How is this even possible? Arpara 5k Micro OLED Review

  • Hello! Today we are taking a look at the Arpara 5k Micro Oled SteamVR tracked VR headset. This is the smallest production PCVR capable SteamVR tracked VR headset in the world currently. I actually really enjoyed my time with it, but it certainly has its flaws. It's hard to compare this to something like a Meta (Oculus) Quest 2, probably better to be compared to a Valve Index. In a lot of ways I could see something like this replacing my index if a lot of flaws were fixed.

      This headset is super interesting. I think if they fix the the issues it would be my first headset since the first rift. I don’t mind if they decide to add lighthouses to get to 360 tracking. I feel like if in out sensors are switched out for lighthouses then that is an excellent trade off if it keeps the size of the headset down.

    I really appreciate my eyes, so not only does it have to be fixed by not going out of focus; I say it should be fully automatic/motorized and nearly permanent when 100% focused. Otherwise, I can't see myself using it. Other then that It seem amazing. I would love to get one sometime in the future as this quite literally seems to be the future of VR.

    • @matthewblackwood9653
      @matthewblackwood9653 2 года назад +38

      Problem is, even that wouldn't work. At my optometrist they have a specialized machine that can measure your prescription automatically. It's still not 100% right. The doctor has to modify it to suit the individual person.
      If a highly specialized piece of medical equipment can't guess your prescription suitably, there's no way a VR headset is going to do it.

    • @Woogoo336
      @Woogoo336 2 года назад +25

      Probably not that kind of automatic, more realistically the focus would be motor controlled and adjusted by software with an app that has various visual tests so you can dial it in perfectly. No touching it with your hands, but still user set and controlled.

    • @ashlardarned2540
      @ashlardarned2540 2 года назад +15

      Agreed, if I'm going to buy a headset with vision adjustment, it has to be electronically controlled, and with the ability to plug a prescription into the settings and get it perfect.

    • @endrow9991
      @endrow9991 2 года назад +6

      Honestly I think its great you can dial in yourself, but it is really important to be aware that you should NOT dial in your current prescription, for example if you are -5 then you have to dial in -4 or so, because the panel is not projected too far from your eyes.

    • @evandelaalquarame4171
      @evandelaalquarame4171 2 года назад +6

      @@endrow9991 That's easy to handle by the software doing conversions in the background for user friendliness. For physical dials, move the markings accordingly. Plugging in the prescription as given is best if someone has theirs since otherwise it's more work for the end user and too confusing. You'd get people plugging in their prescription anyway or adjusting it in the wrong direction no matter how prominent the notice.

However if I didn't already own a car there's no way in hell I'd buy it, it's too outdated in too many ways now compared to when I bought it. I don't mind fixing it tbh, and got it for the cheapest kickstarter price so I'm probably going to be very happy. The only thing I would really really want changed is the option to shift the diopter while wearing the headset.
    Btw, how does the diopter work? Do the numbers on it match up with eye sight measurements or whatever? Or is it just trial and error? Like if you know your prescription then can you tune that is by looking at the numbers on the ring?
    Also, on the other mysterious headset you mentioned. Could we know if it's coming in the next 6 months or so? I think Arpara could be a good stop gap for many enthusiasts if this other headset is more than 6 months out.

    • @ReavoEnd
      @ReavoEnd 2 года назад +6

      Yep, that's how the diopter works... At least, in theory.
      In reality, the numbers are close enough together that it's difficult to know if you got it right, or if it's out by half a diopter or so. Also... Who knows if the diopter markings and lenses are really calibrated properly? They COULD be, but are they? Really didn't feel like it, in my experience.
      I tried just putting everything at my prescription 1:1, as precisely as I could visually manage. And yet it still felt off. After that point, I gave up on going by the numbers and just went by feel. If you try to do both eyes at once, seems like you can never get it right. When you do one eye at a time, you get the left eye to feel good, right eye, then open both and... It feels off still. Is it the left or the right that's off?
      It's really just such a pain! Lol.

    I just love how this Cat's channel's rather fairly balanced and unbiased! I've tuned in regularly checking in from time to time, especially simce I've been keeping a close watch on the whole VR market ever since DK1 back in Early 2013, and have dreamt of VR for years since I was just 10 or so years old!! I've been through all the various "phases" of VR.., Honeymoon-Periods, the akward 2 years of regularly Checking into VR Chat from 2019 on throughout the Pamdemic, and into the SUDDEN Blast of VR into the Mainstream, and Grudgingly sitting tight as Both Those Japanese Full Body trackers sold out in less than a Day before I could order a set as an alternative to the December of this year backorder I was placed on for SLime VR!! It's a major drag / bummer, though I appreciate this channel Helping point me into full body trackimg options that support blanket Occlusion over Steam Trackers, and my Hype for VR continues to grow each day as slowly more and more Exciting Developments take shape!! I feel if I could just get word of the upcoming 7000 Series Rayzen PC's or shoot, a 6000 Series Labtop this Summer to Upgrade my barely VR capable 8th_Gen-Intel I Core-7, Gtx-1060 Alienware Labtop, then I Could FiNaLly get situated towards a place I actually belong for a change!! Thanks for the full coverage of both Popular Brands as well as the lesser known VR tech!! I truly applaud that, since I was shy about being an Oculus ((now Meta)) user, thinking I'd be judged from the Valvle Index / Steam Folk in VRchat and what not, and this guy doesn't seem to wave a "Pepsi Only No Coke" type party flag!! He even admitted that RUclipsrs struggle with what viewers demand from the algorithm feedback, which caused him to make more Quest related content, and that sorta transparency is GOLDEN!! It warms my once little Emo-Kid's Black Heart and realize just how we're all Human, Connected in this new Digital Fromtier.., and not matter if We're Highly Viewed Public Fogures, or simple unknown Content Consumers, we all effectively shape and Influence each other in these Endeavors!! Something I've most longfully wished for, connectedness, which ia what VR had always intended to Originally set out to achieve..., like the good 'ol days of Playing Vanilla / BC World Of Warcrat with friends / online community clans!! Perhaps if VR gets mainstream enough, my dream of a WOW Classic Plus VR or Classic Kingdom Hearts Remake VR, or Hirez Studios's Paladins Hero Shooter in VR may someday come true!! …🤔 I’m not sure having the SMALLEST or LARGEST vr headsets is the way to go, for the same reason why companies like Apple always wanted to go with the SMALLEST laptop. Apple kept wanting to give us the smallest, thinnest things, and they would sell us a 3k laptop with no ports because it was too small to have ports🤣🙄🙄🙄 I don’t think it’s good that companies want to go to the extremes in terms of size, whether smallest, thinnest, lightest, largest…it ends up hurting the very product they’re making. A nice middle size is the way to go. You go with smallest, you end up with shit quality and screens, no ports ect, just like you wouldn’t want the largest due to weight. Again, Apple going with the “thinnest iPhone” just meant their product was so thin it bent in your pocket🤣 I feel like these are no brainers and yet companies still go for the extremes

Personally, as much as I love SteamVR lighthouse tracking with my +2.5yo Vive Pro (amoled screens, Etsy lens mod, and Index controllers) I do prefer inside-out tracking like with my Quest 2, esp. wireless PCVR with Air Link. Also, the thing most reviewers fail to mention is that other than Valve/Vive headsets, other so-called SteamVR headsets (like Pimax and Vario Aero), due to Valve licencing restrictions, cannot use the lighthouse Blue Tooth to power on/off the base stations, and maybe even the controllers. Hopefully this is something that will get sorted out eventually. Thanks again for your vids mate and cheers.
