Probably a good thing you never got one. I remember games being $250AUD retail. An NES game retailed for about $90AUD for a AAA title, with older titles and the non-AAA's going for around $40 - $60AUD. So for the price of ONE NEO GEO game, you could pick up 4 or 5 NES games including some AAA new releases in there. And - $250AUD in 1990 equates to $473.17 in 2016. So it's the equivelent of paying almost $500AUD for one game.

I only knew of one guy. He was my uncles best friend and he worked at a mom and pop video game store at the time. I was about 10 or 12 and was obsessed with fighting games and arcade games. I was heartbroken when he sold his collection to buy an engagement ring for some dumb slut who wound up cheating on him within 5 years anyway. It was completely out of the question for my mom to spend that kind of absurd money on games. I could barely get her to buy snes cartridges.

It turns out it was a married couple who bought the system for their 10 year old son, not realizing that it didn't have the "Mario" games that he wanted to play! If I just wanted to buy the game I would get it on the PS store for like 40x times cheaper. But, for me and most collectors its about having history/unique items that make it desirable. Plus, a lot of these collectors things are only going up on value, so it can be seen as an investment.

I will now undertake the expensive task of replacing the system as I have a large collection of now valuable cartridges for the system. I highly recommend one of these systems if you are a fan of arcade games... very little diversity in way of genres for the system (mainly fighters or shooters) but the quality was extremely high. I just built my self an OMVS, and I love it!! Taitoc labs, and Tian Feng made this and released it open source to the world. Laser bear makes a case to put it all in. All you need is a MV-1C arcade board, and some slight soldering skills to fix the sound and you have a Neo Geo arcade console! Plenty of guides on RUclips showing how to to do this. You can buy the boards pre-made, or if you have the skill and time you can order the boards from OSH park and build them. The pre made boards are really nicely priced and well worth the it. I built my own because I wanted to, it’s just my jam, and very satisfying (so much SMD, mmmm yes please). Honestly, I probably spent just as much on building it than I would’ve getting it pre made. Any way, I love it! I haven’t read the comments, but probably somebody has mentioned this project. I just wanted to give it a bump because these guys made it and released it to the world and that makes them awesome! I can FINALLY get my Neo Geo on!

My NEO-GEO collection is my most prized console collection I have!! I have a full official AES cart collection every AES officially released! (although my carts are a mix of Japanese, US and PAL) I have 39 MVS carts, a full CD games set too, a brand new factory sealed CDZ, a CDZ system I use, a front loader I use and a fully BIOS modded AES system I use, had my NEO collection valued for insurance purposes, £60-70k value! LOVE IT! My full US Metal Slug collection is my pride and joy! The reason why the carts are so big is because each cart was effectively a console its self, the actual home console was just a way of bridging the carts to the TV like an exchanger unit, so the carts are so expensive because your basically buying a "console" every time. Also they cost a fortune for SNK to manufacture, so each cart had an actual production run - SNK would make like 3000 carts and then retire the run so once the game sold out that was it, the only way to get it was on the pre owned market hence why some of the carts are SUPER expensive, the elusive PAL release pf Kizuna Encounter £12,000 it got recalled by SNK so theres only 4 real carts out there, it did reach shelve in Germany and Austria but got quickly pulled, even though the JAP carts ten a penny! And PAL Super Side Kicks 4:U11, which I own :) bought new from Telegames in 1998 is worth a whopping £4-8k. Also my NEOGEOFREAK US side labelled KingOfFighters 2000 cart one of only 100 I think! I bought most of my carts and CDs on release, the most expensive carts was £650 and that was KOF2K way back in 1999 and Samurai Showdown 5 and 5 SPECIAL I payed £500 a piece back in 2003/4 I think it was that being the last official cart SNK released! The NEOGEO AES gone, but never forgotten! :)

I remember reading articles about NeoGeo when it first came out in my monthly subscription to Gamepro magazine back in the early 90s, it was like the Fender Strat from Wayne’s World. Man...my friends and I laughed about it because of the freakin cartridges’ memory size being Soooo much bigger than everything else currently available at the time. Genesis and SNES touted “16Mb huge!” Meanwhile NeoGeo started at like 45Mb with a max of 330, we didn’t even know it went up that high! Considering the cost of memory at that time, it really explains (mostly) the price tag on those carts. My father didn’t even laugh when I showed a magazine ad of NeoGeo to him and jokingly suggested I wanted it for Christmas-he just instantly became visibly annoyed, shook his head and walked away without saying a word. Good stuff.

But alas, I can't afford it so I ended up buying a Neo Geo CD with both the Model 2 Joy sticks (two of them) and two of the regular control pads. Games included were Samurai Spirits, KOF 94, and Quiz Fighter. For an extra 130, I picked up King of Fighter 97, 98, some other random game, and Top Hunter (total 730 CAD)! Going to start collecting more and more. Going to focus on my Vita, Saturn, and NeoGeoCd games once I have the chance.

Are the graphics just as good on the Neo Geo CD? Is the problem really only the load times? For me that is worth it since the AES has always been so expensive, but I'd love to have anything that's as close graphics and game playing wise. The load times are pretty slow on some Saturn games but the performance blows away the same title on Playstation (for some games like the Real Bout series).

My grandmother got me a Neo Geo Gold AES system for my birthday back in either 1990 or 1991(I just remember having it before the Terminator 2 movie came out in theaters). I did not get a game for it as often as I did a Genesis or NES/SNES game as Neo Geo AES games retailed for $299/each. About 3 - 4 years later, I traded it with someone for a Sega Genesis + Sega CD + about 300 games. heh... I will say, I regretted getting rid of the thing. ---- However, many many years later, I picked up another complete, boxed Neo Geo AES Gold system off of eBay. I still have that system to this day and considerably more games than I used to have back in the 90's.
On a side note, John talks about how Neo Geo US & JPN games are interchangeable, but the game(s) will run in whatever their native region is. The US Neo Geo AES Gold system I have now does not have a UNIBIOS installed... yet regardless if I play US or JPN games, the games always play in the US language/region. As for Neo Geo games prices, they were becoming expensive when this video was released in 2016... but today(2022), most US(Dog Tag) games start around $300+ and most of the more desirable titles average around $2,000 - $5,000... even then, there's a lot over $10k. There was even a US Metal Slug 1 that sold not that long ago for nearly $60k !!!

Yes, it may have been the same quality as a real arcade cabinet, but those were NeoGeo cabinets, which had the cheap games that were like 2 games per quarter. Most of it is just marketing BS, but back in the very early days of computing, everything was measured in bits, especially ROM and RAM chips. It's also a race to the bottom. If one ISP does it, then they all have to do it. There's also that magical phrase "up to."
The computer industry has been full of lies (deception, more like). They couldn't even be honest about the size of a monitor! Nearly ALL 14" monitors were about 13", for example.

    • @DefyingZero

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 7 лет назад +3

In the early days, ram was usually 1 bit wide and so you would need 8 or 9 4164 chips to get a single 64kB bank. Each chip was 64kilobits. This was back in the days of the dual inline package or DIPs as they were called. But as to video games, they used to bit so the number would sound big. A 128 kilobyte game sounded MUCH bigger and better as a 1 megabit game. Unfortunately, once one asshole does that, they all start doing it. It's nothing more than marketing bullshit. Which sounds better, having a single dollar, or 100 cents. That is literally what they are doing.

    • @DefyingZero

The founder of SNK Eikichi Kawasaki started a new company called PlayMore in 2001 knowing the end was nigh for SNK Kawasaki San created PlayMore and when the IPs went up for sale in 2003 cleverly Kawasaki San bought them and renamed his new company PlatMore SNK-PlayMore, so from the ashes of the original SNK rose SNK-PlayMore. Kawasaki San managed to keep the HQ, all the bricks and mortar, logos, franchises, pretty much everything! Aruze tried to drag SNK down but like a Phoenix from the ashes, Kawasaki rose SNK-PM back to its rightful place right up there with the very best!

I was hoping somebody had corrected this in the two years since this video came out :)
The same trick is used when ISP advertise their speeds. "200 MEG" etc., meaning 200 Megabits which is like 25 MB.
Incidentally you can usually tell what is being referred to by the notation. "MB" = Megabyte and "Mb" = Megabit. So again ISPs would notate it as "200 Mb/s" in the hope you mistake it as 200 Megabytes per second.

    • @herranton
      @herranton 6 лет назад +4

Your isp isn't trying to trick you. Back way before your time, we measured transfer speed in a measurement called _baud._ My first modem was a 2400 baud modem. When it would connect with my isp it would perform a handshake where it would make a bunch of beeps and buzzes. Basically, they (the modems) were agreeing on what protocols and speed to use when talking to each other. The _baud_ number referred to how many times my modem could switch its state per second. Each time it switched it was pushing one _bit_ through. So my modem could handle 2400 _bits_ per second (and in fact, _baud_ simply means bits per second). The fastest consumer analog modems maxed out at 52,000 baud, which at the time felt like it was blazing fast. Modern modems use bits per second too. We have always used bits per second.
And when modems were first being introduced, no one could have told you that 8 bits making a byte would be a thing. In fact, if the Chinese had designed everything there would probably be 16 or 32 bits in a byte because it makes more sense with respect to simplified Chinese. There are eight bits in a byte because that is just about the variation you need to use all the English characters and punctuation. If you simplify it down, you could use a 6 bit per byte system, and in fact many early systems did.

The beeps and buzzes were not from the modem, but from the computer internal speaker. It was a feature to let you know you were going online. It was important to know back in the day when people used to pay for internet access by the minute. The feature could be disabled in the modem settings. Most people didn’t know and just learned to live with the annoying screeching sounds...

Of course now we have some nice options, such as the Framemeister, OSSC, to display RGB through a SCART connector and display out as HDMI HD. Or use an HD Retrovision component (YPbPr) cable to tap into the RGB signal and output onto a CRT or HDTV with component inputs.

I've looked online at Neogeo's and still do every now and then, when I'm in the mood (like a minute ago, after watching this video) but they're out of my price range.
As far great collections go, I really, really like the Real Bout collection on PS4. That is, Fatal Fury Battle Archives vol. 2, which is actually a PS2 collection available as a sort of backwards compatible download game on PS4, online via PSN. What I love about it though, is that you can play perfect, (almost) zero load time ports with the CD music. So it's basically combining the AES and Neo geo CD versions of the real bout games. In my humble opinion this makes the versions on this collection essentially the best versions of the Real Bout game there are. As far as I know at least. Even the Sega Saturn versions, which use the 1 meg ram cart and have the CD music, still have some load times making even those slightly inferior. They might also lack some frames of animation but I'm not sure about that; I know that the Saturn SamSho versions do lack some animations.
Even so, the dream of one day getting an actual Neo Geo hasn't died yet.

It's documented also that Sony didn't make a profit on the PS3 til they dropped the price. We had the Neo Geo arcade at one of our local restaurants in Louisiana and I loved playin it but unless your family had a ton of disposable income back then no way a kid could talk his parent's into getting the home console for them back then.

Really cool. I just bought a working MVS cabinet with about 50 carts from a local store that just closed. I paid $130 for everything and was looking to see what I'd gotten myself into.

I had to replace the monitor and most of the control switches. I also replaced the plexi glass on the marquee and control surface repainted and printed new decals. I sold my US Last Blade 2 AES cart to pay for the project since I have an MVS version, and my wife wouldn't let me spend extra money to work on it.

Neo Geo home market shit is garbage imho, just get a real mvs cabinet and you win for 1% of the cost. Even with the multicarts.

MVS and AES cartridges are electrically compatible, just the physical interface of the cartridges of an MVS doesn't fit an AES. Easily fixed with a simple straight-through adapter.

that samurai Shodown had me savagely ploting back then. would go insane trying to find a way to aquire $900 for the system and cartridge .
unfortunately after boosting now&laters from the corner store and selling them in school for three months never lead to me getting the system.
I eventually started using the product I was boosting and wasting part of the profits while slumbing at the arcades dropping quarters on shinobi and Street fighter 2. arcade

My brother is a diehard Neo Geo fan--I am not-- but I soooo regret
not collecting the Neo Geo games and systems during the early years, and I'll
explain to you why. First off, Neo Geo WAS NEVER CHEAP. Even during its first release
and during the 2008 recession, when collectors were trying to scrounge for cash
anyway possible, Neo Geo was very expensive! Neo Geo was always seen as a
premium home replacement alternative to arcade systems--and rightfully so as
the game quality is top-notch and similar to an arcade experience. I regret not
collecting for the Neo Geo because today all its games nearly quadrupled in value--and
its homebrew games SELL for thousands of dollars! If you Ebay most games, and
check the SALES HISTORY, Neo Geo stuff is hitting some incredible sales prices!
Keep in mind, some Neo Geo games sell for thousands of dollars and are being
sold for thousands of dollars--no if ands or buts. So MY SMART BROTHER WHO BOUGHT GAMES WHEN THEY
WERE CHEAP NEARLY BECAME A DONALD TRUMP OVERNIGHT. Lucky him! He was smart and
invested in a very desirable game console!

"Neo Geo was always seen as a
premium home replacement alternative to arcade systems--and rightfully so as
the game quality is top-notch and similar to an arcade experience."
Seen by whom? It is consolized arcade hardware so much for the premium marketing gibberish. The games are pretty good but for the most part nothing to call home about as far as I can tell.
The problem is the fanboys of yesteryears are the inflators of nowadays.
      "He was smart and
invested in a very desirable game console!"
Are you sure everything was planed?

Just go the CMVS route and buy only games you really enjoy. It costs still a few hundred bugs but at least the games are relatively cheap.

Both the MVS and AES Neo-Geo systems were released in 1990. This was in both Japan and the USA.

    • @videogameobsession
      @videogameobsession 5 лет назад

Nexus of Ice That's incorrect. They were sold in time for the holiday season 1990 in the U.S.. I bought a USA Gold System for $550 from a U.S. based video game company who advertised in Electronic Gaming Monthly. My dad also bought me Top Player's Golf ($170) for my big XMAS gift that year. The company even included a free $30 memory card.

You're not alone. Many people think that. Despite trying to fix this in Wikipedia, they keep changing it back. I'm guessing very few people owned a USA Neo•Geo Gold System (2 controllers + either Baseball Stars Pro or NAM-1975).
I do have proof as well.
My receipt for the system. Purchased on 12/18/1990

Nexus of Ice I helped out with a book called Neo•Geo A Visual History, and they got the dates right in their. It's also the only book of its kind fully authorized by SNK. I highly recommend that book BTW. It has a ton of amazing photos which were scanned from SNK which have never seen the light of day until now.

    • @videogameobsession

      Nexus of Ice
Many people think it was released here in 1991 because that's when SNK was finally able to break into the brick & mortar retail side. It was Fall of 1991 when both Babbage's and Electronics's Boutique added the system and a handful of games into their Holiday catalogs and stores. The Gold system price jumped up from $550 to $650 and the games went from various prices, which were dynamically priced based on the ROM size (from $129 to $170) to a flat $199.99 on all games despite the ROM size.
It's too bad, because I think they would have done much better with the $500 system price and with some games as "low" as $129. League Bowling was one such game which was $129. Still one of my faves too.

Glad I was alive and had the pleasure to experience one near the release. The high price was the price you paid for arcade perfection. God this console kicked every console out of the water, it's just a shame it was for rich folks that could easily fork out 150+ each game.

Old video I know, but to chime in I purchased a Neo Geo at Babbages shortly after release with Magician Lord and Ninja Combat....for $199 a game. I beat Ninja combat an hour after purchase. Bummer. But what was cool was that I was able to get as far as I could with Magician Lord at home, save it to the card, and then go to my local arcade (Fun N' Games in NJ) and continue where I left off. Save it after passing some hard level and bring it home and continue. This was necessary because the "home" version of the game used to either start you from the beginning of the level or the middle when you died (as far as I recall) which made it really difficult to beat the level. But in the arcade, you simply pop in a quarter and keep continuing exactly where you were.
SNK got my money on the console, game, and card...and then my quarters on top of that!
