  • LMS 46233 The Duchess of Sutherland was at the helm of 2nd Railway Touring Companies railtour " The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express " from London Euston to Carlisle via Shap summit and back again over the Settle and Carlisle line . The tour started with two class 47's ( 47237 & 47746 ) taking the train to Carnforth with 46233 taking over from there .The first shot sees the 46233 attacking the 1 in 75 gradient at a very snowy scenic Shap Wells with driver Peter Kirk on the regulator. The return would see a snowy Birkett Common as 46233 attacks the climb towards Aisgill summit . I decided to do Birkett again as with the snow being around and it's not often the Duchess is out in the snow at this time of year .Not my best pan at Shap wells so sorry for any wobbles .

I remember being on Shap that day with tripod and cameras shooting this event and getting frozen into the bargain while waiting for the Duchess’ arrival. Your lovely video, Stephen, has brought back happy memories of a great day out at a place which, living over here, now, I will probably never see again. Thanks for posting.

Fabulous Steve - great pan at Shap, in difficult cold conditions and with a slow moving subject. Birkett is heavenly - at least the sun stayed half out - stunning mix of performance and superb weather conditions. Many thanks, David.

wow Stephen, 16 bogies, what would the weight be? I have read 2 stories of Princess Coronations that i dont know if you can verify: one that they once had 2 firemen in full swing, but still couldnt get the maximum out of the loco,& that one actually beat Mallards record, but only by 0. 25 mph, so they did not bother to claim it??

There was a great biography written by a signableman on the Settle and Carlisle but I can't remember the name. I remember him writing that the ionosphere would sometimes set the bells ringing by setting up induction currents in the telegraph wires. One he heard a single 'ting' and had the intuition that a loco was off the rails and had brought down wires. And he was right, setting all the boards to danger preventing disaster. Something told him it wasn't the atmosphere that was playing tricks. He could not say how he knew, he just did!

@@TheStephengthompson It's not whether she needed it, but Network Rail regulations require all steam drawn historic trains to have a backup Diesel Loco in case the Steam Loco fails as the local franchise operators don't have the expertise or equipment to link to a historic train.
