I didn't realize that people thought it was a waste of time to rewrite your notes, I ALWAYS rewrote my notes, even if it's studies for my personal use, if it's something I want to remember, I make a note of it, and then I'll write it in a more organized manner because most times during lectures it's a quick jot of the "idea" and not the full concept. Plus, it always gave me yet another chance to review whatever I was learning, the more times it was written or reviewed, the more likely it is that when it came to practical application or tests, I knew the content. But I also know a lot of people that NEVER take notes at all, no matter what we are doing.

I would rewrite notes and make quizlets of each unit to help me study. I was the quizlet girl. Because I have ADHD, I'd get too focused on rewriting my notes super pretty that I'd miss information. However the quizlet thing helped me because I could type out my notes and keep them organized without feeling like it had to be perfectly neat.

Honestly, I think pretty much anyone who says to Not rewrite notes are in 'that' group of people who are uber talented at organizing, AND able to write SMALL and neatly and quickly and never accidentally write a wrong letter/word.
Everyone hates their own handwriting and thinks someone else has better writing, but "YOU" are the one who has to read those notes, not that other person who thinks your handwriting is lovely.

OK, first, you are anything but average...you are exceptional...and perhaps too modest to realize that just yet. Your note-taking system is very well organized and neat. That means not only does it have value for you, but could also help other students immensely. I made some decent side coin selling copies of my lecture notes when I was in college and Paramedic school. I gave away a first copy as a sample and then offered study notes for a small charge to those who wanted them. Today you could scan or photograph and send them and not even need to make hard copies...extra cash for little extra work, now there’s a good business model, huh? 😁 I hope you have a great semester!

EDIT: I'm tired of seeing emails from replies to this, so let me clarify something: I didn't say that EVERY SINGLE PERSON learns this way. I said there's a LINK and couldn't believe that people with dismiss it altogether. There's a difference between saying "rewriting notes doesn't help me" and the blanket statement that "rewriting notes is a waste of time". I'm perfectly aware that there are different styles of learning, and that those who are kinesthetic or auditory learners won't find much use in rewriting the notes.
Again, I didn't say "I can't believe they said it's a waste of time. Studies show that it's the only way to learn" I said "I can't believe they said it's a waste of time. Studies show there is a link."
    ----
I can't believe that people say that rewriting notes is a waste of time. There have been studies that show that there is a link between repetition and writing in long-hand to memory and learning.

I think it depends on learning styles. As a auditory learner writing them over would be pointless for me. Taking notes in the first place was pointless. I’d record lectures then listen back to them. Then I’d take part in study groups and discuss. For math and science going through the steps in my head helped.

rewritting notes can be super useful - I used this method all the time in university.
But the most important study "hack" is making past exams and tests; if the teacher doesn't provide them, ask older students about the type of questions and exercices you can expect in that discipline. Many times, teachers repeat questions or use the same examples on the exams and can make or break your grade besides, it's a great way to meet new people and make friends! :D

And among the multitude of note taking videos on RUclips yours is one of the best. It doesn't have anything to do with being smart when listening to the lecture, it is just the individual way of processing new information and even those students that understand immediately need to write and rewrite the notes if they want to have the information deposited in the long term memory. Omg. I’m definitely going to be using your highlighting hack!!! I’m obsessed with taking notes, and always struggle with highlighters getting dirty/stained/swearing ink. And always wait til at least an hour goes by, before doing the highlighting. So thank you!!!

🙌🏻 I’m so glad you made this video! Even though I’m no longer a university student, I do work in a field where I have to keep up with annual guidelines and taking certifications. Thank you for this so so much especially since October 1 is the start of brand new guidelines!
I do highlight and then write as well. It’s bad if I don’t.
Thank you a billion times for this video! Best wishes.

OH MY GOD ARE YOU KIDDING ME I literally JUST started highlighting then writing on top today!! that's crazy, It's so smart to do that lmao. I use brush pens to "highlight" and the black ink just smears and everything looks ugly. Doing it the other way around just keeps everything clean and neat though its definitely annoying guessing how much you're gonna need but I'll probably know with time just like you. So many helpful tips in this video thanks a lot

I like how simple your note taking method is. I see lots of other videos that uses so many stuffs, and implement such complicated things. Honestly it's quite overwhelming. I do think that everyone has different approach to learn faster, but in my sake, yours works the best.

I love this video, I also rewrite my notes. I always take notes on my computer during class but I can't study from my computer so I rewrite them. My classmates think I'm crazy for handwriting a summary and not typing it. What I also find useful is to watch videos about the subject on youtube if you can find some, that way you hear everything again and it is more likely to stick. My history teacher in high school used to make these videos about the subjects we saw in class and I always watched them. Also, please keep making videos like this because they make me excited to study! So thank you for that!

I didn't all the time when I was studying but when I did I loved re-writing notes coz not only it encourages me to revise and absorb information but also to use the different pens that I have and practice styles of calligraphy.
And I think it is a good idea to highlight first, then write on top. Thanks for the tip! :)

I love the idea of rewriting but I have issues with my hands, so once it is. I attend online so stopping and repeating a lecture is my benefit but I am going to try the margin idea. That will keep thing more organized. Thanks!

  • @ykihx

During lectures I tried my best to mostly listen instead of taking notes. I realized I always had to end up teaching myself after class anyway so I gave up trying to write down as much as possible.
I can't believe I never thought of putting subtopics in a sidebar!!! Thanks for the tip 😁
I also find colored pens too straining for notes so I often use them for underlining instead of highlighting. This is also good if you're stuck with thin paper and don't want bleeding 🤢

TheCoffeeMonsterzCO SOOO I TRIED IT and I’m kinda digging it 😂
For those who are curious, at first I kept messing up because either I had too much of a highlighted strip, or too little. What I did to fix this was I pretended/ghosted whatever I wanted to highlight, just to see where my writing would end of that makes sense. After trial and error, I kinda like this! The only thing is my regular ball point pens don’t work on writing over the highlighter, so I recommend the Ink Joy gel pen or I used the Pen Gems with the Uniball Hybrid ink replacement. I hope this helps anyone who is curious! :)

When I was in college I used to record all my lectures or one on ones with my professors. Then I would listen to them while going over my recopied notes and add anything they explained that I didn't already get down onto a sticky note

  • @MissRuthina

Tbh, even though I understand my notes as I write them. Rewriting them has always had two really obvious benefits for me. The first, is that I can actually read them if I rewrite them. The second, is that it's so much easier to retain the information if you purposefully rewrite them. I find that simply rereading my notes leads me to miss things because my brain tells me "oh, you've already read this before" and I unintentionally end up skipping things.
That's why I also agree with teaching yourself or a willing subject. Because sometimes they will have questions for you to try and answer and it means you may get to expand your knowledge of the subject at the same time.

I love the highlight first idea and adding the border. I also color-code my highlights when I'm reviewing my notes: pink is people, green is geographic info, blue is time/dates, yellow is for quotes or citations. I also have orange & purple, and I may pull one of those if the instructor says it will be on the test but I don't necessarily find that fact important. I now use the same color-coding system when annotating my books (which I don't do often, but my code is in place when I find it helpful). Thank you for the tips!

Re-writing notes is a great way to learn - it helps your brain make more connections and you usually remember the material better. Ditto for writing by hand, as opposed to taking notes on a device. Hand printing and cursive each activate different parts of the brain. Super important skills.
