Maybe when they took the 4-speed manual out of it the odometer gear/cable wouldn't work in the automatic trans they put in it. But by the shape the body is in, I'd say it seems to have been kept inside and never been out in the weather much. Either way, for what it is, the shape it's in, and having all number matching parts with it, It could have 113,000 on it and it would still be worth a lot of money. No history if you don’t have a boat load of trophies to go with it and a signature of a recognizable name on the car. Say if this was Richard Petty’s race car back in the day or dealt with any by the last name of Force…by all means keep it a race car but because it isn’t that - I don’t see the race history bringing it much but the mileage and no rain and easily brought to original condition, that makes it a top 500 Barrett Jackson car

Guys a super nice guy and not trying to take down on him, but I’m sure these guys felt the same way I do watching this video because he is trying to explain things about the car that he doesn’t quite understand but is talking about the parts like he’s an expert. Again not throwing shade but thier where so many moments when I just had to shake my head a bit listening to him explain certain mods done to the car knowing what I’m actually looking at or what he’s trying to brag about. Much love and respect to you sir for holding on to the car and keeping it great shape overall for a car that’s basically been sitting for 30 years

Wow, this is the best Gas Monkey episode! If it was me and I know it might not be the best money play. I would have the original engine and trans completely gone through and put together so they could easily be installed. Then I would do whatever is necessary to the existing race drivetrain to have it operating perfectly then maybe do a super detail on the car and leave it in race livery. Maybe trailer it to a few meets every year so folks could see what they were racing back in the day. Normally I totally like original as sold back then cars but this one is pretty darn cool just as it is!

HI Gas Monkey fans. I am Danny Orth in Oklahoma. Back in the 1980s, I bought a Boss 9 (as Richard calls it) from AL Burchette who owns Anns Chicken Fry on NW highway in OKC.. Jerry Harris was his mechanic I paid 5500.00 at that time which was my life savings.
The Boss9 was purchased at Dub Richardson ford. Just like Richards car the Boss9 that I owned was purchased by a mechanic that worked at the dealership. It was taken apart and instantantly turned into a drag car. Mine had around 1100 miles on the clock. The previous owners kept blowing up the boss 9 engines so they had Gapp and Rousch build them a Boss 302 which was in it when I bought the car.
HOLY CRAP was that a nasty boss 302. It had chevy aluminum rods and 14 to one pistons, a huge roller cam, tunnel ram with two 660s. The car still had the top loader and the traction lock rear diff with a 620 gear!!!! It was running a 29 inch slick so I would leave the line at 7500 and shift at 8000 rpms what a rush!!!!
Dang when that car left it yanked the front wheels up and carried them around 15 feet then when I slammed into second it would pick them up again. That car was so loud and shook the ground when it idled that my mom used to come out of the house and tell me to turn it off so they could hear the news!
The car would run 9.90s in good air and low 10s when it was hot!
I took the car to Ardmore Raceway and that car broke something every time out, lol. One time it turned a roller lifter sideways and when I had the pan off cleaning the rollers out of it I noticed one rod had a crack.
So I called Gapp and Rousch and those guys were so nice to me they said they had an extra rod and sent it to me for free!!!
So I had to pull the drivers side head gasket and fix the rod. The car had copper head gaskets and was o ringed!!
Had to order a head gasket from some guy in NYC who cussed like a sailor but he was the only one who could get me a head gasket at that time.
Last time out at the track I had broken the detroit locker ring gear side bearing carrier. Fixed it and traded the car for an x top alcohol dragster that was know as the pepper express, to a guy named Don Stout in El Reno Oklahoma..... Have not seen the car since but it was Black and had flames.
On the rear deck lid it had a guy in a knights suit of armor and it said Death Rides a Horse!!!
Please if anyone knows what happened to that car will you let me know. I cannot afford it at the moment but would love to hear about it and see it once again.
Thanks for reading my diatribe! I am just an old car guy who has had tons of cool rare hard to find cars over the years and wish I had every one of them back!!!!! I bet most of you folks reading this have similar stories as well.
Take care and be safe and as Richard says, When you find a Boss 9 in ANY condition, GET YOU SOME OF THAT!

My bro and I knew the Penners. My memory may be a little foggy, but the Penners ran the car in B/MP in early 70s. Pro Stocks, in '71, were running high 9s. I believe Penner's stang was running around 10.50s in B/MP. It had dual carb, two 660s. It set several class records for its time. An analogy would be what the factory stock showdown cars are running today, 7.50s. If you were running 10.50s back then, you were cooking.

@@gearmeister yeah $3K for the magnesium valve covers alone! Being the lowest mile 429 Mustang in existence makes it a tough call. If the car was raced by a popular winning team and held some championship titles id leave it the way it is. Strictly on a max money profit it should be put back to original condition and youll still have a moster HM built engine and trans to stuff in something else.

I don't have time to restore her until I retire, I DRIVE a 65 GT mustang, (A code). Love these classics.
