      Fellow fountain pen fan here. When I was at school - sometime in the early 16th century 😂 - we had to write all our work in blue or black fountain pen. Anything written in biro was promptly returned to be re-done. I’m only part way thru the video so I have only seen one pen (I’m assuming there are more to come). Was anyone else disappointed in the first one for the price? I mean to have a see thru barrel it has to be plastic (or I guess glass which would be even more ridiculous) and for that price I want something a bit more substantial. I’m not a full on collector but I found a few that I really enjoy from Fountain Pen Revolution. I’m a fan of theirs because they actually make a super flex tip that you can do calligraphy with. Their flex tip of the best I have found and I bought several to test. I love my fountain pens but have only ever spent at most about $60 on one.

    Re: fountain pens
    Mont Blanc - it's not a flower, it's a snowy mountain peak.
    Ink converters can be loaded while screwed into the pen which helps with initial flow (only causes problems if you're swapping ink colours, though some still consider that a feature not a bug).
    The acrylic Iguana pen would have been made by turning a blank on a lathe, same as a wooden pen.
    The first pen looks like a cheap demonstrator (means you can see the ink from the outside), but most of the cost is in the nib for pens like that (notice how the listing focused on the metals).
    The first ink is a shimmer ink, not sheen (that's something different), and it would be a little visible with standard medium size nib pens. Looks great with thicker calligraphy pens.
    The Faber Castelle ink you're used to is probably art ink, not fountain pen ink and CANNOT be used in a fountain pen as the pigment particles can clog up the works.

    • @Zoeswildart
      @Zoeswildart 2 месяца назад +64

      To add to this: Chloe said she used Winsor and Newton inks, which are art inks (they contain shellac to improve the consistency, and THAT's what would ruin a fountain pen).
      Faber Castell makes both art inks and fountain pen inks.

      @ there is a huge range of prices on fountain pens-you’re right. I’m sure some of the companies that make the pens make a killing, even with quality control, artisan pen blanks, production expenses, and 21k gold nibs. Pilot and Sailor are not exactly small companies, for example.
      I own a $7 steel nib Jinhao 82 that is a quality, stylish pen that does what it needs to do and writes very nicely. I own a $350 steel nib Esterbrook Estie that is also quality, stylish, and writes very nicely. If it were just about function, no one would spend money on the Esterbrook… they both write. But I’m a collector, and there IS a difference between the two pens. It’s hard to explain until you feel it for yourself-and these are just steel nibs, not gold.
      This advent calendar is from a well-known website that sells luxury fountain pens. If I’m spending $600 on a mystery package, it better have a luxury pen. No one is buying a $600 advent calendar unless you have a lot of disposable income and really care about pens, or you’re making a video for RUclips and writing it off as a business expense. 😂
      Like any hobby or collection, there is a broad range of what people consider their “grail” (unobtainable object) where the limiting factor comes down to money. For some, it might be an $80 TWSBI Mini, or for others, it might be a $16,000 1/1 Maki-e Urushi Namiki Emperor fountain pen produced over months by a well-renowned, named, master of the Maki-e art. It’s all in what you value and what you can afford, but ultimately there is space for anyone who is interested in fountain pens. ^^

  • @Virpukka
    @Virpukka 2 месяца назад +36

    The beauty of those refillable cartridges is that they save a lot of the environment. When you use that type of fountain pen that has the cartridges, you either have to refill them or buy single use ones. And since one cartridge doesn't hold much of the ink, you are buying them constantly. So when you can refill them, you also can do it at home.
    I have just cheap fountain pens currently, but I was dropping my jaw when I went to look actual shop that had the high price fountain pens. The most expensive ones cost thousands, so the $500 pen is not even from the most expensive and when you see the ones with the top price it ends up looking even cheap lol.
    And when you are leftie you have to search a little bit where the right angle is for you with using them. When it is wrong, it feels like it is scratching the paper. So there is small learning curve with those pens. Also fun fact, there is nibs that are done for us lefties. I have not bought one yet since I have been able to work my way with the right-handed nibs, but my goal is to get one of those at some point just to see if it feels any different.
    And yeah... that is the first advent calendar ever that doesn't rip off people, but instead it delivers big time. First time also when I see an advent calendar that I would buy for sure if I would have funds to do so. That was amazing.

    In this episode, Chloe discovers the 100+ industry of luxurious artisan pens. Lol
    They are very much a traditional classy gift for a man, or a businesswoman. This advent calendar proves there's a calendar for everyone in the world!
    The only thing I don't love is the huge gap - surely there was a better way to lay that out! Or at least make it not a cavern, or hold a spoiler brochure, or SOMEthing... ...And the fact that the biggest present was the first and not the last, but, I understand, the 12-step ones are actually not Advent, but Christmas calendars, so the first window is the Christmas Day gift and the rest of them is the luxurious "extra" gifts for the following days - so it makes sense, I just don't prefer it lol

    • @sarahstokes6659
      @sarahstokes6659 2 месяца назад +8

      12 day calendars run in reverse order. So 12 days until christmas, 11 days until christmas excetra so number 1 would be the final gift on christmas eve. Unlike advent calendars where the number corresponds to the date i.e 1st of December, number 1; second of December, number 2 . So the 'best' gift was on the final day.

    • @Cationna
      @Cationna 2 месяца назад +2

    As one taught to write “properly” in England in the late 50s and early sixties, your bemusement about the barrels of the fountain pens had me roaring with laughter. I was taught italics using Osmiroid fountain pens that had rubber barrels that that had to frequently filled with ink (Quink Ink). So much more environmentally friendly than the pens that use pre-filled plastic barrels. You seem to have some bargains there. Please fill them and do use them and enjoy them.

      As someone taught to write with fountain pen in state school (year 4) in the late 90s, I too was quite amused (and frankly bemused) by her confusion... I'm fairly sure the only people who didn't learn how to use fountain pen were the people who never got that far in handwriting class (we progressed pencil-biro-fountain), which I'd be surprised by as she's an artist.

    Everybody has things to cherish. And if you buy it, the only waste is not using it. I have watercolor brushes that cost me over $100 each. Just because you don't enjoy the same, or appreciate the same just means you don't understand the reasoning behind the craftsmanship that could be the reason for the expense. For example, if you worked with pencils, and loved one brand and used that pencil enough to have it be quite short, you would know that the metal piece for that very nice cedar pencil is called a pencil extender. That way you can continue to use the pencil to almost the very end. They make them for pastels too. Fountain pens that use the ink extruder thingy are so you can use different inks. Making some of these pens is an art form in itself.

    It's incredible how, if you have the budget room for it, and the ADHD to maintain your impulsivity, how quickly you can start justifying pens that cost hundreds of dollars. That being said, yeah, that $550 one is on the higher end of the majority of pens (go ahead and sort a fountain pen store's site by price highest to lowest, just make sure you're seated and not drinking anything)
    In terms of the difficulty in using fountain pens, it's not much more difficult than regular pens the vast majority of the time... Just keep a few inked (not forever, the ink will dry out and the pen gets harder to clean - though I've yet to have one that wasn't easily dealt with via a good soaking in water), and you can grab and go. Also, nib size changes a lot of how well the pen will show off certain qualities of your inks. For example, I'm not using a fine nib for my (alarming quantity of) shimmer inks. I also have 3 or 4 pens with wider nibs that just write too dry to use shimmer ink with them... Most of those pens have iroshizuku (Pilot) inks or similarly wet-writing inks in them.
    Ink collecting is a trap. I welcome you to this trap, though, it's great. We've got shading, chromashading/dual shading, sheening, shimmering (and 'shimmer potions' to add shimmer to inks that don't have it), varying levels of water resistance, more colors than you can shake a stick at... But I have almost twice as many inks as I have pens, and I have more pens than is really practical. Also, I spend money on fancy paper so that I can really get the most out of these various properties. This is my main hobby, though, and I delight in it, so it's still worth it to me.

    also, the edelstein jade is my fave ink ❣
    i hope you enjoy your loot 😸

    All of the pens are refillable. The price is for the body. You should be able to look up what ink cartridges are compatible with each pen body. You could also easily see the sheen in fountain pen inks with a broad nib pen.
