Probably the 2V. I don’t think the 3V version was put in the F150. Pretty much the same engine. The 4.6 3V in the Mustang had similar issues as the 5.4 3V.

I know the engine is probably going to go sooner or later, it is what it is, I can admit the fault of the 3v 5.4. But it has always been a great truck. Thanks for comments just purchased a f150 04 234000 miles and one owners no motor sounds paperwork from day one with all services till now and I’m happy I got a ford older model 4.6 great motor realible
I bought my Silver 2007 Ford F-150 FX4 it was my dream truck. I still have it and has 190,500 miles. I take really good care of it and everyone always compliments the truck. I love it and will drive it for as long as I can.
I have a 2005 King Ranch F-150 with the 3 valve 5.4 L engine.Added Volant cold air induction system,a Edge Lightning computer tuner. I have 112000 miles on the odometer. Love this truck. Appreciate the keypad info.I had the "Limp Home" mode kick in 1 time(a squirrel had feasted on a wiring harness behind the intake manifold). Look forward to more videos from you.
2:30 great stuff about the keypad. Also if you press 2 after your code it will unlock both front doors, so if you press 3/4 it'll unlock ALL 4 doors. I love the keypad. I had a 2000 z71 for 2 decades and really wanted the keypad, but i just started carrying a extra alarm fob all alone in my pocket
I just picked on up 08 fx4 with 202,000 runs great I’m doing a paint job on it. And trying to score nice seats. If it were a Chevy I’d be looking for a transmission and a loaner.
I just bought a beautiful 2008 for $2,000 with 245,000 miles on it original owner replaced everything except the engine and trans and runs amazing I love it
Another fun fact, I have an 07 5.4 lariat. The clutch fan on it has the electronic actuation. Which means the ecm can turn the fan on 100% locked on for severe conditions. Sounds like a semi! Also this fan will pull more cfm of air than any electric fan. However you will feel the horsepower loss. Just look to see if you have the wiring harness that goes to the fan clutch.
I have a 2004 (Updated body style) with 127,000 miles and I’ve only done oil changes, brakes, transmission fluid flush and that’s it. It’s lifted and I replaced the strut 6” lift blocks with Fabtech 6” Coilovers. It’s been so dang reliable that I’ve kept it this long and bought a 2017 (bought new in 2017) and couldn’t bare to part with my old girl. She’s towed boats, friends cars (on car trailer), been in the mountain trails, sand dunes, mud bogs, snow, helped dozens of friends/family move and everything in between! She’s my ride or die!
I have a 2006 for f-150 322,000 miles and i just did a trip from Dallas tx to Aguascalientes Mexico 🇲🇽 (19 hrs drive) then came back, No mechanical issues at all, just a blown out tire and that's it Love my ford 😂
I have a 2008 with the redesigned head, phasers have been blocked, she has 368K. These trucks can last a long time if you take care of them. I'm trying for 400K if not 500K.
Got an 07' f150 4×4. Only problems shes given me were a busted seal on the front passenger hub actuator and a bum drivers side window regulator. This was helpful, thanks!
I got my 04' 4.6v8, 14 years ago. With 50,xxx miles. 260,xxx miles now still running strong. But after 14 years of owning it, I just learned I can open all door from the key pad. Lol. Thank you.
2007 2WD Supercab with 161,000 miles no issues. 5.4L has been pretty good and tow a small boat. Stupid warning lights like the airbag, parking brake have been on but drives great. Only thing is the 36 gallon fuel tank and city driving breaks the bank man
My 07 5.4L is clocking in at 182k miles right now. Have to say it’s been dead reliable. Appreciate these videos on these F-150s! Did spark plugs, engine coolant flush, transmission pan drop, axle fluid… well worth it with the price of new ones!
Just bought one, 06 with 50,000 miles. Was an old ladies husband who passed away. Garage kept. 12 grand off the lot. Im only 24 so this is gonna be my forever truck I believe. Im in love with it
I worked at a scrap yard for the better part of a decade, we couldn't warranty these engines because of everyone being afraid of failure. I have owned my 5.4 3v for about 6 years now, sitting just shy of 200k, and I want to say these engines have gotten a bad rap. i regularly abuse my truck, but I also regularly maintain it and she hasn't let me down (knock on wood). These are great motors making great power with plenty of aftermarket support but still great out of the box, I stand among few as a believer in the 3 valve. The fact is they have a bad design that is easy to remedy, lock the phasers and update the spark plugs. If you own a 5.4 3v my advice is either lock out the cam phasers, or just know in the back of your mind you'll be replacing the engine at some point, like you said in the video "that could all change tomorrow" lol
What you mean about "update spark plugs"?, I've had my 2006 FX4 for 16 years, last time I replaced Spark plugs I called Ford dealer and they said their Motorcraft Spark Plugs are the same design, the same ones that break in certain circumstances.
2008 f250 superduty 5.4 318k on her original drive train my buddies dad never missed an oil change only issue has a exhaust tick from passenger front exhaust stud
I replaced the aftermarket fan clutch for an original Motorcraft Fan Clutch, one of the best things I've done to my 2006 Fx4, doesn't make that intense aerial noise anymore, all aftermaket flan clutchs I found were "heavy duty" or something like that, I thought it meant durability but instead it seemed it'll engage with less temperature ...I hated it. Now with my OEM Fan Clutch my truck sounds so healthy is therapeutic.
Had a 2004 F150 with the 3v 5.4 and it seized at 241xxx miles it was leaking 5 quarts of oil a day due to timing chain slapping against the cover because of the god awful cam phasers. Bought a 96 f150 5.0 and it has 521xxx miles on all original drivetrain still running strong
Every truck is different because I have an 05 with145k miles and the trans has had to have been rebuilt twice (once my the previous owner and once by me) the alternator went out and I had to replace one of the wheel hubs. It’s got a 5 inch lift on 35s which may be part of the transmission problem but I also think it has to do with the previous owner using it as a work truck and he didn’t take great care of it. Hopefully it will last me a long time though
There’s one thing to know. If you drive one long enough, you’ll either get really good at working on it, or you’ll be walking everywhere you go. My 2008 with the 4.6 liter has 280k miles on it. Both modular engines had the spark plug issues and the plastic intake/coolant crossover tube issues, but aside from that the 4.6 is a good engine. Replacing an intake or having a blown out plug repaired is a lot cheaper than paying $50k to $70k for a new F150. I think the 3 valve 5.4s were the worst engines Ford ever made. They seem to be more prone to total failure than the 4.6.
Ha I definitely agree with the first sentence all the way. I just pulled the transmission on mine first trans I have ever pulled so I haven’t been recording a video, but honestly, it’s a pretty straight forward process. They’re not terrible engines, but they most definitely could’ve been better. Maintenance is a huge factor in keeping these engines going. That’s not to say that it still wouldn’t have a failure.
‘06 FX4 owner here. Just another little tidbit, if you ever forget or buy a new(used) truck and don’t have the code, it’s on a plate behind the plastic on the back of the cab. Some earlier models it’s on a plate somewhere under the dash on the drivers side. Possibly on the firewall behind the carpet and insulation.
That locking and unlocking with the keypad has been on Fords/Lincolns since the 1980's. On the cars, you could even pop the trunk with it. My grandparents always had the Lincoln Mark V/ Mark VII and Towncars for her and Broncos/Expeditions for him.
I got an 04 f150. I've only had to replace transmission once for 3k. It's about 160k miles. Biggest issue is windows not coming up or down without fiddling with the buttons over and over.
Same year, same mileage, different parts. Instead of the transmission the engine decided to grenade itself. The valves hit one of the pistons and everything went to shit. Although this happened, it still drove (albeit poorly) to the shop. 😂
Mine isn't that fancy.. 4.6 liter.. '04 170K miles reg.cab 4WD I like the extra doors . Rust is starting to take a toll. Longest vehicle ever owned. Thx Ford
Your engine bay has so much more room then mine! I did the timing job on my 2005 5.4 3 valve and holy shit it was tight. I love this truck. The body is one of the best truck bodies ever and by far the best ford has ever made, and they are so customizable as long as you do it right (please dont add flairs without spacers on these trucks I keep seeing em around and it looks so bad), also the interior Is so comfortable, and finally my favourite thing the power. Iv drag raced people in my truck and have beat bmws, chargers, subarus, I even beat a raptor on the dirt because my truck was the last without traction control. Iv put so much money into it and most people dont get why i do until i take them for a drive
First, I want to say I really enjoy your channel - it's provided a lot of great truck info. I have a question about my FX F150 with 4WD. The tilt steering lever no longer allows me to move the steering wheel up and down for adjustment. Do you have any suggestions on how I might be able to release the mechanism so I can adjust the wheel position?
I’d take the lower panel under the steering wheel off and see if you can see what might be causing it to hang up. It could be an issue with the release mechanism or it could be froze up
Very informative. I'm having problem pumping gas. I've changed the purge valve...charcoal canister... fuel rail sensor...cleaned filler neck strainer....and it still clicks the gas handle while pumping. Will the sensor on top of the tank fix this? HELP!!!
I have a 2004 fx4 4wd f150 supercab really nice put 13k in it still no crank new motor new everything man and i got a new ecm and it fired right up its amazing now i wont have a vehichke 25 to 30 yrs or more thanks for the video nice truck bro im running 33s with 20rs but idk the gas mileage yet
2003-2004 5.3 were rated 295 hp and 330 torque and 2005-2006 310 hp 335 torque. The 2003-2005 6.0 345 hp and 380 torque so the horsepower was the same as the 5.3 but your torque was a bit higher but also the Silverado was lighter and reved more freely which is why the Silverado 5.3 is faster than the f150 by a bit.
For sure, the numbers on paper say one thing, however that particular 5.4 has actually beat two 5.3’s from a dig while on 35’s. Granted truck is well taken care of and tuned with a cold air, but however the 5.4’s make a decent torque down low and can move quite quickly if they’re taken care of
The 5.4 was built to be efficient for what the average truck owner needed. Ford shrunk the bore size and kept a long stroke. With the cam phasers it gets 90% torque at 2000rpms. Other makes need high rpms to reach 90%torque
Just bought a 2004 Lariat. I like it but I can't read the odometer. I'm going to pull the instrument cluster and replace all the light bulbs. Then maybe I can deal with the check engine light. I drove 100 miles to get it home. It drove and ran pretty good.
Regarding the instrument cluster, systems self test, that is only relevant on Lariat trims (was the King Ranch trim available then? The Platinum trim was a Lincoln then). However, all trim levels could do that since maybe the 12th gen. Everything else, I already knew (I don't use the keypad, because the dealer never told me what the previous owners combo was (2006 model, I bought on 2009 with 23k miles), and I don't want to remove the rear seat back to get the factory set code on the module behind the seat)
The thing you said at the end about the tires is true for all 04-08 f150s. I have a 08 f150 FX4 and put 33/'12.5/20 on it and they rubbed. Even after I put a 4.5inch lift on it they did. So I had to do a little modification to fix it. They didn't rub bad just when turning. But they did rub.
He said it could fit 35/12.50s. You said 33/12.50s rub? If 33s rub how could 35s not be a huge issue? I put 275/70 on a 9" wheel and they rubbed on the front valance
Got mine off of Amazon from DNA motoring but they’re only offering the amber reflectors right now. Not sure if they discontinued or just temporarily stopped production
Bud I got a 2007 Ford F-150 and just threw 35s on 18s with the rancho strut leveling kit it’s amazing ride. I actually did that because I saw your truck man. but would be pretty cool if you made a IG page to show off or let people show off their Ford F-150 builds
we have a 2007 5.4L with 310,000+ miles on it. no major issues. the oil pressure is just ever so slightly low now, but not worth an engine swap like a shop would tell you it needs. good gosh, maybe replace the oil pump first. maybe replace the tensioner pulley and serpentine belt first. don't get bent over the barrel when there are super cheap fixes you can do yourself.
Found out in my 2004 F150 Lariat 5.4 that it has a hidden feature for the gauge cluster when you hold the set up and reset button then putting the ignition to on II and clicking on those two again in order to work. To move to another one press reset again to show all of its lights and also its basically showing the sensors on how they are at the moment. My truck has 110,000 miles and still runs like new!
WOW I learned so much from this video. I learned that my 2004 F150 has no keypad I learned that I don't have electric fans just 1 giant fan. I learned I don't have the 3 buttons for the gages and I learned I already have 20's on my finally I learned that 2004 through 08 are not like your truck and I wasted about 10 min on a video that had nothing comparable to my truck.
I got a 06 Ford platinum with about 248k miles and she runs like new and is super reliable she does give me some problems here and there but never anything major
I was in the market for a new work truck when my old '99 Chevy was nearing 400k miles. I found a 2006 F-150 Lariat with 121k miles on it. (This was in late 2017.) I held off on using it until I sold the old Chevy. Now I have a Ford with 138,212 miles (driving it now), and I have to pull the golf cart cause it won't pull my boat. (My wife has to pull that with her Chevy.)
The code thing about the 3-4 is the same as it has been on all Fords with the door access, except it isn't button specific but actually code specific. What that means is to just hit the last button of YOUR code a second time and it unlocks all doors. Just to clarify.
I bought my 2004 super crew for 3 grand put in a 'new' engine with 90k miles, new suspension, new spark plugs, and replaced all the transmission fluid (transmission has 320k miles and Goin strong). I love it, bought it for 3k, put in about 7k and it's borderline perfect, next is adding a turbo. Not sure if that's a good idea tho 😅

I got them off of Amazon, they bolt right up for the 04-14 models, however the harness changed in 07 to allow them to be fully functional with the puddle lights. They fit but the controls may be backwards and the puddle lights may not work on a older model
Gotta 05 xl with 4.6 it’s lil 2wd bubba build leveling kit 35x12.50 on 20x10 hostiles but it sadly burns oil and has a trans slip now but still no miss or check engine light but every now and then my over drive messes up and oil burning I’ve been told is most likely valve guides because under load don’t burn oil but at idle barley smokes and smoke after ab 15 minutes after running really bad but oil level hasn’t changed in 2 months🤷🏻♂️

You got a link for the tuner?
I just got a 2005 with 313k an still running with no lights on an runs great!
I own a 2008 f150 xlt with 337 000 km. Runs Great..no check engine light...Reg. oil changes...plugs...filters..no problems...Love it.!!!
You got a killer detail on that paint looks good !!!
Just picked up an 05 with 77k miles. No rust. Mint conditions. Love the video 👊
Whoa, wat a great deal for U. My truck, original owner=2007 with 90k miles. Absolutely LOVE this Beast.
I’m thinking of getting me a 2005 100,000 for 10k but I don’t know if it’s a deal or not
You got a steal of a deal!!
How much? 4.6 or 5.4?
2:30 great stuff about the keypad. Also if you press 2 after your code it will unlock both front doors, so if you press 3/4 it'll unlock ALL 4 doors. I love the keypad. I had a 2000 z71 for 2 decades and really wanted the keypad, but i just started carrying a extra alarm fob all alone in my pocket
I just picked on up 08 fx4 with 202,000 runs great I’m doing a paint job on it. And trying to score nice seats. If it were a Chevy I’d be looking for a transmission and a loaner.
I just bought a beautiful 2008 for $2,000 with 245,000 miles on it original owner replaced everything except the engine and trans and runs amazing I love it
I have a 2004 xlt with the 4.6 and 170k miles and it's still running strong after a rebuilt transmission and a few oil leaks
She’s my ride or die!
the paint looks so good haha
I have a 2006 for f-150 322,000 miles and i just did a trip from Dallas tx to Aguascalientes Mexico 🇲🇽 (19 hrs drive) then came back,
No mechanical issues at all, just a blown out tire and that's it
Love my ford 😂
Only thing is the 36 gallon fuel tank and city driving breaks the bank man
I have a 2008 Ford 150 4x4 117,457 miles……… Love it………Bravo mon capitaine
My 07 5.4L is clocking in at 182k miles right now. Have to say it’s been dead reliable. Appreciate these videos on these F-150s! Did spark plugs, engine coolant flush, transmission pan drop, axle fluid… well worth it with the price of new ones!
I recently bought one 201000 miles rn been good to me have a couple things I’m trying to figure out
@@ericllanes9402 Find a good mechanic and don’t look back! I enjoy seeing people take care of things and keeping their vehicles on the road.
Just bought one, 06 with 50,000 miles. Was an old ladies husband who passed away. Garage kept. 12 grand off the lot. Im only 24 so this is gonna be my forever truck I believe. Im in love with it
06 3 valve with 475000km up here in Canada. Never been apart.😊
I own an 05 f150 w the 5.4 with 133k miles cam phasers have ticked since 78k and she’s still running strong!
Black trucks been beat, broke, put back together and ready to do it all again! At least until tomorrow 🤷🏻♂️😂
What you mean about "update spark plugs"?, I've had my 2006 FX4 for 16 years, last time I replaced Spark plugs I called Ford dealer and they said their Motorcraft Spark Plugs are the same design, the same ones that break in certain circumstances.
How do you lock out the phasers? Actually what is a cam phaser?
@@JayThompson25 How do you lock out cam phasers.
@@JayThompson25 I'm about to buy an 2008 with the 5.4. But now I'm thinking of maybe not
My dad died last month and I now own his 2005 6.0 f350. Glad to know there’s people who can teach me stuff about it since he’s gone
Sorry for your loss. Congratulations on the truck.
I have a 2008 Ford F150 and I have had it since 2010 and it has 81,000 miles on it right now love this truck man
2008 f250 superduty 5.4 318k on her original drive train my buddies dad never missed an oil change only issue has a exhaust tick from passenger front exhaust stud
I have a secret for you, don't wear socks with crocks. 😂 Your reflection in that beautiful truck told on you.
I have a 2005 f150 and I love it I've done most of the work on it myself but there were things that I did not learn until now thanks for the video.
@@JayThompson25 I hear ya. I just had my transmission rebuilt at 270k miles. Broken reverse band.
Got a 2007 f-150 stx 4.2 with242,000 miles on it still a beast no problems at all best truck I've ever had
I've got a 2005 f150 fx4 with 126k,love my truck !
04 F150 Lariat with 413,xxx on the original 5.4. Truck gets me A-B and still looks good leveled on 20x12’s on 33’s
Hey…have a f 150, 2007 with 283,000 mi. Has a 3 valve triton V8. No noise and looks great. Believe oil is the key. Every 5k miles. Love the drive.
You can buy an entire button set/module for $18 on ebay.
Same year, same mileage, different parts. Instead of the transmission the engine decided to grenade itself. The valves hit one of the pistons and everything went to shit. Although this happened, it still drove (albeit poorly) to the shop. 😂
Heck your ground wite that runs through rubber boot from chassis to driver door. Mine broke from opening and closing. Its the black wire, big wire.
i got a 2007 ford f-150 with a 5.4 original everything with 618,000ish miles and still runs strong
Mine isn't that fancy.. 4.6 liter.. '04 170K miles reg.cab 4WD I like the extra doors . Rust is starting to take a toll. Longest vehicle ever owned. Thx Ford
got a 05 f150. 144,000 miles and a u joint failed on my way home on highway. Now i get the joy of replacing tans, transfer case and drive shaft
Glad the f150 content is back. Keep it coming man🤘👍
Your engine bay has so much more room then mine!
Just got an ‘06 KR and love it! Love the black!!
How do you haul a trailer on this truck ? Where is the haul button ?
Overhaul can be turned off besides the console shifter or on the end of a column shifter
Have a 2004 f350 4x4 crew cab 5.4l have 498,893 miles on original engine! Wanting to 7.3l powerstroke conversion later.
HELP!!!

Same year 178k all good
190,000 on my 2004 5.4, no major issues. Runs great.
love your truck mines is a 2004 f 150 lariat 5.4 tri
@@curtisgore1611 my brochure for my 05’ 5.4 3v says 80% torque at 1000 rpm.
I just bought 04 , 5.4 has 160,miles I really love the truck. I'm getting strange vibrations when slowly excelerating or turnin.,
Just bought a 2004 Lariat. I like it but I can't read the odometer. I'm going to pull the instrument cluster and replace all the light bulbs. Then maybe I can deal with the check engine light. I drove 100 miles to get it home. It drove and ran pretty good.
That’s a beautiful, tough looking truck.
Thank you! I just bought one of these and know nothing about them so thank you!
Yes, my truck is the king ranch trim package. I will do a video on the seat back removal as it is rather simple 👍
@@JayThompson25 I mean, I've seen videos on how to do it, I just don't want to do it. I've gone 12 years so far without using the keypad.
Gen 1 front suspension is nearly bolt on too. I'm swapping gen 2 on my 2006 full front and rear.
You have a nice truck I have a question do you have a video on where to order and how do you install your electric fan
I got them from jegs and the install video is one of the first ever videos I ever posted on the channel!
Where did your get your headlights from I can’t find black headlights with the clear reflectors on the side
Got mine off of Amazon from DNA motoring but they’re only offering the amber reflectors right now. Not sure if they discontinued or just temporarily stopped production
@@JayThompson25 alright thanks can’t find any in black only in chrome looks like I’ll just have to get a switch back light for the front blinker only
Bud I got a 2007 Ford F-150 and just threw 35s on 18s with the rancho strut leveling kit it’s amazing ride. I actually did that because I saw your truck man. but would be pretty cool if you made a IG page to show off or let people show off their Ford F-150 builds
Man I might have to do that!! I appreciate the view and following along
I got a 2006 151,000 miles or so and still running strong! 💪
My 01 and 02 unlocks the same way. Also engine overheat protection system as well.
we have a 2007 5.4L with 310,000+ miles on it. no major issues. the oil pressure is just ever so slightly low now, but not worth an engine swap like a shop would tell you it needs. good gosh, maybe replace the oil pump first. maybe replace the tensioner pulley and serpentine belt first. don't get bent over the barrel when there are super cheap fixes you can do yourself.
What light bar do you have in the front?
It’s a 30 inch straight bar off of Amazon actually
Found out in my 2004 F150 Lariat 5.4 that it has a hidden feature for the gauge cluster when you hold the set up and reset button then putting the ignition to on II and clicking on those two again in order to work. To move to another one press reset again to show all of its lights and also its basically showing the sensors on how they are at the moment. My truck has 110,000 miles and still runs like new!
my 06 has 109k, i already rebuilt the front end when my belt tensioner broke 2 weeks later my computer went out but i still love my truck
Ive got an 05 5.4 with 147k miles, running great and I'm doing new exhaust and headlights tomorrow
And you just saved me 10 minutes from not watching the video! I also came here to look for 2004 info. Thank you!!
Loved everything but the trans and engine. Swap it and it has tons of potential. They look so cool

Got an 04 fx4 and just started with phaser noise at 190k. Same boat timing chain and phaser time.
Tried it in several Fords, all different codes of course and 3-4 will unlock the doors. Some may be code specific but some are not
Nice Truck Man. What electric fans did you install?
Flex-a-lite 270’s! Still going strong to this day
I bought my 2004 super crew for 3 grand put in a 'new' engine with 90k miles, new suspension, new spark plugs, and replaced all the transmission fluid (transmission has 320k miles and Goin strong). I love it, bought it for 3k, put in about 7k and it's borderline perfect, next is adding a turbo. Not sure if that's a good idea tho 😅
Do ya have the new oil pump? I feel like I need to replace that first.
My engine is completely stock internally, however I do plan down The road to do the timing job accompanied by the high volume oil pump replacement
I bought 05 recently had to put them in a fold and a brake line this weekend it's not a shit out on me is a truck jinxed or is it just need a little upkeep and going to be great I don't know I've had a bunch of explorers
my 2004 f150 was bought by my mom in 2005.(the year i was born) she drove it up untill i turned about 14 then handed it over to my older brother who was 16 at the time….. eventually it was my turn to start driving. as u expected i got the hand me down. it still runs great at fckin 300k miles on it
Where did you get your mirrors? And did they fit regularly or did you have to get some sort of an adapter?
I got them off of Amazon, they bolt right up for the 04-14 models, however the harness changed in 07 to allow them to be fully functional with the puddle lights. They fit but the controls may be backwards and the puddle lights may not work on a older model
You are a great host thanks for the information
I appreciate that!
I appreciate that wax job - well done
Gotta 05 xl with 4.6 it’s lil 2wd bubba build leveling kit 35x12.50 on 20x10 hostiles but it sadly burns oil and has a trans slip now but still no miss or check engine light but every now and then my over drive messes up and oil burning I’ve been told is most likely valve guides because under load don’t burn oil but at idle barley smokes and smoke after ab 15 minutes after running really bad but oil level hasn’t changed in 2 months🤷🏻♂️
