Performed this with Detroit in 2015. I'm just a bass in the choir. Months earlier, when our director said we were doing it with the DSO, there was an audible gasp around the room. I had no idea what everyone was so excited about because I have NEVER HEARD IT before. For whatever reason. Don't judge. So we sit like chess pieces on these tiny wooden bleachers for 75 minutes before we sing a single note. And I'm old, so bathroom breaks are important to me. But you just hold it. And we're packed in like sardines because the choir is 150 people shoe-horned onto a stage holding 100 orchestra musicians. And it's hot. And we can't fidget. The first 8 minutes are OK, but then your back starts to spasm because you're trying to hold perfectly still because there are cameras live-streaming us all over the world. We know how critical RUclips viewers can be. And we want to do well for Detroit. So we sit in pain like nesting dolls waiting for the cue to stand and deliver what we've been rehearsing for 5 months. Let me tell you, it was worth every bit of that agony. And years later when you hear someone say they were at that concert and were in tears, you think back to the hot sardine bleachers and think: I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And Detroit's symphony is amazing.
That's one thing people who haven't performed in concert with many others can understand. When performing a piece like this, you must have stone-like discipline, even though you're experiencing the music more internally and thoroughly than any audience member. The entire orchestra depends on each of its members to create an expression of the composer's vision to the best of their ability.
Good Morning Dear Jamie, You are blessed and born fortunate to participate in the celestial concert. Thanks for describing your feelings and the atmosphere and the information at large. Great. Regards Uma
Brawo Orkiestra, brawo Maestro Simonie.👏👏❤❤🔥🔥
@@ked4 well to be totally honest I have never heard the 8th performed live. I have never been a huge fan of the 8th. I have heard the Chicago Symphony perform the second on two different occasions the first time with Pierre Boulez, which was pretty good. The second time with arguably the greatest Mahler interpreter, Bernard Haitink. When I heard the performance with Haitink I felt like there was nothing that could ever top that performance. I do plan to one day hopefully sooner than later hear the 8th live.
@@ked4 Yes more epic than the eighth lol, but not at face value. 8 is a diagonal line going up, but 2 is a rollercoaster - 8 starts happy and ends happy, 2 starts at a funeral, reminisces on the life of a close friend, questions if life itself is just a pointless game, decides to seek heaven, and is resurrected into eternal life after the biblical apocalypse. It’s the emotional impact that does it for me, and this is a hill I will die on haha
This is my favorite Symphony ever. Performing this symphony was a life changing experience in my musical career. I remember the feeling that came over me when I performed this competition, my emotions were overwhelmed. Being on a stage with a thousand performers performing this Symphony was a dream come true. I am truly thankful to have had this experience. ❤️
I could not live without classical music which can touch your soul. My kudos to all the talented musicians around the world that bring us such joy, including The Florida Orchestra of St. Petersburg.
I was privileged to have been in the auditorium for this performance - still in tears when i hear it... such music, such memories, such emotion. Truly brilliant.. Thanks.. ps worth chcking the full digitalconcerthall performance to listen to the opening piece A Survivor from Warsaw, Op. 46, a cantata by Arnold Schoenberg, written in tribute to Holocaust victims. segue into the Mahler.
I'll miss this iconic partnership!! 16 wonderful years, many memorable concerts and one epic playlist of the man himself in concert. Thank you Berlin Phil for having Sir Simon as your CC for 16 beautiful years
There's something Wagnerian about this epic finale. Sensational music thanks to RW's influence. Takes it to a whole new level, but manages quite remarkably to capture the ascent into Heaven. Truly inspired.
I became a Mahlerian over 12 years ago. The order in which I listened to each of his symphonies are as follows: 1. 5th 2. 9th 3. 1st 4. Das Lied 5. 10th 6. 8th 7. 6th 8. 7th 9. 4th 10. 3rd 11. 2nd I only heard the 2nd this year after 12 years. What a wait. I had no idea what I was missing.
I will never forget that night of February 18, 2012 in Berlin (with the tickets sold out on the internet then 2 hours after being put on sale 6 months earlier), the most spectacular thing I have witnessed and ... accompanied by the Love of Me life, Anita The words are not enough to describe it!!!
After the vaccine is widely available and the COVID is defeated, please schedule this symphony around the world for your first grand re-opening concert!
Gunna commit heresy here. Not as good as his final CBSO concert. The CBSO chorus was much larger so could match the band. Here sops under strain and flat. I was at CBSO - 25 minute standing ovation!!!!! CRIED!!! As did many of the performers. GOAT!!!!
Anybody else recognise the female french horn player from the 'Simon Rattle & 6 Berlin school orchestras' video? :o so she teaches *and* plays in a professional orchestra :o woah :o

Thank you for that wonderful insight. And thank you for giving us such beautiful music. I had tears too listening.
As a person who has had to overcome wanting to cry while singing in chorus, I commend you

I can't stop crying at Mahler's message of hope, especially in this time when so many people are suffering.
The most epic finale and all of classical music! Brings tears to my eyes every time!
More epic than Mahler's 8th finale?

As if Mahler added every instrument in the world, and every instrument player, and every singer from the beginning of time to this glorious finale.
This is the first Mahler I ever heard more than 40 years ago. It hasn't lost the power to thrill me.
The first Mahler I heard was the 9th 15 years ago. I only ever heard the second this year. Dragging my feet.

Literally the reason that I am a conductor.
I think Simon Rattle has said more or less the same thing - this is quite a piece!
2:09 - love the passion in the basses!

I sang in the Philharmonie in 1970 and worked as one of the many of who sold attendees their programs. An awesome, amazing, wonderful experience.

Berliner Philharmoniker will always be the best for me.
0:49 that trumpet high note, chills

Played Mahler 2 with Sir Rattle back in 1996. Thrilling!

Grande Direttore,in Mahler.Uno dei più grandi...
and that's a wrap! Bravo and thank you to "Five Things" AJ Willingham!
I can only hope this is what I hear when the time comes!
No doubt ! It is the best orchestra in the world
Some would argue this with you. I'd stack the Phila Orchestra of the 60s and 70s against the BSO.
What a great work !
Powerful performance.
Best orchestra ever❣🎻🎺🎹🥁🎷📯
B R A V O !!!!!!!👏

Goodbye to An Adorable ''Maestro''.
After the vaccine is widely available and the COVID is defeated, please schedule this symphony around the world for your first grand re-opening concert!

Superb!
Yes indeed. God was looking over Mahler's shoulder.
I like this video❤
Tremendo acto de masas.
Why dont the solists sing in «Aufersteh’n»? It’s marked «tutti». I dont like that.
hi I like this video is there an organist playing for this song?breathtaking
Yep, there is!
Dad: stop the music
Me: why
Dad: We have bigger speakers downstairs
Why are the vocal soloists seated?
ich war live dabei
Anybody else recognise the female french horn player from the 'Simon Rattle & 6 Berlin school orchestras' video? :o so she teaches *and* plays in a professional orchestra :o woah :o
Most (if not all) pro orchestral players also have teaching jobs, either in schools or conservatoires :)
British teeth, no doubt...
Exelente
Come on Berlin Philharmonic! Where was the organ, bells and gongs?
If you didnt hear the organ, you are probably deaf...
