I think my favorite part about this song is how Shintaro is just so wrong. He believes she killed herself because she was suffering even more then he was, but she hid it through a smile. But as he is about most things non-academic, he is completely wrong as Ayano wasn't suffering, nor did she kill herself as an escape. She in fact was enjoying life especially with him, but as the songs prove, she killed herself to protect her family and him, as proven in Ayano's Theory of Happiness. The crane at the end is to symbolize that she wasn't suffering and that she loves him even now, as proven by Additional Memory.
I know this comment is old but Kano also made this guilt even worse. Crying to Shintaro “This is all your fault!” while looking like Ayano. Shin was always rude to her, even though she always stuck by his side. So not only have his best friends died, one straight up told him she was going to do it BECAUSE of him, to his knowledge. This song breaks my heart 😭 (info from novel 5 if I’m not mistaken)
I never really liked Shintaro's character until I found out his back story. Like, so many animes have a nerdy otaku as the protagonist without much thought, but Kagerou Project makes it so much deeper than that. Shintaro was scared of getting too close to someone again, so he locked himself away in his room and submerged himself into nonreality to distract his mind from Ayano's death.

I think you should go an educate yourself about mental health and suicide in general. Seriously. If you think people want to commit suicide just for attention, you clearly have no idea what drives people over the edge. Their problems and reasons could be the exact same as Shintaro's. You can't dismiss "other people" simply because they aren't in an anime that you can watch on a screen.
I guess but not always, not all people are good at hiding even if they suffered a lot, and some people like my friend is just the happy type that just smiles all the time but they didn't suffer from anyhing but it's true most people that smile suffered a lot.

She ends up being depressed and Shintaro was the one who protected her. It's pretty sad how much he had to suffer and I'm not surprised that he committed suicide in xxx timeline...

This comment is long overdue but I remember when you first posted this Juby!! All the way back when the kagepro fandom was just starting and was much smaller, before we knew the whole story. From the beginning, I’ve always loved Shintaro and Ayano’s story the most because of how human it is. In a world full of magic and powers, their time together was so ordinary and “normal” you know? Just two lonely kids who met without expecting to become so important to each other. Toumei Answer will always be one of my favorite songs and MVs in the series no matter how heartbreaking it is because of how simple and vulnerable the emotions are - both the small joys and the deep sadness. This was one of the best and only covers of the song way back then, and I replayed this SO MUCH. I love how you expressed the meaning of the song so well in your lyrics and the emotion in your voice throughout the whole song ; A ; it never fails to get me weepy-eyed and now, 7 years later, I still come back every once in a while to listen again. What you guys don't know is that not only did Shintaro lose Ayano to suicide that day, but he lost his best friend Haruka too. What's mentioned in the novel that isn't portrayed in the songs or manga is that Shintaro was SUPER close to Haruka and when he found out that both of his closest companions died, it basically broke him. . . . SPOILER What bit of hope he had left was shattered by Kano when he posed as Ayano a bit after she died (before Shintaro found out about her death) and basically blamed him for never noticing anything. That's why he blames himself.
For somebody who isn't the biggest fan of Juby's voice, I actually do think this sounds a lot better than the original. I like how it sounds lower pitched.

Ok after watching the Anime I get it now. She was getting an array of different grades because half the time it was actually Kano... And that's why she (he) was always smiling when the bad grades came back. And that's why she was happy, not sad. He saw her crying because her mom died and she figured out what was going on with her dad. Now I understand. (It actually makes the song a bit less sad)

What you guys don't know is that not only did Shintaro lose Ayano to suicide that day, but he lost his best friend Haruka too. What's mentioned in the novel that isn't portrayed in the songs or manga is that Shintaro was SUPER close to Haruka and when he found out that both of his closest companions died, it basically broke him.

What bit of hope he had left was shattered by Kano when he posed as Ayano a bit after she died (before Shintaro found out about her death) and basically blamed him for never noticing anything. That's why he blames himself.

Ok after watching the Anime I get it now. She was getting an array of different grades because half the time it was actually Kano... And that's why she (he) was always smiling when the bad grades came back. And that's why she was happy, not sad. He saw her crying because her mom died and she figured out what was going on with her dad. Now I understand. (It actually makes the song a bit less sad)
I dunno, I'm pretty sure that this was about his point of view from before and after her suicide, which explains the flowers at her desk. And the parts showing her crying were flashbacks
