I am half German from my mother's side. I grew up in Istanbul in the 80s and 90s and my parents still live there. When I left high school I went to Vienna, a city that is routinely selected into the three most liveable city worldwide. There were and are issues with Istanbul for the ordinary citizen, but over the 24 years I have been away, there has been constant and massive development of infrastructure and building quality. Obviously one needs money to enjoy Istanbul, because life for the ordinary man with an ordinary salary is a horror. That's not new. It was bad, now it's a horror. In any case, I miss the good things of Istabul, the food, the Bosphorus, the familiarity, the colors of the environment... Despite all now, at 43, despite an horribly failed professional life, I seriously consider whether I made a mistake not coming back 10 or 15 years ago.

This series is a great idea, and I especially appreciate that you point out "living like a king" isn't about gaudiness, showing off excessive wealth, or being the loudest or most annoying person in the room. Your representation of both Istanbul and Bogata will prove to be advantageous to both cities, I think, as well as to those seeking out the places where they will be treated best. Well done.

We stayed in the old city about 2 blocks from the Hagia Sophia and it was one of the best experiences that I've ever had. As an Australian staying in a Muslim country (that we tried to invade) we were a bit apprehensible at first, but the locals loved us. Such wonderful people who gave us lifelong memories of which we are forever grateful for the hospitality that they offered us. I can't wait to get back there for ANZAC Day in the next few years with the wife and kids when they get a bit older. We originally stayed for 9 days but I'll make sure we stay longer next time. I was in Istanbul a couple years ago, investigating the city and Turkey in general. My main impression was: the city was hugely underappreciated, it was huge, it had an abundance of goods and services (some people praised the local healthcare for being decent and affordable, among things that I experienced for myself), it still had great potential, it was rather safe, it was international, yet real estate there was more than affordable.
Since then, they had a surge of inflation, and their currency depreciated quite a bit. Yet, I still hold to my view: it was way underappreciated back then, and it still is now. On a whole range of parameters, Turkey is doing so much better than many, many other countries with more expensive real estate and more stable currencies.
If its government doesn't run the country into the ground, I believe it has potential to really shine in the future. And, yes, it is a bit of a consumer heaven.

    Andrew,
I grew up in Istanbul and live in Italy now. You captured the spirit of Istanbul and the Turkish people perfectly, exactly as I see it. Thank you for the care you’ve put into this and it brings me a lot of joy to see folks from western countries seeing value in the less rule based and service oriented culture and the way of life that comes with it.
I do think globally Istanbul is one of the best cities for living in, especially if you have the funds since there is literally no end to luxury there.
It was also delightful to see so many of my favorite spots you ended up visiting.
For everyone watching, everything you’re seeing in the video is maybe 5% of what Istanbul has to offer, it is incredibly big and dense.
If we compared to new york, think of him having visited Soho & LES or something. There’s so much more!
If you want to live like a king, Istanbul is truly the place to be. Coming from a well traveled freelancer. I left thinking there was better spots, but I’m finding out there may not be :)

I moved from Mexico to Istanbul turkey the summer of 2022 for 3 months to escape the Mexico heat. I loved living there.
I am a solo traveling Black female, and I traversed both sides, European and Asian, and I was very safe and felt very welcome.
If you are considering Istanbul, GO!
The only problem are the visas. They keep not renewing visas of those that moved there within the past 2 years. It’s very problematic.
They did just introduce a digital nomad visa, but they could change that at any moment.
Lastly, it is very difficult and expensive to secure short term housing in a Digital nomad situation, so be aware of that.
I also want to say that Turkey has been dealing with CRIPPLING inflation and the devaluation of the Turkish lira.
This has caused an increase in the anti-expat sentiment because the increasing prices are being blamed on the influx of foreigners vs the government, which is really behind it.
Please do not go there and gloat about how far your dollars go. Please have empathy for the Turkish people because they are truly suffering.

I mean, it is as strange as the prejudices of people in Turkey who think that we are transported by camels. It is the human being himself who does evil, it has nothing to do with any religion, especially Islam. The cities you feel safe in are not safe just because they are inhabited by Christians or people of a religion other than Islam. Understand this and research more. Culture and religion are different things.

For 5-digit semi-nomadic entrepeneurs like myself:
    - 183 days in Georgia if you can qualify for a 1% tax on your business type.
    - 182 days in Turkey
Alternatively, do Bulgaria with a de facto inverse progressive total tax rate: 7.5% if you make 1 million USD, but more like 15% if you make 60k USD. If you make 40k USD or less, you should not be going to Georgia nor Bulgaria. In that case, Turkey 365 days a year may be better for you.

My plan was to pick a tax free or low tax country to retire to. The problem is that most countries would tax your pension income, your investment income and interest on foreign bank accounts. I am only talking about £20k max PA. Turkey seems high tax when you convert to Lira whereas Georgia is tax free, yet the quality of the country is poor as is housing

Getting my first small taste of Istanbul when I fly through there with Turkish Airlines. They have a program where if you have a long layover of 20 hours or more the airline will give you a choice of a free night's stay at a 4 star hotel or a free tour around the city with lunch. I opted for the hotel but I'm sure I'll see some stuff in tge surrounding area of the hotel and get a proper introduction to the city and country. And then I'll return for a proper long visit.

I would choose Antalya for combination of quiet and inexpensive life, ancient historical places around, abundance of high-quality restaurants, healthcare, security and a big city entertainment, if in the mood for it. Clear Mediterranean beaches and mountain skiing resorts in just 40 minutes' drive - all around. Add to that close and easy access to European capitals and Istanbul. A hidden gem, no less. It's inexpensive now but will appreciate greatly over time.

Istanbul is arguably the greatest city on the planet. Amazing food, welcoming people, charm, culture etc etc etc. However, the time to invest in property or move to Istanbul has passed. The property costs are way too high for what you get, especially in the districts and neighborhoods where most expats would want to live. Additionally, the visa process is not the most efficient or easy for some. It has gotten a lot worse over the years. This video is great for people who want to spend a limited amount of time in Istanbul each year but not live here full-time.

The point you made about Dubai is SO important. Dubai technically can offer a lot of the liberalism mixed with authentic culture experience however it is cursed by geography. It's in a VERY unstable neighborhood and it's weather in general is pretty harsh for international people (though that isn't a huge deterrent for a lot of ppl tbh). The REAL issue is that Dubai (UAE) is surrounded by unstable nations, war and/or just nations that are wildcards in general. Turkey's neighborhood is mostly peaceful (at least the western and northern regions are definetly safe). It is approximate to the rest of Europe and other regions that are rather desirable and places you'd want to visit or even temporarily live in etc.. It's just perfectly placed and has that EXACT balance of authenticism, eastern culture and western elements.

Turkey is surrounded by unstable neighbors ,,, Poland is surrounded by unstable neighbor , by contrast Dubai is far from unstable neighbors , the only issue in Dubai is the weather particularly dust storms ( hopefully this can be stopped by targeting the source of the dust storms ) which comes from Iraq , Syria and the empty desert in Arabia , china managed to stop sand storms in large degree so its possible .

Some nice spots to visit; Izmir, Urla, Çeşme, Datça, Bodrum etc. I am Aegean, born and raised in Izmir, then I lived in multiple European countries but was never satisfied so I returned back to Izmir. Çeşme is a coastal town near Izmir and it's a paradise for people who work remotely. You have multiple crystal clear beaches on both sides of the peninsula, depending on the wind you can choose either flat water or waves. I can go for a swim session between my meetings. We also have some of the nicest windsurf spots here. There is no loss of time, no traffic, you can reach any cafe, shop etc within 15 mins max. Let me know if you are around.

As the title says this is the luxury living style in Istanbul which majority of Turkish people are NOT living like this. The locals are suffering from many economic downsides like high inflation and high interest rates. the minimum wadges can not buy you a house or a car maybe in 100's years.
The changing in laws and regulations also towards the Foreigners Residency Permits makes you near impossible to get a RP right now. Turkish citizenship by investment in real estate now is 400k $ which give many other alternatives elsewhere around the world. My advise to any foreigner is to consider traveling there for short term touristic reasons, and most importantly has to be careful from getting scammed in prices and dont get into arguments between locals as it might be not end well.

There is a rapid urban renewal program happening in Istanbul to replace buildings with earthquake proof buildings. The only problem with this outside of dangerous demolition practices and no concept of environmental mitigation, is the lack of compliance with building codes. Many of the new buildings won’t be up to code and will collapse. You only need to watch Turkish TV for 5 minutes to see the constant news stories of new and old buildings collapsing and developers being frog marched off by the police to face the consequences of their dodgy practices.
Most probably the biggest issue in Türkiye is the lack of compliance to any law and the lack of enforcement of the laws

So I spent a year in Bulgaria. Tax rate landed at about 15%, which was twice the rate I was initially promised.
Not a big deal, but I don't know a single good company there for excellent tax advice and service.
So, I left. Now, in Georgia, I am super-happy with the assistance I'm getting.
    And I've secured 1%, so that's a 15 times upgrade over Bulgaria.
Bulgaria is nice for cheap beach vacations, but the main reason to live in the capital of Sofia
would be if you happen to have a good job there.
Georgia beats Bulgaria in digitalization, ease of doing business, and things like that.
Bulgaria's bureaucracy felt really opaque. I was outsourcing everything and had no idea how to do things myself.
They did not teach me how to be self-sufficient, and they were expensive.
Legal advice in Georgia is costing me about 1/3 of what I was paying in Bulgaria.
Nothing was truly bad in Bulgaria, and it's got some advantages, like the German Kaufland is a better hypermarked than Carrefour in some respects.
I have nothing against Bulgaria and I would go again. But after moving to Georgia, I don't have any urgent reason to go there again.
Istanbul is probably 10x better than Sofia, and I look forward to confirming so myself.

We have been planning our move to Türkiye since last October and have watched countless videos of Türkiye. This is the best and most inspiring video of Istanbul that we have seen. Now…if we can just sell our house in the U.S. we’ll be set.

If you are planning to take citizenship then it’s ok but if you are planning to sell your house and buy one here to take residency, then let me warn you that it’s getting increasingly difficult for people to renew their residency. They don’t want foreigners anymore, so they have made things very difficult for residency. And in the last 5 years , the racism against foreigners has grown big time in the last one year particularly. So many of us left our countries to start a new life here, but with the way things have been going, many have gone back or moved to other countries. Just sharing my experience . Do your research and then decide.

As a Turk, let me explain the real reason for this. According to the constitution, there cannot be more than 10% foreign population in any district. If it exceeds 10%, residence applications are suspended. I recommend that you apply for residence by doing appropriate research on the internet, then you will not have any problems. We are a tourism country. We don't just want foreigners coming illegally. There are 5 million registered and 10 million illegal refugees in the country.
