“Remembering TINA TURNER - The Queen Of Rock”!
"The Mysticism & Science of BUDDHISM & Chanting: Life-Journey of a Spiritual Soul Survivor" with Author, Lecturer and PhD Scholar on Religions from the Stanford University, Dr. RALPH H. CRAIG III.
Welcome to this special edition of "The Lucas Alexander Show" - "Remembering The Queen of Rock" series, where Lucas Alexander is joined by Dr. Ralph Craig lll, a PhD Scholar in Religious Studies, where he specialized in American Religions and Japanese Nichiren Buddhism at Stanford University, for a fascinating, in-depth and spiritual conversation about the late, great TINA TURNER, her spiritual path and practice from her Baptist roots to becoming one of the worlds most well-known Nichiren Buddhists, and great insight to Buddhism in general.
Her journey is unique, her life-story, well known, shocking and controversial, but her inner most spiritual beliefs, efforts and outlook, has not been explored as much as her sensational catalogue of music, legendary performances and dramatic lifestory of domestic abuse by former husband and musical partner, Ike Turner. Eventually a Triumph over Tragedy story, leading to enormous success as an artist, which she attributed very to her Buddhist practice.
RALPH H. CRAIG III is a scholar of religion whose research focuses on pre-modern South Asian Buddhism and late nineteenth- and twentieth-century American religious history. He received his B.A. in Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University and his Ph.D. in Religious Studies at Stanford University. His dissertation is a study of early medieval representations of Buddhist preachers across South Asian Buddhist literature. His research interests include religious authority, religion and race, popular culture, metaphysics, and philosophy. He has a forthcoming religious biography of Tina Turner titled, Dancing in My Dreams: A Spiritual Biography of Tina Turner (Eerdmans Publishing, 2023), which explores the place of religion in the life and career of pop culture icon Tina Turner and examines her development as a Black Buddhist teacher. His future projects include a monograph on Buddhist preachers in Mahāyāna Buddhist sūtras, a Black Buddhism documentary reader, and a monograph on the SGI-USA Nichiren Buddhist organization.
When Tina Turner reclaimed her throne as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 1980s, she attributed her comeback to one thing: the wisdom and power she found in Buddhism. Her spiritual transformation is often overshadowed by the rags-to-riches arc of her life story. But in this groundbreaking biography, Ralph H. Craig III traces Tina’s journey from the Black Baptist church to Buddhism and situates her at the vanguard of large-scale movements in religion and pop culture.
Paying special attention to the diverse metaphysical beliefs that shaped her spiritual life, Craig untangles Tina’s Soka Gakkai Buddhist foundation; her incorporation of New Age ideas popularized in ’60s counterculture; and her upbringing in a Black Baptist congregation, alongside the influences of her grandmothers’ disciplinary and mystical sensibilities. Through critical engagement with Tina’s personal life and public brand, Craig sheds light on how popular culture has been used as a vehicle for authentic religious teaching. Scholars and fans alike will find Dancing in My Dreams as enlightening as the iconic singer herself.

Thank you Lucas and Ralph for this phenomenal interview. It is the most intelligent interview I have heard about the career and legacy of Tina. So thoughtful, insightful, compassionate and interesting. Such a great point about the institutions and figures around the world who felt the need to mark Tina's passing. That really is a testament to Tina's importance to people the world over. The Bearskins, on instruction from King Charles, have NEVER marked the passing of ANY OTHER performer in that way. I think you are right, Lucas, the kind of spirit that Tina carried gave her movements, her voice and her speech something that went way beyond song and dance. What she gave out to people on stage - and this is both before and after we all learned her "story" - connected with people at a visceral level and uplifted them. Tina's LOVE for her audience is apparent even on camera and her generosity of spirit towards "The People" is palpable. Losing Tina for people all around the world is to lose the figure who has given us hope that a bad chapter does not have to be the end chapter, hope that we can go on learning, adapting and growing. In that sense many of us have lost our muse. I am reading "Happiness Becomes You" right now. Ralph your understanding of Tina and Anna Mae is is so profound and holistic. I LOVE your insight as to when "TINA" was born - her moment of taking power. I am going to HAVE TO get your book!! Thank you Both. xx

Spot on Lucas regarding Tina never going through the therapy or healing.... I think the music was her outlet for channelling her own emotional pain and sadness, that's why she was able to keep going and being original with every single performance and every single song, that's why nobody can ever repeat the attitude she had.
Her body collapsed eventually because of avoidance and resistance of her own emotional pain.
The people around her reminding her the abuse were her law of attraction, her dreams were the messages from her own soul to herself, buddhism was her way to survive as you said, but not to live.
I wish Tina to heal her precious soul on the other side.

Another great interview Lucas! Great talk from Dr. Craig! I am so glad I got to see Tina in concert, though it was once and her last tour. I also think that had she took care of her blood pressure sooner, she’d still be here. 83 seems too young for someone like Tina to pass. I hope more people get to learn about her beyond the “What’s Love…” movie and only a few songs that’s she known for. Her career and life was so much more than what most people know about.

Maybe Ralph Craig can answer why Tina and Ronnie had a bad relationship. Ronnie wasn't at his mom's wedding. And Ronnie was only seen in 2 or 3 pictures with Tina at her home in the UK. So he died without him and his mom on good terms.

Tina number 1 was always on partial to Craig because he was her love child. Made out of love with this father from Ike's band. They were a couple. When he left it was only her and Craig. She even had her own little apartment for herself and Craig. But when she moved in with Ike, and she got pregnant as a result of their sexual affair, she was ashamed. Because Lorraine was pregnant at the same time. Then her first time being beaten by Ike was while she was pregnant with Ronnie. Then when she had him he came out looking JUST LIKE IKE. With Craig she had time to bond with him motherly. With Ronnie, remember she had him on a Thursday and was back on stage the following Saturday. She never truly got the chance to bond with him.. that's when their career went into high demand and ike started booking them all over the country. So Craig always had that motherly foundation that Tina set for him.. but Craig was instantly left with housekeepers as an infant. Even when they returned home Ike would keep Tina in the studio all day and night so she rarely got a chance to spend with them. Craig was the only one that would cry when Ike beat Tina. Ronnie nor Ike Jr or Michael ever emotionally reacted because they all had Ike genetics. Tina was also fond of Craig because he looked like her and his dad. Ronnie was a constant reminder of Ike. Even when he was grown he became abusive to his women and wife just like Ike. He felt some kind of way about his mom being absent whereas Craig never felt the same. So yes Craig was very involved in her life after Erwin whereas Ronnie wasn't. I personally always thought that Craig was gay and struggled with that. Plus the PTSD from hearing the beatings his mom received and then seeing her bruises afterwards. Craig was so handsome just like his dad. ❤

I believe Rhonda Graam, Erwin Bach and Roger Davies keep from Tina Turner that Eddy Armani Hampton was trying to get in touch with her because none of them like Eddy and they didn't want Tina communicating with Eddy. He shouldn't have written the book that only pushed Tina feather away from Eddy. He should have found another way to get in touch with Tina maybe one of the band members.

Correction Tina did take medication for her Blood pressure Tina didn't like the way the medication made her feel so she stopped taking it. And started Holistic drugs which wasn't drug enough. She was on dialysis for 9 months so she could have a Kidney transplant. So did Tina's new Kidney stop working and that's what caused her death

Someone should have helped to see she was her mother. Tina and her mom were both in an Abusive marriage relationship. They both escaped from their ABUSIVE husbands and hid. Leaving their children to be taken care of by relatives and friends. The only thing is Tina Turner Bach had a dream and she reached it and won. Tina didn't feel love as a kid. And Tina Turner's kids didn't feel love as children. And you can see in Craig when Tina finally saw he was depressed. Tina Turner was an unhappy woman before she became happy. Erwin stated in an interview Tina was an unhappy, lonely woman who was hard to please. Good thing he had the patience to love her. Because Craig did exactly what Tina did when she was depressed she committed Suicide by taking pills and Craig shot himself. He knew his mom was in good hands with Erwin. It was Craig's decision that he didn't want to be here anymore. Tina Turner never said if Craig wrote a SUICIDE LETTER. Tina was her mom and Craig was Tina Turner his mom. That is why Tina and Craig were close. When Tina and Ronnie weren't.

Now I seen this men Ralph Craig in pictures with Tina Turner. So he was close to Tina Turner. So he knows some things. And why would he wait until Tina Turner Bach dies to write a book did Erwin or Roger give their blessings. Why not write it while Tina Turner was alive so she could write a forward or insert.

Just think Ike Turner stated in his book he wanted to live in Germany. Tina did everything Ike wanted to do and be. She lived in Germany with Erwin and she became the biggest Star using the Ike Turner stage name for her Tina Turner.

So Tina Turner turned into Ike Turner teaching the band members and dressing her dancers. He was in her head and the way we know that is Tina Turner thinking about Ike on that Dialysis machine and Erwin said it himself in an interview with Oprah after their Wedding that he wanted to forget her last relationship. But she couldn't because Ike Turner was in her head. Like Oprah Winfrey said in Tina Turner HBO Documentary if you don't take care of your past it will HUNT you. Yes she CHANTED but she needed therapy.

You misunderstood what Erwin was saying on the Oprah interview, he was simply saying enough of the Ike Turner questions which Tina herself had been complaining about for a longtime but the media didn't listen. I'm not sure where you got it from that Ike was always on her mind as if she was constantly haunted by him, she or Erwin have never said anything like that, she was able to successfully move on with her life and find peace but from time to time she'd have nightmares about her horrific past life with Ike(this is normal for trauma victims) it's called being triggered, it does not necessarily mean they are consumed by such am experience or that they have not healed.

Looking at him he is obviously an 80s baby. Possibly late 70s baby. No way that he discovered Nichiren Buddhism and Nam Myoho Renge Kyo BEFORE discovering Tina😅 Most black Americans who were born 1977 and later who have studied or practiced specifically Soka Gakkai Buddhism learned about it from Tina's Biopic and her book and interviews. This was not something that black Americans were exposed to. It was always Christianity or Islam and for some Judaism. I'm not buying that. But the whole interview in general is excellent. I just don't believe that 1 part. Simply because of his age.

Lucas Alexander explain why Tina Turner son Ronnie Turner wasn't at Tina Turner Bach's wedding. Craig was there but Ronnie are her niece Jacqueline weren't there. I am sure Alline who has passed on and watching from Heaven how badly Tina Turner treated her daughter Jacqueline not inviting her to her home or wedding and not putting her in her WILL. Tina and her son Ronnie were probably on bad terms.

    • @edmundsishange3608

What are you talking about, when did Tina treat Jacqueline badly? Jacqueline was very much fond of her Aunt and how do you know whether or not Tina left any money for her and others? Apparently she settled her will while still alive. As for Ronnie she and Tina haven't had a good relationship for years due to him abusing drugs but she continued supporting him financially
