Heads up to anyone getting the relentless set or the model J set. They are not single coils, they are humbuckers, it is recomended to use 500k pots with them, they are very dark, and with 250k pots sound very muddy and woofy. I learned that the hard way.
@@Nick_garcia-bs4 I only have experience with the seymour duncan Apollo, EMG JHZ, Model Js, and the relentless Js, the dimarzio are the only sets I needed to use 500k pots with. They are much hotter and much darker, they sound like full humbuckers. While the other mentioned noiseless sets sound like traditional single coils.
Love seeing all these new pickup videos. If you do another set of DiMarzios then I'd recommend Relentless vs 60s or just demonstrating the 60s by itself. Keep up the great content.
I put some in my old battered MIM jazz. Sounds awesome for rock. Loud and fat. My only issue is that because of the curve, there is not much for my thumb to rest on on the neck pickup.
Granted you can adjust the pole pieces, but the pickups should match the radius of the neck at the heel. The individual bridge saddles should match the radius at the heel as well.
I’d love to try these one day. But for now my pup of choice is Avedissian. I went with their KS sig P in my bass. 60s wind and a little hotter at 12.5k Paired it with a custom wiring harness… CTS 250K Ohm Volume Control with .001 Orange Drop Treble Bleed Mod, CTS 250K Ohm Tone Control witk .1 Orange Drop 716P High Performance Tone Capacitor. Pure Tone Full Contact Jack. Wired with Gavitt 22 Gauge Vintage Style Cloth Covered Wire. It’s perfect for the mostly old style punk and doom/sludge metal I play.
I like them but it is just missing an "it factor" for me? maybe i would need more of an a/b comparison between these and other pickups to know my true opinion. an improvement over stock fender pickups for sure! Request for a review of the Dimarzio "split P" model. it turns the P bass into a humbucker!
Billy Sheehan helped with these pickups, they’re based off his Relentless P-bass pickup. The ramp built into the pickup is one of the best ideas ever, along with Dimarzio’s amazing sound… it’s hard to beat the Relentless series pickups.
These j's boast an impessive SNR, but they don't sound like single coils. Otoh, if you want singles that sound like humbuckers, then these will do it, as will other DiMarzio j models with adjustable pole pieces.
Would love to see a dimarzio J shootout….. And then take your 2 favourites and shoot out against your 2 favourites from the Duncan shootout (Apollo cough cough)
They sound insane and the look good so if they sounded 10% worse but look 20% better that’s a net gain of like 9% so .. but they sound insane so that’s a 150%
I put the J's n my J bass hoping to really like them but they are way too hot. I've lowered the pole pieces and the pickups down almost fully and still too hot.
I simply do not get, why +70% output is a good thing. To me it is a con. When switching basses, the whole gain structures of my pedal board and preamps need adjustment. Overdrives and auto-filters have to be adopted, it's a p.i.t.a. Same with active basses and their infamous high outputs. WHY ON EARTH? This is not old school guitar playing where you need to drive the preamp of a vintage Marshall amp. This is bass. Yes, yes, yes, bass guitars have volume controls. But this is not reproducible and exact als "volume full open". I would prefer if all manufacturers of pickups would stick to a standard output level and preamps would stick to a unchanged output policy.
Glenn Fricker has several videos where he PROCLAIMS that people are fools for buying new pickups. He says it is all "hype" and does not make any difference in tone. All the tone come from speakers. He boldly proclaims that pickup manufacturers sell "voodoo" and it is all "marketing hype designed to line the pockets of pickup manufacturers."
That's a misleading summary. His claim is that different guitar pickups of a given construction style generate very little tonal difference after being highly distorted in metal, so the higher value purchase is speakers, which do differ greatly from one another. He then supports the claim with evidence.
So , when I play my Squier 40th Anniversary P with stock pups into my Ampeg , then plug my Fender P with Quarter Pound SPB3 into the same amp with the same eq settings, what accounts for the marked difference in sound?
@@mossy723 You'd have to ask Glenn. Depending upon what day it is, he has a myriad of excuses for the tonal shift. His best excuse is that "people misunderstand what he is saying." or "he never said that, people are putting words in his mouth." Sometimes he will say something like "he's an engineer, not a guitar player." The one thing he's never done is admit that he is fundamentally wrong about pickups having no effect on tone.
Have you seen much of our channel? Slap bass is only a very, VERY tiny part of our demos in general - we may have the least amount of slap of any bass-centric channel out there!
@@TheBassChannel Okay, I confess I jumped the gun here 😅. I had been through so many bass demo videos and they all slapped away and this one started out like that so I misjudged. Sorry guys! 🙏🏼

Good to know! So also all the noiseless pickups should take a 500K ? also the Bartolini dual coil ?

@@Nick_garcia-bs4imo yes. All hum cancelling Fender replacement bass pickups sound better with 500k pots.
Would it be because it’s a stacked single coil pickup
That 'Distant Early Warning' was awesome. Thanks for the review.
I fitted these to a jazz bass and a John East J-Retro 01 preamp. I was totally blown away.
What genre do you play? I have the same preamp
@@dannynicholson6195 I play lots of genres. From pop to punk and everything in between. I play in a cover band
Ive got Relentless middle in one bass and Sixties P in another. I knew they were amazing but you guys always do a great presentation.
IMO those are the best sounding P/J pickups.
I have billy sheehan relentless middle on my yamaha billy sheehan and kicks ass. I wish they will release a 5 string PJ set..

Thanks man!

Excellent explanation and demo.

I’ve been on the fence about an upgrade to my Precision Lyte. This review just pushed me over. Relentless PJs are on the way
Great video! i use them in a MIM Fender, they are so good
Don't cut your little fella with this axe!

Maybe it was just me but they sounded a little dark or low mid heavy.
They hit. How do you find they compare to Model Js?
I like them a lot! They were very bright but not glassy
Dimarzios have always been known for having adjustable pole pieces. They are the best P bass pickups 💯 for sure
Those pickups are relentless
Absolutely zero relent
Respectively was anyone keeping count?
Coming up next: we switch every set of relentless for EMGs.
Good idea!!!
f that
SOUNDS GOOD CHIEF

ash or alder body. ,the j pickups sound dam good.
There's no such thing as tone wood in electric instruments.
Oh also, not sure if you guys covered it, do they fit 5 strings?
Neil Diamond pickups?
It really annoys me they dont make a 5 string version, they would be perfect

I should try these personally. Here they don't sound good to me. Over bassy and a bit muddy.
Can I aks you a question about that bass?👹💛
Dimarzio is a brand I have never used
Me either! I liked them tho
I put the J's n my J bass hoping to really like them but they are way too hot. I've lowered the pole pieces and the pickups down almost fully and still too hot.
You might want to exchange them for the sixties.
Have you tried wiring them in parallel?
A bit of a selfish ask, but it would be awesome if you could shoot out these with EMG Js to see how they compare to actives
Selfish because I'm trying to replace my J pickups lmao
Adjustable pole pieces should be mandatory in bass pickups. But 70% more output? Nah...
