Sorry to be late, but I'll tell you how I studied for history. When I was in high school, I didn't take that many notes from the textbook.
During class, I'd listen carefully to the teacher explanation of the matter and eventually take some notes from what was said. I usually also intervene in class to start a discussion.
When home, I'd read the whole chapter as if it were a novel. I just imagined everything in my head like if it were a movie. Then, I'd highlight the most relevant parts and write a little summary of what I remember based on the context.
After I was finished, I'd read everything again and added things from the web that it might be interesting to expand upon.
I love this method because it made me enjoy history even more. It's been two years since I graduated high school, but I still remember almost everything from my European history and philosophy classes. 😄

I didn’t study history by the time I got to high school and definitely not in college. Most of this stuff we have been learning since elementary school. It just get more in depth as we go along in school. The main points of history don’t change. So if you know the basics of each event, then you good.

Wow! I just took the notes that were given, and looked at them 5 minutes before the test. I usually got ‘As’ in history. May be an occasional high ‘B’.

Currently taking APUSH! I took AP Euro last year and here's my advice:
    1. Enjoy it! Euro is by far my favorite AP history and it is so interesting!
    2. Don' bother memorizing specific battles- they won't show up on the AP exam
    3. Something worth memorizing is what happens during every 50 years (so 1400-1450, 1450-1500, etc). You still get an idea on what happened when but you won't have to memorize dates.
    4. Knowing the following trends will be helpful: women, religion, and art
    5. Chances are, you are going to get on the free response and go "what??????" Stay calm, think about the context of the question (time period, author, etc), and make up an answer. I'm not going to lie, I made up a LOT of stuff on the AP exam.
    6. I don't know about your class, but for me, it helped to make flashcards (or just look up ones on Quizlet) to help get the specifics down for chapter tests. I wouldn't stress too much about memorizing all of them for the AP exam, though. Just one flip thru should be enough
    7. GET A PREP BOOK! I cannot emphasize how helpful it is to have one of these

    • @lukeferrante497
      @lukeferrante497 6 лет назад +7

Headphonetiger which prep book do you recommend?

I recommend the Crash Course one
      www.amazon.com/European-History-Course-Advanced-Placement/dp/0738612014/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1513648510&sr=8-2&keywords=ap+euro+crash+course

Headphonetiger do you think taking ap world history/Euro history would be too difficult? I'm currently in AP human for freshman year and we definitely never do DBQ's only FRQ's.

    • @headphonetiger8822
      @headphonetiger8822 6 лет назад +4

Priscilla An It really depends on your teacher. I personally didn't find it hard at all but every class is different so ask upperclassmen. DBQs are basically easier FRQs since the information is given to you. Although you do have to provide at least one piece of outside evidence and do a synthesis type thing (I don't know what it's called now), together they are only worth 2 points and they aren't difficult because you already do those two things in other FRQs

    Color code
    Purple: Essencial question
Blue: Info that answer the essencial question
Yellow: vocabulary that’s bold/highlighted in the book
    Pink: questions that you have
Green: information that correspond to the ap course framework

Good luck with AP Euro! I took AP Euro last year and passed with a 5, and one thing I would REALLY recommend is that you really don't have to know every detail about something. For me, I wish I really understood the CAUSE and EFFECT. Why somethin happened and what led up to it? What was the effect, what was created because of this event?
I would REALLY recommend you to binge through Tom Richey because he was one of my favorite AP Euro teachers on youtube for sure.
Furthermore, KNOW KNOW KNOW your contextualization. I cannot stress this enough because the AP test always loves to test your context (which would go back to the cause and effect). And if you are writing a DBQ or LEQ, make sure you HIPP EVERY DOCUMENT so you are for sure to get the points!
That's all I have, but I hope you see this and take some of the advice!!

I am currently studying History in high school and I usually take notes in class when the teacher is teaching
Those notes are usually kinda messy so I spend a while rearranging and revising those notes. Our history textbooks have a LOT of information, so I usually use sticky notes and annotate the textbook (sometimes with extra information from the net) and just generally engage with the text. Trying to picture what happened, like a movie really helps. One of the best things about history is that if done right it’s like reading a beautiful story, which is also why it’s one of my favourite subjects

I took AP Euro last year and passed the exam w/ a 4 and I was so shook tbh. But I’m pretty sure you’re already doing my main tip which is to basically just do your reading. Like ALWAYS. Doing your reading and being able to know what your teacher lectures about in class is so important bc it helps you process everything so much better once you’ve read and you hear it all over again the next day in class. Lol but yes the reading is the most important part as my teacher last year (he was pretty great) always emphasized to us

i took AP euro back in 2015 and passed with a 4. honestly the best advice i can give is to write down practically everything your instructor says, then re write those notes later on after class, and even a while after you went over the material the first time. im doing the same thing for my US history class in college. also dont focus on the dates too much (although dates are good to know when it comes to remembering the context of the time) because its rare the exam will ask you anything specific to a certain year over a certain event.

    I just answer 5 questions:
    - background info (who, where, and when)
    - the causes of the incident
    - the incident
    - the effects of the incident
    - the purpose of the incident
It may be easier to remember it as:
    - who (background info)
    - where (background info)
    - when (background info)
    - how did it happen (the causes of the incident)
    - what happened (the incident)
    - what were the effects (the effects of the incident)
    - why did it happen (the purpose of the incident)
This is more of an outline for events, but if you are taking notes on a specific person or place, the “incident” is what they did or what happened there. If you are taking about other concepts, the “incident” is basically what the concept is.

I didn't have a good experience with the class because our teacher never taught us anything (crazy I know), and all we did was answer 5 questions from the text book daily (it was almost optional to read because you could easily find the answer in the text). I took A.P. European History during my high school freshman year. I didn't take any notes, and we barely used our book since our teacher used PowerPoint to present the chapters and lessons to us. She kinda used the same techniques you use, except she didn't highlight anything. She would, however, make the words bold if it was a key concept or something to be remember for a test or for future reference. This video was really helpful since I am taking A.P. U.S. History now, and I needed a few new ways to take notes specifically for this class.

I took IB HL History and I have to agree that timelines are the best thing to study from. I had pages and pages of timelines with all the modules mixed together (for example, all of the authoritarian governments in different countries and periods + the cold war stuff) and it just helps so much to know when is everything happening, and you might even be able to write arguments about how different events influenced the other. It's also more efficient to study visually that way.

I took APEuro and I think knowing the general trends and timeline helped me put things into perspective. Knowing the little details wasn't that essential to the test because most things are document based. My teacher always emphasized knowing the significance and the cause and effect beyond the specific country to the general world.

I'm taking Pure history under the GCE O Level. It consists of European History from World War 1 to Cold War, Malaya's and Vietnam's colonisation and decolonisation. I really feel that timelines (for source-based questions or SBQs) and copying down the key ideas for essays from my teacher's notes really help with my studying. During exams, I'll read sources very carefully and pick out the main messages. For the questions and essays, I'll break them apart and answer them. Btw I'm from Singapore!!

I’m taking “Humanities II: Renaissance to the 20th Century” at a university. My high school note taking skills from 12 years ago are not sufficient for college. Thank you for showing a different way. It’s more involved, but it’s far more thorough. I was just writing down facts, but I’m bad at picking out what’s important, as it seems every word is. My text doesn’t have questions to prompt what to pick out, so I’m worried I’ll fail but I’ll give this a shot.

it takes me about an hour usally to read 5-10 pages of my history book taking notes. My teacher didn't give me a essential question or anything its more of just take notes on the cumulative topics we are discussing in the module. With time i'm sure my reading comprehension and summarizing will get better like you said.
