The Long Drag . The hard climb from Hellifield to Aisgill summit .

- With the Settle & Carlisle line now fully reopened after the major landslip at Eden Brows I decided to put together footage taken over the last seven years covering the climb from Hellifield to Aisgill summit with a steady 1 in 100 climb . A tough climb that would severely test the crew and loco .Seen in the video are 45690 Leander , 46115 Scots Guardsman , 46233 Duchess of Sutherland , 60009 Union of South Africa , The Great Marques, 61994, 8F48151,45699 Galatea,44932, 45497 The Lancashire Fusilier and 44871 . Thanks to my friend Phil for allowing me to use two shots of his at Hellifield and Settle Junction.Apologies for two clips with mono sound as I forgot to duplicate the sound in the editing plus the sound on 61994 could have been better .
Ais Gill Summit - amazing that the Philistines have not had their hands on that board and changed it to metres above sea level. Maybe they have by now. And who nowadays would trust a humble Black 5 to take 12 coaches unassisted on that route? But there it is..Some wonderful classic locations and filming from what I still see as a bygone era. Thank you for putting it all together for our enjoyment. It is much appreciated.
You made me feel nostalgic of the old days when the powerful steam locos of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway here in Argentina, used to speed through my home town of Junin, off in a cloud of smoke and steam to link up with the Transandean Railway and up across the Andes to Chile. Not to mention that my Father was top assistant to the Chief Mechanical Engineer, and so I learned a lot about railways. Nowadays , down here, all those tracks and shopa and materiel, a pitiful shambles. Your video: A lovely, professional set of films: And fascinating scenery. Thanks a lot !
Do you know the 601 in Santiago?
Saludos.
Thanks Gerald , sorry for the late response ☹️Really pleased you enjoyed the video that brought back memories 👍
Anyone who thought this compilation wasn't first class would be deluding themselves. Love the shots ending at about 9:20. Plus no diesel assistance, and few road vehicles visible so remoteness is possible in a small island with c.67 million inhabitants.
Thanks Edmund, very kind words indeed and much appreciated 👍
a kind of calm happiness descends on me whenever I watch this. Had a bad day or feeling miserable? This'll cure what ails ya
Thanks Rufus , pleased it makes you feel good on a bad day 😊
This is probably my favorite film of steam on the Settle & Carlisle. Some amazing footage accompanied by great sound in spectacular locations. An absolute triumph, well done and thank you!
My pleasure and I’m pleased you enjoyed it. Regards Steve
I made this trip, Settle to Carlisle, with Leander. Later that year I visited the rail stations by car, (including a trip to the Ribblehead viaduct) and catch two trains in the way! and now you gave me the opportunity to see the landscapes...Thank you. As a big fan of the steam trains, I am happy with this video.
My pleasure 👍Sorry for the late response.
Well filmed, well edited. That opening shot is a real treat. Well Done!
Thanks Geoffrey , pleased you enjoyed it and I’m very sorry for the late response. Regards Steve
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you spent making this. A wonderful vidoe with so much quality.
Thanks Eddie, I must apologise for the extremely late response.
This must be the best British steam compilation on RUclips: I've not found better. Your eye for framing a scene is particularly impressive. One man's eye can bring pleasure to many.
Thanks for the very kind words indeed . I do try and frame the setting rather than using a lot of zoom but I suppose everyone is different . Regards Steve
Just found this, brilliant, great filming SGT and your closing shot is fabulous. Well done that man!
Absolutely amazing I especially enjoyed the snow footage. Thank you
Thanks for the very kind comment and you can't go far wrong with steam and snow . Steve
Superb video Steve. From your great collection of clips over the years. Kind regards C&A
Thanks C&A , the hard bit was digging all the shots off the hard drive LOL .
Oh!..By the way,I keep coming back to this brilliant compilation like a moth to a flame. It is absolutely superb. Magnificent work.
Thanks Allison , pleased you enjoyed it. Steve
Steve, you have excelled yourself (again). A real feast of steam. Thanks very much, and to Phil., too.
Thanks Alan , I had planned this video some time ago after I did the Southern run video .
Fantastic, could watch all day but got things to do! Well done thank you good vids,!
Thanks Richard, pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Absolutely awesome collection of shots. thanks for sharing your experience Cheers Richard
Thanks Richard, pleased you enjoyed the video and I’m sorry for the late response.
Superb shots in this compilation! It is amusing to see the flocks of sheep running for cover when the big locos drive by.
Thanks Dallas , the sheep don’t seem to like the noise that’s for sure lol
Your videos are moving "old masters" you are a video artist of the highest degree, fabulous...
Thanks Raymond, your kind comment is very much appreciated 👍
Spectacular video. Superb sound. The locomotives are impressive. The scenery is gorgeous. And I had a little chuckle seeing the sheep on the fields run away when the trains were approaching. You truly captured the spirit of the steam age.
Thanks for the kind comments as they are much appreciated. Very sorry for the late response. Regards Steve
The sounds are magic to the ears brilliant clips
Excellent compilation, thanks!
Thanks John , pleased you liked the action .
Awesome footage I was a fireman on a lot of these engines the sound is perfect
Thanks Elizabeth , you must have some fantastic memories from firing these beasts . Steve
I have only just picked up this compilation and what a wonderful job it is. i would say it is one of if not the best i have viewed for a long time. i particularly liked the new locations for me anyway for a familiar route. favourites - to many really although i did like No 9 at the end of the compilation. also if was so good to view quality video with real quality sound. thank you very much
Thanks Bill , I do try and find new locations as best I can from time to time . Regards Steve
Brilliant, no other word will do. Just, brilliant!
What could be better? LMS (mainly) locos working hard, the sinuous curves of the tracks, beautiful landscapes - and superb photography. Thank you.
Thanks Rod , bit lucky living nearby the S&C I must admit 👍
Interesting Locations. Hard Working Locomotive. Handsome Trains. Great Video. Thanks.
Thanks Austin, glad you enjoyed the video.
Wonderful shots ! Well done !
Thanks Jasper , pleased you liked the video . Steve
Great video. Nice compilation of scenic shots.
Thanks for the very kind comment as it's much appreciated . Regards Steve
Great footage! I love it.
Thanks Frank , much appreciated comment . Steve
this must be one of the best tributes to the S and C on the net. Unbelievable footage, and much appreciated here in Germany. Thank you!
Thanks Philip , pleased you liked my efforts over the years . Regards Steve
Terrific stuff. Well done.
Great footage, loved it...
Thanks Ray , sorry for the very late reply.
My attention was pulled from the trains to the ancient bridges for unused roads, to wondering how on earth all those stone walls could be built then to watching sheep scatter...beautiful!
Thanks for the kind comments as they are much appreciated. Sorry for the late reply.
Superb Footage I was a fireman on a lot of these engines and the sound is perfect
Thanks Elizabeth , I bet those were cracking but hard work days . Regards Steve
Excellent video ... well done.
Cheers John , pleased you enjoyed the video . Steve
13:45 looks very windy!
Cracking job Stephen you're a king of railway filming
Thanks Olan , it was a bit blustery that day I must say 😂
Beautiful!!
Thanks for the very kind comment . Regards Steve
wonderful film!
Cheers John , much appreciated comment . Steve
Superb compilation. Well done - it is great to see locomotives doing what they do best and working hard! Thanks for posting it. Have shared it on my FaceBook page - with a credit to you of course - trust that is OK?
Thanks David , really pleased you liked the video and not a problem in sharing it at all . Regards Steve
Stunning!
Thanks Philip , very sorry for the late reply. Steve
Looks great in all seasons!
Thanks Stephen , I had a few soakings but all part of the fun .
Steve. It would be easy to say that capturing these wonderful sequences in such a beautiful and archetypal landscape along one of the most famous and iconic routes would be easy. But all your locations are so well chosen and the filming is excellent and I know how much planning goes into it all. A real joy to watch.
Thanks for the very kind words and yes it took a few years to capture so many different locations at difficult to get at places sometimes . Regards Steve
Great stuff,. Funny to see those sheep legging it away double sharpish as these magnificent monsters come thundering by. Such familiar sights when I was a lad. Good to know some still exist. Seven years work eh. Time well spent. Thank you. The two Jubilees Leander and Galatea were almost a daily sight when I lived in Gloucester. They were based at Bristol 22A Shed code in the 1950s and hauled passenger trains northbound up the Midland line through Gloucestershire northbound. Ten years on a move to London and this rail enthusiast saw the likes of 70013, 60009 and most of the rest in action until the mid-60s. Ten years further on, I worked in S.Wakes and travelled much for my job. Homeward bound to Gloucester on the A40 I took a break in a long lay by. Also in that lay by was a low loader. On that was a Jubilee headed from Barry Woodham's place to Severn Valley. Yes, one of those former Bristol based Jubs.
Thanks John , pleased it brought back memories for you 👍
Another superb compilation Steve...stunning work throughout, and a real joy to watch...Bob
Thanks Bob , slipped up with editing on 61994 with the sound but hey ho .
Thanks Peter , most of this footage was taken well before the new so called rules/ban came in hence heads here there and everywhere .
TheStephengthompson Can you recommend a good site for steam special train timings?
WWW.UKSTEAM.INFO Stephen is the one I use .
peter buckley Hey. Great to learn of your gritty determination. Hats off to you....
Exceptional from the start to the finish 👏:-)x
Thanks Lynn 👍
A treat to watch :)
Wonderful views, especially that scene in the snow. Funny, also, to see sheep running for their lives. Their ancestors never batted an eyelid..
Thanks Marcus, really pleased you liked the video . Steve
That's a heavy train to haul up Shap but a good effort BT Tangmere, with a little help from smokey Joe. Well done Steve 🤓
Great looking video enjoyed watching.
Thanks for the very kind comments as they are much appreciated. Steve
You are very welcome.
Awesome footage and great steam action! That is a really spectacular movie, you certainly put a lot of work in it. Kind regards from Poland! ;)
Cheers for the very kind comments , hard bit was finding all the shots on the hard drive. Steve
TheStephengthompson
Excellent stuff for which many thanks. The very first one would be the best for focus and the rest were it not for the too many vacant looking heads and expressions from aged looking males with their heads out of the toilet windows at end of each carriage AND that hideous diesel loco at the rear prompting the reflection “whither steamif its performance has to be guaranteed by a foul smelling diesel! Thankfully this was not the case in the rest of the superb docs!
Stunning indeed!
Thanks Jim , pleased you enjoyed it👍
This has to be the most awesome capture of steam up here in the NW, or anywhere.
Thanks for the extremely kind comment as it's much appreciated . Regards Steve
brilliant .. the photography and compilation ain't too shabby either .. :)
Thanks Tim , pleased you liked the video . Steve
Brilliant shots 13 coaches in some shots 12 in others just Awsome power just awesome long live steam steam is alive steam is king .
As, always, fab Steve. I love the shot of the ‘angriest loco’ in the world (Oliver Cromwell) in the snow. Also some top footage of Scots Guardsman demonstrating the power of these fine locos, especially in the clip with 13 bogies on the hook.
I was up in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday walking Whernside. Sadly, as you’ll be aware, no steam to be had (and precious little traffic on the line of any description). BTW, quite an LMS bias in this one - well done, that’s just the way I like it 😉 (to be fair though, No.9 is shown giving a couple of splendid performances here).
Thanks Gerard, very sorry for the very late response but I’m pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Superb footage ! It's been many years since I've been linesiding up there, and watching this brought back many
happy memories ! Did anyone notice the young blond girl on the footplate at 19.15 ?
Good for her, must have been an amazing experience !
Thanks John , pleased it brought back memories for you and the blond girl works on Leander a bit I believe .
Totally cool video! 10 stars!
Thanks for the kind comment and I’m very sorry for the late response.
fantastic!
Thanks Philip , much appreciated. Steve
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Tom , my pleasure and glad you liked the video . Steve
Looking good, yes a heavy climb especially with a box on the back
Thanks Anthony , sad to see a box on the back in some shots as most of the locos were powerful enough without one . Steve
A very enjoyable watch Steve with some wonderful action. No route to beat the S & C in my book. Sad to think we won't see 61994 again as she was a great performer
Thanks Austin , must admit I did like filming 61994 over the years on the S&C as it's a fantastic line that offers so many different shots .
Never say never, it is a long time.
Nice one. Well I'll be on that trip next Saturday. Booked Loco is 46115 Scots Guardsman. I'm hoping for a great trip.
Thanks Michael , hope you have a good day and I will be out and about somewhere .
Good Job !
Thanks for the kind comment .
Beautifully filmed, and at beautiful locations. I much prefer your stile of not being tempted to pan the locomotive. Very professional job, well done!
Thanks Wilhelm , yes I’ve never really been a fan of panning around . Sorry for the late response. Steve
Chuffing brilliant, even got a Buzzard calling in the video too. Much respect should go to the fireman because it is their efforts fuelling the fire that make the steam push the train.
Thanks for the kind comment and I’m pleased you enjoyed the show. Steve
Great one
Thanks James, much appreciated as ever 👍
Poetry... sheer poetry.
Thanks Garry , pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Ow done that many a time watching the steam locos go under the walkway bridge the steam and the smell can still remember loved it but mum didn't go home stinking of smoke :-D
Thanks John, sorry for the late response 👍
Great stuff. The only part of the UK that reminded me of Australia ,Gippsland near Melbourne
Thanks for the kind comment and I’m pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Nice compilation of super quality shots, pity some of the steam locomotives needed a diesel as backup!
Thanks Robert , I agree about the assistance as I’m not a fan to be honest.
Here in the US, diesel is often used a generator to supply electricity to the passenger cars, but not for hauling power at all. Also required by right of way owners to keep tracks clear in case of steam engine failure.
nice video keep it up
Cheers Eddie , much appreciated .
Excellent video
Those inclines would have kept the fireman very busy!
Love those Caledonian hooters on the LMS
Thanks Geoffrey, sorry for the late response.
I misread the title for 'From Hatfield to Aisgill summit'. Now THAT would have been a climb!!! ROFL.
Sorry for the very late reply and it would have been a climb indeed from Hatfield . Steve
Hellifield to Settle junction is downhill. From there to Hellwith Bridge is a steady 1 in 100 then there's a short level stretch to just south of Horton in Ribblesdale then 1 in 100 again to Dent. From Dent to Aisgill summit is fairly level (which is just as well as this stretch included the Garsdale Head water troughs)
So it is 🤔
Why hasn’t there been any northbound steam tours of recent. All I’ve seen for the last year or so out via the WCML back via the S&C. Southbound runs are more difficult for me to film.
Super lokomotywa
Thanks Kuba , much appreciated comment.
Wonderful job. Thank you indeed! Doesn't the Duchess look drab in BR green? Doesn't suit her at all.
Thanks for the very kind comments as they are much appreciated . 46233 is due to return in Crimson I understand . Steve
The last thing you need on a 1 in a 100 gradient for 40 miles is a 100 ton dead deisel loco on the back!! Long drag indeed!
Thanks Sam, very true re the diesel help but not every tour on this video was assisted so a hard climb for loco and crew for over 35 miles on a 1 in 100 twisting turning route can’t be easy. Regards Steve
Your not going to get better footage than this. Superb! This may sound a daft question but why is there a back up loco only on some services? Does it depend on what lines they have traveled before or after Settle Carlisle?
Thanks very much Rich , some tours had a diesel on to turn the whole train at stations and others due to weather conditions. Regards Steve
Funny, I remember the Duchess of Sutherland being red. Did they repaint it? If so why?
Big bus newlyfriend here from ebie
Could you tell me: Is there a regular steam train that does this route? If you filmed it over the last 7 years does that mean it's a regular feature of this line? Thanks.
There’s normally a tour over this line around once a week or more especially in the summer. 👍Regards Steve
Months ago I saw a comment from someone regarding a particular driver's{sadly, passed} ability to adjust something like acctuator, regulator?? that gave the engine a "fluttering sound". Something that he was well known for. Could someone please tell me what it was that he adjusted, and, which train it was? I thought it was the Black fives, but still searching for the vid clip. Someone help me please.? It's driving me nuts!
It will be the regulator Allison and all locos have one that basically the higher up it’s lifted the faster the locomotive moves . Not sure which loco or driver you mean though sorry.
Thank you sooo much Stephen. Persistence will pay off. I know that I downloaded it to my computer along with a multitude of video clips of steam trains,so I will conduct a thorough search, and, will sure let you know the train, and, the driver's name. Thanks again,Awrabest,Allison
Did you ever cook lamb chops on one of those fireman’s shovels?
Thanks Robert , I know they cook bacon but not sure about lamb chops 🤔
REVERSER IN FULL GEAR, IN THE FRONT CORNER!!!
PULL ON !!!!
WHAT IS GRADIENT , AND MILEAGE??
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can
Thanks for the kind comment 👍
@@TheStephengthompson This is most of what was on the tracks when I was a kid. My family on both sides were all railroad. My Paternal grandfather was a salesman for one of the big builders, he actually sold a whole set up to India, even went over and helped survey the route, rode on the freighters when the rolling stock was shipped and got them running. My mothers side was not so lucky, a second cousin lost a leg in an accident, her mother had three train car accidents over her life, the last one got her on mothers day 1974 at a crossing on a hill.
Great video with a wonderful variety of locos although my blood pressure rises when I see the idiots on the trackside at 6:02. The problems trespassers caused with Flying Scotsman were widely reported and there was a woman killed in America when she got too close to Union Pacific 844. That sort of stupidity does nothing to promote the cause of mainline steam.
Thanks David, the two chaps are actually standing on the bridge banking with the lineside wall lower down but it does look like they are trespassing .
Agin, beautiful videos of beautiful trains in beautiful settings; the English countryside is so lovely. I especially enjoyed the shot at 26:00; the light is perfect and again at 30:00 I believe it was.....the all scarlet livery. I believe the fireman sometimes throws some sand in the firebox which scours out the accumulated soot, which makes for some black smoke, at least that was the practice here in the States. also, I'm not clear on the meaning of the lights on the locomotive; do they refer to routing or destination? Thanks for posting, always a pleasure to watch.
@Berkshire 759 Yes it does and thank you very much; and as always your videos are are a pleasure to watch.
@Berkshire 759 Again, very helpful; thanks for taking the time to explain. English locos and trains are at the top of my list as favorites and thanks to the internet I can see a lot of action.
Où est-il , l'oeil du cyclone ,dans le brouillard de la vapeur , si ce n'est le cri d'un milan royal supposé , que l'on entend ??? !!! _____très belles Vidéos ! Merci ! Un bonjour de FRANCE ( Vesoul ) le 01/12/17
Thanks Martine , pleased you liked the video . Steve
Merci de votre réponse !!! Parfois on entend les oiseaux comme les alouettes grisolant puis ce cri du milan à la vue 29-19 30-12 , dans le panache sur les magnifiques verdures des arbres sapins. Joseph ! le 02/12/17
It would be nice to follow the steam locomotive. The footage would be even better. Nice video of steam locomotives steaming past the camera.
Thanks Geoffrey, I do pan round sometimes but it’s not always possible due to various obstacles etc . Regards Steve
Just like my Landrover getting up hills with a trailer load of wood on tow... Funny how other drivers behind me don't seem to find it all that interesting?
Thanks Tom , glad you enjoyed the video.
I saw the part where they filmed the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter trilogy.
Are you trying to troll here?
Trilogy?? Hmm, a bit more than that. But yes, the Ribblehead Viaduct is where that was filmed.
Well whatever you call it, Paul. that was the viaduct, that was in some of the films. You know I’m a trainspotters
well the long drag tests firemen and from what I SEEN there still learning how to fire some are throwing too much coal on and not setting their dampers right and firebox door to get the right amount of air in the firebox you only need six good shovels every two to three minutes
Thanks Anna , you seem to know what you are talking about that’s for sure 👍
Sounds like someone has been watching the LMS instructional film "Little And Often". I was having similar thoughts when I was watching this vid.
I love how to LMS engines have to work hard yet the LNER engines just go "Hill, what hill, I thought it was an ant mound?"
1 in 100 is an ant mound. You know you have a "hill" when coming down is the scary bit. Back in the day, the NSW "standard goods" steamers (2-8-0) used to run out of brakes (and sometimes throw their rods) bringing goods trains down the 20 miles of 1 in 33 between Katoomba and Valley Heights. With all the handbrakes wound on at Katoomba, the wagon tyres were quickly glowing red hot and making catherine-wheel sparks. Reportedly, it looked very pretty in the middle of the night. After Valley Heights, the grade settles down to 1 in 60. There was a brake plan that drivers tried to keep to. At a particular landmark, apply full brake and slow the train to a walking pace. Release the brake and let the train run. By the next landmark, the compressor would hopefully have charged the air back up, and you apply full brake again. The next generation of goods steamers (4-8-2), the 57 and 58 class, did not suffer from this. Then the electric 46 class locomotives just whizzed up and down the grade as if it didn't exist. The grade from a standing start out of Faulconbridge station is 1 in 31.
BoilerRoom4 o
2 different videos as the last coach is a pullman at start but not during travel
Thanks Vernon , there are lots of variations of tours taken over a few years so the same train won’t necessarily be following on . Regards Steve
This is not steep, here in New Zealand,on the main trunk ,we have 22 MILES of 1 in 70 ,which back in the steam days could test crews.
Perhaps not Dave , but still hard work for the crews from what I have been told .
Ok. There is always someone somewhere who has something bigger, better, longer, louder and so on, no matter what the topic in question might be. The question is though - do you still have steam locomotives running on that particular stretch of track today?
Why so much smoke,,this will pollute this beautiful area
Most of the smoke coming out of the chimney is excess steam from the cylinders Shabbeer .
Great video in the 1950’s we used to travel from central station Sydney Australia to the blue mountains by steam train the sound of the engine and steam coming out brought back fond memories anyone who criticises steam power is a ratbag and a useless greenie attention climate change scare mongers James watt 1736 1819 Scottish engineer and inventor developed an improved steam engine for industry god bless him
Thanks Douglas , you can't beat the sight and sound of steam hard at work . Regards Steve
Hmmmm !! So, I guess I'm a ratbag and a useless greenie attention climate change scare monger, am I, as I like the sound of a hard working English Electric diesel more than a kettle ??
Yep above average video for you tube , one thing missing , you should at the start of each clip say what the loco' is
Thanks for the kind comment and your probably right about the loco identity missing from the clips . Steve
