  • Taking to the skies today in Just Flight's Arrow III, I thought I'd talk about an idea I have for aircraft reviews in the future. Let me know what you think.

    Pete, It is lovely to see you back and up front again. I love the idea of the first impressions followed up with a 10 hour review. I like this mainly because it is so easy to just love an aircraft at first impression and then find things you don't like afterwards. Well done Sir. Tony

    First impressions and then the ten hour full review seems a good idea.

    Sounds like a great plan. 10 hours or a certain number of complete flights. Maybe setting up a few set flights where you fly in different scenarios to test what the aircraft can do and how well it simulates it. Like 0 visibility, stormy weather, bush flight, icy conditions, etc.. obviously if the aircraft is capable of it.

    Very reasonable idea - watching „First Impression Videos“ is usually a waste of time

    10 hour reviews are a great idea. At the moment there is a tremendous rush when a product hits the the market to be the first to publish a review. For me, that's not always fair on developers as many of their features take a while to fully experience and a quick look at a product doesn't always reflect the depth of the add on. Spending time to fully validate your opinions is a great idea. It's also worth noting that quite a few devs release updates or patches a few days after the initial release which kind of makes the very, very early reviews a bit less accurate.

    Hi Froogle. I think the 10 hour idea is great for the more detailed and involved aircraft. I’m not so sure that GA aircraft really need 10 hours acclimatising with them is necessary - perhaps a shorter time say 2 - 5 hours acclimatising after all GA aircraft are nowhere near as complex as the airliners. Having said that the TBM’s probably do need a longer time. I really love the Just Flight Arrows. Steve.

    10 hour reviews of course are a good idea, just as long as you don't get side tracked with another add on, plane or IRL, as the review will never get done lol 😁

    Hey Froggle! When I first saw the title with the question mark, I thought you were going to complain about all the other reviews that seem to go on and on so that it seems to be a 10-hour flight. I'm not much for the really long reviews where the person does a review while flying from New York to Tokyo in a single engine piston. I just don't have that kind of time. However, your concept makes a lot of sense, especially when so many people put reviews out there as soon as a new plane is released (e.g. Flying Iron Spitfire) and the review consists mostly of them trying to find out where everything is and how to fly the plane. Not very professional in my opinion, and a waste of my time.
    On the other hand, I have always highly valued your opinion and your reviews so anything that makes them more relevant and accurate as well as coming from an expert is welcome in my book! Do it sir!

      one thing that i really Hate , is when simmers call themselves virtual pilots , and all they do is sit around watching you tube while an auto pilot flys a plane on vatsim across the Atlantic , there are even mods to make alarms when the AFK mode is triggered on vat sim now so that people can sleep and pretend to crack on those all important virtual pilot hours ,
      i would use VATSIM , IF , they knew what the hell they were talking about , its terrible for the British Civil Aviation as no one seems to have ever read the Radio Telephoney manual, and when you follow it they have no clue , after all why should i get banned for using a call sign of G-SPOT , ????

    When flying small GA don't worry too much about the papis. More of a distraction if anything. Definitely don't want to be low but nothing wrong with being high and coming in steep. It's how I fly real aircraft all the time. I'd rather have the altitude in the event of an engine failure. If you lose an engine in a single engine aircraft on a 3 degree glide slope you will never make it to the runway. The 3 degree glide slope is really for faster multi-engine aircraft that are flying instrument approaches. When I land real aircraft I focus on my touchdown point and nothing else. Keep the velocity vector where you want it and you'll fly a great approach every time.

    Froogle, 1 or 10 or 100 hours are fine so long as your review acknowledges from where it comes &, more importantly, that its scope reflects that time-on-type plus the profile(s) employed, e.g. ground handling (i.e. hard/soft surface, rough, long wet grass etc), air manoeuvres (i.e. straight & level versus unusual attitudes), recovery handling (e.g. stall, spin), engine management, cockpit management, weather, weight and balance, etc. I suppose the key is to differentiate between that which is particular to the aircraft model rather the sim (just the one sim or multiple?). Of course, stick to what you know as a simmer versus a pilot. Best regards and thanks for your channel.

    Good idea. After a few reviews you may be able to refine the time needed (and different plane types may need different timings, a Piper cub is a bit different to a 747 so would need less time perhaps) but good to make sure you're spending enough time with them.
    By the way, are you using a wide monitor, if so which type are you using?

  • @rayjennings3637
    @rayjennings3637 3 года назад

    Sounds good to me. Like Dennis Knepper, I get annoyed at a 'review' which consists of someone just figuring out where things are and not actually knowing anything about the flight performance but can and sometimes do, just gush about the textures. Texture is important of course but since we spend 90% of our time behind the yoke or stick so long as ti's decent externally then so be it! I too love the Arrow III, R & T versions.
    Will you ever get back to writing articles for PC Pilot again?

  • @smax3117

    Great idea! I am about to complete a flight in the FlyingIron Spitfire from Headcorn Kent UK to Brasilia. 50 legs nearly 50 hours. Real time, real weather (Such as you get in MSFS!!). No review after a couple of flights can really tell you what that aircraft is like. So yes, 10 hour reviews flying in different parts of the world and different conditions would be awesome and give a much better idea of what is worth spending your money on.

    I totally prefer having reviews that are after actually using it for 10 hours. I just use first looks for figuring out whether it has some features I like but if I'm really serious about it it's just not enough to justify spending money. I want someone that really tells me how his impression was, whether it's in depth, whether it has bugs or some really annoying "features" and what else I need to be aware about/ So I think it's a great idea

    I get disappointed with a review that has the reviewer getting acquainted with the aircraft - we can do that. What we want to know is "Should we buy it?". On the other hand 10 hours is okay in my view if that 10 hours is done reasonably quickly because people like myself would be anxious to get the aircraft (or scenery etcetera), especially if we have been waiting for a long time for it to appear (the DC3 for me). So yes, I agree with your reasoning and I have appreciated your posts for a long time (You were missed there for awhile and I'm glad to see you back, mate). You call the shots and I trust what you tell us.

    i think it would be interesting for you to record , but not publish a first impressions video , then do your 10 hour video and see then you can splice in where your first impressions and 10 hours in video disagree with each other , would be interesting to see how views change over getting to grips with the aircraft , even if you only record your first impressions as audio notes

    • @frooglesim
      @frooglesim  3 года назад

      That's not a bad idea. I will publish the first impressions though, but I like the idea of splicing in the first impressions where appropriate
