This is a legendary film. Tragic and beautiful.
Absolutely, it's fantastic. Thanks for watching ❤
The actor who played Proximus (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta, he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
Oh wowww that's tragic, RIP💔
He also played baddie Bill Sykes in the very popular, world famous film version of the musical "Oliver!"
He was somewhat of a National Treasure - he used to appear on many TV chat shows whilst inebriated.... you never quite knew what you were going to get. 😳🇬🇧
Maximus was originally a farmer so the ritual of smelling the dirt was partly because it reminded Maximus of his home, as well as preparing him for battle
I always figured it kind of helped ground him to the space and connect to the land he was about to fight on. I like your interesting take. I also kind of figured it was like chalk to keep your hands dry
@@J4ME5_ yeah I would agree with the 'keeping your hands dry
also. Don't want that sword to slip out of your hands!
Are you sure? Because a farmer never has the rank of an officer, let alone a general (they also call Maximus a tribune, but tribune is actually a rank well below a general). But historically he should come from a noble family. Also, the cavalry belongs to the auxiliary troops and would never be led by a general. They would be led by a prefect.
@@philg.5151 he or someone else literally calls him a farmer AND Ceasar calls him Rome's greatest general. He also mentions about his crops.
@@philg.5151 Actually, agriculture was the only kind of business acceptable for Romans of senatorial rank. You could lose your senatorial rank if people found out that you were making money with anything else other than agriculture. The Romans were originally a people of farmers or at leqst that's how they saw themselves. Farming was seen as the most respectable of all the "honest trades" and occupations. People of equestrian rank often were richer than senators because they were allowed to get involved in any trade. Especially trading luxuary goods was highly profitable but seen as anworthy of the dignity of a true Roman. Romans of senatorial ranks used all kinds of middlemen to hide their "unworthy" businesses and everybody was aware of that. But officially the Roman farmer/militia soldier was held in the highest regards and seen as the embodiment of Roman values.
"What we do now echoes in eternity" is a real phrase of Marcus Aurelius, writed in his book "Meditations"
Love that ❤
Shadows and dust
The maggots cleaned his wound. Not the other way around
Oooh thanks for clarifying ❤
@@wadumin and GET this ..they are STILL using maggots in modern day medicine. I ve met a guy in hospital who had a BAG of maggots in his leg !! they are put inside of a bag so they cannot move around freely but they CAN suck the dead flesh thru the tissue of the BAG and thus clean up the wound ^^.. nasty huh ? ..
Then the salt killed the infection. Also to point out is incest was common in those days. We learned the morbid babies that came out of that so ,as recently as the 1800, they had children as first cousins, but it demonstrated some goofy looking faces doing it that way, Malformed faces, large bent noses, weird looks and genetic defects ,disease earlier, etc. so we totally abolished the idea of even going with your first cousin as well.
@@waduminThe maggots eat the rotten flesh and the technique can be still used today with maggots specially bred in sterile conditions from a specific species of fly.
After years, Ridley Scott brought a so-called sandal film to the big screen. I was skeptical. It is an emotional masterpiece. Every award is deserved.
Much better than his Me2 movie The Last Duel
Sand dries the humidity, so the weapon doesn't slips, like the athletes rub magnesium in their hands to grip firmly the bars.
Ooooh so that's why, why does he smell it though ?
@@wadumin I'd like to think that reminds him his land and his farming life with his family, the dirt as a symbol of the land he wants to return to?
This was my thought too, like gymnast chalk, but I wasn't sure. It seems like a ritual that is both spiritual and practical in a way.
That rubbing the dirt can be symbolism or just keeping his palm dry so that the sword won't slip when he swings it
Hmmm yup.
@wadumin When he smells the dirt in his hands, it is a reminder that he is also a farmer.
He grabs the sand or dirt to give him a better grip on the sword, it's also his ritual
Cicero is his man servant and scribe. There was a scribe or writer of events, etc, at that time called Cicero. Cicero was a real person. A lot of historical information came from his writings
Oh wow, thanks for letting us know ❤
The slave trader you wondered if he was Persian was Omid Djalili, a Iranian British actor, comedian and writer
I was righttttt
So happy to see you guys back, my favourite movie reactions, luv you guys and wish you every success in getting together 🙏🏾
Thanks for sticking around my friend, you're awesome ❤
My favorite movie of all time since it came out in 2000. Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest method actors in history. Great reaction guys. ❤
Agreed, thanks for watching ❤
More historical epic/fiction films:
- Troy
- Kingdom of Heaven (starring Legolas!)
- Robin Hood (2010, also Russell Crowe)
- Braveheart
- 300
- The Last Samurai
Added, thanks for the list ❤
Be careful now, a Roman Emperor isn't a "king"; they don't have a royal bloodline or royal powers - even though many tried to keep their powers within the same family (Marcus Aurelius'' problem with his on in this film). Imagine a vey, very , very powerful chairman of a multinational corporation with regular board meetings and an army to run - and usually wants to keep the corporation a "family" business.
Yess thanks for clarifying ❤
The tigers are a combo of animatronic and real trained tigers.
Commodus is arguably one of the most hated characters in all of cinema AKA Joaquin Phoenix absolutely killed the role
TRUE ❤
Hans Zimmer did the music, one of the best works of his career, many people have only known about him for Nolan's Batman and Pirates of the Caribbean movies and all the ones he scored since 1988, but Hans has been working in Hollywod since 1988.
Absolutely loved his work in this, he doesn't miss❤
Russell Crowe did all his own stunts and was an expert horseman. The cuts on his face at the beginning are real. They were caused when the horse he was riding spooked and backed into branches of a tree . The director decided to leave them as wounds in battle.
Oh wow, RESPECT ❤
@@wadumin Yeah, it takes real guts to do your own stunts.
Loosly based on history. Emperor Aurelius was real, so was Commodus.
Thanks for letting us know ❤
@@wadumin The Fall Of The Roman Empire (1964) was the original story of GLADIATOR-watch it I advise everyone.
Don’t quote me on the exact percentage but there was some 85-90% of this movie is all practical stunts and effects. Apart from a few specific (primarily of Rome and the Colosseum wide shots) the majority of this movie was all just purely filmed.
And there was roughly 10,000 costumes made for this movie.
It’s freaking wild to think of in todays CGI world
That's what makes it hit hard, respect ❤
I don´t remember that scene of the guy saying he spoke 7 languages. Is this an extended version?
It is the extended version yes❤
I've seen this movie so many times, it's so weird to watch people watch the director's cut and see scenes I havent memorized 100x over.
Hahah thanks for watching it with us ❤
This is one of my all time FAVORITES!!! TY SM!!!!!!
Thanks for watching ❤
Best film in the early 2k, good yo see you guys, love from México.
Good to have you here, much love ❤
In the year 2000. That's as early as it gets. Lol.
👍 "big like!" 😂
Loll
Hans Zimmer composed the soundtrack
He NAILED it, man doesn't miss
This is one of the movies I'd watch any time I found it on TV no matter what point I came in on. Shawshank Redemption is another. Such a good story and good characters.
Totally understand the connection issues. My husband and I started out long distance too and we're about to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. Persistence and love will carry you through. You two are so cute together 🥰
Oh wow, wish the best for both of you, thanks for being here ❤
Awesome reaction to an awesome movie!!
Thanks for watching ❤
Good job you two!
Thanks for watching ❤
You both keep calling the Emperor a King. He's not a king. Rome had no monarchy anymore at this time. The Emperors were autocrats that could be chosen from any walk of life.
i always find it stupid that the boy says "i'm maximus, savior of rome!"
if his mother was telling him things like that, you'd think she'd be smart enough to tell him not to say anything like that in front of his uncle. and honestly she'd probably be smart enough not to even tell her son anything like that period. telling him ruined the entire plan and was the only reason maximus died.
i guess they needed a reason to kill maximus off but the way they did it just never made sense to me.
Ah I can shed light on this-
The boy loved his mother and would have haunted her steps whenever he was not taking lessons...
Which would have been evenings and night, when anyone coming to secretly meet with her is most likely to be there, seeing as she was drugging Commodus after dinner each night.
Thus his hiding nearby and hearing key phrases or words is highly likely.
Just as his mother not realizing he was aware and could repeat information unknowingly was likely too.
And the seeds of disaster and unintentional betrayal grew.
@@seaneendelong8065 yeah, that makes a lot more sense than what i was thinking.
Nice one to watch that movie guys now try to watch Disney movies for the long times OK.
The music made by hans zimmer bro❤
Man doesn't miss 🔥
@@wadumin yeh i judge you too soon🥲
@@david_whale why bro?
if i could only watch one movie for the rest of my life gladiator wouldn't even be close to the top of my list. it's a pretty good movie but nowhere near that good.
total recall would be one of my top choices, along with the terminator and the matrix. pirates of the caribbean at world's end and the bourne supremacy would be one of my top choices too.
i've watched all of those movies dozens of times and never get tired of them. gladiator i've seen a few times and i do enjoy it, but i don't get the urge to rewatch it frequently like those other movies.
Good reaction
His a farmer his testing the ground smelling ground.
IDK why and it might sound stupid but Gladiator always gave me berserk vibes, berserk the anime i mean
We haven't seen that👀
Great
Thanks for watching ❤
I used to watch this movie all the time, my girlfriend at the time hated it 😂
She had no reason to hate this masterpiece 🗿❤
25:55...."isnt this Italy"......funniest thing I've heard all year..
He smelled him to remember his dead son.
Ooooh
and this is a true story that makes it more sad😢
Really!!! Omg
yes everything in this movie is based on reality of rome
The balls!?! lol
Touching the earth and smelling it before battle is ritualistic for him. To honour the gods and his ancestors to gain strength. That's what I always took from it anyway.
That makes sense and it's beautiful
Please, could you react to The Green Mile, 300, Apocalypto and Snatch? They are great movies!
Yess, thanks for watching ❤
Gen z is really ignorant. I watched this movie when I was 17 y o. These guys are infantile.
Excellent reaction, guys, but it would have been even better had Amin (I hope I have your name right) cut out the frequent supercillious remarks.
Plzzz watch ramaiya vastavaiya moive .
Watch Ben Hur from 1967 I believe. Gladiator took lot of inspiration from thjs Classic. Never watch the remake, is a terrible movie.
Added, thanks for suggesting ❤
@@wadumin Welcome. You won't believe by the scale of the action scenes, is just too real. The movie is actually from 1959, and it is based in book from 1800s, I believe.
guy is so annoying, you dont have to react about everything.
Please react to Indian tamil movie ❤
This is one of those movies that doesn't need a sequel.
I'm VERY skeptical of Gladiator II coming out 24 YEARS LATER.
I hope it doesn't tarnish the legacy of the first film.
Yesss I've seen the trailer, can't wait for it ❤
The producers got permission to burn down a section of forest that was already scheduled to be cleared.
Oooh good to know that, thanks for watching ❤
Oh my god love Anita's hair❤
Ahhh thank youuuu❤
Great reaction! You guys compliment each other!! Remember it was movies like Gladiator, LOTR, and the Matrix that made it possible for shows and movies like GOT, and the MCU/DC films to be so successful! Keep going, you guys are good!!! ❤😀
Thanks for watching, yess absolutely true ❤
The movie THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE(1964) was the original GLADIATOR=I advise everyone to watch it,it is GREAT and if i tell you any more I will spoil it for you.......
This movie will be difficult to come even close to, but Gladiator 2 hits theaters in a couple weeks...rumor has it that it's about Lucious 20 years later.
Oooh can't waitttt❤
Fun Fact: Ridley Scott got special permission to burn that forest down, as it was already scheduled for deforestation by the government. So, those flames are NOT special effects.
One of the few epic action movies that can make a grown man cry.
An absolute masterpiece, thanks for watching ❤
Please react to indian movie bhaag Milkha bhaag
Love your reactions both of you! I subscribed to your channels both 😬. Would love to see your reactions on the below:
- The Green Mile
- Warrior (starrinf Tom Hardy)
- Inglorious Basterz
- Trainin Day
Thanks for being here, we'll definitely check out your suggestions ❤
Maximus was a general in the roman Empire. Comodus did fight the gladiators in the arena. He was trained by a slave/gladiator named Narcissus. Comodus gave him his freedom so that he could train him to fight in the Coliseum. Narcissus ended up killing Comodus in 192 AD because he found out that gladiators whom Comodus fought were given dull swords under his instruction, and those gladiator were worked up so much that they were tired by the time the fought Comodus. Also his sister was the evil one trying to fing ways to kill Comodus for the throne because she was older than him. She felt she needed to run the empire and not this young emperor. That is why he fought in the arena as a gladiator, to show that even though he was young, he was brave and could fight. Comodus lived a very lonely life, didn't trust anyone because of the many times people were trying to kill him.
React to the film: THE COFFEE TABLE (2022), an Argentine psychological horror that only gained repercussion this year, thanks to its intelligent and disturbing plot... literally. It's worth checking out.
We'll definitely check it out, thanks for watching ❤
Where Annabelle Creation???
Comin comin❤
Now you are free...:)
😭😭
A few things:
- Lucilla slapped him as a sister, but kissed his hand as his subject. It seems complicated but she had to show him respect because he is now the emperor and she has no other choice; she has seen what he is capable of.
- Marcus Aurelius is not a king, but an emperor. Kings rule over one realm; emperors rule over lots of realms or kingdoms, so he is superior to a king. By the way, Marcus Aurelius was indeed a philosopher and a very wise man in real life. He wrote "Meditations", a collection of his thoughts, and is considered the father of Stoicism, a school of Greek philosophy based on upholding virtues.
- I think you were a bit hard on Lucilla while watching. She does give shady vibes in the beginning but when she talks to Maximus in jail it's very clear, at least to me, that she was very afraid of her brother and wanted to have him deposed, or at least killed. Somehow you guys didn't sympathize with her (it happens), that's why you don't understand why she and Maximus kissed.
- A bit of History: in real life, Lucilla herself had the title of Empress because she was the daughter of a Caeser, but lost it just because her husband died (he was the second in line after Commodus). Even if she had royal blood, she was only had some authority because she married a man. Men were preferred. Women were not considered equal to men in the Greek and Roman empires, even though there were a few Empresses. Commodus became a really bad emperor and very erratic, and that worried Lucilla, who would certainly have been a better Caesar, just like her father said in the film. She did try to have Commodus assassinated but failed. Actually, she was killed on Commodus's orders. At first he only exiled Lucilla and her son but then sent someone to execute them.
The one who made the soundtrack of this movie... I the one who made all the soundtrack of LOTR trilogy. Hans Zimmer :)
11:25, 11:38 FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT! The character (and real) of Commodus was an evil little prick, but the writing shows that the character of Marcus (not the real one) had a hand in shaping him to be the tyrant he became. It doesn't excuse Commodus for any of his actions and he did have a choice to be a better person, but it helps us empathize and understand his point of view.
IMAGINE spending your entire life desperately seeking your father’s approval, only to feel the weight of his constant disappointment pressing down on you. He may not have meant to show it and he may have loved you, but with every glance, every word, it was clear that you were never enough-never the son he truly wanted. Every success felt hollow because no matter what you did, it could never erase the unspoken truth: You were less than who you should be. And just when you're poised to finally claim your birthright, the crown that is yours by blood, your father snatches it away. He hands it not to a stranger, but to a man who is a rival for your father's affection and favor-a soldier, held up as the 'better man.' Imagine the sting of realizing that your own father, the man you’ve spent your whole life trying to please, saw more worth in another. It wasn’t just your birthright that was taken; it was the final confirmation of your deepest fear-that you were, in his eyes, a disappointment.
27:20 This is for the viewer too "are you not entertained?" This was the 90's still better then what Star Wars is doing NOW
Stopped watching because of the woke screening of graphic scenes.
Smelling and feeling the ground is a reminder that "From the dust we came so shall we return"
36:58 The score was composed by Hans Zimmer. The man's an absolute GOD!! ❤️❤️
15:02 She knows damn well what he did, but she also knows that puts a target on her son's back, since he would be next in line, so she does what she has to in order to protect him.
wadumin please react to rrr indian movie with anita please please please

I also like the smell of dirt. I did not have such a thing before I have some chronic illness. I do not know why but I occasionally touch some soft stones on the ground and smell it. Maybe another sickness? IDK.
I love the smell of wet dirt, wish you good health my friend ❤
None of those tigers are CGI
Best movie in existence.
Probably the greatest standalone film ever made. Thanks for your reaction guys.
Thanks for watching Benjamin ❤
18:44 Back then, they had no antibiotics, so they put maggots in the wound to eat the head tissue, but they didn’t touch the healthy tissue underneath so the wound would heal properly.
Thanks for clarifying ❤
This movie won 7 academy awards including best movie best actor best supporting actor but did not win for best director because the hollywood academy of elites do not like Ridley Scott the director. I never watched an AA show again. Scott should have won hands down.
Absence well deserved ❤
I know I recommend a walk to remember, but since we’re in the topic of ancient wars. I recommend Troy!!
We'll check out both, thanks for watching ❤
Back on your channel after a very loooong freakin time. Got indulge into some stuffs cause I've just got admission into a University. So so much refreshed to see tou guys. Love from Rajasthan India. Hell yeah🎉❤❤

Added, thanks for watching
great film, beautiful girl watching
😁❤
Those tigers were real. 🐅 🐯 😮
Loved that sceneee
You should watch lord of the rings rings of power
Yo, Gladiator be hittin' different, no cap! 💀💀 Russell Crowe really said "I'm finna end this emperor's whole career" and did that. 😤🗡 Mans went from general to slave to absolute unit in the arena, sheeeesh! 🏟🔥
Commodus be mad sus, giving off major small pp energy fr fr. 🚩 Maximus' "Are you not entertained?" speech? Iconic behavior, straight bussin'. 👑
That revenge arc got me shook, it's giving main character energy 24/7. 💯 Ancient Rome stay wildin', but Maximus' fit was drippin' harder than the blood in the Colosseum, no kizzy. 🩸👀
Lucilla really said "I'm playing both sides so I always come out on top" and I felt that. 🧠 The afterlife scene at the end got me crying in the club rn. 😭🌾
This movie slaps hard, deadass. You were missing out big time, lil sis 🏛🐺
I love the Gen Z language 🤣🤣❤️
Another one! Good reaction! That’s what is so about you channel! More reactions. Try Castlevania or Vox Machina
Thanks for being here, we'll definitely check out your suggestions ❤
A fantastic film and beautifully made.
I haven’t seen any similar film that comes close to this gem 😊
Absolutely, it's amazing ❤
the tigers are real. He had a Treat in his hand and the tiger jumped on him to get the treat in his hand.
That was so well done
