You have to remember that from the perspective of the great houses, Paul formed an army with a bunch of savages (the Fremen) and performed a military coup for the throne. If Paul had gone to the Landsraad and presented his case they may have formed a coalition with him but he went with a complete power move that bypassed any semblance of government that existed. This was basically Julius Caesar coming back with the Thirteenth Army to Rome and installing himself as Emperor removing power from the senate.

Too bad CHOAM wasn't a part of the movies because a lot of Great Houses had a huge financial stake in sticking with the emperor which makes more sense in reality. Like Octavian keeping control of Rome and in the end getting the supporters of Marcus Antonius to turn against him before the battle of Actium.

Except Julius was a known and popular man. A lot of people welcomed him, which is why his death wasn't enough to return things to the way they were. The conspirators failed to recognize how popular he was and how the people would turn against them. While Leto was popular, Paul was but a child and he had adopted a whole new persona. So, even if people knew he was Paul Atreides, he was a complete outsider to them and a usurper to the throne.

And further to this, The emperor only maintains power above the Landsraad due to the Sardurkar, a massive chunk of which of which were wiped out in this battle. So, less of a reason to officially give Paul the position. Denying official endorsement may delay/prevent his ability to command and deploy the remaining Sardurkar against the Landsraad.

That's why in the movie's version of events, marrying Irulan doesn't make any sense. If you're going to impose yourself as the new ruler by the means of power, you don't need any political marriage to legitimize your ascendency. He could stick with Chani and avoid further drama. That's what happens when your try to deviate too much from the book plot, things stop making sense.

Paul remembers the lesson Gurney taught him while sparring in Dune Part 1: "I have you", "Aye, but look down my lord, you would have joined me in death". He directed Feyd's blade into his own shoulder to distract him for an instant and deliver the killing blow under Feyd's ribs with the forgotten knife.

I don't know how to explain it properly, but I really wish they'd done a better job of visually communicating that concept. Like, after you have a think about it, it's obvious, but the nature of how it played out on screen felt confusing. It didn't have to be an exaggerated affair or anything, but maybe a wide shot with a nod to the choreography from part 1.
A wide shot might have been less intimate/intense than the tight framing we were shown, so who knows. It just took me out of the moment slightly when I saw it live, but maybe I'm alone on that.

She decided to have a son for love to Duke Leto, and she decided to train him in the ways of the Benne Gesserit against their will.

At the beginning, out in the desert, the sky is orange, and we can see a partial lunar eclipse. Arrakis has two moons. One of the "making" of features on the Blu-ray details that they did have a partial Lunar eclipse, here on Earth, filming in Jordan, or United Arab Emirates, both used for the desert filming for Arrakis. Much of the rock-locations, I believe are in Jordan. It's a now famous region, where "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Martian" and "SW 9: Rise of Skywalker" filmed too. The one flash-vision of the future, where sister Alia stands on dunes near an ocean, were filmed in Namibia.🌍

    - 36:57 - Yes, Jessica is the daughter of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. However, it gets weirder than that! In the later books written by Frank Herbert's son, Brian, we learn that Jessica's mother was Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, who tested Paul with the box. In the book, the Baron is gay, VERY gay, and psychotic like Feyd. In fact, he is extremely vain about his looks as well. Mohiam is sent to secure the bloodline. However, in the attempt the Baron has some problems and ends up sexually assaulting Mohiam. Unfortunately, the embryo was nonviable, and Mohiam had to go back and resecure the bloodline. When she does, she gives the Baron a nasty surprise. As the Bene Gesserit are trained to have the most minute control over every facet of their biology, which is how they can drink the Water of Life and survive, Mohiam uses this ability to create a very special STD for the Baron, which is why is is so grotesquely obese and has to use an anti-gravity suspensor to move around. His bones are so brittle they cannot support his weight.
    - Chani is different in the novel. She fully supports and believes in Paul as LIsan al Gaib and Mahdi, and continues to love him. The also cut a tremendously tragic part of the story. From when Paul and Jessica escape into the desert to Paul defeating the Emperor, about two years pass give or take. Paul's sister Alia is born with all of the knowledge of a full Reverend Mother. And Chani and Paul have a son named Leto II. Unfortunately, the young Leto is killed during a Sardaukar raid. When Paul overthrows the Emperor takes Princess Irulan as his bride, Chani knew. She didn't like it, but understood it. The final paragraph of the novel is Jessica comforting Chani, helping her realize that Irulan may have Paul's name...but only that. Irulan will have no children, no softness, no affection, nothing. Jessica says, "...we who bear the title of concubine, history will call us wives."
Paul is not a hero. He is, at best, an antihero and, at worst, a villain in a story filled with villains. Frank Herbert deliberately wrote the Dune novels to explain the dangers of charismatic leaders.

Not to mention that such friction will be very instrumental in later sequels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.

Small detail I think some people miss is that after Paul declares that he wants revenge and wants to use the prophecy to manipulate the fremen for that goal. He immediately after gets a vision of people worshiping a shrine of his father. It's a call back to the first film where Paul had the vision in the tent where he saw people killing and dying I. His name and worshipping a shrine for his father. So I believe in this moment Paul has a change of heart, wishing (at this point in the film) to avoid this outcome. So that's why I think in the first parts of the movie he doesn't like his mother converting and manipulating the fremen, even though in the beginning he said he would do as much.

    • @donny1960
      @donny1960 20 дней назад +2

I agree. Paul at the end of the book and movie is a reluctant warrior. He knows what letting the Fremen lose will do to the Empire. But is resigned to it as the only way to continue the Human Race. He sees that the Bene Gesserit put mankind on a path to obliteration when they created "The One". Hard decisions had to be made to save everyone. It eventually fell to Paul's son to undo the Bene Gesserit mistake. Dune is very complicated. It is not just the "good guys" against the "bad guys". We all can be both at a given time.

  • @WhiteWolfDarkpaw

The Fremen wouldn't open fire on the Crawler with the shielded Ornithopters flying around because of the effect of the two intersecting; both devices exploding in a pseudo-nuclear explosion. Same with the Fremen Hunting squad we opened with.
Riding the Worm involves getting a hook under the front end of a segment and lifting it up, causing it to become exposed to the harsh sand. That keeps the worm from attempting to submerge, and from simply plowing through dune after dune.
Paul DID want to use the Fremen prophecy to enact his revenge, I assume with the excuse that he's helping THEM get rid of their mutual hated enemy. But I think after he realized what Jessica was doing, he tried to reel back. He still wanted revenge, he still wanted to help the Fremen get rid of the Harkonnen, but he saw where the tide was going. Only after he drank the Water of Life did he realize it was too late to stop.
Regarding nukes: It's never mentioned in the movies, but there is a strict mandate that Atomics are never used against human targets. Breaking this means all the Great Houses and Sardaukar surround your planet and utterly destroy you.
Using the atomics against the Shield Wall to let the storm and worms in, though, absolutely counts as fair.

To the question you've ask in the end:
The real power in the Universe is not the Emperor, but the Spacing guild. That's the guild that Baron used to send his troops to attack Atreidis, for example. And the Spacing guild doesn't won't to share power with a guy who took over the Emperor, which was a very suitable ruler for them. They want to take the control back. At least that's what I understood after reading, don't give me spoilers in the replies please 😂❤

I voted for you to watch this in theatre because I just couldn't live with myself for depriving you of that experience. But now.... selfishly... I am ecstatic we get to watch you experiencing this for the first time. You should really consider reading the first three books (all I've read) as they are epic. I read them as an adolescent in the eighties and I remain firmly convinced they are the LOTR of science-fiction. I've recently downloaded the first SIX books and have just started to read them. Let's GO!!!
@6:33 Per the books you can't use shields in the desert because they attract the worms and "drive them into a killing frenzy." I think this may have been stated in the first movie as well.
@21:10 "You can't control this thing" - In the books it is explained that the hooks pull the worms' segments open exposing sensitive tissues to the sand. So, the worms turn the open segments up away from the sand, allowing you to steer them.

In the books, Paul was able to know the desert and survive on his own without any help. He also needed no help to survive the worm poison/water of life and become the Kwisatz Haderach. They added that quality to make Chani more relevant, and to play down how Paul was superior in a way that would be about the most Mary Sue character ever written. Paul almost never fails.

  • @SunsetRogue
    @SunsetRogue 20 дней назад +5

Great reaction, guys! Being unfamiliar with the books, you really picked up on a lot of things. You are absolutely right in thinking the holy war would have started without Paul’s further help. If Paul had died, the zealots among the Fremen still would’ve pushed on and made dead Paul a sacred martyr for their cause.
Both movies were audiovisual feasts. I enjoyed them as entertainment alone. At the same time, they deviated significantly (particularly Part Two) from the novel. Denis Villeneuve simplified several things to black and white and took out some nuance and moral ambiguity: the rich shades of grey in the novel. Some changes and omissions are understandably unavoidable when adapting a book into a visual medium limited by time constraints, but Villeneuve made changes that contradict what Frank Herbert wrote.
Part Two changed the nature of Chani and distorted the character of Jessica and the Bene Gesserit. Princess Irulan was not Reverend Mother Mohiam’s best student. In the books, Irulan was a failed Bene Gesserit who aspired to be a historian. She was turned into a brilliant strategist who the Emperor relies on for advice. The Emperor in the book was no dummy. He was clever. And he wasn’t a worn-out frail man, either.
The Fremen are a very religious tribe and share similarities with real-world counterparts like the Jewish and Muslim peoples. They have varying levels of belief, yet none of them dismiss prophecy and the coming of the Lisan al Gaib. Some don’t think Paul is the messiah, but they do believe in a messiah. Also, they are not aware of the Bene Gesserit’s secret use of religious propaganda on Arrakis. The B.G. are accomplished manipulators and influence events from the shadows. Their goals are hidden, not common knowledge to people outside their order.
Chani in the book was a believer and understood Paul. To make her and some of the other Fremen both atheists and completely aware of B.G. manipulation is the opposite of how the Fremen were characterized by their creator. The change panders to current popular cultural trends and disregards the book’s political setting.
It also seems that Villeneuve enlarged the supporting roles of Chani and Irulan to give Zendaya and Florence Pugh more to do. The actors didn’t serve their characters-the characters were altered to serve the star power of two actors.
The B.G. are puppet masters in the series, but they are not completely amoral as depicted in the movie. They often use ruthless means to accomplish goals that would actually benefit humanity in the long run. It made no sense for Denis Villeneuve to have the B.G. plot to have all the Atreides killed (not found anywhere in the novel; they weren’t even involved in the Emperor’s conspiracy). They wanted to preserve all the bloodlines of the breeding program they took centuries to carefully develop, not destroy one of them.
Part Two also contradicts the fact that Mohiam specifically asked the Baron to spare Paul’s life in Part One, since Paul would be the last Atreides left during the invasion of Arrakeen. Then, in the second movie, she does a 180 and claims she wanted Paul and his line exterminated all along. Even if the B.G. couldn’t control Paul, his life (the genetic inheritance it contained) was still valuable to them, in keeping with their behavior in the book.
Another thing: the Emperor didn’t view Duke Leto Atreides as a weak man in the book. On the contrary, he admired Paul’s father. He was aware that the Duke inspired loyalty among his people and was liked by many of the Great Houses. He knew House Atreides’ military forces had become strong enough to rival his Sardaukar. This development, along with the Duke’s qualities as a popular leader, meant the Atreides were a potential threat to his rule. The Emperor personally liked the Duke to the extent that he once told his daughter, Irulan, that the Duke was worthy enough to be her husband, but she wasn’t old enough to marry at that time. Political necessity made the Duke an enemy and the Emperor acted out of self-preservation.
If the Duke were truly a weak man/weak leader as the Emperor said in the movie, then there would be no need to destroy House Atreides because a weak leader would not be a real threat in the first place.
The feeling I got after watching Part One and especially Part Two is that Villeneuve didn’t really understand the story and the characters as much as he claims. He also promoted this recent false narrative that Herbert only wrote Dune Messiah after he realized readers misunderstood Paul in the first book, viewing him as a traditional hero. Herbert actually had parts of the second and third books written before the first one was completed. Paul’s character trajectory was laid out from the beginning. Herbert intended for his readers to fall under Paul’s spell just as the Fremen did. The second book would show how big a mistake following such a charismatic leader would be.

Also, Paul knew that he was going to get stabbed and plunge his into his heart. They showed the vision in a scene before the battle started.
