I stopped having issues with my Prismacolor pencils breaking constantly while sharpening them when I started to use a cosmetic sharpener which is originally for "kohl" (hope that is the right english word - I mean those pencils you can use for your eyes - in German they are called "Kajal"). My Prismacolors now hardly break anymore. Oh and it's not a fancy cosmetic sharpener - just the first cheap one I came across.
A tip I learned for avoiding breakage when sharpening pencils: switch the hands you use for the sharpener and pencil. Mos people naturally hold the pencil in their dominant hand, and the sharpener in their non-dominant hand. But if you swap the hands, you may find you get less breakage.
Tried that. Didn't help. I had to concentrate very hard to hold the pencil still and turning the sharpener instead but I couldn't be precise enough for that, so it turned out rubbish anyways. It just has to be a good sharpener with really sharp blades. Or I use a mechanical one even it that "eats up" more of the pencil. If it was a problem of the sharpener, it is fixed, if it was the lead, it doesn't but in that case you can't do much more than hope that it will be fine at some point.
I’ve actually done this before, it’s more depending on your hand to eye coordination and if you are able to use both hands for everyday task. I’m steady with my right hand, and it’s my dominant hand, so it’s easy for me to sharpen with that hand and I can use my leg to sharpen as well. My father is left handed but he can’t sharpen with his right hand because he angles wrong and is very awkward. It depends on if the person has good usage on both hands
The fox and tiger drawing is so absolutely adorable, I'm a huge sucker for characters in hoodies. The realistic tiger is so pretty as well!! I'm definitely a cartoonist between the two, I just love how much expression and creative freedom cartoon styles can provide!
I'd love to see the cartoon tiger again in a different medium because he's super cute, and the realistic tiger just looks amazing! I gave away my Prismacolors years ago because I literally cannot deal with them, so it's good to know that there's an option somewhere between Polychromos and constant breakage!
Tigers are so beautiful and majestic I can see why my grandma loves them. Also that made me smile when one of your kitties was playing with the cardboard strip.
I love the way the featured artist drew the tiger, It looks super smooth and velvety. I too agree with how your hand gets tired from applying pressure to the colored pencils to get a solid color swatch. It’s one of the reasons I prefer oil based colored pencils over wax based ones (ie; Prisma Color). As always, cute artwork Kattvalk! ✨
Do you know what the crayola crayons and Staedtler ones would be based from? Because I've never had to press hard to get a solid colour swatch. Just gentle small circular colouring motion and then go back over until the layers have covered the area. And smoother paper is best. It doesn't take much pressure at all. If it did require pressure I wouldn't be able to do it as I have issues with my joints dislocating thanks to EDS. But I don't know if its just the kinds of supplies I've used because whenever I see youtubers work in pencil crayons they tend to push way way too hard to the point of breaking the pencil lead and they also end up with a really patchy result. And I'm absolutely crap at drawing or painting and stuff like that. Have pretty much zero artistic talent in that regard. Pencil crayons just seem like one of the easiest mediums to colour in and get a neat even coverage. Markers and other ink pens I tend to find you can see if you go over an area more than once - it darkens up too much. But pencil crayon has always been much easier to control because with very gentle pressure you can build up a nice smooth layer. So its confusing to see so many people complaining about it hurting having to press so hard.
@@AlexaFaie Staedtler colored pencils are based in Germany; and as for Crayola pencils I am not sure. But I don’t think its necessarily the fault of the artist when it comes to the breakage of the pencil lead. Its normally because of what the pencils are made from like wax for example. Prismacolors are one of them, which is why most (not all of them) YT artists gravitate towards something that won’t constantly break. As an artist, I can confirm what Kattvalk said about Prisma colors is true. If you want a good quality color pencil brand try Faber Castel Polychromos (they are oil based) or for a cheaper option, I’d go with Staedtler. Either will work and are super soft but very durable and their points don’t dull out until after a few hours of working with them. Hope this helps!
Sally's interest in everything your doing is so sweet i absolutely love seeing the bond yall have. I got my husband a cat for his birthday but she is very moody and kind of mean so I cant really mess with her without her biting or attacking me and I just want a sweet loving kitty like Sally lol she is just absolutely precious
Your artworks came out beautifully! I don't think I've tried those Derwent pencils before. They look pretty amazing! I've loved Prismacolor but get frustrated with how often they brake, and the Polychromos seem a little too dry for me. The Derwent ones might be perfect!
Lovely video today, both picture looked great. Bit of a treat for me as my kitty sat and watched with me, she loved the tiger had to keep moving her as she was right in front of the screen. Have a great week and thank you for a lovely video.
You're such a skilled and talented artist, it's always a pleasure watching you work. I was surprised at how textured that paper was, it really didn't look it at first! Combined with wax-based pencils it almost makes the colour look like crayon... which makes sense when you think about it but was also a surprise to me at first!
You are so awesome with your drawings and you take your time to explain the materials that you're working with so well. Now your realism drawing is just A+ WOW.
I love how you explain how you should use really light layers and build up your pigment and then demonstrated it using pretty much the exact same amount of pressure 🤣 When we say light layers we mean *suuuuper* light! It took me a long time to teach myself to be a) light-handed and b) patient, it is a real test of patience and trusting the process as the "ugly stage" is very "ugly" and can last a while! The easiest way to learn to be less heavy handed is to actually hold the pencil at the far end and use the side of the tip to colour with because if you press too hard it snaps the tip. DrawingWiffWaffles drew the exact same tiger in a hoodie for her video a while back after becoming obsessed with drawing animals in sweaters ages ago, you should check it out!
The drawings turned out beautiful....my favorite moment of the video was the cat break, ahhaha cats always win with me... those big chubby paws!! I can't handle them!!
Receiving great work from you as always your art is amazing and I didn’t know you drew tigers before but I’d say they kinda are up your alley since they are a type of cat! I really like the drawings both realistic tiger and the cartoony realistic tiger with his fox friend! I do understand that you didn’t like your colored version of the first one when ever I make something nice I ruin it with color so I don’t color it! I am the artist who likes to draw in a cartoon style but more to the realistic side
I feel you Marie =) about the led breaking... I have been lucky though with Prismas... I learned a long time ago to hold the sharpener in my right hand ( dom hand ) and pencil in my left, and i turn the sharpener instead of the pencil. I havent had ANY break since. Not sure if you have tried this =) but give it a go if you havent... and just have to say that tiger is GORGEOUS =) he came out so awesome! I love your art... Oh ya! and I am super happy with the goodies I got from your shop!
One thing I've heard that works with prismas (or really, any coloured pencil that is snapping a lot), is to heat the pencil up so it bonds the core back together. I don't know details on this, but I've heard it work for several people. I think these chromaflow pencils came out late last year to the american market, so they're still pretty new! As of now, they don't have many larger boxes available, I think they brought out their 72 set very recently. This turned out great though, and I'm glad you enjoyed using the pencils!
Very cute first drawing and beautiful second drawing, love both very very much, great job 👍👍👍👍I have just the opposite experience with these pencils and the prismacolor premier🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈........much problems with these pencils and much breaking points by sharping.
Oooh I love the tiger and Fox in sweatshirts. I love the semi realistic tiger as well 🥺💕! I have used prismacolor n agree they are super fragile. I loved how smooth they color but hate how much the point breaks.
As always, lovely cats😍😍😍! I live in the US so I get my scrawlrbox weeks after they send it. I only just got my April one a few days ago so you aren’t behind at all! I have to dodge spoilers for all those weeks as it seems I am now following more people who post their artwork and supplies who get their boxes way before I do 😔
I had the same problem with the Prismacolors breaking inside the sharpener no matter how delicate I was with them. I ended up getting another set which was the Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils and pretty much never looked back since. I want to try out Caran d'Ache brand but they are even more expensive than the Fabre-Castells.
If you haven't already, I recommend getting a pencil sharpener that grips and holds the pencil in place while sharpening Prismacolors. There's one by Derwent I think and another one by Mitsubishi. I got my Mitsubishi one from Amazon, though I haven't gotten any Prismacolor premiers to test it on yet 😂

I have heard you can very gently heat up prismacolor pencils since they are wax based to melt the leads again, and let them cool back down and they'll come back together so the leads don't break as much, I've never tried it but maybe it's worth a shot? :o

I used to be able to draw cartoony, but only because it was the best I could do. I wish I could draw cartoony like I used to! Unfortunately I can't seem to "unlearn" my realism skills lol. It just shows that cartoony and realism are both skills of equal value that you need to practice to be good at.
I'm always confused when youtuber artists say they don't always like pencil crayons because you have to press hard to get a solid colour. You don't need to press hard at all, you just have to build up the layers. So pressing gently, then going back over again. Also smooth paper is way way way better for pencil crayons because they you get a smoother and more solid result without much effort. Textured paper takes ages to colour on because you're fighting the texture and it always leaves ugly white spots (or whatever colour the background is). But a nice smooth paper and gentle layering works really well. Granted I've mostly had experience with crayola (as a kid), and I have used a couple of different Staedtler pencil crayons (the Noris erasable ones which came with rubbers on the ends, and their watercolour pencils which I have a massive set of). Oh and there were a couple of Derwent pencil crayons which used to be my Mum's and they were ok, but the leads slipped within the pencil wood so I ended up preferring the crayola ones I had for ease of use. Those can't have been wax based because you could dip them in water and use them wet. So must have been watercolour ones (or at least water soluble). I may be crap at drawing and painting and anything else art related like that, but I can colour in colouring books and end up with a nice smooth result. I didn't think it was all that hard. Just colour with tiny and gentle circular motions. Avoid straight lines back and forth as that only makes the result less smooth and even.
Well I did say that you are not supposed to press hard bc you need to build up the layers. But still I’m impatient and want a solid color quicker which makes me press harder😊
@@Kattvalk Apologies ! I've seen a lot of your videos, but in most of them you do your adorable animal characters. Maybe that's just what the RUclips algorithm keeps showing me?
I have the same problem with Prismacolor pencils...the leads break SO much!!!! The difference between those and the Faber Castelle pencils is that FC glues the ENTIRE shaft of the pigment stick to the wood inside the pencil, which means even if part of it breaks, it doesn't make the entire section fall out. It'll just flake off to the cracked part once you get close enough to it. With prismacolor I've had chunks like 1/4 inch long fall out! It's SUCH a waste. I lost like a full inch of a prismacolor in a single sit down, just from trying to sharpen it.
Normally I'm not one for coloured pencils, but these ones won me over! I'm currently drawing a cartoony fox and a cartoony lynx with them. Still need to finish the background for them.
Prismacolors were a HUGE deal to me when I was in high school because they were the first professional-grade art supply that I'd ever really gotten to use. Interestingly enough years later, after I'd been using them and buying new sets and replacement pencils and all that, I found that when I'd use Prismas for more than a short span of time I'd get a really irritated nose and throat and my eyes would sting pretty badly. It was worse when I'd sharpen them but even just smelling them did me in. I dunno if it's the wood they use now or what but I'm somewhat allergic to them! That, the frustrating breakage issues, and this channel switched me over to Polychromos and I grabbed a nicely sized set that I use on occasion. Overall I DO I love my Polychromos, but I agree with you that they're a bit too firm. I miss Prismacolors' creaminess. I'll have to think about trying a small set of these!
They look really good quality pencils but they are quite pricey - £119 for a set of 72 on Amazon U.K. so I resist the temptation quite easily. Your artwork is amazing and cute 🥰
I understand that the issue with prismacolor was a quality issue and not a characteristic of the product that has since been rectified. From what I understand, I could be wrong about that. But in my own experience, I only had one in my set with an issue that the core would just crumble to tiny pieces. Totally unusable. I have replaced it and have had no issues with it.
Noting that as a newb, I'm not that good at *any* style :P I draw mostly realistic, although I want to get better at cartoony styles. The cartoony pic is cute, but the realistic tiger is gorgeous. :D
I can't really stylize to a real cartoony vibe and I am way too impatient for full realism, so I kinda do a simplified realistic look. With tendency to make animals look cute. I prefer also in other artist's works when I can recognize the style of that specific person. Copying pixel by pixel doesn't give that unique vibe for me, however much I admire everyone who has the skills and patience for it. For the content of the video: I liked both, but I think the more realistic tiger turned out better.
Kat, I started watching you like over 2 years ago (maybe more, not sure) And the way you talked used to annoy me a little so I stopped watching. Today I came back and your articulation have improved so much, I’m watching you every day now!
Love that you had the same idea as waffels with the tiger/anumals in big sweaters! I know why I follow you both :)
I stopped having issues with my Prismacolor pencils breaking constantly while sharpening them when I started to use a cosmetic sharpener which is originally for "kohl" (hope that is the right english word - I mean those pencils you can use for your eyes - in German they are called "Kajal"). That, the frustrating breakage issues, and this channel switched me over to Polychromos and I grabbed a nicely sized set that I use on occasion. Overall I DO I love my Polychromos, but I agree with you that they're a bit too firm. I miss Prismacolors' creaminess. I'll have to think about trying a small set of these!
wow time flies, baby fenix isn´t a baby anymore. i hope you and your kitties are doing great :o)
They look really good quality pencils but they are quite pricey - £119 for a set of 72 on Amazon U.K. so I resist the temptation quite easily. Your artwork is amazing and cute 🥰
Love when you post a new video!
Sharpening difficult pencils with a knife instead of a traditional sharpener sometimes does the trick!
OMG. I got the exact same carpet 😂 artists think alike
O desenho ficou lindo. Deu vontade de conhecer esses lápis.
9:09 Both!
I can draw both, but cartoony style is my favorite🙂
I understand that the issue with prismacolor was a quality issue and not a characteristic of the product that has since been rectified. From what I understand, I could be wrong about that. But in my own experience, I only had one in my set with an issue that the core would just crumble to tiny pieces. Totally unusable. I have replaced it and have had no issues with it.
I would love to be able to draw cartoon like. But I can't draw and I find realistic art is easier for me because I can follow a reference image.
I love the drawings. 🐱❤ 🐯❤
I prefer a cartoon style for myself. I love both of your styles. :)
Very pretty😃
With my art ,i am more an the cartoony side ,but also a littlebit of realism 😅:-D
Noting that as a newb, I'm not that good at *any* style :P I draw mostly realistic, although I want to get better at cartoony styles.
The cartoony pic is cute, but the realistic tiger is gorgeous. :D
Superb 👌
beautiful🌟
I can't really stylize to a real cartoony vibe and I am way too impatient for full realism, so I kinda do a simplified realistic look. With tendency to make animals look cute. I prefer also in other artist's works when I can recognize the style of that specific person. Copying pixel by pixel doesn't give that unique vibe for me, however much I admire everyone who has the skills and patience for it.
For the content of the video: I liked both, but I think the more realistic tiger turned out better.
They turned out cute. I draw cartoon drawings for the most part
I wonder if the price of these pencils open stock will be cheaper in london than they are here in the usa
I LOVE WHAT YOU DID PLEASE KEEP UP WHAT YOU ARE DOING ,I FIND YOUR CONTENT ONE OF MY FAVS
It looks like spmeone has been watching Waffles XD.
I’ve seen a few comments about this, I haven’t watched waffles videos in a while but I’m sure her tigers are cute too!
Cat approved 😍🥰🥰
I know what you mean. Whenever colored pencils break during sharpening, I just think they're low quality pencils... too bad that's not the case.
Answer to your artist question: I’m a bit of both kinds of artists. Though I do realism for objects while cartoon for animal and people.
I do prefer my polychromos to prismacolor, they just dont break...🙂
Greatness, keep keep'n be saved, blessed all in Jesus shalom

Kat, I started watching you like over 2 years ago (maybe more, not sure)
And the way you talked used to annoy me a little so I stopped watching.
Today I came back and your articulation have improved so much, I’m watching you every day now!
