder Pedals + the Bravo Throttle quadrant will be installed on the H3 while my monitors will be in front but not fixed onto the H3 itself. After viewing your video, I am under the impression that the H3 is more suited for a full VR Flight SIM setup. Do you think I could still get a good experience even if I use the H3 in conjunction with my current fixed triple monitor setup? Would buying the H3 still be worth it even without VR in your opinion?
That is a very good question and I don’t really know how to answer that as I haven’t tried it. Fixed 3 monitors though is how many sim-racers use it.
8:42 you're banking to the left, but your slip/skid indicator is centered - as it should be for coordinated flight. But since this is the case, there should be no lateral force on you at all, and hence no banking of the rig.
Lots of youtubers have reviewed this product for flight sims and none of them seem to notice this. It's simply not realistic for the rig to move with bank angle. It needs to move in a way that simulates the net acceleration on the aircraft.

Did your first P3 have the SFU upgrade? i have a p3 but without the SFU upgrade. The new mechanisms look different to mine even without the SFUs and seem to have a screw type system.

@@patrikstrandquist1875Hi Patrik, you don't want to put the lighthouse on the rig... too much movement and your view will be shaking like you are in an earthquake. Just get that Witmotion Sensor that Mark talks about, it is super easy to install and works great.

Using the Pimax Crystal with...Rtx suprim 4090,Ryzen 7800x3d,32gb 6000mhz memory
..and after a few pimax crystal hiccups and tweaks it seems to be going ok.
I did a short flight from Edinburgh to Inverness in the a2a Comanche with the Crystal and it was awesome!

No such thing as Yaw vr....you prob mean yaw2 motion simulator and its a peice of junk at almost twice the price of the h3 which i have...my mate has the yaw2 and after 12mths still trying to get it to work
@@GunPilot Yes the yaw2 by yaw vr. On paper the yaw2 has more movement degrees and a faster speed though, so wanted to see a comparison of it against the h3. Havent seen such a comparison on yt yet.

I noticed that in the first part of your video where you show the underside of the protective cover, the motors with u-joints and shafts look completely different from the H2/H3 photos on the DOF website. Did they change the design?

Hey Mark - Long time viewer of your channel. Great work. I am considering a motion rig but have limited space. My question is how much room outside of the 3x5 base is needed to allow all the movement of the rig? Also, does running the rig affect FPS within the sim? I have a 3090/10700K system. Is this enough cpu power to run a rig?
Also as i watch the video of the H3 when i see the motors running through the cyber cover hole you can see what looks to me to be a screw that is rotating as the motor turns. My earlier P3 just has the standard gears.

How did you connect the knobster - is it fixed to a g1000 dial, Do you have the Air Manager running?
Knobster connected via usb, using Knobster app. Used mainly for GNS530/G1000
dose your H3 when it is moving very slow can you feel it jerking like steps movement in both pitch and roll i have a jerking like step in my H2 with SFU gearboxes when moving slow control movements in flight
How do you use the knobster in VR? Meaning, how do you know what parameter you want to tweak if you can't see out of your headset?

I use a NLR keyboard and mouse stand. It is next to my unit and not attached.
