  • Claudio Abbado and the Orchestra Mozart perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047 at the Teatro Municipale Valli in Reggio Emilia, Italy (2007).
    Of the six Brandenburg Concertos, this is likely the most well-known - with its wonderfully ceremonial, blaring trumpet in the first and third movements. In Bach's day, the trumpet was generally reserved solely for military music. This makes the use of trumpet in this second Brandenburg Concerto an anomaly, shaping the direction of the piece in striking fashion. Unusual in and of itself is the combination of the four solo instruments; alto recorder, violin, oboe, and trumpet - which compete in a virtuosic fugue in the outer movements.
    The most beautiful moment of this concert recording comes as a surprise, at its close. During the applause - which itself lasts more than two minutes - the stage is being showered with flowers. Euphorically, the musicians strike up an encore, repeating the last movement - the Allegro assai of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 - this time faster and with more intensity. The sopranino recorder plays the part of the alto recorder, and the last trumpet note of the stunning piece is played an octave higher - the triumphant finale to a magnificent concert.
    00:00 I. Allegro
    04:45 II. Andante
    08:30 III. Allegro assai
    11:11 Applause
    13:25 Encore: III. Allegro assai
    The Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-1051) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) are a collection of six instrumental works dedicated by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, in 1721. They are regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. But the concerts were probably composed between 1718 and 1721 for Bach’s Köthener Hofkappelle. Bach’s original title, “Six Concerts with Various Instruments,” describes exactly what is special about these concerts: the varied use of several instruments, i.e. different strings, wind instruments, or solo harpsichord for the concertino.

    The Orchestra Mozart was founded in 2004 to give talented young musicians the opportunity to play in a world-class orchestra with a world-class conductor. Claudio Abbado (1933-2014) is considered one of the greatest conductors of all time. In 2011, the music magazine “Classic Voice” named Abbado the most important of the top 100 living conductors. He was born into a family of musicians in Milan, Italy, on June 26, 1933. After studying conducting, piano and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, he continued at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1968 Abbado became chief conductor at the Milan Scala. In the subsequent years, he was to be seen on the world’s great concert stages, in Milan, London and Chicago. After giving his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1984, he was named the city’s general music director. In October 1989, the members of the Berlin Philharmonic elected him artistic director, succeeding Herbert von Karajan. He remained in Berlin until 2002. Abbado died in Bologna on January 20, 2014, aged 80, after a long battle with cancer.

    300 years after it was written, and the musicians all look like they’re having a total blast! Bach and the Brandenburgs are truly timeless. Michala Petri is an absolute gem as always. Reinhold Friedrich is new to me, but he made that look effortless. Wonderful!

    Stumbled on this after work, tonight. Just lifted my musical soul! Bravo....How I wish I could have just worked my passion....and been a part of an ensemble such as this. Thank you, musicians! Bach-and so many others-were just genius. And how during times without any creature comforts such as: this computer!

    Sir Paul McCartney, who as a young boy sang in the boys choir of a church in Liverpool, was very much inspired by Bach. The trumpet in one of his best compositions, Penny Lane, is a dedication to the legendary trumpet in this 2nd concerto.

    My Gosh! -- there's not a single thing to criticize here!
    Every performer enjoying his/herself throughout.
    The restrained and elegant direction by Mr Abbado, letting the performers be the center of attention.
    The world's top recorder performer in person!
    The crisp trumpet, and lovely oboe.
    A glorious venue, with appreciative audience who attended in attire this concert deserved.
    And oh yes -- J S Bach.
    I'm usually of the "original instrument" crowd, but this lovely performance might just be the best I've seen or heard on modern instruments. Bravo!

    • @chong2389
      @chong2389 3 года назад +4

      Exactly my thoughts. While original instruments performances give us as close an experience to what the composer heard, modern instruments in the hands of artists of the calibre of those in this performance (soloists and orchestra) is a treat! Only a trumpet player would stick a flower in his mouthpiece then play the final note up an octave - cattivo, Herr Friedrich! 👏👏👏👏👏

    Some notes on these notes:
    1. The trumpet is not 'blaring'. Bach wrote it to play in counterpoint with a violin, recorder and oboe, not to dominate them. While a modern instrument is used here, and modern instruments are generally louder, the balance is good because the trumpeter is exceptionally good.
    2. Bach and his contemporaries frequently used the trumpet. It was commonly used outside the field of battle. It is remarkable in other ways: being pitched in F is rare; it is unusually virtuosic but not exceptionally so for Bach's writing for trumpet.
    3. The final note played by the trumpeter is up a 4th from what is written, i.e. the tonic high F not the 5th which is C.

    • @johncorban7583
      @johncorban7583 Год назад +4

      Good eye to catch the write up mistake about trumpets final note. Yes, I winced inside at the writer’s description of trumpet as “blaring”. In my opinion, the piccolo trumpet is a very clear, clean, precise, and pure sound - especially with a superb trumpeter like Frederich.

    The performance is passionate and generous. The performers make themselves vulnerable and transparent in a remarkable way.

    Brilliant and well worth sticking around for the encore and that final trumpet high note and reaction from the musician himself
