*Kia ora (hello) Ohhh this first McLaren car needs to come back home to New Zealand... I hope one day that Egon Zweimiller will send this car home to NZ. Bruce was born & raised in West Auckland New Zealand, so he is a 'westie'... and has a huge following here. He is like our other famous kiwi 'Burt Munro' who built his home made motorbike & who raced his bike on the salt flats and to this day still hold the title for that speed. Burt's motorbike is in a NZ museum. The third famous one was John Britten who built his motorbike to race... and he beat all others on the track... There were only a few Britten bikes made... one is in a museum in NZ too. The others are still around. Thanks Jay for showing us this video... and you got to drive Bruce McLaren's car. 🙂nz*
*Bruce was actually brought up in Remuera, and went to Meadowbank Primary School. His father, Les "Pop" McLaren, owned a service station in Remuera Road.*
@@Aotearoa_Kiwi *Opps.... but here is the westie link.. The 32-year-old father of one was a household name in New Zealand, especially in west Auckland where he'd owned Bruce McLaren Motors on Te Atatu Rd since 1965. He was buried at Waikumete Cemetery in Glen Eden. in West Auckland. Plus also a Intermediate sch is named after him in West Auckland too. As well as a street also bears his name in West Auckland 🙂*
@@andreacrashe9894 Yip, there's definitely a link to West Auckland. Bruce's first motorsport event was the Muriwai Beach Hillclimb in his Austin Ulster. He even named his home _"Muriwai"_ in Surrey, England.
I'd heard Bruce liked the Oldsmobile engines because they were a good, solid, block , reliable and would hold up to the rigors of racing a lot better than the one off engine manufacturers. I also heard that the papaya orange the cars were painted was because that was the only color paint they had on hand when they built the first car but it stood out so they kept in.
We Love Jay Leno he's just such a New England guy work ethics and no B. S. This Owner is awesome and an Elvis Fan what's not to like . Awesome Show as usual.
The Fabulous Fox 5!!! 🤣 I too watched that movie and loved it for all the amazing cars that were in the movie. I was also young…and, to me, that car was the sexiest thing I had ever seen. I wanted one of my own so badly as a kid. I did learn that it was a full race car and not a production car. I was crushed…but, oh well. I wouldn’t want to take anything away from this amazing piece of racing history… But I would be afraid to drive it too much, especially at speed. I wonder if a replica has ever been made of it.🤔 I would love to wring it out and see exactly what it could do. Of course, the replica would have to be set up exactly like the M1A is…but I would probably forgo the magnesium wheels for some pin drive salt flat wheels…just for fun.😉 LOL…listen to me dreaming out loud.😂 Thanks, Mr.Leno for letting us see, hear, and watch it go. I still think it’s one of those cars that was WAY ahead of its time. I am sure that it is just a stupid fast as it was when it was built. True automotive royalty indeed.👍🏻🤙🏻😎

MAN - what a magnificent piece of history - PRICELESS :) !!!
How cool it would be to watch the movie and then walk to your garage and sit in this car. As many already noted Egon is very knowledgeable and a great ambassador for the car. I’ve lived in Europe for a number of years and spent a lot time with Austrians, I chuckled when Jay started the car and Egon gave him the finger motion to proceed - so Austrian. Wonderful, wonderful video and you can tell Jay was thrilled to drive it.
What a knowleable owner Egon is! My ears exploded when Jay started the engine... WOW!!!
So great that you feature cars like this! And the story behind it.
I love the car not as much as some Jay has showed but I got to say this guy knows his cars history I think this easily top 3 videos I've seen
We Love Jay Leno he's just such a New England guy work ethics and no B. S.
This Owner is awesome and an Elvis Fan what's not to like . Awesome Show as usual.
Egon sure knows his McLaren, the Elvis connection is amazing. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate. Loved this episode! Loved the side burns!
I wonder if a replica has ever been made of it.🤔
I would love to wring it out and see exactly what it could do. Of course, the replica would have to be set up exactly like the M1A is…but I would probably forgo the magnesium wheels for some pin drive salt flat wheels…just for fun.😉
LOL…listen to me dreaming out loud.😂 Thanks, Mr.Leno for letting us see, hear, and watch it go. I still think it’s one of those cars that was WAY ahead of its time. I am sure that it is just a stupid fast as it was when it was built. True automotive royalty indeed.👍🏻🤙🏻😎
Love to see the passion these guys have for cars. I saw a Webber Carb setup on a 289 Mustang back in the late 60s and I thought that was so cool looking.
Don't know how cool you are with Chris Titus, big Elvis and car guy!!!
Great show!!!
