I’ve had this pedal for a number of years now simply incredible. Bulletproof. The color button is the magical power button for the universe! Definition, richness, kung fu punch! Next to a compression pedal, this puppy is always on especially for “clean“ playing. Cheers.
Its just a mid scoop though. Most buttons named tone shaping, color and punch are just that.
@@ileutur6863 calling it “just a mid scoop“ is a bit misleading in my opinion. Everything seems to be tightened up and not as mushy when it is not engaged. A more focused dynamic tone in my opinion. Obviously a different circuit than something in let’s say a Sanz amp pedal. That gives its own dynamic emphasis or attenuation.
The way you guys do reviews is the best on RUclips, so I'm glad you guys started doing guitar stuff.
I swear by mine. Got one for my church as well. It makes a difference.
I gave this pedal to a friend in need and changed his life. I've had a few of them and they are amazing
I have this pedal and a sansamp bass driver di that I've had for 20+ years. They do different things for sure. I like the MXR tones, but unfortunately I don't think the pedal is as bullet proof as some would claim in my experience. I've actually had two of them and one is so noisy I can't use it (crackles and pops randomly, so it stays at home), and the other newer one is less prone to random noise but very picky about power supplies. I have found that the MXR demands a Dunlop branded power supply and does not tolerate a One Spot, or chaining off of my Boss Tuner, while the sansamp has no problem doing this. (Other power supplies don't make a solid connection at the jack- tolerances are different.) For this reason, I have cycled it out of my current rig, and miss the tones it is capable of.
I’ve sold my bass d.i+ 15 years ago because I thought it made the bass sound too glassy and artificial. Now darkglass charges a big buck for that freaking same sound and I want my MXR baaaaack!!!!
same here!
Hmmm.. same situation here . But I'm gonna stay with Darkglass for now.... I use b7k into AO...
I bought this pedal 20 years ago and had tried with different basses which make me consider it as very versatile, of course….. it isn’t a magical pedal. The settings for a Rickenbacker doesn’t work for a PBass or a Steinberger or Stingray unless that is what you want. Great as a direct box and user friendly controls. Highly recommended !!!
This is one of my favorite bass effect pedals. I never have the 'color' switch pushed in. It is a little to scooped and sounds a lot like the Sansamp if thats what you're in. I like all of the other features to put in front of my amp (and not use as a DI). The 3 band EQ is good and keeps your basic tone. The distortion sounds great! It can get gritty to full grind. It's a good kind of swiss army knife for bass.
Edit: I had no clue the drive channel has the color on by default! Definitely going to play around with that as a switchable function.
17:29 I’ve been watching you guys since this channel was started. I was a regular at Instrumental Music and thought it was awesome that they had a bass-specific RUclips channel. In the time since, this has become one of the absolute best gear demonstration channels on the whole platform. Seeing one of my comments shown in one of your videos makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I just subscribed to the Guitar Channel knowing that it will have the same consistently excellent quality that this channel has shown over the years. Thank you for doing what you do!
Sincerely, thank you for sticking with us all this time!
I bought this unit when it came out un the late 90's/early 2000's, the knobs were smaller in the earlier version , still have it, built like a tank , great sounding stomp.
I have used many preamps over the years but this MXR is my go to and I have used it for several years now. Awesome pedal!
I have that pedal, every bass player should have one
I love this pedal, Is part of my sound, the color button is always on that brings sound like a tube amplifier. I recommend use with overdrive and modern distortion pedals for example Darkglass Microtubes. Awesome pedal.
I have used this exact one on my base for over 15 years. Still use now that my son has taken over my equipment.
Its BEHS
This and the spectradrive are my favorites doe usable tones.
I love this pedal. I've used for years now. I feel like it takes everything to 11!
I’m using m80 for years. And right now I switch it with B7KU back and forth
Years ago, I bought an M80 strictly to use as a distortion stomp box into my amp’s input. I sold it after a year or so and got the MXR bass distortion pedal (M89 I think). After using a SansAmp for a while and currently a Darkglass Vintage Ultra, I bought myself another M80 to use as an alternate. I especially love that it runs on a 9 volt battery or phantom power. The Darkglass does not.
I was watching this video thinking about how I used to use it and then boom my own comment appears in the video haha love you guys this channel rocks lml
I love mine, and it was a great deal cheaper than Tech 21 and Darkglass.
I also play guitar, so I'm excited to check out the new channel!
That gate function on the distortion channel seems like it would be such an asset with other fuzz/distortion effects, especially with a studio setup!
I've had this one for a while now, and I've tried a bunch of preamps before actually chosing it. EHX Battalion, sansamp, Ampeg SCR-DI and more, but the feeling was just great with the MXR. The OD is very nice too. I use it all the time, on rehearsals and live.
If you're on a budget, check the JOYO Monomyth, it's a killer.
I’ve got 2 of these. I use them for acoustic guitar. They sound great for that!
BOOOO GUITAR BOOOOOO lol
Does anybody play this strange instrument ?
@@ragsna1630Sure, they're student instruments for kids who don't have the hand strength for the strings, and can't reach the scale length yet, right?
If this had an FX loop..... PERFECTION!!!! MXR take note
This was my first pedal ever. And should have been my last😂 would have saved me so much money and time.
Im use this pedal and run with demon fx but separate channel using boss LS2.. straight to AO Darkglass… my bass never lost the bottom sound anymore
MXR Bass DI+ owner here, unless I'm mistaken, there's another cool thing that didn't get mentioned here: the Color, phantom/ground, Gate switches, as well as the names ("CLEAN", "BASS" etc..) are all phosphorescent as in glow-in-the-dark. Pretty neat, and worth mentioning ⚡
Hi Walter - Dave here; You know, I've had this pedal 4 or 5 times and I never knew that!
Awesome demo as always, my bass dudes 😎🤘🏻🎸 there were a couple times I wanted to buy this preamp pedal. Especially since I’ve always liked the smooth clean channel and killer distortion channel it provides. I did ended up purchasing an nu-x m.l.d(Melvin lee Davis) preamp pedal along with a darkglass microtubes x7 and a source audio aftershock for my clean preamp and heavy distortion needs.
And it’s pretty cool that you guys have recently started a guitar channel. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and I keep an open mind on things like this. If you guys also plan on starting a keyboard channel too, I’ll watch that also 😎🤘🏻🎸 🎹
Pretty cool vid. Maes me want to blow the dust off of mine and get it back in use. Another monster that I rarely if ever see anything about these days is the SansAmp Classic. Thought that old thing was just for guitars? Thank again! Hope you check it out and do a vid on it. While it may not have an XLR out, it still does an incredible job of amp and cabinet emulation in literally countless scenarios.
Better late than never. I've been using this for two decades. I've never liked the distortion circuit and wish it had MXR's bass overdrive circuit instead. That said, with the right settings, the distortion can find use in a band setting where it sounds better than alone at home. You've touched on some alternate uses for the distortion channel. I've used it to kick in the slap contour circuit but I've also used it simply as a volume boost or even a mute switch on occasion. When using it as a boost, if you want to avoid the drastic change in tone due to the always-engaged color switch in the distortion channel, you can engage the color switch and cut the bass and treble a bit and boost the mids almost all of the way.
i'm having the 3rd of this. i like everything of it. but the size is a bit big
This pedal releases the 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝.
So many better options. Plus out of all the brands I’ve own for pedals MXR pedals just fall apart after a couple years of use.
This thing is great I don't like Sansamp but MXR sounds cool
Which plug do you put the cable from M80 to? Input vs Return??
I think Return is right as M80 is preamp. Am I right?
Should be, yes. I did find once that it did not work this way with one specific amp at an audition, but most of the time yes, putting M80 Output to amp Return should get you to where the M80 is the preamp and you're then using the amp head's power section.
Great, thanks for the confirmation! I’ll try it with the Return plug first and see how it goes.
Problem with the colour switch is it sucks all the mids. 9/10 that’s definitely getting lost in a live mix unfortunately. Just my 2c
i have one and stack it with my Sansamp
or my super bass fuzz
I never noticed until today that you guys have swapped EMG's into almost everything haha
Almost 😂
I can see it now. The first collab video between this channel and guitar channel will be about a Fender Bass VI.
claasic pedal.ive used it for more than ten years
03:00 which song is this? Please
Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
Yes! Thx 😊
Preferedlive bass DI in beck Hansen's band accordingto Justin Meldal Johnson 👍🤔
Congratulations on your new "The Eggslicer Channel".
SansAmp BDDI sounds better, IMO.
I had this pedal 2 times in my life
Its sucks
It’s just not a good pedal
I can elaborate of you wish
Tell me more... It seems to be quite a versatile pedal that's loaded with features, especially compared to the competition in the same price bracket .
That’s not bass. I can make slap sounds like that with rubber bands and a shovel.
I think I need to unsub from this channel. Too many cool stuff that I don't need.
