As a romanian, id say Iohannis as leader of the comission would be quite a shock. Here he is very unpopular because he was generaly a hands off president.
And more than that, he is disliked bh the fact he allowed the PSD to return to goverment despite the fact he promised at his re-election that he will never do that

My main concern is, whoever is chosen must first and foremost be a staunch Europeanist. Ideally, someone who regardless of political affiliation, once in office will care for the EU's interests as whole (even though this is "easier said than done" because member-states have more influence than others and will always bicker among themselves).

As a romanian, I can tell that Iohannis is HATED in Romania. He is very unpopular here because of his arrogance. He frequently goes in international tours with rented private jets (his schedule is very lite) and says that the price of his travels are state-secrets and doesn't publish them. The last time he was in an interview in press was in like 2018.

Romanian here.... There will be a lot of anti-Iohannis comments from USR-voters but just ignore them. The Romanian constitution doesn't give the president the prerogatives that they imagine it does. Iohannis did a great job considering he wields very little power in the state. Romanians in general lack even the most fundamendal understanding of the consititutional order of the state. They show up to vote in large number for the presidential elections but then forget to vote in the parliamentary elections because they "don't trust the parliament". But the parliament votes on who the prime minister is and the prime-minister has all the power in Romania. Romanian here: Believe me, externally Klaus Iohannis is praised by nearly the entire western world but when it comes to internal politics, he only manages to continuously hit historic lows for his public trust. His lack of transparency (a core european value) when it comes to presidential spending practices and also lack of communication / general inactivity as head of state since his last election in 2019 only made him more and more unpopular.
ALSO, even though during his presidency, Romania didn t have a hard right gov., current polls show that the next parliament is set to have about more than a fifth of its seats taken by right wing, eurosceptic, parties, with Klaus Iohannis being seen as one of the main causes of this rise. (due to his unpopularity, opposition has generally taken a more anti western rhetoric). Remember, in 2015, Romania had no explicitly right wing party in parliament, now in 2024, it not only has, but that is also set to grow.
Please, if you care about the EU, as much as it pains me to say, do not even think, (let alone trust) Iohannis for the EC President position. - and that applies to NATO also

If the EP elections, as polls predict, have the EPP losing ground to more conservative parties. I except that ECR will become kingmaker. Key for Von der Leyden is support from the Polish PIS party, currently in opposition at home and Italy’s FDI party which is in power. If Von der Leyden has done a deal with Italy’s PM Meloni she should make it. If not, the EPP will need another option, possibly Sweden’s Karl Bildt or Ireland’s Leo Varadkar.

Imagine a scenario where Joe Biden would unite the Republican and Democratic parties into one electoral alliance against democracy and then dissapear only to give short and sporadic arrogant interviews. Why should we export such a toxic, spineless person to the EU? He totally ignored us as a president, we are too small for his EU dreams. When von der Leyern was chosen to her position, the political situation was much calmer. It was easier to find a candidate that most could get behind.
Now on the other hand, people are incredibly polarized. Even people supporting EU integration hate each other for reasons that don't even matter in the EU-context, so they let these more petty reasons to get in the way.
But why I do believe Leyern should be changed, is because having someone for more than two terms in that position is too long.
I think Iohannis should become the head of NATO, he is more suited to that since it doesn't even demand that much popular support.
