I feel like its important to note that Beatrix is not a good person and that we're mostly supporting her for the sake of her child (which she doesn't know about) and because she is the protagonist. If the first movie were about O-ren you'd have rooted for her because of her tragic backstory but it wouldn't make O-ren a good person. Beatrix is just as much of a sociopathic murderer as the rest of them, she just wanted to get out of it because of her kid just like how copperhead left to start a family or how Bud left for a more quiet peaceful life or whatever. She isn't some paragon of goodness, her entire motivation is revenge, which was also Bill's motivation for shooting up her wedding rehearsal.
Also, Bill wasn't justifying his actions during his monologue to Beatrix, he was explaining to her that she should have seen this coming. She faked her death and assumed a new identity while being pregnant with his child and was about to marry another man. Bill knows that his reaction wasn't "okay", he's just saying that, with him being the leader of a group of assassins, his actions were very predictable and she could've easily avoided the whole scenario

Bill's speech about Superman is my favorite scene. The point is that Bill completely misunderstands Superman's character, in part to justify his own actions but also because he's an insane, cold-blooded killer. The whole point of Superman is that he has a TON of humanity due to how he was raised. But Bill only sees his power.

Right! Being born Kal-El means his nature is to have the super powers that he has, but being nurtured as Clark Kent is what truly shaped who Superman would be. Pai Mei told Beatrix at the beginning of the training that her hand belongs to him. So when she plucked Elle's eye, it was actually Pai Mei's revenge for his death, done by "his hand".
The actor who played Pai Mei is the same actor who played the bald bodyguard boss O-Ren-Ishii, the one in the mask she fought on the railing and cut off his leg.
In the chapter with Pai Mei, you could see that Beatrix was becoming his favorite student and that he appreciated her dedication. That's probably why she was the only person he taught the exploding heart technique to.
Otherwise, it's nice how you say at the beginning that Bill doesn't have a heart. Well, it would have been a nice twist at the end if Beatrix had used the exploding heart technique, and it did nothing. :)
It's also interesting that while Beatrix kills about 80 people in the first movie, she kills only one person in the second movie - Bill. Because Bud gets killed by a snake, and Elle probably does too (she's left to her fate, secluded away from people, blinded and in a small space with a poisonous snake). So the only one she kills personally is Bill.

The fear of being buried alive was an actual thing in history.
People used to have glass windows on caskets so if a person "woke up" prior to burial the funeral home employee would see them and stop the burial.
That is why in most states it is law an employee must remain on the premises at all times when there is a body at a funeral home waiting for services.
Then after burial there was a string ran from the decease'd wrist to a bell mounted over the grave to warn if the person "woke up".
People were hired to sit in the cemeteries overnight to listen for the bells and warn the authorities if they heard one.
That gave rise to the term "working there graveyard shift".

    • @jeremygilbert7989
      @jeremygilbert7989 Месяц назад +5

That's actually a myth. The term "Graveyard Shift" originates from the late 19th century when late night factory workers and miners would describe it as being like working in a graveyard due to how quiet and lonely it felt. Those caskets and bells did exist but they were rarely used and there's no evidence of them ever saving anyone. Being buried alive was a very real, albeit still rare, occurrence back in the day though. There have been incidents where a body was exhumed for whatever reason and scratch marks were found inside the casket. It's also speculated that this may be one of the original reasons for the tradition of the Wake; to give enough time before burial to make sure the deceased were, in fact, dead.

Hard to compare the two Kill Bills when they were originally intended to be one very long movie. Tarantino was forced to remake them into two.
    DISCUSSION POINTS:
The "Boss face-offs" got more personal as the 2 part movie moved forward. Budd gave us foreshadowing when he said to Beatrix "Here's for breaking my brother's heart." He didn't know that Beatrix would end up breaking his brother's heart for real.
Elle is angry that a loser like Budd got to take out a warrior like Beatrix. She used a black mamba to kill him. Since Black Mamba is Beatrix's code name, it is symbolic that Black Mamba killed Budd.
Elle was Bill's current love interest, but she knew that Bill had still loved Beatrix more. This fight was very personal. Beatrix lets Elle know that she isn't even worth the honor of death at the hands of a warrior. Perhaps the black mamba snake in the camper will do the honors?
Elle's code name was California Mountain Snake. This snake is not venomous. Ironically, poison and venom are the tools Elle liked to use. She tried to poison comatose Beatrix when Bill's phone call stopped her. She used the black mamba to kill Budd. She poisoned Pai Mei's food to kill him.
Also ironically, both the black mamba & California mountain snake are not vipers even though both code names belonged to The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. This shows us that both Beatrix and Elle had something in common. They were both Bill's lovers.

@@Brian-qn7fn I believe it was Weinstein that forced him to re-edit it into 2 movies due to the length.
      EDIT:
All it took was a web search for the answer. I cut and pasted it--
Why is kill bill two movies instead of one
Based on the provided search results, here’s a concise answer:
Kill Bill was originally conceived as a single film, but it was divided into two volumes due to its lengthy runtime and the pressure from the executive producer, Harvey Weinstein. The film’s runtime exceeded four hours, making it impractical for a single theatrical release.
Tarantino himself has acknowledged that the film was intended as one cohesive story, but the commercial constraints led to its segmentation into two volumes. In an interview, Tarantino stated that he wrote and edited Kill Bill as a single movie, but the editing process was influenced by Weinstein’s suggestion to split the film into two parts.

Pai Mei was beautifully written. You can tell he cared about Beatrix with the scene with the rice.
When he dumped her food on the ground he felt regret... Probably for the first time which is why he gave her his bowl. He had concern in his eyes as she tried and he was at peace when she succeeded. He cared about her which is why he taught her the exploding heart technique.

Very good movie. Fantastic acting and dialogue.
I might like it a bit more than Vol1, but together they tell a crazy/ incredible story.
    Pai Mei was hilarious.😂
The fight in the trailer is awesome.
When Bill arrived at the wedding rehearsal I wonder if he hadn't actually decided to kill everyone yet. Possibly not until she hilariously introduced him as her father? He seemed like that kind of lunatic. Just a thought.
Bill was a monster and got what he deserved. I'm so happy Beatrix Kiddo aka black mamba got to start a new life with her daughter. Had her daughter BB stayed with Bill she'd become a psychopath for sure as she had already intentionally killed her pet fish. You know what they say about people that hurt animals. Especially at a young age. Or maybe I'm just over thinking it. 😅

While it was long-winded, I found Bill's speech about Superman fascinating. As someone who's been into comics since I could read, he's really not wrong in what he points out. Superman's mask is appearing to be a weak, bumbling corporate man who is cowardly and doesn't really stand out. That's how he sees the average man - even if he fights to save them, he still looks down on them (which is also shown in some of the alternate Superman stories like Injustice or Red Son). For something's that's essentially a one-off just for a metaphor in this movie, it's surprisingly well thought out.
If you enjoyed the Pai Mei bits, you should REALLY watch some older kung fu movies - they really nailed the vibe, right down to the random face zooms. Some quick recommendations: Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Master of the Flying Guillotine.

Interesting point about the deadly vipers code names. All of them are venomous snakes, sidewinder, cottonmouth, copperhead, black mamba, EXCEPT Elle’s snake, the California mountain snake aka king snake. Interesting thing is, King snakes hunt and kill other snakes, venomous snakes included. Having the most treacherous character being named after a snake that is known for killing other snakes is a subtle stroke of genius.
Also worth noting, each of the snakes corresponds well to the style of each assassin. Bud, sidewinder, comes at you from odd and unanticipated angles. Cottonmouth have a very showy threat display and make themselves known and easily seen, just like O-Ren being the very public head of the Yakuza. Copperheads have incredible camouflage and can be very difficult to spot, just like Vernita hiding out living an unassuming suburban housewife’s life. Beatrix is deadly and aggressive with not much in the way of subtlety, just like her namesake Black Mamba.

If you watch the Beatrix vs Bill fight frame by frame, you can see she doesn't stand a chance against him. He's toying with her. Nobody could beat Bill with a sword. I think Pei Mei knew that and knew she might have to fight Bill one day so he taught her the five point palm exploding heart technique because Bill would never expect it and have no counter for it. It was the only way to beat Bill. Just goes to show how dangerous Bill was and why he acted like he thought he was invincible. Until she learned that, he basically was among his group.

It is said that all of Tarantino's movies exist within the same universe, and if you look hard enough you can find some sort of connection that ties one movie to at least one other in his filmography. I'm not sure if you've seen Django Unchained yet, but if not, there is a character in that movie named Dr. King Schultz. The grave that Beatrix Kiddo gets buried alive in is Paula Schultz. The theory is that Paula was either King's wife or related to him in some other way.

Absolutely love these 2 movies, but I feel people miss the point that Beatrix/the Bride is absolutely *not* a heroine. She's just as bad as every other Viper, we just follow *her* story. Orphaning Vernita's daughter and then straight up telling her "if you don't like it, do something about it" showcases how ruthlessly selfish her motivations are.
Budd is actually the ONLY Viper to show any semblance of regret for the life he led, and that's why he's the only one that actually beats Beatrix. O-Ren celebrates becoming a criminal warlord, Vernita enjoys her suburban lifestyle, Bill gets to play daddy with BB, and Elle is still a gun for hire. Budd is the only one that chooses to live in the middle of nowhere, as a bum, working a dead-end job where he's constantly belittled and abused. He's not running from consequences and living a lie, he knows what he is and what he deserves. That's also why he gets killed the moment he tries to make it big after beating Beatrix - he forgot his penance and was punished for it.

You got way too involved in this emotionally. They are both killers and evil people that have done so much worse to others. The things they do to each other is completely justifiable due to the fact that they are all evil bastards. The ONLY innocent is the little girl. You can't just ignore what Beatrix has done her entire life and pretend she didn't deserve these things due to what she has done. Bill, while just as evil and deserving of death, did not create her. You may notice that she had killing skills and had already worked in this field before Bill took her to Pei. She told us this through Pei.
So while, I understand your indignation against Bill, it is not justice or morality. They were dead from the first time they killed others for money. "Honor among thieves."

And I love the way he has the same actors play multiple roles (the sheriff at the chapel was the pimp who told her where Bill was, Gordon Liu was Pai Mei as well as the head of the crazy 88). I had to laugh when you said that you couldn’t take your eyes off Pai Mei’s eyebrows because his name literally means “white eyebrow” and he was based on a real Kung fu master with that nickname. And yes, when you have a beard stroking it does become a pleasant habit.
