The Benelux was the first European Union between nations in Europe.
Depending on definitions maybe. My candidate would be the Kalmar Union of the 1400s, but I find it likely that there are earlier ones.
Then maybe Poland-Lithuania union which formally dates to 1569, but one could argue that it started in 1370… a tiny bit older.

Comments getting silly. The Kalmar Union and Poland-Lithuania are examples of personal unification (i.e. the unification of multiple monarchies due to a single person carrying multiple titles), which has nothing to do with the will of the people.
Also, the Continental System is another name for the Continental Blockade that Napoleon tried to impose on the British. Surely you just mean the First French Empire, that is, all the countries conquered by Napoleon in which he installed puppet monarchs, united under the French flag... which is unification through conquest and has nothing to do with the will of the people.
The Benelux was a customs union and an intergovernmental co-operation made up of democratic countries. It was the live test of many principles we see in the European Union today. It has several intergovernmental institutions which regulate co-operation in various fields including infrastructure, trade, energy, intellectual property rights, and many more. Plus, it remains intergovernmental, which is to say, all participants keep their sovereignty. Which can't be said for unification through conquest OR personal unification.
Actually, the Dutch Senate is elected by the 12 Provincial Parliaments.
It used to be, but there are now also the island municipalities and special representatives from abroad voters.

As an Italian and a strong pro-European I can partially understand the discomfort that the Dutch have in paying for funds that are misused in other European countries. In Italy a famous Facebook page that denounces the bad way in which European funds are spent is called "things that Dutch taxpayers can't wait to pay"
So I believe that there should be funds for less developed countries, but at the same time it is good to make sure that they are spent well.

Or that the agricultural sector is going to collapse without the labor force that's from across the EU. Then suddenly people want to stay.
I'm from Enschede, about the 17th or 18th largest city of the Netherlands, and it's on the border with germany. Together with a handful of other municipalities from the netherlands and from Germany they formed the Euregio. from a young age, about 8, I moved from the netherlands to the first village over accross the border. I went to school in NL, then in DE, then in NL again (the base language is kinda important to follow a suitable level of education). For many many years on my moped i crossed the border 4 times a day 6 days a week. This Euregio concept of municpalities and regional governments forming cross-national institutions has been implemented so far about in 80 instances accross Europe!
During the chaotic first quarantiens of the pandamic, this piece of border remained uniquely open and free due to communication between Enschede and Münster being better than between between enschede and The Hague, and between Münster, Onsabruck and their respective federal state capitals.
The idea that the prospering netherlands (who historically have extracted so so much wealth from the world) is paying the EU an unreansably amount seems silly to me. It surely must be less than the wealth granted by access to the single market and Schengen. But even if it were, helping the rest of europe prosper, will only help us out in the long term, especially in a multipolar geopolitical landscape where a tiny nations such as the netherlands would certainly find itself on the receiving side of what we have economically dealt out historically....
The netherlands, within the quasi-federation that is the Benelux (to which Nord-Rhein Westphalen was in on the earliest formation talks, in order to join) within the something inbetween confederation-federation that is the European union, sown tightly through Euregions, would be absolutely devestated upon leaving the EU.
My hometown, to which masses of german tourist flock weekly, on to where thousands commute to for work or study from germany, would be economically and socially devestaded to a similiar scale as to when the textiles industry moved over seas or when the allies accidentally bombed it (they thought they were already flying over germany, navigating by stars and the lights of ciies) if we the netherlands left the EU.
Fun fact, Gelderland comes from the German town Geldern, it was part of the Duchy of Geldern's area which nowadays is Gelderland and Nord-Rhein Westphalen. While Geldern used to be the capital this was later changed to the larger city of Arnheim.

i agree that the amount of spending is not an issue, and is largely beneficial to everyone. Most people take issue seeing the aid money being wasted. To them it feels like they work hard and get taxed a lot, but the aid money gets pissed in the wind when it arrives.
The Netherlands is a key member of the EU. One of the first countries to realize that we can not be isolated from our neighbors after WWII and we see that the majority of the population wants common political agenda in major EU issues. Something that more countries need to recognize before it's too late.
And it will be the second country to realize they don't want to be occupied by an all encompassing European state, and leave.

@@TrazynnIt's economical suicide. Rotterdam will be completely abolished when leaving the EU making Antwerpen probably the new Rotterdam. Export from our farmers will be crippled entirely (60% is export, and you can expect that to be reduced by over half). Our fishermen won't be able to fish in common waters anymore. Closed borders will cripple our already massive workers shortage. All with all, it makes 0 sense to leave the Union.
Looking at the UK most people who voted in favour feel betrayed by Boris Johnson's promises and see Brexit as a complete failure.

@@erik7853 Immigration hasn’t caused any real damage so far. The only economic damage we’ve seen from immigration are due to strict labor rules applying to refugees put in place by our right-leaning government. That’s fully unrelated to the EU. Not only that, our economy has grown and our crime rates have dropped significantly despite our increase in migrant-population percentages (26% as of today). The whole idea that immigration is killing our country is a populist illusion based on misinformations and hyperboles based on exceptions like Ter Apel.
The Netherlands also doesn’t suffer a lot from EU laws. With western European countries having the most influence on EU lawmaking most new laws and regulations are in line with existing Dutch policies and mainly target southern and eastern European countries to close the gap in wealth and progressivism between the east and west.
I visited Sint Eustatius and Saba a few years ago. Beautiful places and wonderful people, I hope they will become EU citizens within 20 years, along with all the French oversea islands. ❤❤❤

I visited Bonaire, Curacao Sintmaarten and Saba a few years ago! Couldnt visit Sint Eustatius and Aruba due to covid. You can only get to Saba with a certain small propeller plane since the landing strip is only like 80 metres long. Bonaire is my favorite island of the bunch

Countries can't be in Schengen if they're not in the EU. They're not the same thing but one is a prerequisite for the other.

@@erik7853 That's a shallow basis for an argument. Switzerland (And Norway) are in Schengen because they accept the jurisdiction of the ECJ and submit themselves to a wide range of EU regulations. They are EU rule takers even if they aren't members.

Strength is in numbers, and for that reason the EU should grow, not schrink. If the EU would fall apart, we would be all play balls for Russia, China and the US. That can *NEVER* happen.
I as a Dutch person live in Portugal where we receive more from the EU than we contribute. I can imagine that the Netherlands are sometimes wondering what the use of the EU is when we pay so much money. Well the fact that we CAN pay that much money is due to the EU. We need stability, no one will benefit from going back in time. Brexit anyone?
I used to be in favor of referendums, but that was when I was young and naive. For the sake of stability in democracy, we need to vote only once every 4 years. We as a society cannot affort to sacrifice our stability and peace by te destructive force of populism. I surely hope that Geert Wilders will manage to form a government. Not because I like Geert Wilders, there are few people on this planet that I hate more than Geert Wilders. A man that has done literally NOTHING for the Netherlands in all those decades that he is in the parliament but costing a lot of tax money for personal security. He NEVER has taken responsibility and the only thing he has done, is make empty promises that mean nothing if you don't have to justify anything.
I hope he will form a government to proove for once and for all that populism and xenofobia are NOT the answer. The answer is in making solid choices to build the country. Build houses, structure social security by making it fully transparent and eliminate bureaucracy. For every dumb rule we have, aks our selves, WHY do we have this rule and is it still required or are there other ways to achieve things. Social care that can only be funded by the government with your tax money because it is comercially not possible to finance it, should NOT be executed by privatized commercial institutions that are worried about their profit and year results. Those two cannot go together and will allways lead to extortion of either the vultnerable clients / patients, or the vulnerable workers that always have to do more with less.
The government should be manageing what is not commercially viable, and keep their hands off of everything that is, unless it can make them a shitload of money to give back to the citizens. (I still don't understand why the Dutch government has chosen to make Shell rich with their gas and not exploit this to the full themselves to give it back to the people instead of making a few stock holders very very rich).
So fuck Wilders, let him rule and fail, get over with it and then get back to normal business without Populist Wilders or other psychopath-narcissistic persons that dissatisfied underdevelloped people waste their right to vote on.

I agree 100% with you. The same happened in Italy. Here the far right continues to have a lot of support, but it seems that the more Eurosceptic positions have been abandoned. There are 2 far-right parties in government, fortunately the most pro-Putin party is the minority one, while the largest one has moved from post-fascist positions to simply conservative right-wing positions.
All remaining candidate counties are poor and require a lot of funding. Growing the eu means that we must pay more to the eu. Given the dutch are very conservative about their money, this is a hard ask.
We are doing well, but it also came at a cost. When the switch to € was made, there was an instant inflation, because the guilder was valued too low. Later a lot of funding was needed to support the south of europe. I also heard rumors about the eu wanting to have access to (the dutch) retirement funds. We have a lot of migrants that have an impact om the housing market.
So, there are people asking whether those payments to the eu are a good investment. Maybe there are ways to get more out of the cooperation.
Like for germany building better railway connection to accomedate more transport by rail. Or other project that will need dutch expertise or businesses.

I'm Dutch and I am pro EU. Because my intrest in History I figured out that since the fall or the roman empire Europe was in contant turmoil till the end of WW2. Yeah the cold war happened but no real big conflicts arose when the EU was formed between its members. Its expansion meant that more nations actually became more peaceful. That is a big achievement. Sadly there is still conflict with the non members, but as a whole western Europe is really peaceful.
Which is why war broke out with the Brits as soon as the UK left...

@@teaser6089 Actually after the conquest of Britain. You get a time period where the inner empire is peacefull militairy speaking. Only a few minor skirmishes with Barbarians but nothing else. When Rome split in two troubles began to rose again. Or am I missing something?

There needs to be much stricter mechanisms to deport illegal immigrants. however, even if nothing changes, NL is still better off within the EU than outside it. the loss of exports would be much larger than the cost of EU contributions. Even DE would not survive outside the EU if the rest of the block stays intact. an island of trade tariffs would make NL products completely uncompetitive within the EU. Parties like BBB would implode given how much dutch farmers export. if all their products are suddenly 2x as expensive, its game over

The Netherlands thinks bigger than it is, it often wants to be the largest of all the smaller EU countries, in order to compete economically and politically with Germany, France and the UK.
Dutch governments have always had the tradition of wanting to be the best in the EU. As soon as new EU rules were drawn up, the Dutch immediately adopted and implemented them. But then it often turns out that many other EU countries do not adhere to the rules, especially in the financial field, the Dutch feel cheated. And when the Netherlands then points out to other EU countries why they do not adhere to the rules, the Netherlands is extremely hated. Something the Dutch don't understand.
The Dutch are very pro-EU, but would rather see countries that do not comply or cannot fulfill them to leave the EU. The Netherlands is always very strict when it comes to finances, their motto is often if there is no money, you can't spend anything. Many Dutch people also think that many subsidies to EU countries are not spent correctly and efficiently.
When you spend 7 billion euros more on the EU than you get out of it, it's kinda understandable you get a bit anal on finances with countries that, put very gently, don't quite have a similar financial discipline, isn't it?
When certain countries keep messing up their financial households, the bill comes to lie with the net contributors. Fine if you have to pay that bill once, a second time becomes a bit annoying, and you're pretty much fed up with it after the third time.

The Senate (First Chamber of States-General) is not elected by local councils, but elected by the members of the twelve provincial councils (Provinciale Staten) and four electoral colleges for the Senate. Each provincial council and the electoral colleges for the senate has a weighted electoral vote based on population.
Members of the provincial council are directly voted in place by inhabitants of those provinces, in the 4 yearly provincial elections.
As a Dutch i can confirm that a lot of Dutch don't agree about how you portrait our stance regarding the EU. With the statistical magic you do make it look differently than the actual reality.
Mark Rutte will somehow be missing. As a German, I'm not so well versed in Dutch politics, but for me he was the national face.
Mark Rutte left one big mess behind in The Netherlands... The only real good thing he could do was pushing big problems forward... Until it bit him in the ass. Right now he tries to flee to the NATO.

I do not think that the Netherlands stands to gain anything at all from leaving the EU. It's true, they are a net contributor to the EU. So what? They have a strong economy, and a strong economy needs a highly-skilled labour force. I am from Spain, and I am currently interviewing with a dutch company and it is highly probable that I will move to the Netherlands in the next month. My university education has been payed by the Spanish taxpayers, and I am autonomously learning the language even though it is not required for my job. I think it is fair enough, I do not want to live in Spain, I like the Netherlands as a country and if I do end up working there, I will pay my taxes, obviously.

Unless the EU will reform and enforce stricter monitairy discipline from the Southern European countries the Netherlands might start funding less projects.

Talks have already resumed for weeks. Today, the party leaders announced they will stay in parliament and will not become ministers or the prime-minister. Not the most up-to-date video.. at all.
It was only logical that the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg formed the Benelux (which is still effective, by the way) as we used to form one country.
Just to start off with:
I'm a dutch, left leaning voter. In the last election, I voted for the pro-european centrist party Volt, and I did the same the election before.
Personally I am of the meaning that the populist right movement of the netherlands is something that has no real ways to benefit either the citizens, the country at large, or even our standing within the EU. I'm afraid it'll only hurt it.
22 years ago, the last Left leaning dutch government was in power. And ever since, with a mostly right government, we've seen failings in our public transport getting way beyond expensive while most small towns are becoming disconnected from the network, our healthcare dwindling, hospitals closed en mass and more.
The worst part is that all of this, the populist movements somehow blame on the "Left" parties, and social media websites like Facebook, Instagram and X make this sentiment all the worse by being a populist echo chamber.
The public sentiment of a lot of "true dutch" people (Sadly including my family) is that the netherlands is being ruined by immigration and islam. But the only experience those people really have with that, is as said, their own preconceptions and the echo chamber that is social media.
I think that in general, Social Media should be banned for the good of all countries because of the influence it has in pushing people to an extreme.
Personally I don't agree with the idea of abolishing social media, the problem is people, not the media. What people need to learn is to distinguish fake news from real news. The older generation is less likely to believe fake news because they struggle to distinguish good sources from bad ones. The idea of banning social media seems to me like burning the books in the novel Farenheit 451, we cannot be afraid that people will come into contact with certain ideas, we must ensure that people have the antibodies to be able to distinguish good from evil.

Bulgaria and Romania are entering Schengen by air and sea March 31st of this year. Target date for land borders now is December 1st of this year according to some EU publications. That's the matter it yet should be discussed about, after EU elections in June.

I always find that when it comes to pro EU or Eurosceptics, what really matters is what the public think and not what's going on in politics, the political side of things is always limited by what the public allows, being that the people of the Netherlands are pro EU and support in certain areas for more integration, will make it difficult for an Eurosceptic party to pull them out of the EU.
Reforms are clearly needed on the EU, especially on the veto rules, As I can't see how the EU can expand with more members until there are changes to the veto rule or it's scraped, I also think further integration is going to be needed because of the political and economic realities of the changing world, as in, if we want to protect our political, economic and social interest, we need to find solutions to speaking more with one voice at an EU level, especially on military, defence and forign policy matters, but other areas like energy could be more streamlined.
The real question is what reforms to do to the EU and how to go about it.
Personally, I think more powers need to be given to the European Parliament, whereas the EU Commission and President should merge, maybe even be elected directly by the people, but I think the European Parliament should have more of a say as power is shared over far more people, making it democratic, whereas the current system of the EU Commission, feeds the Eurosceptics in making the EU look less democratic, and I think that is one area the EU needs to resolve, make the EU more democratic and more connected to the people so there is less ammunition for the Eurosceptic argument.

The EU is extremely important for the Netherlands mostly economical more then anything. The Netherlands has since it's creation functioned almost more like a mercantile thing then a real government. We live in prosperity due to our exports, and then I do not just mean food or products or whatever but also "experts" and developments in many fields. Our economy and many other things are driven by the contact with other country's and by enlarge the EU. I see the payment we make almost like a global scale toll bridge. We would like many changes but our way of life is simply not supported without the EU so we cannot take to drastic actions.
Being part of the EU does make us able to have a lightweight army budget for example, so it is not like a lot of the 7bil are not at least partially going directly back into the money pot.

Kidding aside, there is *no way* the Netherlands will part from the EU, or that Wilders will even suggest it again in the near future. There's way too much money at stake for business on every level ,and everyone is seeing the effects of Brexit. The only thing that Wilders, and subsequently his voters really want - is more say on a national level on particularly immigration policies, which are currently largely dictated by the EU.

about the Netherlands spending the 3rd highest on EU, although it is a pretty high price. the benefits we get from trading within EU and the deals we can make because of it, make a pretty good return on our investments. all in all its a little high but still fair.

The shared monetary policy without strong political control will be problematic for the people in the Netherlands. It is far too tempting for EU governments to exceed spending agreements. Because doing so has electoral upside with little or no electoral downside. The result is systematic overspending in some countries. This incurred debt is partly shared by all EU nations through various ECB 'instruments'. One of the problems is that the ECB does not have any direct democratic oversight. Another is that you can't have shared debt without shared responsibility. The two solutions I see are directly opposed to each other. Either further political integration so that financially responsible governments get a say over the budget of less responsible governments. Or the opposite, where there is no further sharing of debt, and the ECB severely limits its interference.
I grew up in the east and left the country before covid. I'm disappointed that Geert Wilders will be taking over from Rutte, I liked Rutte a lot more then Balkenende. If Geert Wilder will steer the country in the direction he wants rather then what's best for the country I'd be impressed that he'd be capable of staying true to his word as I currently believe him to be full of hot air without any plans on how to make it a reality.
I also have full confidence that the NL and the EU will be fine even in the worst of cases, there is very little that can disrupt our little utopian corner. To me the NL is paradise on earth, nowhere else compares to the flat home and I hope I'm still allowed back in later ;)

@@tim3440 perhaps it refers to the controversy of courses in English, while they would like to have more courses in Dutch. Which as an Italian almost makes me laugh since here courses in English are the exception and not the rule, but this has never caused major problems.
I can try to hypothesize that even if the Dutch have a very good command of English, with academic terms (which in English are mostly of Latin derivation) things may change, the opposite of what happens in Italy where the English academic terms they are among the simplest, while colloquial English is very difficult.

Im from the netherlands and i am neutral about the EU I do think that its kinda holding us back a little bit
as someone who voted for VOLT; during recent elections, it saddens me to constantly see the amount of hate the EU receivers; Constant bickering amonst ourself because everybody thinks someone is being treated unfairly; nothing gets actually done & problems we're facing are rapidly growing out of proportion because of the constant disagreement amongst each other. The NL hosts too many political parties (this is due to my believes that it's too easy to create a political group) the centers don't get along with the left & the rights hate the left.
It's mindbreaking sometimes; when someone thinks of left they think of immigration & climate change. When they think of right they think of people first & isolation; it always manages to suprise me how narrow minded the Dutch are on average.
We as a whole can get so much more done if we were to close the political gap & would definitely improve living conditions... but maybe in 10 years.
