    What a wonderful genuine loving man. I found this video by accident. I had intended to listen for a few minutes, but after a few minutes I could not leave it and listened to every word for almost one and a half hours until the end. Anything else I would have done would have taught me little. This has taught me so much. Thank you

      ReiTuG, Thank you for this kind affirmation and for visiting this special RUclips channel. We hope you will return often. Yes, the content on this channel is what the world most needs today and is seldom publicized. The core of this channel and its cross-tradition, universal message is contained in the “Life Journey” series; of which Abbot Okumura is one contributor. The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest teachers living today who are mostly unknown to the popular culture. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. We suggest doing one sequential module per day or on some regular schedule. The journey begins with “The Presence.” ruclips.net/video/gekfR1jrsko/видео.html

      Mountain Oneness, Yes…Zazen is life transforming. In fact, anytime we find a path allowing us to practice the truth, “We are part of it,” transformation happens. When we become One with the Mountains, life changes; when the In-finite is revealed in the finite, when the Whole is exposed in the particular, when a glimpse of Timelessness is transparent through time, these are the igniting encounters that change life. The meaning of life is, to give life meaning. If this is what one wants.
    To ask questions, one will have to go on a search for an answer. But if one does not ask questions, one does not have to go and find answers. .... If the wind does not blow, the bell won`t ring and if I am deaf, I can`t hear a sound. .....
    Without our senses we cannot experience anything here on this 3d level.
    Just do what you love and what feels good.
    When I just go and sit down and think of nothing, make myself go into a space of awareness, without any questions or expectations, I usually get downloads from source. I will have ideas come to me and then I will have to get up immediately and start creating those ideas. Usually the end result is very satisfying and it makes me feel very good. Feeling good is what one could call a "meaningful" goal to have. Blessings from Germany.

      Christina, what beautiful reflections and sharing! Thank you! The human family and our small planet need more of these “downloads from source” today. Nurturing this practice and planting these seeds is the purpose of this channel.
      We are glad you have discovered this channel. We hope you will return often and share your Comments freely. There are many videos on this channel. The core teaching is presented in the “Life Journeys” series (check out the Playlists - 49 short videos in this series have been released to date). The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura and Sister Joan Chittister. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. To advance in becoming a contemplative practitioner, we suggest encountering one sequential module per day or some other regular schedule that works for you. The journey begins with “The Presence.” ruclips.net/video/gekfR1jrsko/видео.html. This sequential contemporary contemplative practitioner journey is an excellent opportunity for solitary inquiry or shared group discussion. We know of no stronger existing material to nurture a deep journey in today’s world; for a beginning seeker or a master. This kind of practice seems pure and authentic and coincides with my personal intuition. Traditionally I've been sitting and counting my breaths, but in reality this is attaching to the breath, which can not only seem to escape the coming and going of thought, but masks or overlays the observation of the natural flow, which can be distracting.

    • @Interiormythos
      @Interiormythos  2 года назад +2

      Anton, Beautiful reflections. Thank you! We also find it helpful to remember the objective of all our interior practices is not necessarily to count or not count the breaths, or anything else. The objective of the solitary practitioner is finally to manage consciousness, not simply when one is sitting, but in all of the encounters and situations of one’s life. Thus, sometimes it is appropriate to count the breaths, if it is helpful, and…sometimes it is appropriate to not count the breaths, if it is helpful. And sometimes it is appropriate to abandon our attachment to all our special practices and simply surrender to the flow of life that bears no self-consciousness of any human-devised method because it enters the depth of consciousness Itself. Beyond…beyond…beyond… Another module on this channel you may wish to encounter is We Are Flow Beings: ruclips.net/video/o5lpzECzq3E/видео.html

    Congrats to the editor, very well cut, subtitled, right lighting and the sound was perfect. It's such a pity to find a lecture by a sage with poor audio. Not that it becomes unusable, but it's certainly distracting.
    As of contents of this interview, it's overwhelming. I'm speechless.

      SaFa’s chess, we agree. “Transparent Works,” which produces all of the material on this channel is THE BEST. There are many modules here that leave us all “speechless!”
      We are grateful you discovered this channel. We hope you will return often and share your comments freely.
      If you wish to adopt a regular practice of exploring a deep personal journey within this 21st Century global village we share, consider the sequential steps of the “Life Journeys” series you can discover in the Playlists on this channel. We know of no more important practice for humanity today than re-connecting with the universal Deep Place and allowing this connection to modulate our thinking and action. This material can nurture the beginning seeker or the well-practiced master. Our world needs contemporary contemplative practitioners.
      The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura, Sister Joan Chittister, and many others from the East and the West. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. Think of each module (Station) as a component of daily practice or study like a foundational dharma talk or contemplative catechism.
      To advance in becoming a contemplative practitioner, we suggest encountering one sequential module per day, or some other regular schedule that works for you. The journey begins with an awareness of “The Presence.” ruclips.net/video/gekfR1jrsko/видео.html. This sequential journey is an excellent opportunity for solitary inquiry or shared group discussion. The top Comment listed under each module contains a context for the specific video on screen and a link to the next sequential station. We hope to see more comments and reflections from you again soon. We will always attempt to respond.

    I’ve always been searching for the meaning of my existence and my life. Still

    • @Interiormythos
      @Interiormythos  2 года назад +4

      Nhung, Yes…this search for meaning is a lifelong, day by day, pursuit. And…as with everything that is true, the answer is always hidden in paradox. In this case, we discover the meaning of life by not looking for it! This statement is, of course, not true!…but true. DH Lawrence penned the following poem: Those who go searching for love… Only make manifest their own lovelessness… And, the loveless never find love…Only the loving find love…And, they never have to seek for it! If one substitutes the word “meaning” for “love,” one gets a feel after the message. Étienne Madore, you are absolutely correct about the “masterpiece” that this module and many others on this channel represent. And, we understand the violation we all experience with the commercialization required to present such material. We resisted releasing the creations of “Interior Mythos Journeys” to RUclips for many years however, 7 months ago we relented and began putting material here because this is where the people are! Thus, we can now share this important message.

    With simplicity Abbot Shohaku Okumra communicates what is most profound - the paradox of reality and how to live with it. Modern Western Philosophy was paraphrased by Noam Chomsky as "Obtain wealth; think of none other than self." How far removed it is from Zen. J.J. Krishnamurti said that it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. We don't pay attention to the messages we are getting even in the face of all the pollution we are creating - and we know since the sixties that our way of life is unsustainable. Think of social media as a way to create more "mind," more distraction and addictive behaviours. There is a better way as clearly explicated here by Abbot Shohaku. Many thanks for this beautifully put-together video.

    I had a strange experience where I suddenly became aware that I'm "not here." There's a body, but there's nothing "inside" my head--it's just mirrors, an organism, feelings, and thoughts. I realized that the thoughts aren't "mine" they are just thoughts. Becoming aware that if "I" was not what I thought but realizing there WAS still the experience of awareness changed how I see things.
    My mind now wants to get "back" to this understanding and I am constantly tense. I keep seeking knowledge but a part of me things that maybe it's time to focus more on silence and meditation. Too much thinking.

    I’ve been trying to understand the difference between Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism aside from the philosophy of non dualism and Brahma that exists in AV. I listened to this whole talk and two points have lead me to know that they’re both essentially the same. One is that he mentioned that there is no difference between the knowledge and the knower and two when Buddha woke up to the reality of truth but knew that words would be futile to try and tell others about it, it was Brahma who told him that he must teach it to the world. I know it sounds far from the reality of truth that Buddhism tries to convey, but seems Brahma, Buddha, you, me, ant, tree, we are all interconnected.

      Dustin’s Unbelievably Spiritual Channel, thank you for this reflection. Because we were not so certain about what “spiritual” means in the new world, we started this channel attempting to use contemporary language to connect us with the same Deep Place all human beings throughout all ages have always shared; if they have chosen to be “awake” to It. Today’s sage is walking through a quantum scientific forest and needs some language in harmony with the path.
      We are grateful you discovered this channel. We hope you will return often and share your comments freely. There are many videos on this channel. The core teaching is presented in the “Life Journeys” series (check out the Playlists: 49 short videos in this series have been released to date). To advance in becoming a contemplative practitioner, we suggest encountering one sequential module per day or some other regular schedule that works for you. Wow that was so interesting! He's a great speaker 🙏 Are Zen Buddhist monks vegan? He never mentioned anything, just wondering. Also, do we know if it's a complete no-no for a beginner to start practicing zazen with earplugs on? Or is it ok, just not ideal?

      Theodora, we are very grateful you have discovered this special channel and hope you will return often as you evolve your deep personal practice. These are great questions. Please continue to use this platform as a means of deeper dialogue. No, not all Zen Buddhist monks practice a vegan diet. You will find great variance in dietary practices among monastics. Wearing earplugs during practice? Now, this is a deep and interesting question. Please remember that all interior practice has the intent of managing consciousness. Ear plugs, feeding one’s interior with an external source, may defeat the purpose of practice, OR, it may enhance it in some circumstances. We all experience that music can provide the important function as it delivers us “out of our minds!” This is certainly an objective of Zazen. So as with most deep things, it is not entirely one way or another and you and your personal journey provide the ultimate context.
      You may deeply appreciate an encounter with the Life Journey series, available on the home page of this channel. It provides a sequential, guided, experiential path for the contemporary contemplative practitioner. It can provide a helpful teaching tool for solitary inquiry or group discussion.

    The teaching should be kept simple, one that everyone can understand. This teaching is called... "KIND". If humans were to follow this simple way of life with themselves and others we would all achieve an enlightened society. Unfortunately we live in a social structure of over complicated concepts, teachings and ideas who use their intelligence to manipulate others.....to control and harm..we ate still a long way off understanding the simplicity of life which is rather ironic.....❤️

      Stevan Allen, kindness is the way. As Thich Nhat Hanh reminded us, “there is no way to kindness, kindness is the way!” From our perspective, this path is best discovered, nurtured, and sustained upon the foundation of an authentic practice life; a connection with the Deep Place. It is only this connection that can move us beyond the swamp of constantly changing human thoughts and feelings.

    Extremely interesting. I have 2 questions; Since zen practice is, among other things, about overcoming any desire (which by the way is a desire by itself) are the 4 Buddhist vows also founded on desire? Isn't that contradictory? Also, when he says that repentance is founded on realising we are incomplete (which is humility), doesn't that contradict with the zen aim of realizing and accepting suchness and the zen idea that nothing is incomplete or lacking, but everything just is? Maybe zen deviated so far from Buddhism that it is another philosophy altogether. Excuse me if i dont understand, i am a Christian westerner with no Buddhist background but i have an intellectual interest in its philosophy, especially zen philosophy and practice. I would appreciate it if anybody can answer. Zen looks to me more like a philosophy and practice/way of life, while Buddhism looks like more of a religion (with philosophical aspects of course, as does eny religion...).

    Okumora says, that in his lineage, they don't follow the breath or count the breath, but still have the attention in the belly. How is this possible, because I assume, that having the attention in the belly is to focus on the belly? Can anyone explain, because I'm very interested in learning this way to meditate.

    • @Interiormythos
      @Interiormythos  2 года назад

      Robyn, Thank you for sharing this insightful question. And…thank you for your presence on this channel. Interior Mythos Journeys is in the process of releasing 14 modules of the most-recent interview with Abbot Okumura in which he further addresses your question. However, in our discussion of your question, it is important to remember that at the heart of all Truth and personal encounter with Reality, is a paradox. Fundamental to the Soto Zen tradition is the practice of “dropping off of body and mind” (Dōgen). Focus upon the breath is certainly a means for delivering one’s attention deeper into one’s interior (say… “the belly”). And…in a sense, you have answered your own question which, in your intention and desire to “learn this way to meditate” is a practice; which is to say that this is not an intellectual understanding but rather an existential practice. Therefore, “drop off body and mind” and go practice! The breath and the belly will, at a deep level, begin to interpenetrate but not in some rational understanding. The “answer” will be revealed within this very experience and personal practice. Following is a link to the 4th module of “Life Journey #1,” “The Awakening.” This may provide some further context for your exploration. ruclips.net/video/RzbEZ-l_k7w/видео.html

    I really enjoyed listening to this Zen monk.
    But it didn't cease to conflict me, or feel that what he says is contradictory when he talks about the "practice" of "sitting".
    Ok, you can "sit" not to seek enlightenment, but oh, it's not just about sitting naturally, it's sitting WITH RULES and in order to be "a good boy" you have to comply with them: you have to deep breath up to your abdomen, keep your spine straight and, on top of that, sit cross-legged on the floor as in Japan! (the latter deduced from the furniture or rather no furniture in the room).
    But since in general everything he says seems to make sense (and is beautiful!), I don't want to close myself to the way he shares his understanding of the Buddha's teachings... rather I would like to analyze it more...

The entire universe is sitting, using this body and mind; that’s all. This zazen is itself dropping off of body and mind. Having arrived directly at the present, I am filled up and not hungry.” -Shohaku Okumura Please continue to explore this channel. 11:08 What does that mean "to become a buddhist scholar or a monk or practitioner"? Lay person or monk, both are practitioner. 11:32 WOW! That's very impressive!! Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese and two European languages! Amazing! Very SERIOUS practitioners! 14:52 From Shakyamuni, monk was not allowed to 'own' ANYTHING at all. Of course nowadays this is not always possible.

      Fils de Jean Noir. Thank you for these wonderful reflections and for sharing your insights and questions on this channel. We are glad to have you here. Yes, what the world needs today are more serious “practitioners;” not more scholars. May we all find our way to daily practice. Please consider these two foundations of “practice:” The Practice of Deep Listening ruclips.net/video/P4nQ-SGi1Kw/видео.html and The Practice of Deep Breathing ruclips.net/video/xYO_L_d99aY/видео.html .

      @@Interiormythos Thank you for your nice reply! I'm only at the beginning of the video. I haven't finished it yet. Abbot Shohaku is so lovely! I'm going to watch all his videos.

    34:45, So his teacher says "attention is here, but it should go down here", I don't understand didn't he say that we don't focus on anything, not counting, not watching the breath. So we have to make shure we breath abdominally and deeply, so after all we have to watch something, whether we are breathing abdominally and deeply or not. And 40:40, his teacher says "this is done with our body, not with our mind", So you can't say to yourself stop thinking, it has to be done with the body, and by this he means to return to these 4 points of, posture, open eyes, letting go of thought and deep breathing? And also it would be very beneficial if he shares some knowledge on how to sit cross-legged, he probably has a lot of info regarding that matter too. In some zen temples they do yoga so that their bodies are capable of sitting for longer hours. Please answer only if you know your stuff.

      @user-dy5bd4pb4c, thank you for these excellent observations, questions, and dilemma. If you are seeking the right answer, we definitely don’t know our stuff and have nothing to say. Our guess is that no one “out there” has the right answer for you either. However, if you can ask the question of your own essential reality in order to discover your answer to this non-rational dilemma of living and personal practice, not of the mind, we are very confident a journey awaits you with the potential to deliver you the same Deep Place with which Abbot Okumura is personally very intimate. Our very best suggestion for you is to consider taking the journey of practice illuminated by the “Life Journey” series you will find on the home page of this channel. It is a sequential guided curriculum for contemporary contemplative practitioners. Check it out. We hope to hear from you again. GO Deep!

      Maria, sorry we are slow in responding to you. Thank you for this affirmation. Please check out the latest interview with Abbot Okumura which you can encounter at:

      One nurturing practice you may wish to consider, is establishing a regular practice of going through the “Life Journey” series in sequence, one-at-a-time, on some regular schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). Many people are finding this helpful solitarily or to share with a friend or group discussion. The series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura, Sister Joan Chittister, Kaira Jewel Lingo, Adam Bucko, and many others: East and West.
      If you post a Comment at the end of a segment, someone we will respond and other people around the world can be helped by your reflection.
      The journey begins with an awareness of “The Presence.” ruclips.net/video/gekfR1jrsko/видео.html. A sequential journey ensues.
      The top Comment listed under each module contains a context for the specific video on screen and a link to the next sequential station.

      Keep in touch.
      GO Deep!

    Way too many adverts. Thanks for uploading though.

      @lostronin380, we agree! But even a lost ronin Samurai needs a sponsor. Otherwise, they are just “lost!” The stuff on this channel is free. Truth is free. But, a platform for reaching a global audience is not. We don’t like the ads but are grateful for the digital platform RUclips provides to connect us all. We hope you will come back and continue to check out the really good stuff on this channel. GO Deep!

      Well, in order for your viewers to enjoy their mythical journey to the interior you may consider the truth that double adverts every five minutes makes immersion in the content difficult, especially with meditative content such as you are kindly providing. You will be walking a fine line between Channel growth for good ad revenue (which you are welcome to) and turning away subscribers and / or viewers due to excessive interruptions. This is more of a fact than an opinion, especially with this content genre. This wisdom is free also. You're welcome 😉.
      I'll be getting lost now as I've got deep samurai stuff to do. Wherever there is injustice of excessive advert placement on the universe's teachings, I'll be there.
