    I *rarely* see this level of self-awareness & transparency in an influencer. It's the anti-thesis for most, and it's admirable.

    So much respect for you for pointing out how abnormal these extensive "collections" are for the average viewer! I definitely struggled with comparing myself to young beauty gurus as well.

    You are incredible, truly one of a kind on this platform. As a therapist myself, my heart hurts when I hear you say “my fault” when you talk about your adolescence. Try to think of it more as neutral, or “it was what it was,” and be kind to your younger self just trying to stay afloat ❤

      She’s too harsh on herself, lately I’ve seen her down and I am just a follower but I wish she could see how much I relate to her, I was there too and love skincare, she has helped me with my skin and it’s such a kind, honest person. Cassie in case that you read me I want to let you know you are amazing and strong.

    This is the 1st REAL video I’ve seen since a YT dr said that face cleansers should never be expensive + skincare s/b for ur skin type only + if an ‘influencer’ influences u otherwise, they’re influencing their coin, at ur expense. ♥️

      The price is related to how much the company spends in materials, transportation, taxes, empoyees, etc. And is also highly related to demand and inflation. So even if some could be more affordable for some people, they will never be "cheap" as companies that sell "cheap" products always mistreat their employees, underpay them (if they get paid), use bad quality materials, etc.
      And it also depends on the country you are from. If you live in the US you actually have the most options and therefore some of the lowest prices in the world. Competition (capitalism) reduces prices as they have to adapt to "better quality for a better price" idea.
      In my country (Argentina) a usd$20 product is basicaly a luxury, even a usd$10, as an average salary now-a-days doesn't go much higher than usd$200. Imagine a simple facial moisturizer that costs a 10th part of your monthly salary not counting a cleanser, spf, exfolient, soap, hair products, etc. Calculate that. Crazy.
      But well, I guess in the US that's a more realistic expectation.
      No shade or anything, I just wanted to give more context to some prices and to say that "should never be expensive" is quite never truly realistic or necesarily good even if it SOUNDS good.

    Thank you for this. During the pandemic, I started watching beauty content and other content that could be described as influencer driven. At 40 years old, I was old enough to largely have avoided it until stress, depression, and loneliness sent me to YT more than I ever had been before. The result was an insane amount of time, money, and energy spent on stuff. Mostly stuff I didn't need. It isn't all bad. My skin has never looked better, and my makeup is more polished. However, I did end up with credit card debt and new found insecurity because of it.
    These days, I rarely watch influencer content (including yours, I'm sorry) because I struggle to remember that I don't need stuff to make me better. Therapy is helping with that!
    Curiosity had me clicking on this, and I really appreciate it. If my current routine stops working for me, yours is a channel I would seek for recommendations!

    • @BarbaraT.
      @BarbaraT. 11 месяцев назад +3

      I relate to your comment a lot. I'm a few years older than you and I started watching skincare channels probably during covid. I've learnt so much about skincare and ingredients, I've learnt to take better care of my skin (something I thoroughly enjoy these days, whereas before I did only half heartedly). However, I've realised that watching all these videos, where different products are presented every time, has led me to want them all! I've been spending so much money on toners, serums, moisturisers... I do use them, but I definitely buy more than I need. I think I need to put a stop to it. I just hope that I can. My latest purchase was just yesterday 😢

    • @lael5327
      @lael5327 11 месяцев назад

      @BarbaraT. I get it! I have faith that you can do it. If it helps, I realized that my skin really improved when I simplified and stopped changing my routine all the time. That has encouraged me to stop buying new things. Also, I do not watch as much beauty related content. Way less temptation!

    Bless you Cassandra! Keep on keeping on being you to the core. Enjoy your inner journey. I wish that I had started mine at your age. But no regrets, I am 61 and have a beautiful life to which I give credit to starting therapy in my 30s.
    I pride myself in stepping off of the consumer rat wheel in recent years. Only to enter the RUclips skincare consumer mentality in the last couple of months in search of a solution for my dry eyelids. I did find the solution - Vaseline. But in the process also found myself sucked back into the consumer vortex of all of the products that I need to buy to be the best version of myself - outward looking.
    Because I too experienced the trauma of teenage acne and have very sensitive skin (which I often wonder might be attributed to stripping my skin in my teens), I have a very minimalist routine. When I step back, I realize that I could benefit from incorporating different ingredients in my skincare routine for the period of life that I find myself in. Do you do online consults?
    Thank you for being vulnerable with your viewers and for approaching skincare from a results based focus as opposed to consumer based focus.

    I relate to your story so much. I’m so glad when I grew up internet addicted in the 2000s things weren’t like they are now. I did so much comparing of myself to other online but none of the people I followed on bebo or MySpace or tumblr, no one showed you as hardcore detail about their lives, what they owned, what they did, what their houses were like. It was hard enough to compare myself and what I didn’t have to the wealthier people in my life in real life let alone on the internet!!
    I’m so thankful you’re talking about this. I remember in my early 20s when beauty RUclips started with the collection videos and I would compare what I owned to how much people who were working makeup artists had!! What the heck!!
    Creators like you who are sent, buy, and test products have so many so that the rest of us can buy less and be informed about what is more likely to work for us before we try it ourselves. I’m older and wiser enough to know that now. I hope younger people who had experiences like I did are able to learn that so the painful comparison and things you end up doing to feel like you can measure up aren’t as harmful as they had been in the past.
    Thanks Cassandra! This video hit so close to home for me. You rock

    A beautiful communication. Thank you. I would add that it is not just the 16 year-old who suffers. This is a cycle that can follow one into their adulthood, especially now, when so much information about what people have - not just on their shelves - but in the information they share on Facebook, Instagram, and all of the other media outlets. So many people feel lesser, undervalued, unsupported, and misunderstood. It is a critical world where, despite all of the stoves to open up culturally and racially, we still define each other through a filtered, limited microscope.

As someone who went into her friends shower and took a picture of all her products bc “goals” it’s so easy to compare. My skin is close to flawless and there is nothing to pick at. This bad habit of escaping through picking turned into awesome rituals of trying product, taking care of my skin, and watching it recover from enlarged pores, acne and scars, I can finally start being confident and this means so much!! I constantly feel like I’m wanting / needing things to achieve some level but those things don’t make u happy in the end, you have to be happy with yourself. I really don’t think there is much benefit or point to it like your saying, when I see so many beauty creators just buy stuff bc it’s trendy, I think it’s so insane how much stuff they have and how it never probably even gets used. It isn’t something everyone should be trying to achieve. If it works for you & your lifestyle than that’s great! but for the average human it’s not needed. Thank you for being you! 🤍🫶🏻😊

    The reason why this is the only skincare channel I keep following nowadays (unfollowed all the Hyrams, Welsh, whatever channels...) is that it still has a touch with reality. Has insight. Self appraisal. And reasonably connects with the followers on more than a superficial levels... I believe this topic will resonate with many people, and I very much appreciate Cassandra talking about it.

    I appreciate this so much. It can be difficult, even as an older person to try to feel a part of online communities with people who have similar interests and likes, when you're disabled and living under the poverty line, as hard as I try not to compare myself or my life circumstances to others. Consumerism is everywhere be it via subscriptions, donations, products, collections, trips, talks about ordering delivery or going to restaurants, etc etc. There's nothing wrong with talking about those aspects of life, it's absolutely normal! But then on the other hand the more of that is featured or discussed within whatever community, the more of an outsider I feel, because of my personal circumstances.
    Anyway, I love that you have this insight and are doing so much to share your experiences with both skincare and mental health and personal growth!

    I just love you! I don’t always agree with you. But I always learn so much! I love science. Watching your content has led me to some great products. For the first time ever I’m actual using the whole container for skin care products I love! For this video I understand your point and total agree with your reasoning! Well thought out! Positive influencer, I cannot get enough of your helpful influences!

    @cassandrabankson I relate to this. Unfortunately, I have not evolved out of the materialist fulfillment phase yet… but there’s always hope. I relate to you and I appreciate you for being so transparent and honest. Thank you.

    You are not crazy for this at all. Those skincare collection videos definitely are fueled by the viewers' desires for materialism. I respect you for making this point and not worsening that mental health problem.

    I agree with your decision on not showing your skincare collection. I did watch an earlier video regarding K beauty and I did the research and ordered from Stylevana and I love everything I use now, which cost less and is better for my skin. Thank you for that!

    I can totally relate to your insecurities growing up. For the longest time I thought it was just me because I, too, used to compare myself to those pretty girls at school who had everything. Then high school happened and I started to get zits, acne. As if I weren't insecure enough; let's just put some diarrhea icing on that shit cake!!! Somehow I survived. Now, I finally know not to compare myself to others, but sometimes that old monster rears its ugly head. Habits are not always so easy to beat. Now, I'm really into skincare because I used to be jealous of the actors in school that got to wear the pancake makeup even though everybody told me, "NO" that's not the answer and will only make it worse. By the time I got it fixed after two rounds of Accutane, I was so happy!!! ---- Really glad to see that you are doing better because I was just watching a video from two months ago and you seemed really depressed but were hiding it really well. Breakup? Heartbreak? Either way, you're so strong and I knew that you would pull through whatever it was. Glad you're back to yourself!!! You deserve to be happy!!!
