A crossroads between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has always been a city full of contradictions. But as the economic hothouse booms, and a new, Islamic middle-class emerges, mini-skirts and mosques collide.
Ayse runs a cafe in the upper class Bebek district, an area of clubs and couture. She describes her wealthy lifestyle as 'cosmopolitan', comparing her city to New York. Her chef, Rafet, sees Istanbul very differently: "I have nothing at all in common with these people. My life and theirs are poles apart". On the other side of town, religious Anatolians like Rafet live far more modestly. Divided along both economic and religious lines, the more secular elites and the emerging Islamic middle class may be living side by side, but the gulf between them is huge.

@@oguzb.7033 while I somewhat agree with your statement, you completely missed the point of my comment. I wasn't making fun of his German, as there is nothing to make fun of, he is very obviously a native speaker (or came to Germany/Austria) as a child and is as fluent as I am. I had to chuckle because the combination of "typical Turk" and him starting to speak in German was funny to me.
And contrary to your statement (which might hold true in general), I hold people ,who have the courage to speak in a language they aren't fluent in, in very high regards and would never mock someone based on that.

the woman speaking around 4:50 says that she reads the quran in old turkish and prays in old turkish. I don't really know what she means by that but she definitely doesn't say "arabic".
"islamic country" is an incorrect phrase to use as well; especially for turkey. it's a muslim dominated state but a secular republic.
on the other hand what is "living islamic" and "living by lay traditions" to you? they sound very much like made-up and superficial terms. some practise quran some not. some practise this way some another.
you also used the term anatolia and istanbul so often as they were of 2 different regions. however, istanbul's eastern side lies on the anatolian peninsula too which is just a geographical term while istanbul is a city.
lastly, the kemalist criteria for national identity is simply being a turkish citizen and sharing the same language, and/or sharing values, a common history, and the will to share a future. those who protect and promote the moral, spiritual, cultural and humanistic values of the turkish nation are nationalists.

Thank you for sharing this. For me the earth in Istanbul is made of gold but of course Istanbul is a city of 16 or what millions where so many interests collide and so of course there's gonna be divide. These kinds of divides and segregation are the ugly flip of the coin in today's world cities. Istanbul for me is the greatest city on earth because I'm very personally attached to the city and I dare say that the old parts of town are objectively stunning but in reality it has actually so much wasted potential. Economic growth could be used to really transform it into the greatest city on earth. A public transport system that can actually handle that amount of people, creation of green spaces, road pricing, preparing the city for the big earthquake that will inevitably strike, QUALITY education for everyone (in Turkey) and what not. Instead we see gentrification on every street corner and even whole neighbourhoods like Tarlabaşı destroyed. And the fact that the majority poor AKP voters actually cheer that on is beyond me!! Of course I'm aware that many of these problems existed long before AKP rule but man they've been fueling it! Also I do acknowledge positive developments like the expansion of the metro system and the network slowly starting to be connective but why build even more roads then? It just means more cars! Anyways I'm off topic now and could go on forever. Anyways, love my Istanbul. PEACE!

It's just due to the fact that people are ignorant, pro-neoliberalism (knowing or not knowingly) and are against social policies that can eliminate disparity in a society. @@techstepman Haha let me tell you some facts so you might not take a disastrous decision of moving to a third world country lol. The broad categories pertaining to a person's wealth are poor, lower middle class, middle class, upper middle class, rich and ultra rich. I am from Pakistan, a poor country from the third world. Here a small family with two kids need at least $10k per month to be classified rich. I don't think a horribly poor person or even couple earn $10k a month in America and I have seen most people earning between $800 to probably $2000 a month. With that kind of amount you won't be in poor category in Pakistan but lower middle to middle class.

    • @techstepman
      @techstepman 5 лет назад +1

@@MohiHash ...i live in a second world country...i dont intend to move anywhere, why did you assume that? In africa there are countries that you can get by for a month or more with 1 dollar, those are true third world countries...pakistan has nukes...and its a "third" world country cause of politics/religion (i understand that in pakistan most of the time those 2 are the same thing) and the amount they invest in weapons. Strong country= poor ppl. My country only has one tiny nuke reactor and thats just for research in a university...pakistan is not a poor country...not by a long shot.
You assumed you were talking to a stupid person...and made many wrong statements. Think again pakistans situation. I'd say pakistan is considered a third world country cause of the sociopolitical situation...which affects its economy. You got the resources to be a first world country. Now compare pakistan with an african country...one that has little drinking water with diseases everywhere and tribal warfare... where you can live really well with 50 dollars per month provided you can keep yourself away from predatory animals and bullets...50 dollars is about the amount of money a homeless beggar can make in one day in new york...which they usually spend on alcohol and drugs...if they saved up they could get out of the streets...

Turkey is seeking to adapt modern western values in order to build wealth. Western wealth was not built with modern values, it was built in the past, when the west eschewed Christian values. You need only look at modern Israel, or pre-60's America to see how fast Judeo-Christian values build weath. In terms of wealth, Israel is what it is after 60 years, and America rose from the dust in where it was post WW2, in only 190 years. In terms of debt to asset ratios, America has never been wealthier than it was in the 50's, when it singularly paid for the re-construction of Western Europe and Japan. Aside from America itself, these are still the world's wealthiest regions.
However, Christianity does not inherently assert itself, and secularization happened. America and Western Europe have been getting steadily poorer since the 60's, and it's because westerners no longer adhere to the values that made them wealthy.
Unlike Christianity, Islam does inherently assert itself. It's not going anywhere. But, unlike Christianity, Islam is not conducive to building wealth. Historically and today, Islamic nations are and have only been wealthy when sitting on surplus natural resources or conquering other nations. Arabs are wealthy because of Oil, and the ottomans were wealthy because of Jihad. If Turkey becomes modern (i.e. Liberal) it will not find itself wealthy. It will find itself going in the same direction of Europe and the United States over the past 57 years. And yet, if Turkey reaffirms Islam...Welp.

Can i ask something, what percentage of Turkish population is actually "white" ? I have watched a lot of Tdramas and it feels like more than 80 % of cast appears to be white. But i have read on several websites that tdramas often try to portray Turkish society as an modern European like, but in reality most of the country is actually very conservative Islamic kind of. They also try to portray Turkish people as white while majority of Turkish are brown skinned like Arab or Indian. Some say original turks were mongoloid looking people while some say they are Arab looking. Now i do know that Turkish people are multiethnic and a mixture of various races and cultures pretty much like most of world. Turkish people have wide genetics like Arab, central Asian, southern asian, east European.
Its interesting to see the little girl in the beginning of the video who had blonde hair because we thought blond hair only appear among northern and western Europeans. It's unlikely that a little girl will dye her hair so how common is blond hair in Turkey ?

On the other hand, the working class Turks are mostly of Asian origin which means they descent of Central Asians, where the original Turks came from, or Middle East like Kurdistan.
The question here is how long will this precarious balance last, it seems the failed coup in '16 was the last attempt of the mostly white/secular Turks to cling to power, but Erdogan won and purged nearly half of the top officers in the Military.
I suspect that Turkey will become something like the emirate States in the Middle East: somehow very modern economically but still very Muslim in it's essence. It will be interesting to follow.
But I cannot stop finding fascinating the fact that White Turks seem to have more in common with Europeans or Americans than with their own non-White countrymen who were raised in the same city.
So, I wanna ask the Turkish people, is there a racial problem in Turkey?? Is people in general aware that there is a racial issue or mostly they disagree? Do white Turks avoid mixing with Asian Turks?? Do people speak about "Racism" as such or they just mention "social difference"??

There's no racism in Turkey, maybe only against Kurds but that's another story...We never really looked like our cousins in Asia, we always had that Caucasian look so most of the Turks that migrated were already somewhat white...ln fact we didn't mix with the local population because it was against Turkish customs to marry a foreigner...But after the fall of Ottoman Empire many Turks and the ones who were loyal to Turks had to migrate to todays Turkey, we had millions of Turks coming back from Balkans and those people had blue eyes, white skin and blond hairs on top of that millions of people from Caucasia region also migrated to Turkey, we had both Turkish ethnic groups in them and also some foreigners who were loyal to us and they had for example white skin and red hairs :D after the second world war we had another refugee wave but this time it was from Crimea, back in the day it was controlled by Tatars and they were close cousins to Turks we basically spoke the same language and had similiar cultures but after WW2 Russians invaded that place and massacred so many of them, afterwards nearly 1,5 million of them migrated to Turkey and others went to Central Asia...Tatars married local population which is you know Russians, Ukranians and other caucasian groups and therefore had also European looks in them...he ones who look darker are for example Kurds, they originally come from lran but even Kurds differ in look.
oh and the last coup attempt was done by an lslamic cleric so it had nothing to do with White Turks as you call it.
the Secular Turks were mostly migrant who suffered and saw the decline of the empire so they didn't want that to happen again so they started to educate themselves, go to Universities and eventually became more powerfull...the ones who lived Anatolia were mostly conservative and poor, they were farmers they never really educated themselves that's why they never come to power but again that was because the Ottomans never took care of them.

Thanks for the info, it's interesting. I once read that as much as one third of the Turkish population are actually descendants of Muslim refugees from the Balkans.
It will be interesting to follow how the events unfold in Turkey in the near future since all this forces are still struggling without finding a middle ground.

True, but in the meantime it's the same country where you can get beaten up because you could either be smoking or eating during ramadan in public, beaters wouldn't be presecuted. A man can kick a woman because the fact that she's wearing shorts is wrong in Islamic law, and get away with it.
Millions of children are sent to religious schools from elementary to university, raised by religious laws and education. Can you guarantee such educational system won't get corrupted meanwhile it's not even uncommon to hear kids regardless of their gender are getting abused at religious institutes that provide accommodation or education to them?
You live in a country that trains militants of tens of thousands and then deploy them to war zone, who we realise are the people that scream the divinity of their deity very frequently.
I respect your religious views, it's not up to me to comment on them. While it is true the number of irreligious people are increasing, if you can't see how obviously religious this regime is getting, i would say you are looking at the wrong facts. Consider that our last and the most interesting coup attempt, where people went on "democracy watches", which in the end turned out to be in sake of counting invalid votes without signets legit, and how people were commenting "we protected our religion that night" is an obvious sign how a good majority of the population is just religiously being taken advantage of for the justification of a shit ton of corruption and treason.
