Great to see Lorenzo Viotti make his debut with the Berliner Phil. One for the future, certainly!

Yo también estuve. De la sorpresa inicial al saber que Nézet-Séguin no dirigiría el concierto, a descubrimiento por mi parte de Lorenzo Viotti. Espectacular, bonito, emotivo...

I’m sure Viotti has a bright future ahead, but I’m not convinced (yet). I saw the entire performance and it was sloppy at times. I believe he had to sub for a guest conductor, so he did not even prepare this concert himself. Too big, conceptually complex, and difficult of a piece to debut someone on the sacred stage of the Philharmonie. Huge risk, in my humble opinion.

Yes, he was called the day before I believe (I watched it live as well). The pressure of conducting the Berlin Phil would have been tremendous so I don't blame him. He is still very young so im sure he will improve over the years

Did you have to show Viotti just as he had a missed cue at 1:30?

This conductor has so much potential to be the next BPO principal conductor

He's there as a replacement for an indisposed conductor. I will be amazed if he's even asked for conduct the orchestra again. The players looked like they are playing on autopilot.

Much of this seems recycled in the fourth symphony

actually Mahlers third, fourth and second symphony as well as the "Kindertotenlieder" derive from the same musical nexus. He reused many of the motives and melodies several times. Those works are also very similar in the matter of structure, all using chorus or at least a soloist singer. In my opinion somehow comparable to the "trilogia populare" by Verdi, also using a set of melodies or better musical ideas for three works (but in this case operas). Same can be seen in Wagner´s case, maybe that was where Mahler got the idea from. Knowingly, Mahler admired Wagner a lot.

Originally, the last moviment of 4th symphony was the last moviment of 3rd symphony. Finally Mahler decided used the final with singer for the 4th symphony. There are symphonies totally conected.

@@pedroj.herrero4785 Yes indeed. Also, he kept going using the same style elements also in his 5th. Compare the Scherzando from the 3rd to the Scherzo of the 5th, they are rather similar.
