- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2024
- Snagged this FA20 DIT From a 2016 Subaru WRX with a Spun Bearing! This engine will be used for our giveaway and with that, we have to take it apart. I don't really post too much FA20 Content so figured this would be a good opportunity to show how to tear them down, what the internals look like, how they compare to an EJ25, and well just because I wanted to.

Having an FA20 makes me happy to see this teardown! Always good to see your in-depth explanations to help those of us who may not be as familiar. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the EG build on the dyno 🏎
Have a few FA20 engine videos coming out soon to get some videos out for em 🥳
Makes me feel ok to maybe buy an fa20
Every video I watch of yours I’m slowly learning more and more about Subaru and I friggin love it 😍 your passion and energy radiates like crazy and it really makes me want to learn more so I can work on my own car some day 💪🏽
Eyyyy glad to hear my friend! Always open for questions as well 🥳
Love learning about my engine. I have a 2017 WRX and for the longest time I was looking for a video just breaking down the motor. Awesome content as always my friend!
Eyyy glad it helped! 🥳
I’m a simple man, I see a smeedia engine tear down and I hit like. You’re a true inspiration man keep up the great work!!!
Thank you Vincent 🥳
FA20 Sqaud! Love these videos. I've learned a lot in a short time watching these. You're my #1 go to for all things Subarus. Your driveway made me laugh in your last video too. I have the 2020 WRX, 2004 Impreza Outback Sport, 2002 Impreza RS, 1999 Subaru Forester, 2003 Subaru Forester, 1999 Subaru Impreza and a 2000 Subaru Impreza RS lol
The subarus are taking over 😅😅
Brave man doing engine work with a yellow sweater 😅
One love brotha
Happy to see fa20 videos like these, very in depth thank you for these videos 😬🤙🏼
Anytime, I never do FA20 stuff so figured I'd get at least what I can in 😅
Finally, someone I know did this. I have 18’ WRX. Planning to build it myself. So happy to see this 😃
Eyyyy! Hopefully more to come with the FAs!
@@Smeedia yes please. Keep it coming, Bro 🙌
Great video, it gave the streght and knowledge to rebuilt my 2011 Forester instead of buying another used engine. Worth the challenge!
My man!! Purchased a 2015 wrx with 46k and slowly been doing add ons while I’m back home I’m hyped to see all the upcoming videos of the build!
How's the car been treating you?! 🥳
@@Smeedia Everything so far has been great i did a lot of research through Fb mishaps and your videos before anything and I started off with all fluids, walnut blast, plugs with ETS TBE/tune for now🙌🏽
Thank you for going over this in so much detail! Listening to your process and expertise is the icing on this beautiful video!! I'll be looking to build (or buy my own) FA20 to hold 500 or so when I'm ready so getting to learn more is highly valuable~
Anytime! Excited that we can get some FA20 stuff 🥳
ive torn down about 20 of these with spun bearings, and after thoroughly grilling each owner for the truth, i found that lack of maintenance was the culprit on 90 percent of them, the other ten percent was abuse. when i say lack of maintenance, i mean using subaru cheap ass oil, and 6 month over 3k mile intervals. these are SO sensitive to oil quality, but they are very reliable when kept with fresh, clean oil.
It's funny you mentioned the stank of an engine when you tear it down, I honestly got a wiff of the engine when you pulled the cap off the spun bearing..I don't how that's possible unless the stank was stuck In my memory bank and drifted to my nose at the same time it came apart.. Funny but true.. Somethings I care not to remember rear themselves at the oddest times.. Thanks for the memories..
It's not really a bad smell. But it's a smell unlike other smells that is the smelliest of smells
Actually stumbled upon this video! 49,951 miles into my FA20, and I’m 99.9% certain-I have spun a rod bearing…so, I’ll watch this video 579 more times, and hopefully get it done 😅
Finally!! Thank you Tanner I appreciate you for doing this build.. I have a FA20 and have a rod bearing starting to go..
Noooo 😭😭😭 what's the game plan?
@@Smeedia don't have one yet.. was going to buy some merch and hope to win a built block from you 😂
How could you tell?
@@GaragebuiltOriginal about 2500 RPM you can hear the rod slapping.
@@ohio737pro bummer that's unfortunate.
Hey I have a scenario I’d really like your advice about; my sons engined failed 2 years ago on his 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0 L DO HC inter cooled turbo engine with 44,000 miles on it. Subaru service found turbo charge shaft broken and impellers damaged. The short block cylinders 3 rod bearing also failed and found a lot of metal in the engine oil. Luckily, this was under power Tran warranty. Subaru replaced the short block turbo, oil feed lines, high pressure fuel line and oil pan at no cost. In October 2022 he was checking the oil and heard a tapping noise. I took it to the local Subaru service center who replaced the short block and turbo 2 years ago. They diagnosed it needed an engine rebuild to replace short block assembly, rod knock cylinder 4 at the cost of $ 8046.32. They said it was out of the one year warranty on parts from when they replaced it two years ago. The car only has 65,000 miles on it. I found the old invoice from two years ago which I never looked at because it said no charge on it and noticed that on the last page of the invoice it states after replacing the short block and turbo and engine reassemble they started the engine for a test drive. The engine check light came on Cam P00ll camshaft position timing over advanced bank1. They removed the cover and inspected the cam pulleys and found all 4 pulleys still had debris in them from when the engine failed and needed to be replaced. They replaced all four cam pulleys and reassembled the engine again.
My question to you is can the debris that they found after replacing the new short block and turbo get into the short block oil passageway or oil galleries and heads and Over time cause it to fail again two years later causing # 4 rod to knock?
What do you think?
Thank you for the break down brother, I plan to do this at some point or maybe even buy a short block to play with!
Send itttt 😁😁😁
Very interesting! Thanks for doing that FA20. The farts and smalls were hilarious.
There were so many dusty farts 🤣
When I tore my boys 3800 down (blown head gasket) I could not believe the rod bearings were like new at 180k all I could think is it was the guys first day on the job and he wanted all tolerances perfect that day in 2000. Its now supporting hbeams, je pistons, ported everything including supercharger etc... went a little far for his first car so I had to dial it back and teach him in a ford fusion 4cyl ftw!
Glad to hear! Ideally of tolerances are set properly the bearing and crank should never touch one another so sounds like it was a good builder!
Since I've never seen a fa torn down this is super interesting
Little diffrent than an EJ 😁
Bro you just made me feel so much better about putting power to my FA20. Unless a piston goes through the wall this engine seems somewhat easy to tare down and rebuild
They're really not too bad to do 😁
Could please do more videos of the FA20 because I'm planning on building mine and your videos will help
Working on it, building an FA20 but waiting on some internals to come off back order 🙏
Awesome! I have an FA20 with 122,000 miles. Fully stock but running great. Looks like a solid design and seems like a reliable engine so far, but I'm no professional lol.
They're really not bad engines. Only thing I've never liked is that rod design 😅
@@Smeedia I can see why. Excellent explanation and thanks for the hard work!
@@Smeedia it’s for economy, they weigh less.
This is the next step if I want more power for my FA20. I need a built motor. Good tear down video!
Thank you 😁
Glad to see some FA20 content :)
Have a couple other FA videos lined up too 🥳
I build the fa24 and na fa25 short blocks in the outback, legacy, and ascent models here in Lafayette, Ind. I was cringing the whole time lol. So many tools we have to make assembly so much faster and easier is really apparent here. I own a 2017 WRX myself.
Have any spare fa24 case halves you wanna sell? Lol
@@Smeedia yea we might scrap a few a week lol. Don't tell anyone! I love building these things. It's fun! We build about 377 a day. That's one every 56 seconds.
Great video as always bro! IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE, I know a lot of people would love to see you build a FA20 with a ETS turbo kit! There isn’t any high quality build videos out there yet. Thanks man!
Maybe one day but that's alot of $$$ 😅
@@Smeedia I meant for someone’s project at the mod garage
Ahhhhh gotcha. I'm not really doing stuff for thrm anymore. Matt and I are branching off to start doing our own thing. But if it ever happens I'll definitely make a series on it 🔥
Excited to see the FA20 videos. Helps when deciding where to put my earnings
Have a few lined up 🥳
Thanks for the FA20 content 👍🏻
Anytime! More to come 🥳
Thanks for the fa video. I had about the same amount of trouble separating my trans from engine.
Sometimes they just don't want to let go 😅
Tanner! Absolutely love the channel. I look forward to every video.
Just got my first Subaru, the shitbox is a 2018 WRX 6-speed with 65k miles. I have dual Radium catch cans on the way, but any other upgrades / mods / fuel additives to protect the cars longevity?? (I assume the car has been
Plan is to keep it a mostly stock, daily driver.
You're the man!!! Wooo!!
Prob not a bad idea to knock out the spark plugs but aside from that enjoy the car 🥳🔥
Yoooooo! is the give-away international on this one?? Great Content too my man! keep enjoying life!
Unfortunately not this time 😭 hoping to be able to make enough money from this drop to be able to do international on the next 🤞
This is great because since STI prices are going up quite a bit and if they don't go down to where they were by July I'll just get a wrx. Still should be plenty fun and understanding the engine is great!
WRXs are still fantastic cars, either one you get I think you'll be happy with them 🥳
yooo this had me dying during the love glove part😭😭😂😂 i had to put it on my instagram story and tag you
Lmao yesss 😅😅😅😅
Watched yer video again. Nice to see teardown. Curious, what caused the bearing failure? I read spun bearings are oil related. Yer opinion?
This looks tune related, all the other bearings looked fine. If we saw consistent scoring on thrm all I would suspect oil starvation. Also could have been due to LSPI (Low speed pre ignition)
FA20! the EJ's are better, tho I've grown to like the FA more because of the turbo noises, even at low speeds🙃. Really like to see the guts and gore of the tear down😳👍🏼
Yesssssir! Finally had one we could tear open 🔥
Just know your content is always appreciated. Thank you for this. I hope to use this knowledge.
Anytime and always appreciate the support Axel! 😁😁😁
I am very glad to hear rod bearing failure is fixable and I can reuse the block as mine is closed deck and I can’t afford another one. Unfortunately every shop within an 8 hour drive won’t work on my Subaru because they all say rod bearing isn’t salvageable and they only will put another new shortblock in along with replacing everything else under the hood that has any sort of fluid going through it. Not even joking all the parts under my hood have 6000 miles and every shop wants to replace everything. I’m just going to have to buy all the tools necessary to write done and do it myself at this point since literally no one is willing to help. That’s what I get for having a Subaru and not something ls. Edit-found a small local shop an hour and a half away that will take apart the engine down to the short block to send it to a machine shop in order to have them fix it.
If a shop says case halves are nkt salvageable I woukdent trust them to work on my cars. Prob going to try and over charge everything or they don't know what they're doing.
@@Smeedia exactly, most of these Subaru specialist shops around do all of the above. If they have a fully capable machine shop why do they only install brand new short blocks? It makes no sense to me. A sign that a shop is incompetent is if they don’t try to fix the problem but would rather throw parts at the problem hoping that’ll fix the issue. I’m just happy someone is being reasonable and isn’t quoting me $20k to fix a short block.
This makes me want to get an blown FA20 just to rebuild it!!
Send itttt 🥳🥳🥳🥳
I just gotinto a 2020 WRX. I have a few..esoteric Subaru questions. I see a lot in forums about the 8 million ways to die these motors appear to have. I want to hear from some professionals regarding the air intake addition to lean fuel state issue. So is it true that, with the addition of an air intake, the ECU can only enrich to a certain percentage, then it will stop even if it is still getting lean AFR from the narrowband O2 (issume these have a narrowband from the factory)? So you basically have to have a Cobb, access to a pro tuner, or both if you change the air pre-MAF? Also, I keep seeing spun bearings from these cars. I hardly think people are banging the rev limiter drifting FA's lol. What is the primary cause of that in your experience?
It's funny to see that they made the engine rods weaker for ease of teardown. But nice think cylinder walls. Kind of ironic.
They got thr beefy wallllllls!!
I love how when you rattle the rod cap with the bad bearing it makes the identical sound my fa just started making when it spun the bearing 😂😂😂
NOOOOOOO 😭😭😭😭
Much appreciate the tear down and knowledge brotha 🤙
Anytime Nick! 🥳
Also I think it's about time to buy some merchandise my friend. Built FA20DIT 👌
Eyyyyy that's what's up 🥳
Hoodie and t shirt ordered 🤌
Your Videos are so interesting and entertaining. Love watching and learning about WRX's. 😎🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Eyyyy, thank you my friend 🥳
So after tearing down a ej25 and a fa20 which one do you find to be easier?
Also Its weird to see the similarities between the fa20 and diesel engines like the thrust washers look almost identical to the mx13 but just super small. Also the fuel system is also super similar. Some more fa20/fa24 content would be cool! Great video bud👍
They're both thr dame level oe ease imo, I guess the fa20 is quicker to tear down. 🤔
I'm guessing they use these bolts because they grip really well and resist stripping.
Please build the fa20 I want to build mine soon and 500whp is my goal, I'd love to see your video on it, it would give me a lot more confidence. I'm not confident on what my rod and main bearing clearances should be and that scares me.
We're building one 🥳 waiting on back ordered parts to come in 🔥💪
Where did you purchased the short Block? I want to start my own build.
Someone on Insatgram reached out that wanted it gone 🙏
But FB market place and offer up has some
and if i don't have IG how would i know about the winner for the give away?
We do it on RUclips 🥳
So informative! Im doing an fa20 tear down on my motor currently for the exact same failure, and the guidance in your video is much appreciated.
Glad that it helped and hopefully it's a quick rebuild for ya!
Can you still reuse that crankshaft? Or did you need to buy new one?
would you do a 6spd trans teardown and rebuild, especially center diff non dccd. i put one in my 05 LGT and center diff is done... could be a colab vid with matt
How do you know about that 👀😅
@@Smeedia I follow Matt’s channel too, but I’m mostly a mind reader! 🤣
Sense you have both of these blocks out.
Could an FA 20 bolt up to a transmission for an EJ series engine? Just wondering...
Yes 🙏🙏🙏
@@Smeedia thanks man.
Which way do you turn to get the rod bearings bolt out
I have a 18 wrx and really payed attention to this video lol, I’m only stage 2 currently being e tuned, probably not even 300hp.. with my power what are the chances of anything happening besides this to the short block? and what would it take for something to affect my long block? Just preparing for the worst lol.
Thanks for the vid tanner!
At 300 HP you don't have much to worry about 🙏 as long as your using a quality tuner and taking care of the car it should be solid
Yes! thank you
Anytime my friend 🥳🥳🥳
Hey did you have to modify or bore the block when you attached the bigger rods and bearings to the fa20? What rods and bearings did you go with? We’re the rods and bearing plug and play on the pistons and crank? Are you gonna post a video showing the fa20 being sssembled with the upgraded internals?
I'm still waiting on the rods 🥲 but no mkdification to the block should be needed.
Once I get the rods yes I will be.
@@Smeedia perfect. That’s gonna the first video on RUclips if it’s kind. If successful after installation, It’ll show fa20dit owners they don’t need an aftermarket block, they can simply add rods and bearings to the oem block for under 400 whp, or whatever the piston and rings can handle. Can’t wait for that video.
No rods yet??? I’m waiting 😡😡😡😡
@@tevvsix4321 engines at the machine shop, still waiting on the rods 🥲
Wow that’s ridiculous. You should call whoever you placed the order for the rods with and get store credit or something. That’s entirely too long smh. Their Messin up the fa content 😤
so beautiful! talking about you tanner! and that FA20
😁😁😁😁
LOVE this ! Thank you.
Anytime 🔥😁
Enjoy watching the fa teardown. Funny question can I send my postcard in a envelope lol?
Yes you can 😅🔥
@@Smeedia thanks bro. The wife be goofy sometimes.
Thank you for what you do!
Just glad I can help 🔥
Can I use upgrade rods on oem block ?
Why do you think or do you know what lead to the spun bearing? Too much power put to it, bad maintenance, bad tune or other? Just curious.
Not sure, could have been a bad tune, pil starvation, LSPI etc 😖
FUCK YEAH SMEEDIA !!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
JEREMYYYYY!!!!!!!!!
Love this!!
🥳🥳🥳
Thx for the FA content. Now you make me want to get a built engine! Afraid of the crappy rods now. Gonna have to shell out $5k for an Outfront block. Yikes!
Just don't push too much power and you'll be solid 🥳
Hey how did it spin a bearing exactly ? Low oil? Too much hard turning? I’d like to know just to prevent
Could be bad tuning, oil starvation etc not sure what killed this one 😖
From what you seen tearing down the block, what would you say the fa20 block has going for it that stands out as better than the ej block. Or at least what is it you liked better if anything.
Thicker cylinder walls and maybe better cooling. Two diffeent engines for two diffrent things though
When a fb20 build? 🥺 (or the fb24 frankenstein: fb25 block, fa20 stroker rods and crank, fb25 pistons and fb20 heads) 🤔
Unfortunately probably never 😭 FBs aren't power engines. 😪
Keep up the FA content!
More coming soon 🥳
The engine farts had me dying 😂
do you just buy your short blocks on ebay? been thinking about building an engine but dont really trust ebay?!
Instagram, Facebook and offer up 😁
So mines went out and you know everyone who has rod knock it can still turn on or still run mine doesn’t do it weird but my mechanic said it sounds like rod knock I’m confused because I took out oil was clean no sparkles but it doesn’t stay on if it’s warmed up it stays on if it’s been sitting but if turn it on while it on you have to rev it up so It doesn’t die out what do you guys say?
That would be awesome to win a built FA20. It would look good in my car.
I agree 😏
Cheaper to rebuild or go with iag short block? Thoughts?
Always cheaper to rebuild, and you can build it to your own soecs
FA20 content babyyy! ❤
🥳🥳🥳
FA20 gangg glad to see it, might be my old block 😬😂
Time to bring it back to life 🤌🔥
When you were taking the rods apart. Why did you break them free by hand vs just impact ?
My impacts not strong enough 😅
@@Smeedia fair enough. Do you know the history of that motor? Like was it tuned or something? Makes me worried about mine. 😬
I do not unfortunately, was just trying to find one with a spun bearing for the giveaway. But if I had to guess, potentially tune related, oil starvation, something could have been in the oil and made it to cyl 3. Bad LSPI could have been a factor
Can you go over the cost of each engine build when they're complete please
Yes 🤙
Why couldn't you be in Australia 🥲
I'm sorry 😭😭😭
From where did you get that engine? I have a spun bearing in my 2016 wrx. It's getting replace by a outfront engine
Found this one through a subscriber. But on Offer up and FB market place there are some decent deals
That piston looked like toast my kids would make when they were little.
Just gotta scrap off the burnt areas 😅
If only I had a garage to do this lol.
If you have a dinner table that works too 😏
Ok, we need glove love stickers or a shirt lol
Lol may make that happen 😅😅
Love the FA content, I pray to god I win this engine!
🤞🤞🤞
Wonder what caused the failure being the other bearings were ok, Poor tune maybe? Low oil would have shown a lot of wear on the other bearings
Would have been a tune, maybe something in the oil and get sent to cyl 3. Not too sure 😬
Is it possible to just swap out the rods and pistons for forged rods and pistons and not tear apart the motor? Like just take the old ones out and drop new ones in?
Yes but I wouldent advise it without proper machining of the block
@@Smeedia Sounds good. I was just curious. I would def have the block machined if I did that
I caught me a glimpse of a wing on blue 😁
You saw nothing 🤫 lol
Also quick question: I have the whiteline rear sway bar with kartboy endlinks set on neutral or middle setting. I will be installing 2 way front sway bar w kartboy links. What setting would you recommend on the front?
On my front sway I use the forward most hole, have thr same sway 😁
Hey man, I got a 2020 sti with 500 miles on it around a month ago and just relocated to anchorage Alaska.
Long story short, they don’t have any gas stations with octane over 90. My car is bone stock and I plan on keeping it that way. Is 90 octane pump gas fine, or should I look into octane boosters as well. Thank you for your time.
You'll be okay, you may get some minor knock here and there but nothing detrimental to the engine 🙏
@@Smeedia Thanks for the reply man! For what it’s worth I love your videos and content. Thank you for educating people in a nonjudgmental/ non condescending way.
I love my car, and I’ve always wanted this car. I’m so thankful to be in a financial position to own one.
Always here for questions if you get any more 🥳
Build a ez30 or ez36 next please 😭🙏
Noooo. Not good engines for big power
I asked my local shop how much it would be to drop a iag block into my fa20. I was told 25,000$. Never discussed any performance mods. What a joke. I’d love to do it myself
Lmao how tf did they get to $25,000?! 😳
@@Smeedia I was told 25 hours of shop labor and a 10,000 block. I’m starting to realize a lot. You truly are helping us all out. I appreciate everything you do for us. My local shop charged an arm and a leg. Then they’ll lift your heads on the dyno and charge you yet again. Happened to my good friend
And I would never dish out 10k for a block. I’d buy the factory fa20 and build the internals like a boss.
$10,000 what engine are they trying to buy?!
@@Smeedia no clue man. I totally am turning my back on the shop. Too vague. I had an AOS installed thinking it was a simple job. Came to pick the car up and dished out about 500$ for the service. I get it if the work is immaculate but they spill oil in the bay every time. I mentioned that the stage 3-4 closed deck fa20 is like 5-7 grand shipped and I got left on read.
bro how do i enter? my 40th is coming up & it would be AWESOME to win a giveaway...... It would be first one EVER!!!!!!!! lady luck must of got lost on her way to me cuz we have never met lol..
Great video
Thank you 🥳🥳
Any specific way to avoid a spin bearing?
Quality tune, pil changes regularly and just take Care of it
FA20 content, nice. Rod bearing failure.... nice.
😅😅😅
If you were to upgrade the rods on an FA20 (not offset), how much more difficult would be to get the rod/piston in/out of the block?
Pretty sure all aftermarket are offset as well 🤔
@@Smeedia Well, you learn something new every day 😅
Do you want another one lol just replaced my long block and have a giant block of metal taking up my garage
Any holes in the case? 👀
@@Smeedia no holes in the case haven’t had time to tear into it, just swapped a lower mileage one into my car to save time. Pretty sure it spun a rod bearing case halves and heads should be good though 👍
How does the giveaway work?
Every $25 spent on merch is equivalent to 1 entry (no cap on entries) all the names go into a list that's made public after the giveaway closes. The list goes into a random selector and we do the giveaway on a live stream 🤙
