Hello, my great uncle was a engine driver out of oxenholme about 12 miles down the line. He used to mainly drive bank engines up and down shap helping goods trains with a push from the rear. He must have been up and down that track 1000s of times.
Without any doubt this video must rank as one of the most unique in modern day steam workings. The camera positioning was spot on, the long video shots were perfect and the sounds of two steam loco's slogging up Shap was superb. Hearing the exhaust beat of two loco's simultaneously was the highlight for me, as I love those long approaching and receding sounds. Well done too for running the video after Britannia had long passed, and all credit to the drivers and firemen, they really knew how to handle those engines to perfection. Thank you.
I've watched this video about a dozen times over the past few weeks and it must rank as one the best over Shap, and is also so unique. When the driver gives Britannia her head she just storms away with her train and the noticeable change in exhaust blast is a truly moving experience in every sense of the word. Many thanks again Phil.
Hmmmm a quote from an old Midland driver (my late Grandfather) if you see black smoke from the chimney of a steam locomotive then the Fireman wasn't doing his job properly. So I'd say the Fireman on Britannia was doing a far better job. Yes the Jubilee was probably on her limit having a rake of ten so I'll give the crew the benefit of the doubt, but in saying that my Grandfather probably wouldn't.
@@carldavies7418 all it means is the door is open and he's stoking. Doesn't mean he's not doing a good job. Stoking up before the climb and hoping for the best would not have been a good call here. Stoke up before and then probably need to keep going some of the way up.
What a fantastic video Phil of these 2 steam tours in 1 shot . History in the making. You were in just the right place. Very well captured. Liked and fav C&A
Rare footage indeed in this day of ours where mainline steam is oft regarded as something of a novelty for old guys with nostalgia. Not on your life - this is a superb video which captures all the elements of preserved steam today.. A joy to watch and appreciate the skill of today's crews. All admiration to the Crew of Britannia for maintaining a steady beat up Shap (probably against double yellows all the way) ensuring avoidance of a wheel slip or red light and the likelyhood of a standing start. Many thanks - most enjoyable
That is what I call bliss! Country scene with birds chirping, sheep and gunzels grazing the fields and the dulcet tones of two superbly maintained heritage trains climbing the rise. Thank you very much for arranging to be in the right place at the right time.
An incredible video of the steam 'procession' up the Shap incline. A truly marvellous spectacle Phil and very well done indeed on capturing these moments for us all to enjoy. Regards - Allan.
Just found this. It was before we moved up this way and I am filled with admiration (and jealousy) at this real epic. Extremely well done - the right place at the right time and for the right time! Thank you.
Absolutely staggering. The finest rail footage I have ever seen. Seeing steam trains in view at the same time taking on Shap must be unique. Superb choice of precise location. Bet the unit driver wasn't best pleased by the delay.
Thank you for the positive words they are very much appreciated. The convoy of 4 class 66's running up the rear must have been impressed with their view of events. Regards Phil.
Phil, you picked the perfect location to capture this great rare event, and to think that the majority of mainline steam was on the verge of finishing a few weeks ago ! Regards, Liam
A superb piece of video - probably the longest I've seen without a single move of the camera or lens! A great position, a clear day, no wind to drag the sound away and not a moment without interest. I like the two final elements, too - the 'upstart' DMU patiently waiting for its turn in the distance and the man savouring the retreating sounds. Well done.
Brilliant footage of the two engines climbing Shap. A rare occurrence in these days. The sound is excellent and perfect location. Thank you for sharing.
Sight and sounds of two quite different locos on what must be the most famous eighty eight miles of railway line anywhere in the world. Thank you for posting!
Just amazing Phil, allowing two trains so close especially on the climb to Shap is a very unusual occurrence, with both on shot and performing superbly with 11 on each train...Bob
That is one bloody brilliant video there, it made my day by just seeing this, fabulous how you can see 45699 climbing and you can see 70000 in the distance, liked, Tom
You can still hear Galatea as Britannia approaches! That's got to be something hardly ever seen before. 11 coaches unassisted was asking a lot of a Jubilee, but it was doing a sterling job slogging up there. So was Britannia from a standing start.
I just don't know what words to use Phil. Magical, brilliant, superb - any would fit and yet not be good enough to sum this shot up. A finely chosen location to start with and then 10 minutes of history unfolding before our eyes. Hope you can tell I enjoyed that immensely. Thanks for sharing. Chris
I think without doubt this is the best video on RUclips of this particularly epic event..... You've captured the spectacle so well with the awesome audio, getting both loco's in the same shot, and the whole feel of the drag and effort of the climb... My only wish is that you hadn't put the screen wipe in at the start of Britannia's run and cut out that 30secs to a minute or so of footage, as unedited it would have been a better record of history... but still awesome - Thanks for sharing with us.
Very good, great view and two fine locomotives. Question. In most Australian mainline steam excursion video clips, we see a water wagon behind the tender - I'm sure you can see that in some of Rod Williams' fine clips. Yet I do not recall it on British clips. Perhaps someone knows why.
An absolutely incredible event!! Were there coal/fire issues with Galatea I wonder? There have been similar issues before. Great to hear Britannia pick up speed on the last mile of Shap - nothing wrong with that loco. Anyway, a fantastic video of something that will probably never be repeated, well captured Phil. Many thanks for sharing, cheers, Alan
That is amazing footage - great forethought and planning! A really fascinating capture of a very rare event and brilliant sound too! Thanks for posting this, it's fantastic.
Galatea not to be denied despite coal issues....fine footage of two magnificent locos. Just love the overlapping of their respective beats. Britannia superb from a standing start. Thanks
I have just watched 70000 on the Torbay express. It got away after some battery problem. A great loco. I often view or see these on the Devon banks...Hemerdon etc., but this is great footage, well done!
Amazing video and a scene repeated 4 years later on 18 May 2019 with Britannia hammering up Shap followed 15 minutes later by Leander who was also putting on a good show. Many thanks David.
Thank you for this, very enjoyable to watch. (I remember Britannia-class engines on the Liverpool Street-Norwich line around 1960 when I was a small boy trainspotting at Wymondham. "Owen Glendower" is the sole name I can recall with certainty.) Now, can anyone explain to me why the exhaust of the Galatea is so dirty and that of Britannia so clean? People below have hinted at the skill of the fireman or the quality of the coal... but what are the factors involved?
It looks like the Jubilee fireman may have over banked his fire for the exhaust to be that dirty for that length of time. The Jubilee wasn't struggling, she clearly had plenty of steam and power in reserve as she is not easing her pace at all. The driver is keeping her at the pace that he senses is right to keep her moving without those 6'9'' wheels slipping. That speed will have been determined by the circumstances at the start of the climb.
Great to see two trains in same shot, amazing. But what i really enjoy in this clip is when there is no train in shot. The sound of Britannia accelerating away is great. Well done to keep filming for the sound alone.
Mmmm, very very nice. there seemed to be a service train just behind the Brit as well. Glad you left the camera rolling after the Brit passed out of shot, nice sound of the acceleration after she passed you. The Jube did not seem to have been fired too well, too much black smoke indicating incomplete combustion.
A truly superb video capturing the 'attack' but what I really think is the icing is the off camera sound for the last 90 seconds. Down 'ere in the south we have a good climb out of Weymouth but it is impossible to film like this
Phil I heard about what had happened on Shap, but this is amazing to watch and well done for picking a location with little wind. I filmed Galatea on the Cumbrian Coast area. Mike.
Brilliant video of what must be a unique sight nowadays, never mind rare! Superb location chosen to catch both trains in the same frame. Just a pity the Jubilee was struggling and caused Britannia to have to start the climb from almost a standstill. Britannia accelerating impressively at the end. Thanks for a wonderful video.
rab4472 Thanks Mike and it was a rare sight the events on Saturday and to think a month ago we thought it was never going to happen again. Regards Phil.
I am 76 yrs old and this is as Grand a sight, as watching the old California Zephyr, blowin thru the Feather River Canyon, in the U.S.A, back in the day.

On par if not better with Peter Handford's Recording "Trains in the Hills" I've watched your production over and over and never tire of listening to the evocative sounds which was once a common daily sight all those years ago ...Bloody Marvelous!!!
Superb. Temporarily indisposed at the moment so this was very much appreciated. I wonder why they didn't loop the Brit at Tebay to give that TPE class 350 a chance?

Shouldn't make much difference as the black stuff doesn't come through the exhaust nozzles. possibly the slightly softer exhaust of the double chimney may have tended toward it being dirtier as the fiercer the exhaust generally the brighter the fire will burn. Probably why the spam cans are notorious for having filthy exhausts as they have a very soft blast coupled with the vagaries of the chain driven valves.
Just watched this film again, an amazing scene, did you notice another train in the background? looks like a passenger, 25,800 people have watched this video, didn't know there were that many steam fans around, truly amazing.
Brilliant video. Don't think this will happen for a long, long time. We had the same problem with the Duchess, a TSR at Tebay. Both loco's couldn't both be suffering from bad coal could they ??
The fact that Galatea was even making headway up shap WITH LOAD 11 without a banker is credit to the crew on her footplate that day. Asking Jubilee to tackle shap with load 11 with a banker would be hard. Without one it's amazing she was still storming up it.
Magic...two completely different exhaust beats heard at the same time! Who would ever have thought that would happen? And Britannia saying "I think I can" which eventually turns into "I KNOW I can"! :-)
What a sight, Phil. You were perfectly positioned to capture the drama. I expect we will not see the likes of again. Hope Britannia gets another go at Shap, unhindered. Keith
Terrific. I think its all been said except to congratulate the two crews on their sterling, professional performances. At one time this was a procession albeit at mostly higher speeds.
Interesting that the Jubilee managed the climb with the same number of coaches as Britannia, the much more powerful of the two locomotives! Any idea of their relative timings for the climb?
The timings would have been approximately the same as the Britannia would have been having to pace herself to the Jubilee's speed so as to remain as near as possible to a constant distance behind her. If she hadn't she could have been in all sorts of trouble. Very skillful bit of driving on Britannia's driver's part.
Mark Turner Of course, that goes without saying! Particularly given that Britannia is by far and away the more powerful of the two locos and the two are pulling similar loads!
my dad started driving for the then GWR in 1942, he taught me how to fire and drive on full size and 3 1/2 and 5 inch gauge models. he retired on medical grounds after 47 years service, so it is kind of in the blood. I used to love it when he came home smelling of steam loco :-)
Galatea has been down south BUT to save money this summer she has NOT been turned at Yeovil but 'banks' from Weymouth which actually means doing very little I guess. This is such a shame. Apparently Yeovil charges too much?>??

The fact that Galatea was even making headway up shap WITH LOAD 11 without a banker is credit to the crew on her footplate that day. Asking Jubilee to tackle shap with load 11 with a banker would be hard. Without one it's amazing she was still storming up it.
Wow fantastic - great scene and great sound, thank you.
Thank you
Brilliant Phil , ideal location to catch a fine piece of history . Shame the Brit was behind and not in front . Regards Steve
TheStephengthompson Thanks Steve and it was nice to see the two tours attacking Shap in very different circumstances.
Regards Phil.
did anyone hear a class 66 horn from that 4 loco 66 convoy at 6:09 ?
Yes coming up or down?
Both climbing Shap without bankers, and running block on block. Practically unheard of even in steam days, Great video.
Roger Traviss Thanks very much for watching and glad you liked.
Keith
hemerdonbank Thanks for watching Keith and glad you liked.
Regards Phil.
Terrific. I think its all been said except to congratulate the two crews on their sterling, professional performances. At one time this was a procession albeit at mostly higher speeds.
OldFart Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Great video! (But it also shows why the LMS needed a big double-Pacific Garratt) Thanks for posting.
chygwelanmeneth Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Fantastic Phil that's all that has to be said. Thanks for sharing.
James
JSK Kenyon Thanks James and your comment is very much appreciated.
Cheers Phil.
Interesting that the Jubilee managed the climb with the same number of coaches as Britannia, the much more powerful of the two locomotives! Any idea of their relative timings for the climb?
+firdaussi Razor Thanks for watching and sorry I haven't got any info on the timings.
How come Galatea was going so slow with 11 on? I saw a film of her going up Shap in 2013 with 10 on going like the clappers.
steven dawson Thank you for watching and Galatea probably had a few things going against her on Saturday.
Thanks to 981smithy for posting this.
Is there an expert who can explain why Galatea is blowing smoke while Britannia is blowing only steam?
Galatea was burning rubbish coal
Just had to watch this epic video again! Got to be one of my fav videos on here and I have watched many! Sure I heard the horn of a modern loco?
+Rich Davey Thank you.
This is awesome with headphones. I wonder why they didn't combine the two train's. Would've sounded even better.
Fabulous video, thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you for watching.
Fantastic catch! Would love to have been there to see that, but your video is the next best thing.
***** Thanks very much and glad you enjoyed.
Galatea has been down south BUT to save money this summer she has NOT been turned at Yeovil but 'banks' from Weymouth which actually means doing very little I guess. This is such a shame. Apparently Yeovil charges too much?>??
very nice peace of footage love it nice clear video well shot thanks for posting
+nickladey Thanks for watching and glad you liked.
