Amazing system with a love or hate drawback. I got one boxed for $43 only in my dream did I ever think of getting an expensive old console at this stupid low price but dream did come true! Loading time are just about the same as many PS1 games' loading time.
Nice review mate i just did a review of the NeoGeo CDZ myself a few days ago, i like the cd machines even with there loading and you have the bonus of fantastic arranged music.
To anyone watching this, it's worth noting that Humble Bundle just released a bundle of Neo Geo games for PC and Mac, many of which are featured in this video. If you're interested in playing some of these games and don't want to go through the trouble to hunt down a Neo Geo CD or AES, this bundle offers a great alternative. Part of the money also goes to charity, so that's great too. You can find the bundle here for a limited time: www.humblebundle.com/
Nice video. I've ordered a Neo Geo CD for just €34 myself from Japan, but it's broken. It has no video output, but it does work (there is sound and other signs of life), which shouldn't be too hard to fix. I do need a DC adapter, but I've found out there's a line of old HP external CD writers that use the same plug and will work on the NGCD. I'll build my own arcade stick controller and RGB cable, and I should be set! I think the Windjammers load animation isn't a girl throwing a frisbee, she's throwing a CD, a cute little joke on the CD loading time.
The bad thing about playing a Neo Geo CD is the loading time I downloaded Mortal Kombat XL it took 18 hours for the download and that was with 5G Wi-Fi
I wonder if the story ever came out about why SNK opted for such a slow drive initially. You'd think they would have tested it and found those 30-sec load times were unacceptable. I don't even think Mega CD or PCE-CD had those problems, let alone Saturn and PSX a year (or less) later. My guess is they couldn't negotiate a good deal with the manufacturer. Sony had all the perks from day 1 since they were an electronics company.
I think you're right. It was likely an issue of cost versus profit margin when they released the NGCD. Historically, technology costs do go down over time, which is likely the case when the Saturn and PSX were released. Although they were released before, the PCE-CD and Mega CD had the benefit of piggybacking off of the processors of the PC Engine and Mega Drive, respectively.
I have two MVS 4-Slot Cabs, an AES, and Neo Geo CDZ. I like my CD but it is so cheaply made that I have had to get it repaired repeatedly. The loading is terrible but the controllers are excellent. They fit inside my AES and I love them. This is a good video; However, I wish he would warn people just how shoddy the craftsmanship is. If you want to play Neo Geo games buy an AES and get an AES to MVS converter. MVS games are alot cheaper than the AES games, they are plentiful, and it will not fall apart on you. If you get an American AES you can put Japanese games in it and usually it will display text in English. Seriously, go with the AES with a simple converter.

+Charlie Cat Hey, Anthony! I probably won't be making any Neo-Geo videos for a little while. I like to bounce around and cover different things. I have a few episodes about specific games on different platforms planned. I'm thrilled you enjoy the videos though. Thanks so much for watching!

Never even really knew about Neo-Geo until recently and never have found one in the wild. Would love to have one eventually!
+NostalgicRoe I really like it a lot. So many great games.
Still got my CDZ...best purchase (for price/time-wise) I've ever made.

+Daniël's Tech & Music Channel Oh, now that you say that, I see the CD she's throwing. Awesome man. I hope you get it working soon!

Always wanted one of these!
Funny thing - I wanted to original Neo Geo - but I completely forgot about the CD one.
