    300 years after it was written, and the musicians all look like they’re having a total blast! Bach and the Brandenburgs are truly timeless. Michala Petri is an absolute gem as always. Reinhold Friedrich is new to me, but he made that look effortless. Wonderful!

      We must keep the old ways alive no matter where or which culture. I love this music. I am Appalachian and see the old ways dying right and left. We will loose what it is that makes us unique. We will loose that identity that makes us US. I want to go to France and experience French Culture not someone else's.

      Totally agree. As a lapsed trumpeter aged 56 I am in awe, his performance is, dare I say, of Maurice Andre’s level - a bright and sweet tone with clean articulation. 👏❤️

    My Gosh! -- there's not a single thing to criticize here!
    Every performer enjoying his/herself throughout.
    The restrained and elegant direction by Mr Abbado, letting the performers be the center of attention.
    The world's top recorder performer in person!
    The crisp trumpet, and lovely oboe.
    A glorious venue, with appreciative audience who attended in attire this concert deserved.
    And oh yes -- J S Bach.
    I'm usually of the "original instrument" crowd, but this lovely performance might just be the best I've seen or heard on modern instruments. Bravo!

    • @chong2389
      @chong2389 3 года назад +4

      Exactly my thoughts. While original instruments performances give us as close an experience to what the composer heard, modern instruments in the hands of artists of the calibre of those in this performance (soloists and orchestra) is a treat! Only a trumpet player would stick a flower in his mouthpiece then play the final note up an octave - cattivo, Herr Friedrich! 👏👏👏👏👏

    Some notes on these notes:
    1. The trumpet is not 'blaring'. Bach wrote it to play in counterpoint with a violin, recorder and oboe, not to dominate them. While a modern instrument is used here, and modern instruments are generally louder, the balance is good because the trumpeter is exceptionally good.
    2. Bach and his contemporaries frequently used the trumpet. It was commonly used outside the field of battle. It is remarkable in other ways: being pitched in F is rare; it is unusually virtuosic but not exceptionally so for Bach's writing for trumpet.
    3. The final note played by the trumpeter is up a 4th from what is written, i.e. the tonic high F not the 5th which is C.

    • @johncorban7583
      @johncorban7583 2 года назад +5

      Good eye to catch the write up mistake about trumpets final note. Yes, I winced inside at the writer’s description of trumpet as “blaring”. In my opinion, the piccolo trumpet is a very clear, clean, precise, and pure sound - especially with a superb trumpeter like Frederich.

    The first movement of this wonderful work is among my favorites of all music, among all genres and ages. It is so moving, so innocently joyful, with just a slight touch of melancholy, but still vibrant, intertwined and harmonic. Like life itself.
    In my late teens and early twenties, I often set the speakers of the stereo at my ear's hight, sat in front of them, and listen to only that movement with my eyes closed. One of the most uplifting and deeply emotional experiences I had.

    Brandenburg recordings on RUclips oftem sound overstuffed without dimension, but these are alive. (I remember first loving these pieces when I was teenager. It was early Springtime and the treebuds like jewels in the bright sun.) Perhaps some recordings are from yesteryear and someoe tries to remix them digitally? And sometimes the forces are too large for this music. Neither works. This small chamber group is perfect. I'm on cloud 9... albeit temporarily, but that's life. I'm into all genres of music,from hard core punk and metal to jazz and classical with everything in between.Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 is my favourite but I enjoyed this video very much! The musicians did a stellar performance and the recording engineers got it right too! I've been listening to Bach all my long life and his music still has me in raptures!

    This is what will be left of us, if humanity is gone in a not too distant future. The first movement of this wonderful music is eternalized on two gold-plated records that were put on NASA Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, not this version, but the famous version conducted by Karl Richter in 1970. They were launched in 1977 to explore our outer planets and beyond, both have now left the solar system, gaining another 15km distance to earth every second and will be possibly found in 40.000 years or so by another civilization at some distant planet circling another sun.
    Both spaceprobes are still partly operational and are sending scientific data back to earth, as of 2024 it takes 22 hours (Voyager 1) and 17 hours (Voyager 2) for the radiosignal reaching us.

      Notice how happy or euphoric the musicians are to play this piece . Perhaps a life lesson here ? Bach’s # 2 con connects
      With all our emotions and makes me at least, feel human .

    What a phenomenal interpretation, collaboration, and performance!! I enjoyed it so very much, thank you!! It was a heavenly appetizer experience.
    I also learned something new today - Yamaha made a c/bflat/a piccolo trumpet. I didn’t know that - amazing!

    Thank you to all the musicians for this heavenly performance of a great Bach composition!
    And thank you, DW, for presenting the video to us!
    I've had the honour and pleasure to meet Reinhold Friedrich and even accompany him on the organ many years ago, though I'm not a professional musician...
    Still makes me happy to have these wonderful memories, when I listen to the recording on my old cassette 😊

    Amazing performance! The musicians are the best - especially the trumpet player! I love how the musicians smile, have fun, and enjoy the music, and that the audience truly appreciated them. And I enjoyed the recorder player switching to a piccolo recorder for the encore.
