Chasm the Rift is oftentimes described as slavjank Quake. And while there are similarities between the two, Chasm's design is a little bit more brutal and suppressive than Quake. Go figure, it isn't like Ukraine has had the most peaceful history.
General Arcade brings the Ukrainian cult shooter Chasm the Rift back to modern PCs in a sort-of port, sort of remaster, sort of remake.
The Crux of the Video is in the title, but I want you to click it so I guess it's kind of clickbait. These descriptions are also important for SEO so Quake, Chasm the Rift, Quake, Quake, Chasm the Rift, FPS, Boomer Shooter, RetroFPS, Chasm the Rift, Quake, Quake, Chasm the Rift, Chasm.

I wonder if I can get banned from RUclips for this? That'd be kinda hilarious, ngl. I'd just restart, someone has to tell the work that Chasm the Rift is Not Really Like Quake. Also: I don't have a massive audience so I'm assuming I could get most of you back.
Playing this game on its hardest difficulty is what helped me discern between Quake and Chasm. Chasm requires a lot of tactical precision, timing and taking advantage of your surroundings that can be used for cover. Each encounter feels like an intimate dance that requires your full attention in order to triumph over your enemy. Its arguably the first fps game to successfully combine the best elements of a tactical and arcade style shooter into an amazing experience.
You know what this game _does_ remind me of? Unreal. Not Unreal Tournament, just Unreal, which UT was a spin-off of. Especially what it seems Unreal was like early in development, with its weird blend of aesthetics and many dark crypt levels
I did not decided to call them "boomer shooters" lol... it's a horrible term
gotta hand it to the graphics designers:
The graphics are probably THE BEST one could have wanted back in 1997... ! :O
.
Am I the only one who gets more Unreal vibes from this than Quake? At least aesthetically/in art style.
One of the guns looks like it's from Unreal 1 for sure yes.
fun fact, chasm is also a 2d game thats scaled to look like its 3d, much like doom, some of the static objects and spinning lights really make it hard to tell though. very interesting game
Damn
The real intrigue to it is that it manages to pull off Quake-level visuals despite running in a 2.5D engine-to the point that the only way to tell it's not true 3D is to realize that all the levels are suspiciously lacking in verticality.
Were the members of Free Radical fans of this? Because the story sounds a lot like a less comedic variation on a Timesplitters story to me. I just started playing it and its fun but so far not as fun as many other 90s shooters. Maybe I'll like it more once I get further in and find more weapons plus more enemy types.
No clue, but it also wouldn't surprise me.
It's not gonna be for everyone. I think the key is being aware that it's not really like the other 90's style shooters beyond the surface level. Depending on difficulty--but especially on the higher difficulty--it's feels a lot more deliberate and tactical than something like Quake.
I remember playing the demo for CTR back in the 90s, before I'd even played Quake. I'd only played Wolf3D/Doom/Duke3D/Strife/StarWars:DarkForces up to that point, as far as FPS games are concerned, and remember being super impressed by CTR's 3d model enemies - but I never remembered the name of the game, just the jester hats on the bad guys and the vibe of the game's visuals. This is a real treat!
I'm from Ukraine and I didn't know that this first-person shooter was cool in our country.
I've never been to Ukraine so idk if it has any level of reknown there, but imo it should be. It has become maybe my favorite FPS of that specific era.
They share similar aesthetics
But gameplay wise, Chasm reminds me of Half-Life with how the pace was deliberately slowed for traversing a industrial environment.
I m here to say something: Chasm the rift is like chasm the rift
Exactly.
I played demo of this long time ago, when it was added on CD to some magazine.
I liked it very much. I remember to this day 3 things:
Jokers (and they bow after killing you)
Razor blades gun
Egipt levels (I am not even sure it was playable in egipt, or just on screen)
So I am no sure what was the scope of demo. Was it few 1st levels, or just some levels from each episodes.
I was searching for this game, since I forgot the title. I later thought it was Powerslave :)
I really liked the egiptian things in this. The same in Tomb Raider of course.
The Volcano gun's model is exactly the same as the Unreal chaingun released a year after Chasm. Really, just look at them.
My favorite childhood game! I still have the cd and the box of the original game. I love this one very much and Im glad people are finding it again thanks to the newer version.
I really like such games as Quake and Doom, and it was nice to know that we also have our analogue of these games, although unfortunately I have never played Chasm the Rift 😄
I finished this game as a kid. Was fun and scary.
It's always a breath of fresh air to watch your reviews. Love your editing skills.
Cannot wait unitl your Faith Chapter 3 video you'll surely do because you loved the 1st two! You're amazing with essays as you talk about concepts and essence more than gameplay and such
Thank you. Yeah, that's the plan, although between work I'm sure I'll be later than everyone else with it. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel.
Chasm was playable on 486 back then. The engine is not "true 3D" like Quake but pretty impressive
I maybe sick as a dog with flu, but I ain’t half as sick as this video!
Entertainingly and thoughtfully narrated. How do you only have 786 subs? Shame there was no mention of how strange the engine is though, being a tile based raycaster like ROTT, masquerading as a full polygon BSP engine.
Thank you!
I'll be honest: I look at games from a more literary perspective and not a technical one, so I didn't even know that. I knew it was weird, but I have no real understanding of how weird it is.
It was a Ukrainian developer? I didnt know Ukraine HAD a game development studio.
That's bizarrerly impressive.
Thanks for the lore.
Never heard of GSC Game World?
Yeah, I was also surprised. One of my personal goals, if I'm ever in a position to do so, is to pick the devs' brain about this game.
The Steam port seems sus cuz it doesn't mention where it was developed exactly.
The devs were Ukrainian. There offices are probably rubble now.
@@bouncingbluesoul5270 Action Forms (the original developers) went out of business 12 years ago, so their old office was long abandoned anyway. The developer of this new remaster was General Arcade, a studio that specializes in ports and is based in Singapore. It was published by SNEG a Polish company from former GOG/CD-Project staff that buys up old IP.
Nah, its more like street fighter than quake.
Chasm is like dos turok 2
I played this game before knowing Quake was a thing. I loved it but I couldn't play it for some reason. Something like the game crashed at some point or hardware limitations. I didn't know we have it on steam, I definitely will try it!
It's a masterpiece in its own right, don't care if they call it a quake clone.
I think you need to read the definition of masterpiece a bit more deliberately.
I am starting to agree. At first I taught it was like Half Life then Quake but it feels like a different game.
Yeah I can see quake being a proto movement shooter. Watch pro deathmatches of quake 3 and the combatants never stop moving.
Here at 715 subs
#GoVinceSteelBattalion
It's more like Backtracking: Snoozefest Edition 3D
Chasm is good in it's own right.
Back in the dos era I really liked this one
It's such a fantastic and bizarre game. I'd like to meet the original developers at some point in my life and pick their brains about making Chasm and why they chose to do some of the things they did.
Ooooooh yeah baby! Nothing like a Vince Steel video on a retro FPS!
What is Adampunk?
Atompunk in a nutshell is dystopia viewed from the lens of 1950s-60s, etc.
@@VinceSteel Atompunk or Adampunk?
chasm is a bit crap
Aren't those weird crossover themes in Chasm clearly references to Hexen 2 and the build engine games (especially Duke and Blood)?
It's something that was in the air in the '90s, not just in video games either.
Powerslave too
