The Atari 5200/Atari 8-bit platform was capable of far better. Sure - the 7800 had updated video hardware, but the 5200 port could have been nearly arcade-perfect. I’d love to see what we could have gotten had the game been finished.
The Atari 7800 version is definitely more challenging than the NES version, but it is a lot of fun. The 7800 version is much more playable on a Sega Genesis controller with an Edladdin Seagull 78 Adapter. It makes a HUGE difference over the awful 7800 joystick.
There was an earlier build of the 5200 version of Xevious, dated October 13, 1983, which had the following differences from the final (yet still unreleased) version: * No title screen * No game options * Your shots are very wide, and glow * Colors are lighter and look faded * Mirror enemy is smaller * Status bar says "Lives Left = 4" instead of "Player 1! 4 Solvalou Left!" * Your ship is gray instead of blue * Different opening theme tune * Firing sound is different * Enemy death sound is different * Landscaping and enemy placement are different * No pause or reset features * Andor Genesis looks slightly different and has four blast holes at the corners when hit * Grobda Tanks look different * Slight pause before the start of each new life * Jara Spinners are intact * No extra lives awarded
Even though the 7800 was using the same sound as the 2600 the sound effects and music here I believe it's better on the 7800 over the 5200. The nes MAY have better graphics over 7800...but I like the graphics on the 7800.
I had Xevious for the 7800. One peculiar glitch I remember about it is if you pressed either button, it would fire the cannon and drop a bomb simultaneously. There was no way to fire the cannon or bombs by themselves. Did this happen for anyone else?

Man, change the palette on the 7800 emulator. That water shouldn't be aquamarine.

The 5200 looks like they borrowed the same code for the 2600. The shooting is very similar.
Xevious on the 5200? Ah, so that's what the inside of a migraine looks like.

A Seagull 78 and Genesis controller, or the euro Atari joypad (CX78).
Hello from 2023. I'm surprised it wasn't released for the XEGS since is was basically the same hardware as Atari 8 bit computers and the 5200.
I'm really surprised that there hasn't been an effort by some homebrew author to take the 5200 version and polish it up.

Have you seen the Atari 2600 Xevious prototype? I think someone found a mostly-complete version not too long ago.
+jgwest1 Whoa, that's pretty interesting. I hadn't heard that. I'll go see if I can find it!

god the graphics sucked
+Slappy Fistwad Yeah, not exactly pretty to look at.
Can I play it with the trackball?
Thanks for the review, I never knew there was a prototype for Devious for the 5200.
*Xevious*.
Xevious is the pioneer and father of shmups, as Shenmue is the pioneer and father of 3D open world.
I wonder if this was a PAL version, hence the really off color palette.
Atari ST port was arcade perfect
