Ramadan (Ramazan) - Ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It is considered a holy month, during which muslims fast from early morning (Suhur) until the evening (Iftar) in order to emphatize with starving and needy people.
Eid ul-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı) - A three-day religious holiday at the end of Ramadan.
Blessing (Nimet) - Muslims consider all food (with the exception of forbidden food like pork meat) a blessing from Allah. When talking about food in religious contexts, it is common to use the word Nimet, the word for blessing in Turkish.
Namaz/Five Daily Prayers - Namaz is one of the five pillars of Islam, a kind of worship which is the duty of all Muslims to perform five certain times a day. It can either be performed in private, or in mosques with others.
Suhur (Sahur) - Every day during Ramadan, muslims wake up early in the morning, before the dawn, to have a meal before the fasting period begins, in order to prepare themselves for a day without any food or drink. This time is called Suhur (or Sahur in Turkish).
Adhan/Call to Prayer (Ezan) - A call to worship recited five times a day from the mosque minarets. It informs all muslims that the time for prayer has come, and summons them to perform the Namaz.
Sıla-i Rahim - An islamic tradition which dictates that muslims should keep in touch with their relatives and friends; they should visit them and communicate with them, forgive resentments against them and have mutual love and respect.
