      @TruthWiz I think they did as to not piss of the female audience, to reflect todays thinking about relationship. Remember Chani's speech about equality, but there are no female leaders, because only the strongest warriors can lead and when Paul reach Sietch Tabr, he's given the option to take as his own Jamis's wife and kids...some women would veiw this as sexist so they kept it out of the movie.

      @@Forty_six_and_two The funny thing is, in the book when Paul and Jessica meet the Fremen for the first time and Jessica defeats Stilgar using the Bene Gesserit martial art in order to show that she could be useful to the Fremen by teaching them how to fight the Bene Gesserit way, Stilgar suggests she replace the Reverend Mother because that's the only way the two of them could cohexist without her becoming his wife. Otherwise, the tribe would expect for her to challenge him, kill him and take his place as the leader of the tribe.
      That is: in the book there is no prohibition for a woman to lead the tribe and Herbert made perfectly clear that the Fremen would accept a female leader if she ascended according to their traditional rules of succession.
      In some way, the book was more in tune with modern sensibilities than the movie gives it credit for.
      About Paul marrying Irulan, the book makes it very clear that it's just a political marriage meant to cement Paul's ascendency by respecting tradition. Marriage as a political "resource" is so accepted and ingrained in the setting that concubinage is considered perfectly normal. Nobody in the Dune universe expects that a noble would necessarily marry his/her love interest and so they provide for feelings to be taken care of by allowing rulers to have their significant others at their side as concubines.
      Children born from concubines can also inherit the title of the ruler as proved by Paul (Jessica never married Duke Leto because Leto could use the prospect of marrying as a political lever in negotiations).
      It makes sense in the context of the setting.

      @@Forty_six_and_two that’s not why they changed her. denis says he wanted her to be skeptical as a way to remind the audience to be skeptical and weary of what paul is doing/becoming. frank herbert didn’t write paul as a hero or a good guy, and if you’ve read the books-after dune 2s timeline-paul and the fremen cause a lot of chaos across the galaxy. he knew the audience would be on paul’s side which is not what the author wanted. movie chani fits frank’s original intention a lot more than the book. the changes in the movie give the audience context, especially for those who aren’t familiar with the story, and imo keeps it from being too linear.

    • @red.4712

      @TruthWiz having an opposition and split in the fremen actually better conveys the intention of the author better than the original text does. That's why the director did it so.

    The women of the Bene Gesserit order have as close to total control of their body as it is possible to get. They can move each muscle individually as well as regulate each gland and even store infections and other pathogens safely and use them as weapons on command. Releasing an egg when needed and not haveing a menstral cycle are probably novice teachings.

    Great reaction video ladies. Although Paul’s journey was interesting to watch, keep in mind Paul and his family are members of Royalty. That’s why he married. The emperor’s daughter. It was a political move. Also, the Author wrote Dune as a warning against charismatic leaders. Which is Paul. Even though we are warn because of Paul’s actions billions of people will die. Chani was really the moral compass of this movie. She believed one of her own people should liberate her people, not an outsider.

    So far, Denis Villeneuve is advancing what is possible within science fiction cinema. Because of the Butlerian Jihad, the Dune universe does not have computers or thinking machines, so there's an analog sensibility to all of their technology. Space travel only occurs because navigators use spice like a drug to foresee successful routes when travelling through folded space. Body shielding tech renders firearms mostly useless so everyone trains with blades for their combat. But those shields cannot be used in the deserts of Arrakis because it causes the giant worms to go into a frenzy. It's a very lush, detailed universe that truly goes off the rails by the time you reach the reign of Paul's son. This is science fiction for grownups, and I can't wait to see how far they take it. Great reaction!

    In the book, Chani was well aware of the arrangement to marry the Emperor's daughter, and knew it was political. She stayed with him and basically ruled the Empire. And the "wife" got moved to secretary, and historian writing his books. Princess Irulan got absolutely no love, or affection, or shared a bed with Paul Atreides. The director choose in the movie to make Chani not accept this, so that it makes it easier to transition into Dune- Messiah. Which builds out more characters, and MORE intrigue. There is a big time jump, about 12 years I believe in the book. But Alia Atreides, his sister, will be running the day to day things of the Empire.

    • @technofilejr3401
      @technofilejr3401 5 месяцев назад

      There is a funny scene from the second Dune book. Princess Irulan comes to Paul to demand her rights as a wife.
      Paul just looks at her and says “Irulan you were picked to play a role. You know who my real wife is”. Irulan storms out in a huff because she knows she can’t control Paul through The Voice or feminine wiles. As soon as she leaves Chani comes in with two cups of coffee like “Homegirl still tripping on the marriage baby”. She then gives Paul a back rub while he sips his coffee.
      It’s good to be the Emperor.

If anything, being vague gives google all the leverage and power to enforce whatever the hell they want. Otherwise you will have rule breakers everywhere and they will just abuse the rules by skirting around it to avoid banned or getting sued by Google for breaking rules.

    Interesting reaction. The author wrote Dune to warn us about following charismatic leaders and the dangers of organizied religions. Both were made clear in the book and the movie but some people still rooted for Paul. Paul is from royalty. Trained by his father to rule over people and his mother to understand different cultures and their beliefs so they can better control them.. So it's not a coincidence he understood Freman language and customs. The moral compass in this movie was Chani. She fought for her people not for Paul. She believed if there was a Messiah it should come from her people not a white savior. But the movie does show that even today people will still cheer and follow leaders who tell them what they want to hear. Paul is not a hero and because of his actions billions of people will die from war and famine because Paul cut of spice to the other planets that don't bow to him.

  • @stigmatoxin1310
    @stigmatoxin1310 5 месяцев назад +1

    one old criticism about Dune is the notion that it is a white savior narrative, when in fact, its a critique on the idea of saviors as a whole. the books as a whole are a critique on the idea of putting all your stock on political/religious/influential figures. they are all flawed or straight up corrupt. even Duke Leto in the books wasnt 100% perfect because at the end of the day, he wanted to use the Fremen for the sake of "desert power," to have an edge against his enemies.
    Paul Atreides (and his future son) is the culmination of that corruption. he is the product of eugenics and he has Harkonnen in his heritage. the movie doesnt really cover this detail, but the Bene Gesserit dont necessarily want to use Paul to save humanity. they primarily want to use him as a tool to control the course of humanity, to lead it into a direction of their choosing for the sake of control and planning.
    as for Paul himself, when he sees visions of the future, he sees how destructive his existence is to the Imperium as a whole. he sees that if he rises to power via Fremen faith, he will be responsible for terrible things, a holy war in his name that will snuff out billions of innocent lives. he knows this, and he's terrified of it. that's why he's so hesitant to become That Guy to the Fremen, especially considering that the myth of That Guy was manufactured by the Bene Gesserit. but when push comes to shove, he cant protect those he cares about without becoming That Guy. that's why he chooses to become That Guy. and because Paul has embraced his role, he essentially converted an entire race of people into religious zealots. this is what Chani feared. because the Fremen now blindly follow Paul because of his (albeit true) promises of a better life for Arrakis as a whole, theyve effectively lost their ability to self-determine. they arent their own people anymore.
    if Denis adapts Dune Messiah, the second book in the series, you'll definitely see how devastating the aftermath is...

      The Harkonnens are a truly twisted and tragic family. Their original sire Xavier Harkonnen was one of the commanders in the Butlerian Jihad - the war against Thinking Machines. It was the death of his son Manion that sparked the war.
      However, due to a following out with Vorian Atreides another leader in the war and a good friend, his family fell from grace. Over time his descendants on Giedi Prime became amoral and power hungry.

    The reason women were the only one's who could become reverand mothers is actually really interesting in the lore. It's not about the pain (not entirely) but whose memories you're getting. Reverand Mothers gain access to their entire female line of memories. As opposed to Paul who could take the whole package. To be clear, they CAN access the memories, but the experience would kill them. I may be miss remembering here, but I've heard difference described as fighting against a raging river (the female half) vs being eating by a thousand hungry wolves (the male half). Though that might have been Wheel of Time...

    "All the bad Guys are gone" you said. :) That's not the case. Paul has become the bad guy. Billions on innocents will die in his holy war. The Fremen have become the Universes Taliban. That's what he saw. That's why he was so reluctant to go south and claim the title of Messiah. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. He knew. ;) He will try to curb the atrocities, but to almost no effect. The Fremen are religious fanatics now. There are no happy endings.

    The resistance against the Lisan al Ghaib mythology among Chani and her friends mirrors the message Frank Herbert meant to convey with the book, which was essentially that people should be very careful with messianic leaders. "You tell them a Messiah is coming, then they wait", says Chani. As opposed to fighting the oppressor themselves now, is the implication. So her fear is that the pious waiting is holding the Fremen back from winning back their freedom. (Though I guess there's some anti-colonial sentiment as well, what with the myth coming from off world). Denis Villeneuve changed Chani's arc a bit from the book, supposedly to have her carry Herbert's message. But for me it all gets a bit muddled at the end of the movie. I mean, what do you call a man-made myth that comes true? And does it make any difference any more?

    I also haven’t finished it yet, but do they understand that Paul isn’t a good person just because he is the main character, right?

    • @Mistmantle88
      @Mistmantle88 5 месяцев назад +1

      Paul was a good person. Paul is dead. The Kwisatz Haderach has arisen in his place and is ALL the ancestors, any of whose personalities could possess him at any time. The same is true of Jessica…she is now ALL the Reverend Mothers that came before her. He’s no
      longer talking to her, he’s talking to all of them.

    23:57 Despite what the subtitles may say don’t be so sure those are women. From the books the Baron prefers his scantily clad personal assistants to be young and masculine. The director has tried to soften how big of a freak the Baron is from a sexual standpoint.
    He enjoys abusing the people around him including family members. Its heavily implied that he abused Feyd. He also has fantasies about doing vile things to Paul.

    I love this movie; saw it 3 x's in theater. There were only two pieces I didn't like: Irulan's narrations and Alia as an adult.

    it was perfectly cast... except for the emperor... in the books he was described as a 70ish year old man in the body of a 30 year old man, due to his excessive spice consumption.

    Paul is not fearful except for possible loss of Chani, because she does not believe in the prophesy, because is not religious. She believes Freyman must rule its own people. Paul knows if he doesn’t rule the Emperor, then he cannot save. … interesting how you two hosts are so supportive of Paul and not Chani… interesting ladies… you drank the KoolAid!

    I just want to see one damn video on how they get off the worms.

    • @skiziskin
      @skiziskin 5 месяцев назад +1

      The hooks are used to pull open the gap between the segments on the worm. The inner tissue is sensitive to the sand so the worm rotates to keep it up out of the sand. When they want to get off, they just let go with the hooks and the worm dives, leaving them on the surface.
