This album is among my collection, haven't played it for a while but it is still good.
Other tunes with his keyboard skills to try are "Going For The One" with Yes & "Temperament of Mind" ( an amazing solo performance) when he was with The Strawbs.

As a young teenager, this album blew my mind. Now after all these years, it still impresses me, and I still love it, but can see its weaknesses as well as its strengths. I've never really was able to figure out what each piece had to do with each wife's story, and assume the titles were an afterthought (although a good argument can made that this piece is at least an exception). Still, I wish Wakeman had done more music along these lines, rather than the direction he later took as a solo artist (his post Journey To The Center Of The Earth albums always disappointed me, which may say more about MY tastes than it does HIS artistry). I really liked his work on Tales Of Topograghic Oceans, and had great respect for him for doing such great work on an album he apparently did not enjoy. His best work IMO is on Going For The One, which is simply transcendent, and gives me goosebumps to this day. So enjoyed your exploring this side of Wakeman's work.

The hymn is one of Rick's favourites and he had learned it as a child and would often play it on the piano at the end of the day. Rick is a devout Christian and was steeped in English church music. He even did a whole album on the organ at Lincoln Cathedral. He used to do regular solo gigs in local churches as a fundraiser and would even include his own religious testimony; being a brilliant storyteller he made it fun as well as serious. There was always plenty of music.

Justin really appreciated you doing this album. This is my favorite track. When I was young and impressionable this album blew me away. I enjoy it to this day. I was able to see Mr. Wakeman live down here in S. Fla last year. He is special. He has tons and tons of albums...some fantastic...some not so much. Myths is your next venture...I do like Journey as well.

I always enjoy this piece, and marvel about how many keyboards Rick uses, in multiple layers. And yet, it remains open and flowing, despite all the keyboards. Rick has said in an interview that his favorite keyboard is the piano, and it's clear that this work is entirely based on it, from beginning to end.

Afternoon Justin. Dave from London, with Friday (13th) On My Mind. More inspired and cohesive - yes, you're spot on. Some of the other tracks are what a friend of mine would call car crash music. But this one really flows, and I particularly like his acoustic playing, with plenty of those trills in his runs that are trademark Rick. And a really tasteful use of the hymn at the end after Anne gets the Henry treatment!

Consider doing the Live version of the album, performed in front of Hampton Court Palace on the 500 anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne with a band, full orchestra and choir.

Good feature in the new MOJO Magazine on Wakeman and that period precisely - his first three albums - told by him and his fellow musicians. I think Dave Cousins (Strawbs) nails it when he says that by the time of his overblown King Arthur On Ice, he'd brought prog into the Ridiculous, and took some pride in it too! I hadn't listened to Six Wives probably since the late 70's, it certainly has its moments. But i still think his best work is with other bands and musicians - with Yes, of course, but with Bowie, Cat Stevens, The Strawbs. I don't think you ever did the Strawbs, who also featured Sandy Denny early on. If you're curious, check out A Glimpse of Heaven (with Wakeman) or, for peak Strawbs, Autumn, from Hero & Heroine.

This album is the clear choice to hand to a Yes fan who wants to see what Rick came up with on its own. The keyboard textures are the same as would appear on Fragile and Close to the Edge (the exact same instruments for the most part, in fact). I also think this album is Rick's strongest in terms of writing and arranging. The melodies are strong, there's a strong backbone to each track, and overall everything gels nicely.

Probably my second favourite track after Catherine Howard, which you didn't rate. But like you say it is busy. The piano is exquisite. The piano piece tacked on the end is actually the old church hymn The day thou gave us lord is ended. Obviously marking Anne's demise. That title doesn't apply to the track as a whole.
Anne was a fiery and sparky creature, who spent a long time at the French court, so was up to date with the latest fashions of her time. Henry was desperate to bed her, he'd been married to Catherine of Aragon for over 20 years, and she'd failed to deliver him a son. The Church wouldn't grant him a divorce, so H. Took the momentous step of breaking away from Rome and setting up his own Church of England, with himself as boss. He could make his own rules. The monarch is still head of the C. Of E. to this day. Being away from Rome meant that a future monarch could make it protestant rather than Catholic. That happened and unleashed a whole new set of problems.
Anne did produce a child for Henry. Unfortunately it was a daughter, not a son, a factor that significantly contributed to her downfall. The girl eventually became Elizabeth I. One of our most celebrated Queens
You haven't mentioned the cover art, a photo of Rick in Madam Tussauds wax museum in London, next to the Henrican display, surrounded by all his wives. Rick got the OK to do it after the public had gone. I think there is a politician in the background which Rick has said he wished was elsewhere. It might be Enoch Powell, I'm not sure if that is right though.
Great track. Nice to hear it again.

That last little bit at the end there, 'The Day Thou Gavest Lord Hath Ended', is a traditional hymn. As to Queen Anne Boleyn herself, Henry moved Heaven and Earth--you see what I did there?😉--to get the marriage to his first wife annulled. When he asked permission from the Pope to annul it, the Pontiff basically told him to, "Go to Hell." This led to the king breaking from the Roman Catholic Church and forming the Church of England. Now Henry was free to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. When the queen failed to produce a male heir for the king, he was none too pleased. He began to lose interest in her and had her confined to the Tower of London on trumped up charges of adultery. He then began to take an interest in Jane Seymour and he eventually had Anne beheaded and married Jane only two weeks after her execution. That's one way to end an marriage! I thought throughout the album Rick Wakeman did a great job capturing the personalities of the six wives through music. This was Rick's masterpiece for sure. Happy to see you're enjoying it, Justin. One more track to go.

Anne had the unfortunate habit of losing her head. Henry the VIII was a glutton in all things. This has a more 'prog' feel in its development. Always like this cut.

Rick was always cutting-edge on synth sounds, so whenever he uses synth sounds, they were revolutionary and new when Rick introduced them. Of course, as time passed, he started switching to newer, different synth sounds which at times caused his albums to completely lose their magic (and now sound totally dated). The reason so many of his early albums are good are because the electronic sounds are so unusual and "lost to time," as modern equipment does not replicate that sound. As time progressed, only the piano and pipe organ pieces of the "middle period" of Wakeman are noteworthy. That's not to say there were not some exceptions, but we hit a long "wilderness period" with Rick Wakeman post-"Criminal Record" (which was an absolute masterpiece). I think once he started digging out the old equipment around Retro 1 and 2, we got back a bit of the sound we were missing for so many years.
