I bought a 2005 subaru Legacy gt my car came with a catless uppipe and I didnt know till it blew up and I was wondering if that blew it up and also was worried that when I get it running again if it waa gonna blow it up again but thats dope that it wont
Perrin claims that NO tune is necessary for their front mount intercooler I was curious what you thought about this. I’m going to post what they sent me when I asked them. “While you can gain MORE from a tune with a FMIC, you do not NEED a tune with a FMIC. The computer will naturally adjust to the cooler charge temps and make more HP / TRQ accordingly. Additionally, it will keep charge temps lower for a longer perior od time vs the TMIC that will reach heat soak quite quickly. We do offer parts that MUST be tuned after install and will inform clients of those in the same manner that we inform accurately and honestly when you do not 😊 You will not damage the engine or the car with the installation of the FMIC. Period.”
I would say it’s also a good idea to call a tuner or email them and ask them specifically about a part if it needs a tune or not if you are unsure. But I’ve talked to three different tuners personally about headers if they need a tune or not. And they said no I don’t but if I want to see power gains then I would need a tune. So idk what to do
Great informative video! My question is, what is it about Subarus that makes them so sensitive to bolt-ons? I see other people trash Subaru all the time for needing a tune for everything. What is different between us and other cars?
My buddy has a 2018 focus ST and he put an CAI and front mount inner cooler and he doesn’t have a tune. I said for his intake he should have one, but he’s been running the car for a couple years now without one and has had no problems. So I’m not sure if his car specifically needs a tune for those things.
Smeedia that’s what I was thinking. I know on the new wrx when I get my intake I’ll need a tune haha. Really appreciate the video this helps a ton!! My plan is to get the stage 1+ package from MAPerformance with the AP, CAI and an etune good for about 260whp. Do you have experience with them?
@@Smeedia the inter cooler will make a great gain actually being more consistent most of fords ecoboost line up suffers from bad heat soak and if the box is poorly designed like my mustangs or my fiesta a cai will keep his ambient temps down. Now I’m no subi expert but half the stuff you listed wouldn’t throw a code on a Ford and would require no tune pmas even makes a cai for the gt that has been put on a dyno and made a gain upwards of 20 hp they relocate the maf as to not throw a code on the users car. Our new fords will also pull and adjust timing for higher grade fuels and detune to prevent knock.
What is your definition of "need" because before I ever even knew what a tune was I put a dual exhaust and bigger intake on my car and it drove fine???
I know this comment is super late but I'm hoping you'll see this somehow. I also live in Washington but have no clue where to find a pro tuner. Do you have any recommendations? Also I've been watching your channel for over a year now and I love the videos just as much as when I first started watching!
I just bought a 2000 bug eye that has a very unknown history. All I can see in terms of Mods is a turbo back exhaust.. no idea if it's tuned for it or not. No idea if it had an intake at some point to go with that or what the story is.. Just trying to figure out where to start with it.. It's just a daily driver not going for any power figures.. Would make sense to me to have an intake if it's got a turbo back system already but if it wasn't tuned for that then... yep. who knows what shenanigans I'll be unboxing.
Once I get the Cobb access port will it be better to get a tune from someone in the mainland or get someone from where I am (Hawaii)? Also, if I keep adding parts without tuning it like what you said the first 6 minutes will I have problems? Cuz I'm sure it'll be hard to buy a part and not install it right away... Great information on the video!!!!!
I don't see why a new intake would require a tune though? The air is still being metered in the normal way by the MAF sensor (which comes after the intake) so it's not like this would muddle the AFR calculations done by the ECU. Can understand why an intercooler or BOV/BPV might need it, but not a simple intake.
The car is pulling in more air, while the maf can scale it to a certain degree the car cannot compensate with thr scaling that it's at. Some cars can relearn over time but subarus tend to be alit more temperamental about it.
Man what a great video. I had questions about alot of these parts. The Cobb Acess port is for monitoring things that need a tune right? Another dumb question. I'm not ever going to modify My Ocean Blue base model WRX. The Cobb access port looks cool. It's expensive. Again a great video man. Thanks a ton.
Alot of Cara do not have self adjusting ecms, general rule of thumb, if the car had a maf sensor it needs a tune. If it runs off if SD like a GTI or Audis they can learn
@@Smeedia I have no check engine light but I was curious about the intake as well this is a first time I hear about tuning for intake. I have a throttle body spacer, Cold Air Intake and just a cat back. Is this a case where I should get a tune? Also, does the information you provided apply to all vehicles?
I love your videos bro and they are very helpful... so im kinda new to the sti world... i was wondering if you can recommend any good bpv brands for 2019 sti?
Think i might know the answer to this but what if you are running a gfb hybrid bov and are tuned for full blowoff. Can i close it halfway without a tune? love your videos man
You can, if its tuned for full atmosphere then you may run a tad leaner than normal but with such minimal air glinf back in i don't see it making a huge difference
So if you’re putting on anything that requires a tune, is it alright to drive it to your tuner? Or do you recommend throwing it on a trailer and hauling it?
This is so helpful! Thanks for always making such informative and digestible videos, keep it up man. I got a question though...I have plans to go e85 on my 2013 WRX, so I'm going to be installing injectors, flex fuel sensor, fuel pressure sensor, and fuel pump, but also which I'm installing that stuff, will be doing a downpipe, potentially a TMIC, and also a new clutch to hold the torque I should be at after this is all said and done and pro tuned. So here's my dilemma: I'm going to pull the engine to do the clutch so it seems like it would be wise to just do everything else all at the same time so its all ready to go with all the mods for the tune, but I know the clutch will have a break-in time so I want to make sure that's also accounted for before I get the tune as well. I've heard tuners will be able to give a "base map (rev limit reduction/low to no boost, correct?)" so I can still drive around for the time being and also get the milage on the new clutch. Is that safe and ok for the engine for the proper clutch break-in time/miles while I'm on the base map?
Okay, here I am again lol. So. I get it, anything that changes the amount of air needs a tune… loud and clear. But, things have changed now so hear me out… now I’m running MAPermance stage 2 ots. Ik, ik. You aren’t a fan of ots tunes. But I will say for them- i have had nothing but smooth sailing and perfect numbers so far with their ots tune made for their intake/dp. It’s honestly been great, and it’s a pretty conservative tune. So my question to you is: On a stock car I would need a tune for an upgraded tmic. I get that. But how about now that I’m running the stage 2? Obviously the tune makes up for the larger amount of air coming through the intake. So being that I’m no longer on the stock tune do you think I could get away with like a grimmspeed tmic? MA says it shouldn’t be a problem, but they just want to sell parts lol. What do you honestly think? Obviously an upgraded tmic holds more air. I guess what I’m wondering is do you think it will be a bigger problem now to add a tmic or would it be a bigger problem on the stock tune?
You can get away with running a larger top mount but it's not worth installing IMO without proper tuning as you won't see the gains from it. It may slightly throw off AFRs but nothing that the ECU can't compensate for.
what about longer connecting rods? +2mm to be exact. would it require a tune or could you run a previous tune if the only thing that was added was longer connecting rods.
Ooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu my man, 🔥🔥🔥🔥content as always. Greatly appreciate all your hard work vidoes. Btw Chris at Surgeline tuned my car last week number are awesome 496horses and 450torque. With out any doubt, very down to earth and easy to talk to. Gives a lot of tips and how to proper care for the tune that he did. Overall experienced with Surgeline are phenomenal 🔥🔥🔥.
You need a tune for tvg delete of your swapping to aftermarket part. But you modify the butterfly to the open position or get rid of butterflies there is no need for tune. No need for aftermarket part. Just gain 10-20hp and didn’t spend a dime by just modifying it.
🔥😎 yes don’t run bov on stock tune or run no bov 😬 granted I went back to fluttering. Although I have another long block and turbo on the side so we will see how long we last! Lol it is tuned semi for it to be block. No it’s not speed density yet lol I don’t recommend blocking it if your not ready to replace parts 😭
I have an Integra type r motor in my 1999 Honda CRV paired with 4WD CRV transmission 5 speed. I did add a 1320 header and catback. Also added icebox intake. Currently running chipped obd1 ECU on type r map. Been this way for 4 years. Is Hondata and tune worth it?
Also had a client ask me if he could throw those 1650cc injectors and run on a Cobb stage2… 😂 I said sure go ahead and try. 440cc injectors to 1650s fic. Well after showing him the afr of pegged out 9.8:1 trying to start it I said well can we finally ditch that cobb and let me tune your injector and scale latencies

great video ! im new to the subaru gang! i just got a 2021 sti limited! i just purchased the invidia r400 turbo back exhaust, as well as the accessport how wouldni need to tune the car? ik it sounds stupid but i just dont want to mess anything up and i also know it voids the warranty thank you for the great video !
When you plug in the AP it will walk you through the prompt on the screen and it should tell you step by step what to do, super easy I promise 😁
@@Smeedia sweet thank you so much !
Period.”
Personally I wouldent use one without the proper tune
@@Smeedia bet your a goat for responding so quick! I just don’t want to wait so I’m trying to justify it 😭
EXTREMELY LIFE changing. But what about cat delete and or straight pipe. With or without cats.
Stight pipe is okay, but the Cat delete may cause issues
Keep it up, awesome video , but changing radatior do you need a tune ?
No tune needed for a rad 🙏😁🔥
This video opened my eyes so much.. appreciate it bro. Keep these dope videos coming.. now let me get back to my build 😁😁😁😁
Eyyyy appreciate the support my dude 🔥🙏
Congrats homie! Def my favorite WRX videos. You have pretty much answered all my questions so far. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.
Glad the videos have helped and appreciate the support 😁😁😁
I would say it’s also a good idea to call a tuner or email them and ask them specifically about a part if it needs a tune or not if you are unsure. But I’ve talked to three different tuners personally about headers if they need a tune or not. And they said no I don’t but if I want to see power gains then I would need a tune. So idk what to do
I personally would not swap a header without a base map or tune, your changing the piping ID and if going to ELH the exhaust flow as well
Great informative video!
My question is, what is it about Subarus that makes them so sensitive to bolt-ons? I see other people trash Subaru all the time for needing a tune for everything. What is different between us and other cars?
Thr ECUs and potential for failure can be higher when abused or not properly tuned. Unfortunately just the way that are 😖
💯- good stuff man and right on. Hope this helps a lot of people! Keep spreading that knowledge! 👊
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you. All your videos are helping me help out
My buddy has a 2018 focus ST and he put an CAI and front mount inner cooler and he doesn’t have a tune. I said for his intake he should have one, but he’s been running the car for a couple years now without one and has had no problems. So I’m not sure if his car specifically needs a tune for those things.
Every car will respond diffrent, subaurs are far more touchy. But you won't really see any gains without a tune for the parts anyway
Just want to throw this out there main pulley light weight do not need a tune, for the last three months works great no problems..
What is your definition of "need" because before I ever even knew what a tune was I put a dual exhaust and bigger intake on my car and it drove fine???
I've watched this so many times
What about a drop in air filter
Can get away without a tune
I know this comment is super late but I'm hoping you'll see this somehow. I also live in Washington but have no clue where to find a pro tuner. Do you have any recommendations? Also I've been watching your channel for over a year now and I love the videos just as much as when I first started watching!
10/10 suggest PRE racing, English Racing or surgeline tuning. If your on the east side then GetaDom 😁🔥
@@Smeedia Thank you so much!!!
So informative & logical, bro. Map told me the same as I was buying their air intake a few days ago.
🙏🙏🙏😁
I just bought a 2000 bug eye that has a very unknown history. All I can see in terms of Mods is a turbo back exhaust.. no idea if it's tuned for it or not. No idea if it had an intake at some point to go with that or what the story is.. Just trying to figure out where to start with it.. It's just a daily driver not going for any power figures.. Would make sense to me to have an intake if it's got a turbo back system already but if it wasn't tuned for that then... yep. who knows what shenanigans I'll be unboxing.
Intakes use the stock maf. Why do you think you need a tune for a lntake?
Once I get the Cobb access port will it be better to get a tune from someone in the mainland or get someone from where I am (Hawaii)? Also, if I keep adding parts without tuning it like what you said the first 6 minutes will I have problems? Cuz I'm sure it'll be hard to buy a part and not install it right away... Great information on the video!!!!!
I'd suggest an etune, they work wonders for most mods. If there are any dyno shops in Hawaii that too is a good option 🔥
It's for both monitoring and tuning 😁
You don't need a tune for an intake unless the check engine light comes on. A well designed ECU will just adjust the air fuel mixture automatically.
@@Smeedia I would like to also mention it’s a 2016 Honda Accord N/A setup
In regards to tuning? Who does is (ie: dealerships, car shops?)
Car shops 🙏
Upgraded Turbo Inlet Hose?
You can get away without having a tune for just that
I love your videos bro and they are very helpful... so im kinda new to the sti world... i was wondering if you can recommend any good bpv brands for 2019 sti?
I would stick with Cobb if your looking for an aftermarket option, can't say I've ever seen one of theirs fail!
Just got a 2020 Subaru gotta throw that Cobb air//oil separator in, but just to be clear that one don’t need a tune right?
No tune needed 🤙
Subaru sponsor this man 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Did you mention turbo inlet? A lot of manufacturers state a tune is not required.
You can get away with not having a tune as long ad it is the same size 😁 IE 2.4"
So if you’re putting on anything that requires a tune, is it alright to drive it to your tuner? Or do you recommend throwing it on a trailer and hauling it?
Legit question! I'm wondering as well
Third!
This is a very good question?
Anybody?
@@fredastaire6156 I was hoping Tanner would have responded by now, but I know he’s a busy dude
Just drive around on the base map a bit to break it in and you won't have any issues, I'm doing the same thing 🙏😁
@@Smeedia Awesome! how annoying is it??
Not bad at all, just normal driving
Good to hear! Totally worth it for end result
A high flow exhaust “requires” a tune? Or is it not necessary but would benefit from it? I’m talking naturally aspirated.
As always .... excellent info!!
Channel rocks 👍🏽
Eyyyyy, thanks my man! 🙏🔥🙏
how about Turbo inlet? ive seen cobb and grimmspeed make em and they say no tune needed.
No tune needed 🤝
@@Smeedia thanks for the reply man. Wouldn’t I see gains from the colder air though?
what about a panel filter and post maf hose? thanks
Some panel filters require a tune, post MAF Hose no tune needed 🙏
What about a turbo inlet? Does that require a tune?
what about longer connecting rods? +2mm to be exact. would it require a tune or could you run a previous tune if the only thing that was added was longer connecting rods.
AEM cold air intake they told me no need but i always watch your videos for the Subaru what you suggested about AEM cold air intake ?
Still needs a tune, manufacturers will say no tune needed to lush their products over other companies as a selling point
@@Smeedia thank you
Turbo inlet is also another part you do not need a tune for
Correct 🙏
Any engine mods you do you should have a protune for better safe than sorry
100%
What about for a straight pipe or muffler delete, do I need a pro tune for that?
In the turbo muffler delete area will making the hole inside bigger help for performance?
Ooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu my man, 🔥🔥🔥🔥content as always.
Greatly appreciate all your hard work vidoes. Btw Chris at Surgeline tuned my car last week number are awesome 496horses and 450torque. Followed your videos and passed the pre inspection with flying colors just need to upgrade the hose from ewg to ebcs. Thanks again.
Glsd the tune went well and sounds like some awesome power! Chris always does a killer job! 🔥🙏
With out any doubt, very down to earth and easy to talk to. Gives a lot of tips and how to proper care for the tune that he did. Overall experienced with Surgeline are phenomenal 🔥🔥🔥.
Gotta hit up Brian with that Motul xcess gen2 oouuuuuuuuu.
As long as its somewhat tuned for it 🔥 what long block do you have set aside 🙏
Smeedia the 205 :( sadly but I got it from a friend for cheap figure why not lol
Is this a STI video? Or this applies to a WRX too ?
Applies to WRX too 🙏🙏🙏
I don’t think I heard it mentioned. Does anyone know if you can install a turbo inlet without a tune?
You'll be good without a tune for that one
@@Smeedia alright sweet i didn’t think you did. I ordered the new grimmspeed turbo inlet and post maf house kit and pairing it with a boomba bpv.
I have an Integra type r motor in my 1999 Honda CRV paired with 4WD CRV transmission 5 speed. I did add a 1320 header and catback. Also added icebox intake. Currently running chipped obd1 ECU on type r map. Been this way for 4 years. Is Hondata and tune worth it?
you forgot you have to tune every time you put in blinker fluid tho fluids going to blinkers is super crucial

@@Smeedia it certainly would have helped me a few years ago when I started doing mods to my 05 sti. I'm sure it will help others now. Thanks for making the video and keeping it real. Awesome work 👍👍👍
Do we need to retune if we already have an aftermarket top mount just going front mount?
Hey ,i already have a protune in my car,i was wondering if i can change my bov to a diverter valve without a tune
Thanks
If you have the Cobb intake, can you just use the map off of the cobb accessport?
Gymkhana exhaust is fun and loud..
Hey man I got a question I live in Florida and I’m pretty new to the STI life. I got a 2011 StinkEye Sedan recently and I’ve gained a lot of good good information from you so far. I watched your video on what to Monitor on the accessport and I just have a question about intake temps mine was at 140 degrees today just at idle is that bad? Florida gets pretty hot and humid here. I’m pretty stock all I have is exhaust and a pro tune. No intakes yet or anything.
Generally if IATs are 20+ above ambient I consider them high. I would not dig i to the car with high IATs. Just drive around normal and it should be fine 🙏
