Donkey Kong was never released on the Atari 5200. It was an Atari 800 computer game that was ported much later as a rom-hack by the emulation community.
Just spent a fun couple of hours watching your work! Thank you so much for putting the time and effort into compiling these retro game lists; I've not only thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen, but also learned more about some classic titles. Thank you for the education! :)
Reading comments like this really makes all the hard work worth it glad you where able to discover some classic games you hadn't heard of or seen before. I have many more videos in the pipeline so stay tuned. Thanks again Matt 😊
How do you not have Montezuma's Revenge on this list? Or Dig Dug? Or Missile Command? Super Breakout? Megamania? Joust? Zaxxon? Q Bert? Jungle Hunt? Way too many notable omissions.
I just bought ten Atari 5200 cartridges from a retro game store today, a birthday present to myself. I don't actually own the system, but I might at some point, and it's just fun to have these on my shelf in any case. The software library for this machine is very strong, despite the fact that most of them are identical to their Atari 8-bit cousins. But there are enough games that take advantage of the analog joystick or trackball to make it worth your while.
Gremlins - I liked this game, but I lost more lives to the time limit than to the gremlins. Vanguard - This one looks a lot nicer than the Atari 2600 version, but the control doesn't seem as precise. No, I'm not talking about the stick, but rather the fire buttons. The buttons on my controllers work perfectly in other games, but when I played this game, it didn't always shoot when I wanted it to. Often, I'd press the button while moving the stick, no shot comes out and I crash into the enemy I was trying to shoot. Or maybe it IS related to the stick. Maybe it wasn't registering the direction strongly enough for it to shoot in that direction. I never had that problem with the 2600 version.
Man the speed of vanguard and the timing of the shots looks incredibly frustrating. It reminds me of trying to go back and play the old shooter atari 2600 games and wonder how i did it.
Best games for 5200 are Space Dungeon, Robotron, Defender. Honorable mentions for Dreadnaught Factor and Miner 2049er. I suspect the gamer who made this list isn’t deeply familiar with the 5200 library. As others pointed out, DK wasn’t even released for the 5200.
Miner 2049er? Astro Chase? Star Trek and Star Wars and Star Raiders? Countermeasures? This list is missing all the iconic 5200 games and has too many arcade ports that were just as good on other 8 bit systems.

Spot on, DK should be stricken from the list.

Hell yeah! Good to see you back. Stoked for this list because I never owned this system. Just had a 2600 and a colecovision.
Thanks rangoononline it's great to be back hope you enjoy 😉
@@wizzgamer gremlins existe desde el atari 800xl... mucho antes que el atari 5200

It was a very surface-level list which included Donkey Kong which wasn't even a 5200 game. You are right - Montezuma's Revenge at least...!
Pretty sure that Donkey Kong was a homebrew. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it was ever officially released for the 5200.
Yes! It was a rom hack of an Atari 800 game ported to the 5200. There's a Donkey Kong Jr. rom hack too.
Does it honestly matter at this point?
Homebrew, hack roms and unlicensed can all be included in a list of best games in a consoled so old

Loved pole position on my Atari 130xe . I still play it weekly
Gremlins and Vanguard look amazing! Two games I had never seen before.
I remember beating pitfall II when I was home sick from school. It was awesome
Donkey Kong was never officially released for the 5200
Correct but TBH, the 7800 versions of Donkey Kong & Jr are much better.
Any top 5200 best of list without "Space Dungeon" on it doesnt pass muster and is likely a fraud.
That’s what I was thinking. That and Robotron with the dual sticks is so much fun.
@@type4647 Spot on; 5200 exclusive and maybe the best game in the library.
Bello Centipede👍🏻 mitico
Great list my friend 👊🎮🕹️👾👊
Canal Win Thank you 😊

These games where way ahead of there time
Donkey Kong was on the Atari 8 bit computers not the Atari 5200. So I would have put Kangaroo on the list. Atari 5200 Kangaroo was a good port.
what is the opening song? Its so familiar.
Wish someone answered this. I feel the same way. Sounds like its from a sega game.
@@HippieMumboJumbo i just punched it into google. its sonic, labyrinth zone :)
Hopefully next year, 5200 plus
Gracias 👍
They need to do a 5200 mini

Miner 2049er, Star Wars and Montezuma's Revenge are criminal omissions!!!
Sonic Hedgehog Game Play - Sega

Missing MegaMania!
Space Dungeon
Zaxxon
Does this play 2600 games?
It does via an adapter that is very rare and hard to find these days.
