Hi, I am from the U.S. and recently joined the group so thank you! I have been waiting until I could retire, so now, I am starting my first Camino on August 27th from SJPdP. I've given myself some extra days to keep going to Finisterre once I reach Santiago. I'm using the time I have over the summer here on the East coast to train in the heat and to pare down my backpack to the lightest weight possible. Hope to see you on the Way! Buen Camino

I wasn’t going to say this, because it is personal, but the Camino de Santiago has changed my life without me even going yet. While I was preparing, I decided to get a total health checkup with lots of appointments to lots of different specialists. We discovered a small growth that was just about to become life-threatening. So, St. James has become my patron Saint, because while I was getting ready to go on pilgrimage to his shrine, I caught cancer before it would have become disfiguring or life-threatening. I also hurt myself, so my trip was delayed, but that’s a different story. Haha.

@@caminotellers I feel great. I’m a bit out of shape since I was down for so long, but catching a life-threatening illness just before it “hatches” is pretty miraculous. It’s been a beautiful thing to prepare for this journey. I’m happy to have been thorough in my preparations, and I am grateful to have you for my guide. I wouldn’t feel at all sure about going through with the Camino without you opening the Way for me and others like me. Perhaps you are also to thank for preserving my quality of life. @@stephaniejames6672My wife and I of 53 years are doing the Camino coastal Portuguese route on e bikes. My concession to having my stomach removed from cancer 3 years ago. I was 210 lbs and ended up at 135 lbs. I am now at 160 lbs.
My daughter and I walked the Camino in June 2024 (Porto to Santiago, Coastal route). I thought I would add an additional consideration. This walk is a spiritual walk for a lot of people, it's deeply connected to their faith. Everyone walks for different reasons. If you are not a religious person, please be considerate to those that are. Along the way we met some unfortunate people that made it their Camino mission to argue with other pilgrims about the insignificance of religion.

@@caminotellers we are pretty much packed we have 3 weeks in the UK and 12 days travelling through France to st jean pied de port. We only have our backpacks for 5 months away so all our pictures will have us wearing the same clothes. Wash and wear, wash and wear.
I'm from Canada and I'll be doing the Camino Portuguese coastal route and spiritual variant, beginning May 3rd or 4th. I've heard what you suggest, Ricky and Erica, about starting in the middle of the month and I wish I could. But these are the dates that work for me and I'm super thankful that I get to have this wonderful adventure. Only three months to go!

Galicia is chilly and humid but not arctic cold. Think about 3 layers at most, tshirt,maybe a fleece and a foldable dawn jacket. You will get warm, when walking with backpack. A buff merino scarf is also a handy item ;)keep us informed how is your prep, hugs
mine starts in exactly one week :) I'll walk the Frances up to Leon and then I'll walk the Camino San Salvador from there to Oviedo and finish on the Primitivo. That is the plan

Heads up for the long weekend in Spain, many people will have holidays. If you can plan the trip in the way that you won’t arrive to Santiago NOT on Sunday, you will skip half of the crowds
@caminotellers First, let me start by saying how much I appreciate your videos! They are informative, fun, & inspiring. Second, I'm planning on doing my first Camino starting mid-July of this year on the Frances route. Should I still plan on bringing a long sleeve shirt & a fleece for the evenings? Trying to save as much weight as possible and if I could drop those two it would save me about 435-450 grams.

We always take two layers: the long-sleeve T-shirt, which helps us with sunburns, and the extra light, foldable down jacket, which can be a good idea for colder evenings, Galicia's humidity, and as a pillow if you need a quick rest. Many people use fleece jackets, but we prefer a lightweight, foldable jacket. What do you think?
I drank water from those "safe" water taps on my first Camino and then for a few days I had to relieve myself like a dog on the streets. It's safer Estrella Galicia
Sawyer Filters! You can literally drink water with giardia and other bacteria and parasites and even though it will taste like s**t, it will be pure and safe.

@@caminotellers - we have slowly built our training up over the last year from just walking an hour every day to now walking longer distances regularly with loaded packs. We've tested our footwear, clothes, packs, sleeping bags, and quietly examined our personal reasons for the Camino deeply. We've read your book, made new friends with people who have already done it. We often meet other pilgrims while we are on training walks - the sticks give us away - LOL. In short - we are counting the days !

Sorry for late reply, but we are in the middle of the Caminos, book is useful for extra info and keeping the map with you! There are also few apps that do similar job and weight nothing. We would take a guidebook for history or extra info!

I come from Scotland and the North of Spain (and Portugal) had some of the cleanest rivers and streams I have ever seen. An abundance of fish in them as well.
You will be fine, remember the idea of layers, base, mid and the top! A windbreaker also can be handy as the feeling of cold is also caused by the cold winds!
Hello and another great video. I don't know if you can answer this question: I have booked a one way flight from US to Madrid for April Camino. I have seen posts and comments about needing "proof of onward travel". I was planning on booking return flight after I had started my Camino. Any information on this?
I’ve been to Spain several times and while the Customs and Immigration Service may ask how long you plan to stay in the country, they will not ask for proof. It’s better to have your return ticket way ahead of time because it will likely be much cheaper.

In your opinion, would you take a sleeping back on the primitivo in late april? I only took a sleeping liner on the frances but it was in September. And I'm not an ultra light hiker but I do like to keep it as light as possible. I'm a fairly warm sleeper and I'm guessing that some of the alburgues will have blankets, even if for a small fee. Thanks for the videos and who knows, maybe I'll see you out there someday.
April in primitivo is…cold! Nice dawn/synthetic jacket is a good idea, a really good idea!!! And a nice hat too. Keep us informed about the trail as we will be there few weeks after you !

mine starts in exactly one week :) I'll walk the Frances up to Leon and then I'll walk the Camino San Salvador from there to Oviedo and finish on the Primitivo. That is the plan

Heads up for the long weekend in Spain, many people will have holidays. If you can plan the trip in the way that you won’t arrive to Santiago NOT on Sunday, you will skip half of the crowds

Second, I'm planning on doing my first Camino starting mid-July of this year on the Frances route. Should I still plan on bringing a long sleeve shirt & a fleece for the evenings? Trying to save as much weight as possible and if I could drop those two it would save me about 435-450 grams.
Thanks a million for connecting! We always take two layers: the long-sleeve T-shirt, which helps us with sunburns, and the extra light, foldable down jacket, which can be a good idea for colder evenings, Galicia's humidity, and as a pillow if you need a quick rest. Many people use fleece jackets, but we prefer a lightweight, foldable jacket. What do you think?

Wife and I planning on SEP/OCT Camino. Not set on which one. But time is no issue, so thinking one of the full routes.
Longer it is, better it feels!
I drank water from those "safe" water taps on my first Camino and then for a few days I had to relieve myself like a dog on the streets. It's safer Estrella Galicia

Sawyer Filters! You can literally drink water with giardia and other bacteria and parasites and even though it will taste like s**t, it will be pure and safe.

@@caminotellers - we have slowly built our training up over the last year from just walking an hour every day to now walking longer distances regularly with loaded packs. We've tested our footwear, clothes, packs, sleeping bags, and quietly examined our personal reasons for the Camino deeply. We've read your book, made new friends with people who have already done it. We often meet other pilgrims while we are on training walks - the sticks give us away - LOL. In short - we are counting the days !
We are starting the Camino Frances on March 14. Planning a leisurely pace on 16-22 km per day with rest days weekly. We are from South of Sydney!

Sorry for late reply, but we are in the middle of the Caminos, book is useful for extra info and keeping the map with you! There are also few apps that do similar job and weight nothing. We would take a guidebook for history or extra info!

Are the streams and rivers safe to swim in as there is so much agriculture in Northern Spain?
I come from Scotland and the North of Spain (and Portugal) had some of the cleanest rivers and streams I have ever seen. An abundance of fish in them as well.

You will be fine, remember the idea of layers, base, mid and the top! A windbreaker also can be handy as the feeling of cold is also caused by the cold winds!
Hello and another great video. I don't know if you can answer this question: I have booked a one way flight from US to Madrid for April Camino. I have seen posts and comments about needing "proof of onward travel". I was planning on booking return flight after I had started my Camino. Any information on this?
I’ve been to Spain several times and while the Customs and Immigration Service may ask how long you plan to stay in the country, they will not ask for proof. It’s better to have your return ticket way ahead of time because it will likely be much cheaper.

No, we don’t make a dedicated video only about portugués way, you can find some episodes from previous years, showing some interesting details though
In your opinion, would you take a sleeping back on the primitivo in late april? I only took a sleeping liner on the frances but it was in September. And I'm not an ultra light hiker but I do like to keep it as light as possible. I'm a fairly warm sleeper and I'm guessing that some of the alburgues will have blankets, even if for a small fee. Thanks for the videos and who knows, maybe I'll see you out there someday.
April in primitivo is…cold! Nice dawn/synthetic jacket is a good idea, a really good idea!!! And a nice hat too. Keep us informed about the trail as we will be there few weeks after you !
